stretches for eight blocks along valencia street. uh- bikes take the middle of the road in between the traffic lanes. >> last spring, the city converted a center turn lane into a bike lane. they added green paint curbs and bollards, but merchants started raising objections, pointing out a lack of parking and a resulting lack of business. >> now the bike lane could change again. instead of a center option, the city could move it to the side of the road. like most bike lanes you see. >> yeah. abc seven news reporter luz pena has been following the story. joins us live with the latest luz. >> that's right, emma and dan, when the bike lanes officially opened, sfmta claimed the center bike lane approach would be safer. but after months of desperate cries and even a hunger strike by one business owner, san francisco's transit leaders are now considering a change along valencia street. that change includes moving the bike lanes back to the side of the road, but some merchants tells us the damage has already been done. it's been ten months since the valencia street center

bike lane was finished, and a year since the construction began, and now sfmta is changing its mind. >> we've heard that it's not working for people, so on tuesday we'll be presenting an alternative side running protected bike lane. >> sfmta is now proposing to remove the center bike lane and relocate bike traffic to the side of the road. it's a long time overdue, but i'm glad to see them doing that. one design would have cyclists going between moving traffic and parked cars and parklets. another would move the parklets and cars into the street, with cyclists going between them and the curb. the latter design already exists on oakland's telegraph avenue, a sustainable transportation advocate, luke bornheimer, views the design as unsafe. >> floating parklets. while in theory seem like a good idea, they actually increase conflicts. so people coming in and out of the parklets are more likely to get hit by someone riding a bike or a scooter, and people who are riding bikes and scooters in the bikeway have to think about if someone's going

to hop in or out of the parklet while they're riding. >> sfmta is planning to hear from business owners before the next pivot. it's going to be a mix, so if you, as a merchant want to choose to keep your parklet at the curb, you can do that, and we will slalom the bike lane around your parklet. >> but if you would like to move your parklet into a floating configuration, and some merchants may choose to do that because it provides more parking in front of their business, then we will work with them. >> nikki is the owner of blondies bar. she blames the center bike lane for killing multiple businesses on her street. she doesn't want the bike lane here at all. instead, she wants the city to create a bike network through neighborhoods and not commercial corridors. >> north beach clement, the marina they're all thriving and none of them have a bike lane. we have a bike lane, and the month that the construction started made valencia street die. >> in february, we interviewed the owner of los amigos restaurant, two businesses down from blondies. he was blaming

placing it on the ballot. their next meeting is june 25th. california forever aims to bring a city of as many as 400,000 people to the area between fairfield and rio vista. >> as we head into summer health care professionals are worried about an increase in fentanyl overdoses among young people. the bay area is home to a unique program to help teenagers through addiction. in fact, there's nothing else like it on the west coast. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes has more on this trailblazing program that's building a healthier and better bay area. >> myra has witnessed the danger and heartbreak of opioid addiction firsthand. >> impact. my family member life and our mine as well. >> she didn't know what to do until someone with a probation department told her about a program, one that transformed her family member's life. >> it was a great change. >> it's an inpatient fentanyl opioid same day detox treatment program designed for youth 20 years old and younger. it's run by santa clara county at valley

medical center. it started in 2021 and is so far helped 70 young people. >> we manage their withdrawal symptoms and safely start them on a medication called suboxone or buprenorphine, and this medication prevents cravings, decreases withdrawal and saves lives. >> the young patients start their recovery in the hospital and then are linked to the next phase, whether it be a rehab or residential program or an outpatient program. by calling the program number someone as young as 16 can admit themselves. >> there's a recent law that just passed in california where if you're 16 and older, you can consent for yourself for a buprenorphine or suboxone for medication, for opioid use disorder without parental consent, even though they encourage getting support from someone 18 years and older. >> the program's administrators acknowledge that it's not always a possibility whether a parent is, you know, has struggling with addiction themselves or a child doesn't want to tell their family member for fear of severe consequences. we can help you, doctor lee said. the risk for

number on our website with zach's report. look for it on abc seven news.com. >> governor newsom is touting a major drop in crime in oakland thanks to months of chp assistance, but the city's police union is pushing a strikingly different narrative after a deadly weekend. abc seven news reporter anser hassan dives into the data for a more accurate look at public safety in oakland. >> the data is in and the outlook appears good for oakland . new numbers from the city suggest. since january, there's been a 33% drop in crime. but is that the whole picture? >> we should compare our number to a lengthy amount of time, not just the difference between this year and last year. we have to bring our number down to a level where our community feel that there's a sense of safety. >> sergeant huiwen, president of the oakland police officers association, raises an important point. city and state leaders are recognizing a 33% drop in overall crime while looking at year to date numbers compared to this time last year. but that includes a chp surge that began in february. looking at a larger

set of data and comparing the past 12 months to all of 2023. overall, crime is still down, but now only by 15.8. and looking at the past 12 months versus the annual average for the past three years, overall crime was down. but now just by over 1. >> what we're seeing is that we have the lowest numbers of crime right now for the past, what, three years? >> oakland mayor shengtao may be correct, but perhaps not by as much as the latest numbers show. for example, from january to now, opd says homicides are down 21% compared to this time last year. but when looking at the past 12 months versus all of 2023, it's only down 7.5. similar for robberies, opd estimates robberies are down 5% year to date, but when measured against the past 12 months compared to 2023, it's only down 2. >> every time we roll into the beginning of summer, we will see an increase of violent crimes across the city, an increase of scishow uh- that is just the norm for us, sergeant nguyen says.

the board of supervisors approved a plan that would allow a number of city departments to solicit private donations. abc seven news reporter lena howland is in the newsroom to explain why. leaders say, lena, this is so important. >> dan that's right. officials say this was so important because they need $25 million to make it happen. and they're not going to use any taxpayer money. now fundraising can begin, but some people feel like the zoo is just not ready to take care of these animals. another big step forward in mayor london breeds plan to bring pandas to the san

francisco zoo. as early as next year, less than two months after signing an agreement with chinese wildlife officials. the city just cleared the way to allow fundraising to begin. >> we're not using tax dollars this will all be funded privately. >> supervisor joel engardio, co-sponsor the resolution that will allow for city departments to solicit donations from private entities, even if they do business with the city, something that usually raises ethical concerns. but engardio says it's a critical next step in the process. >> what it means is that we can start the process to do the private fundraising necessary to build the enclosure, do the improvements, fix things at the zoo to make it a appropriate place for pandas. >> but not everyone is on board. a spokesperson for in defense of animals, an animal rights group, said the zoo has been mismanaged for years and won't be able to take care of the pandas. >> really, this place is not safe for animals. it's not safe for zookeepers, it's not safe for the public. it's a financial

sinkhole before tuesday's board of supervisors meeting where someone, even dressed up in a panda costume, she spent her morning hand delivering a petition of 7000 signatures signed by people opposing the plan. this panda exhibit, if it will be built, will be built on a base of corruption. >> san francisco mayor london breed, responding to those claims and also we are responsible for completing a behested payment form. >> and before we accept any of those resources, the city attorney's office will, of course, review any of the requests to ensure that we are in compliance. >> she hopes this will help strengthen tourist ties with china without having to use taxpayer dollars. >> people want to come to san francisco, and they want an opportunity to have flights that are also affordable with a limited number of flights that exist, it makes it a bit more challenging. so we definitely know that this plays into that role. >> the city's goal is to raise at least $25 million for a new

the bay area. blue skies over the golden gate bridge right now . you remember there was some fog earlier today. 90 in santa rosa. it is 84 in petaluma. a nice breeze going through there. upper 90s though. fairfield, concord. right now in livermore it is 94. you don't have much of a breeze. from our east bay hills. camera. we are looking towards mount diablo. there where one of the areas that was baking, san francisco 7180, in oakland it is in the upper 80s in san jose and 92 degrees right now in redwood city. let's check out your evening forecast. if you are stepping out. inland areas still in the 90s p.m, your temperature finally comes down into the 80s, and by 11 p.m. into the 70s. so some relief later on today around the bay looking at the sun. mid 70s, around 7 p.m. nice evening for a walk and then the temperatures come down into the low and mid 60s and near the coast. this is where you're already feeling it 60 degrees coming down into the 50s. high pressure brought the heat today. this ridge of high

pressure is just going to bring us the heat for one day tomorrow. those temperatures really back off. and part of the reason is the sea breeze is going to strengthen. right now it is gusting to 28 at sfo onshore winds. those winds will continue to increase going into tomorrow. and that will drive those temperatures down from our san jose camera. it is a sunny view tomorrow. relief from the heat arrives friday. temperatures rebound slightly and father's day weekend is looking pleasant with sunny and mild to warm weather. so first thing tomorrow morning, temperatures will come down enough to where you get some relief. we're looking at 50s and 60s. there will be some areas of fog near the coast and around parts of the bay shoreline. as we head into the afternoon. it's sunny side up in the south bay 83 in san jose, 65 degrees in santa cruz. so quite the change. 80 in milpitas, on the peninsula, you're looking at 78 in redwood city, 58 in half moon bay. there will be still some fog lingering into the afternoon. daly city, 60 degrees

seems like a steal in san jose, especially since the average single family home sells for over a million. >> i would be surprised if a house like that's available in san jose for a livable home, sure, but this is the house we're referring to. >> and there's one major caveat it's condemned. no one is allowed to live in it. the realtor listing the home says the county found a number of code violations and has since placed this sign on the front door. the property is definitely in need of some tender love and care. just looking around the yard, it looks as though there's still some trash sprinkled all throughout. the dirt is messed up, there's no grass and if you look, the doors in the shed are open and somebody left a few spare tires. >> that makes sense why it's so low for san jose. >> but this property has a pending offer. someone is ready to buy it. the realtor was not available for an interview, but did tell us in a statement due to its prime location in zoning, this property not only attracted attention from diyers, builders, and investors, but also from those seeking mixed use properties, all eager to capitalize on the opportunity.

a jury on three felony gun charges. it's the first time the son of a sitting president has faced a criminal trial. >> hunter biden was convicted of lying when he bought a gun. abc news reporter reena roy is outside the courthouse in wilmington, delaware, with the story. >> the president's son walking out of court in wilmington, delaware, hand in hand with the first lady as well as his wife just moments after being convicted. jurors finding hunter biden guilty on all three felony gun charges against him. >> no one in this country is above the law. everyone must be accountable for their actions. >> prosecutors ultimately convincing jurors as they laid out their case, arguing hunter knowingly lied on this federal form while buying a revolver in october of 2018. the form asking whether he was an unlawful user

of or addicted to drugs. this case was about the illegal choices defendant made while in the throes of addiction. >> his choice to lie on a government form when he bought a gun, and the choice to then possess that gun. >> hunter biden, appearing in expressionless when the verdict was read shortly after releasing a statement saying in part i am more grateful today for the love and support i experience this last week from melissa, my family, my friends and my community than i am disappointed by the outcome. the jury hearing from more than a dozen witnesses over the course of a week, including his ex-wife, ex-girlfriends, and the owner of the gun shop. the jury, made up of six men and six women, spending just three hours over two days to come to their decision. one man, who asked to not be named, saying politics never came into play in the jury room. >> my mind just wasn't focused on that, that his father was the president of the united states. that didn't didn't affect me or sway me one bit. >> the judge says a sentencing

date will be scheduled in the next 120 days. he could face up to 25 years in prison, but legal experts say time behind bars is unlikely, given he's a first time and nonviolent offender. his father, president biden releasing a statement saying in part, i will accept the outcome of this case and continue to respect the judicial process as hunter considers an appeal, the president also says he will not commute or pardon his son's sentence. he changed his schedule and will be here in wilmington tonight. reena roy, abc news, wilmington, delaware. >> hunter biden has another case coming up. he faces tax related felony charges in los angeles, accused of not paying $1.4 million in taxes over five years. that trial is scheduled to begin september fifth. >> a new report on crime in the united states might come as a bit of a surprise to some people, the fbi says violent crime dropped by 15% from january to march of this year, compared to the same time last year. murders were down by 26, rape fell by 25% and robberies

dropped 17. >> we still have issues with gangs moving around, going into to communities and getting in, drug dealing, human smuggling, whatever it might be. and so the crime rate may then go up in a particular city while the rest of the country in general is going down. >> the statistic are based off data voluntarily submitted by 72% of law enforcement agencies. once it reaches 80, the fbi will provide more numbers if convicted. >> theranos founder elizabeth holmes is fighting for a new trial in her fraud case. her lawyer was in court in san francisco for an appeals hearing today. holmes was not in court for the hearing. she was convicted in 2022 on four felony counts of defrauding investors in theranos. her now defunct blood testing startup. she's currently serving 11 years in prison. her attorney claims the trial judge improperly allowed a former theranos scientist to testify about how poorly the

company's blood testing technology performed. dozens of people were arrested after clashes broke out between police and pro-palestinian protesters at ucla on monday. >> ucla commencement ceremonies are set to kick off on thursday and run through the weekend. reporter josh haskell from our sister station in los angeles, got perspective on the situation from students. >> the israel-hamas war continues to disrupt ucla's campus, even with increased security and graduation just days away monday afternoon, a third encampment took over a section of campus, resulting in outside law enforcement, including the lapd and chp, being called in to help ucpd clear the tents. i just want to die. officers and pro-palestine protesters faced off. 25 people were detained. >> i'm fed up with it. i think other people on campus are fed up with it. and i understand these people are fighting for what they believe in, but at this point, it's just been getting repetitive and kind of just want it to end. >> in a statement, the ucla

police department said in part as a result of the unauthorized and unlawful encampments at the three locations, the group damaged the shapiro fountain, spray painted brick walkways, tampered with fire safety equipment, damaged patio furniture, stripped wire from electrical fixtures and vandalized vehicles. but on tuesday, it was back to normal on ucla's campus, with students finishing finals and others preparing for graduation. >> i think it's a very exciting, bittersweet time, especially for us, class of 2020, not having a high school graduation. we're really excited for this upcoming weekend and to celebrate all our hard work over the past four years and the impact we've made in this community at ucla. >> i don't want to tell them what is right or wrong. i know that they probably have a huge responsibility as a public institution to handle this open campus. it's open to anyone. it's a public university. so i think that they're doing what they think is best, and it's a little bit of trial and error. >> the different graduations are ticketed events. so the university hopes they go on without disruptions, including

hand grenades at a construction site. sky seven was overhead as the bomb squad dealt with the find around noon today. this is on the south side of yerba buena island, near the coast guard station. nothing exploded. >> well, there's a new kind of crime in southern california. avocado theft. and there is a way to fight it. here's reporter sid garcia from our sister station in los angeles with the story. >> avocados are a valuable commodity, and thieves know it. sunday afternoon, three men and a woman from norwalk were arrested by ventura county sheriff's deputies for allegedly stealing hundreds of pounds of avocados from a fillmore farm, according to the sheriff's department. someone reported seeing the four suspects stealing the fruit. this is a good year. dena eastman co-owns the eazy-e farm in fillmore. she says avocado crops can be good. one year, not so good the next. this year's crop is very good.
