america this morning. >> good tuesday morning everyone i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to you i'm rhiannon ally. we begin with the supreme court once again in the spotlight. secret recordings have been released of two supreme court justices and justice samuel alito is again facing controversy. >> this time over what he said about political compromise. this morning, new ethics questions at the supreme court after two justices were caught on secret recordings discussing politically sensitive topics. >> people in this country who believe in god have got to keep fighting for that, to return our country to a place of godliness. oh, i agree with you. >> i agree with you. lauren windsor, a self-described documentary filmmaker, says she recorded chief justice john roberts and justice samuel alito at a charity event last week posing as a catholic conservative. at one point, justice alito is heard telling windsor a compromise between the left and the right might be impossible. >> well, i think you're probably right. i mean, one side or the

other, one side or the other is going to win. there can be a way of working, a way of living together peacefully. but it's difficult, you know, because there are differences on fundamental things that really can't be compromised. >> in a separate recording, justice alito's wife says she was unfazed by a recent controversy over two flags flying at the couple's homes flags that were associated with rioters at the january 6th attack. chief justice roberts pushes back when windsor said the supreme court should be guiding the u.s. as a christian nation. >> yeah, i don't know that we live in a christian nation. i know a lot of jewish and muslim friends who would say, maybe not . >> abc news has not independently confirmed the authenticity of the tapes. the charity released a statement condemning the serendipitous recording of justices at the event, which is inconsistent with the entire spirit of the evening. justice alito, his wife, and justice roberts have not commented. windsor has also not responded to abc's request

for comment. >> jurors in hunter biden's federal gun trial resumed deliberations this morning. they are considering three felony charges against the presidents son. all linked to whether he lied on a form by claiming to be drug free when he was buying a gun back in 2018. biden's lawyer claims there's no proof biden was using drugs at the time, but prosecutors claim the evidence is overwhelming. >> we turn now to a new report on crime in the u.s. the headline may come as a surprise to many americans. here's abc's lionel moise this morning. >> the fbi says american streets are getting safer. the bureau releasing new data showing violent crime dropped 15% from january to march compared to the same time last year. murders dropped by 26. rape down 25, robberies falling 17. >> we still have issues with gangs moving around, going into to communities and getting in, drug dealing, human smuggling, whatever it might be. and so the

crime rate may then go up in a particular city, while the rest of the country in general is going down other crimes, including retail theft and so-called burglary, tourism in the suburbs have made headlines. >> the perceptions about crime differing city to city, state to state. >> for example, on the new york city subway, where somebody is killed, it's going to draw more attention because there are millions of people from new york ride the subway every day. and so it's going to be immediately affecting them. >> being an election year. president biden and former president trump seizing on the issue. biden saying, my administration is putting more cops on the beat, holding violent criminals accountable, and getting illegal guns off the street. but trump says biden's policies on the southern border are making us less safe. >> in venezuela, they took all of their criminals a very heavily crime ridden country. they took all of their criminals

the americans still held by hamas. this morning, news that the u.s. is considering a new strategy to try to free eight americans still held hostage in gaza. the biden administration, reportedly considering direct negotiations with hamas, talks that would not include israel. most western countries have policies against negotiating with terror groups, including the u.s. secretary of state antony blinken, traveling in the middle east, asking allied countries to pressure hamas to accept a cease fire proposal an agreement, he says, which israel has already accepted. >> and the only party that has not accepted, the only party that has not said yes is hamas. that's who everyone's waiting on. that's who palestinians in gaza are waiting on. it's who the israelis are waiting on. it's who the hostages and the hostage families are waiting on. >> new video shows israel's daring raid saturday. soldiers reaching this apartment, rescuing three hostages, dodging gunfire. the men, as gun battle

rages, are led onto a chopper to be flown out of gaza. sources say israeli special forces dressed up as palestinian refugees to stage the mission. soldiers also rescued noah armani from a nearby apartment. she became the face of the hostages after being seen in this video from the october 7th attack, being kidnaped by hamas on a motorcycle, and now she's been reunited with her father andre koslov, another hostage rescued in the raid fell to his knees when he saw his mother for the first time in eight months, and ummer, marianne's family, was in disbelief at his safe return. tragically his father died just hours earlier. >> what a big relief. that's what i want to happen for all the families of the hostages. >> despite joy over the successful hostage rescue mission, the effort actually took a serious toll on civilians

in gaza. israel airstrike during the raid actually killed 270 palestinians, according to hamas. israel says about 100 were killed. andrew. rachel. >> thank you for instructors from a college in iowa have been stabbed during a visit to china. all four work at cornell college and reportedly stabbed in a public park in northeast china while visiting their partner school. two victims were in critical condition. the state department has not released any details about a motive or suspect. >> we are learning more about a tragic accident during a simple game of badminton. it's left a new jersey family mourning the loss of their little girl. this morning, new details about a freak accident that took the life of a six year old girl. her family was vacationing at a lakeside cottage in maine. lucie morgan and her ten year old brother were playing badminton. when police say the aluminum shaft from a racket dislodged from the handle piercing lucy's skull, she succumbed to her injuries four days later. her

gas prices nationwide fell $0.10 in the last week to 340 a gallon. the biggest weekly decline of the year. >> some states are seeing bigger breaks than others. of course, the west coast still has. among the highest prices in the nation, but that is typical. but we are expecting that more and more states could see their statewide average drop below the $3 per gallon mark in the coming weeks. >> tomorrow, the government's new report on inflation is expected to show that the overall consumer prices rose last month by the smallest amount since october. americans have been changing their buying habits, new figures show. consumers are still buying things they really want as they scale back on things that dominated their lives during the pandemic. for example, they're scaling back on clothing, furniture and dining out, but they're still spending on experiences like vacations, concerts and on luxuries like jewelry. gas prices may be lower
