of violence in oakland in a moment, but we want to turn our attention outside with the return of the heat moving in. yeah. >> as you look live from our san jose camera, temperatures are going to creep up for a lot of us starting tomorrow. that's right. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking everything we need to be on the lookout for sandhya. >> yeah, and danamma, the concern here is the kind of heat we're expecting. could make some people sick. so a heat alert to tell you about. it's a heat advisory that goes up 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow. all areas inland, valleys and mountains risk of heat, illnesses will be increasing. it's going to go into the moderate to major category away from the coastline. as you can see. and as we take a look at the day planner tomorrow morning fog starting off the day around the coast in bay 5060s. temperatures on the rise by noontime, you're already in the upper 90s by 4 p.m. inland mid 60s coast, though in the evening you're still going to be warm inland with temperatures in the 90s. i'll be back to let you know how long this heat is sticking

around. coming up ama. >> all right. thank you, sandhya. we'll check back. cal fire put out multiple spot fires today. one located in the foothills of san jose. and this one in an area east of petaluma. crews worked quickly to stop the spread of the flames. flames in the hills along old adobe road this afternoon burned about two acres. one person was hurt in the fire that also sent up a lot of smoke over east san jose. the fire spread to the grass, burning less than an acre. no word on how it started or how badly that person was hurt. and you can keep an eye on the heat and other weather where you live with the abc seven news bay area app, it gives you access to the same live doppler seven tools our weather team uses. download the app wherever you stream abc seven news, bay area. >> all right, let's move now to the east bay. tonight, oakland police are asking anyone with information to come forward in the latest spike of overnight violence. two shootings claimed the lives of three teenagers overnight, all within one hour. their deaths marked the 38th, 39th and 40th homicides of the year. abc seven news reporter joe stone is following the story

and has more on what community leaders are saying about it. so this is frederick chavez, one of the acting deputy chiefs for the oakland police department. >> addressing news that three teens were killed in shootings early monday morning. that happened at at least two locations. >> the two incidents do not appear to be connected, we believe that the last two individuals were both at 102nd international. >> this is a map of oakland showing the two spots. a victim was found near ninth and filbert in west oakland around 1:30 a.m. monday. two other victims were believed to be shot near 102nd and international around 2 a.m, before eventually dying. >> when i was coming up in the 80s, if a person had a gun, it's probably one person in six people with one gun. now it could be six people and everybody got a gun. >> chico wells is a violence interrupter in san francisco, where one of the three victims lived. wells says parents need

to talk and be involved with their kids being a father and a grandfather, you know, i spend a lot of time you know, because i want them to be the best that they can be, you know, don't say parents. >> don't say that. you don't have the time to do it because you do have the time to do it because you made the time. >> no arrests have been made in these recent shootings. and some oakland leaders are calling for additional help. >> we do need the presence of more police officers to enforce the laws and the rules that we have. >> others, like pastor mike mcbride, say the focus here should be safe, supervised spaces for kids to hang out, especially in the summer. >> unfortunately, we don't have the investments necessary from our tax base, both at the local, state and federal level to have safe places and spaces for young people to gather. so they they literally try to create their own spaces to hang out. >> pastor mike says that kids need to be aware too. >> and i would tell young people

to be wise and be smart and don't put yourself in situations where, you know, individuals will have guns. we know individuals through social media accounts are beefing and having conflicts, be preemptive. >> j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> always think it's important to look at the big picture here at abc seven and put crime in context. police in oakland and san francisco have both reported drops in violent crime this year, and today, the fbi shared new data showing that trend carries across the country. the fbi says reports of violent crime nationwide dropped 15% in the first three months of the year, compared to last year. murders dropped by more than 26. people's perception doesn't always match up with the reality. a gallup poll from late last year found more than three quarters of americans believe crime is going up. we give you the power to look at the public safety picture where you live, using our abc seven neighborhood safety tracker. the interactive tool gives you a wide range of public safety data for oakland, san francisco and san jose. you'll find it on the front page

of abc seven news.com. >> a new update in a case we followed very closely from the start, the state attorney general's office says san francisco's district attorney did not abuse her power in declining to file charges in the death of banco brown. the chronicle reports the ag's office reached its conclusion after reviewing the case materials. the shooting at a walgreens on market last year sparked protests. the security guard working there said he suspected 24 year old brown of shoplifting and shot him after a scuffle. brown was not armed, but the guard said it was in self-defense. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins says she could not prove otherwise. >> building a better bay area often means finding the keys to kick starting downtown san francisco. after a hugely successful rollout last year, the city's vacant to vibrant program is making a comeback this summer, with 11 new businesses and seven other businesses in the program have signed long term leases. and it's there we find tonight's abc seven news building a better bay

area breakthrough. abc seven news reporter tim johns explains how these small pop ups are getting a great start while filling up downtown. >> at roseland bakery business over the past year or so has been good. last year, owner matthew kosoy says the bakery was chosen to be a part of san francisco's vacant to vibrant program, an initiative that helps pop up businesses set up permanently in the city with the help of things like free rent and grant money. matthew credits the program for helping him expand his business from rosalyn's factory in pacifica to a cafe in the heart of san francisco. >> being president in san francisco has provided more exposure for my company's name and ultimately, my business, matthew tells me. >> he signed a five year lease back in january for this cafe here in san francisco's embarcadero center, one of several vacant, vibrant businesses who have done so in this area. those original vacant to vibrant businesses are set to be joined by even more. this year. the city has selected 11 additional businesses, including a florist and an art shop to

sponsor. starting this month. help that matthew says will be greatly appreciated given the ever increasing costs of running a small enterprise. >> we've seen all of our costs go up. labor costs is at an all time high, but the vacant to vibrant program is only one way. >> san francisco is attempting to help small shops. in addition to reforming the tax system, the san francisco chamber of commerce says the city is actively trying to cut red tape. the city of san francisco has really worked hard to try to streamline the permitting process for small businesses that want to open up the chamber of commerce and other groups have been helpful to create a pathway and help people navigate what what is a complex system and opening a business, helping one of san francisco's most struggling neighborhoods get back to its pre-pandemic glory, while also improving the lives of everyday people. >> it's been very helpful. i would not have been able to open up a second retail location for my business if it wasn't for vacant vibrant, the second group of vacant, vibrant businesses will open their doors on june 18th in san francisco. >> tim johns abc seven news.

>> now, all of this comes as the city rolled out a new vision for powell street today. so far, they have a plan for the three blocks stretching from market to union square. designs call for refreshed sidewalks and upgraded parklets with more space for pedestrians. there's also an idea to install a massive new light feature above powell and market, inspired by the cable cars taking off below. the city set aside $4 million last summer to redesign and start construction on this first phase. >> new at 11. the white house lawn was in celebration mode on this monday night, hosting an early juneteenth event. president biden held a concert on the lawn with singers gladys knight and patti labelle. representative barbara lee from the east bay was in attendance, along with vp kamala harris and her husband. the national holiday will be celebrated next wednesday. >> in many ways, the story of juneteenth and of our nation is a story of our ongoing fight to

thing. thank goodness a bike ride nearly ends in tragedy for this young woman in san francisco. about three months ago, she was in a coma and today , june goldsmith is back on her feet. a driver hit jenny while she was on a bike ride near the campus of uc davis back in march. >> jenny ended up with a head injury so bad she lost her memory. her teammates on the uc davis cycling team say jenny was riding in a tricky spot when the crash happened. the head injury landed jenny in a coma for five weeks, and it's been a long recovery process since. now she's finally back home in san francisco, getting support from her older sister and family. like a few weeks ago, you couldn't remember what had happened like five minutes ago. >> so really? yeah wow >> the chp says the driver

stayed on the scene and was not intoxicated. investigators think jenny failed to stop at the intersection. she can't remember any part of the accident to give her side of the story, her teammates at uc davis have raised thousands of dollars for her medical bills and it's nice to see she is making some progress. >> new developments tonight in the fight against alzheimer's. a new treatment just got an early green light from fda advisers. the newest experimental drug is called donanemab. it targets plaque build up in the brain. studies found it slowed cognitive decline for patients in the early stages of alzheimer's. the drug does have significant safety risks, including swelling and bleeding in the brain. today, an fda committee found the consequences of alzheimer's are severe enough that any benefit outweighs those dangers. >> that potentially gives them more time to stay independent, to make decisions for themselves and to live well with alzheimer's disease.

>> an estimated 7 million americans are living with alzheimer's. the fda still has to give final approval for the new drug. >> meantime, the fda is teaming up with the department of justice to crack down on the sale of illegal vapes. they're creating a task force to enforce tobacco laws, which can result in felony convictions, criminal fines as well. it comes just after the fda sent out over a thousand warning letters to distributors and manufacturers behind illegal tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. in december, the agency seized about 1.4 million units of unauthorized e-cigarette products. >> more money in more places for more fireworks. that's what san mateo county is hoping to continue again this year, with its second ever anonymous firework buyback event. this year, there's even more cash up for grabs. so as the summer heats up, abc seven news reporter lauren martinez shows us how it'll all work. >> ahead of this year's 4th of july, people can get a cash

reward for turning in illegal fireworks during the month of june, the san mateo county sheriff's office will hold three buyback events. >> our hope is to just enhance community safety, sergeant javier acosta said. >> fireworks are illegal in san mateo county, except in san bruno and pacifica. people who turn in illegal fireworks can do so anonymously, no questions asked. our bomb unit will be on site for safety purposes. >> the illegal fireworks are weighed and based on their weight, you can receive up to $200. >> the sheriff's office called last year's buyback event here at the north fair oaks neighborhood a resounding success. they collected 400 pounds of illegal fireworks and explosives, and as a result, we had a reduction in calls for service the night of the 4th of july. >> i am surprised as well that that more cities and more parts of the state aren't doing this. >> we spoke with cal fire captain jordan mota, who said he's very glad to see these buyback events. >> so far this year, there's been several incidents of illegal fireworks starting

fires, mota wants people to know there will be no repercussions for you turning in fireworks. we know that they're out there. we know that the illegal fireworks are out there, and we know people acquire them through either questionable means online or traveling over state border. sometimes they've had them for years in their house, back to a time when they were legal. >> he hopes the buyback program can help eliminate the temptation. >> i've worked at a number of the stations in the county and up on skyline boulevard. in particular, we'd respond to three four fires a year from people setting off bottle rockets, roman candles, things like that. and it's just not the time of year to be setting off fireworks. the grass is dry, the brush is dry. you will start a fire in san mateo county. >> lauren martinez abc seven news. >> here are the dates for the three buyback events they are each saturday in june, starting with this weekend, all running from 10 a.m. to two. the first is in half moon bay, followed by south san francisco and then in redwood city. >> a bridge in southern

california adorned with original snoopy drawings is now back looking as good as new. tonight, the refurbished snoopy bridge was unveiled in tarzana today. its 12 panels of peanuts characters had to be spruced up after they were vandalized earlier this year. they were reportedly donated by peanuts creator charles schulz himself. back in the 1970s. >> seeing the kids smiles and oh, it was great. it was great. >> brings a lot of joy to me and my family that it's been redone, that we're saving it. it's beautiful again. >> despite his socal donation, schulz had deep ties here in the north bay in the bay area, he built his first studio in sebastopol. he died in santa rosa, where his legacy museum still stands. and right now, a complete set of the original pen and ink bridge drawings is currently being auctioned for more than $13,000. wow online looks pretty good. >> yeah, it certainly does. snoopy looked very happy. must be enjoying the weather. >> yeah, we are here as well,

but it is changing. sandy is back with the heat. >> yeah, the temperatures are going to rise rapidly tomorrow away from the coast. anonyma i do want to show you your heat alert to 5 to 15 degrees above average heat risk will be rising. make sure to stay hydrated and find shade if you can. as we take a look at tomorrow's forecast starts out in the mid 60s inland at 8 a.m, rapidly rising to the upper 80s and eventually the upper 90 around the bay from the 50s to the 70s and eventually the 80s. there will be plenty of sun after the morning fog at the coast, mid 50s, eventually up into the 60s. so the coast is a place to beat the heat. high pressure is building in, and as it builds in for a day, we're going to see those humidity values going down tomorrow morning. pretty high humidity across the region, but look at how quickly those values drop down to 19% in san jose 23 concord 26. in santa rosa. so of course, fire danger is a concern

around this time of year, with the finer fuels getting dried out, a live view right now from our bay bridge toll plaza. it is a great view. and on our live doppler seven, you can see that fog sitting near the coast. it's across the bay as well. your temperature is in the 50s to the 70s at this hour. in places like brentwood exploratorium also showing you the fog tomorrow, temperatures spike. there's a heat advisory going up above average numbers. fog clears for sunshine and midweek we'll go with cooler afternoons. so let's talk about graduation time. napa high graduating tomorrow evening at 7:00. it's going to be perfect weather. sunshine, low 80. temperature will drop off into the 70s later on. also graduating temescal high in larkspur, going from the low 80s at 3:00 in the afternoon. dropping off into the 70s also should be beautiful. so congrats to all the graduates. you do have a bright future tomorrow afternoon and evening. temperatures in the 50s and the 60s. there will be some fog in

the morning hours tomorrow afternoon. los gatos and morgan hill, 95 degrees 90. in san jose on the peninsula. you're looking at 88, in redwood city, 64 half moon bay, downtown san francisco, 72 degrees. it's going to be a nice one in the north bay, 90 in napa, 91 in san rafael, 96 in santa rosa, heading into the east bay, 79 in oakland, 84. orinda 87 degrees in fremont head inland and it's a little bit hot, hotter than where you should be for this time of year. 97 in livermore, 98 fairfield, 96 degrees in concord. your accuweather seven day forecast heat spikes inland upper 90s there, temperatures will moderate midweek going down to the low 90s by thursday. we're talking more in the comfort zone. cooler weather, upper 50s to mid 80s. a brief uptick, but you'll notice for father's day it's back down and it's pleasant weather for any weekend plans. ama and dan
