>> i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. police roped off a neighborhood in san mateo, only to realize the person hit in the shooting was another three and a half miles away. >> now, they turned up in san carlos along el camino real. abc seven news reporter tim johns is back at the first crime scene in san mateo to sort it all out. >> tim, dan, umma, that shelter in place order has been lifted at this hour. and as you can see behind me, police have largely wrapped up their scene here outside the largo apartment complex. officers, however, telling us that this is still an active investigation and they're trying to piece together exactly what happened here today. san mateo police tell me they first got reports of a shooting near the apartment complex around 445 this afternoon. after that shooting took place, the suspect fled into the complex. shortly after that, police say they got another call about a shooting victim in san carlos. officers were also sent down there, where they determined that that victim was the same person who was shot outside the apartment complex. police aren't yet saying how that person made it down to san carlos, but they said the victim

was transported to a nearby trauma center. eventually, san mateo pd were able to locate the suspect inside one of the apartments and got the person to surrender. they have been taken into custody. as you can imagine, neighbors are all really shaken. earlier, i spoke to one father and his son. the little boy, only eight years old, told me he was playing outside when everything unfolded. >> it's pretty shocking to hear. first i heard police sirens out of my backyard window and then i heard gunshots. >> three of them. i started turning off lights and closing curtains. that's smart. and i liked locked myself in with my mom. >> father of that child told me he was incredibly proud of his son for responding the way he did, but he also said he was in disbelief when his wife called him this afternoon and told him to hurry home from work early. >> it's pretty shocking to hear it's usually a quiet neighborhood, we just kind of do, you know, we just kind of live day to day, and this type of activity is really shocking. >> now, as for a motive, as well as the relationship between the victim and the suspect, police

tell me they are still trying to figure that out as well. they say they plan on releasing more information come the morning. i'm in san mateo. tim johns, abc seven news, and we were keeping residents in the neighborhood updated on the situation as it was unfolding through the abc seven news bay area app. >> we send you instant updates and breaking news customized to where you live. just be sure to turn on the app's notification buttons. >> building a better bay area has often meant looking to build a better downtown san francisco, and tonight we're seeing those new signs of life. seven tenants are moving into the san francisco center, or what used to be called the westfield mall. it's been a troubled few years there since the pandemic, but as abc seven news reporter ryan curry explains, these new tenants are more than just shops. as shoppers walk through san francisco center, something is catching their eye. >> they need more businesses to come back. the smallest looking kind of empty. i know we came in on a weekday, but like still, the businesses. where are they? >> for the last few years, major tenants have packed up and left,

but things are now looking up. seven new businesses have signed leases and are ready to move in. >> i think the revival of like, public spaces, is going to be really big for building community and just allowing, neutral place to meet, to socialize. >> one of those new tenants is the yerba buena community benefit district executive director scott rowett says this space is exactly what he wanted. >> it's right in the heart of our neighborhood. and so where could we put our space? that is right in the core? where could we put our ambassadors and our cleaners and our public safety people? that really is in the heart. >> seven new tenants scattered all throughout this building. but it's not just a mall, it's also an office space. and rohit's is moving his team into this space. >> we know now is the time, and now is the time for everybody to get on board, reinvest, reinvigorate and refocus these neighborhoods. and so we want to lead the charge to do that, they will bring around 30 new employees who will begin working

in the space in the coming weeks. >> other new tenants include a retailer selling sustainable products and a japanese consumer goods store. >> i think it's critical for a community to have a space like this critical for a few reasons. >> more shoppers, but also new jobs. >> for some people that are moving to san francisco need more jobs. and these businesses that are opening up can hire us. honestly, because i live in hayward, right now, it's kind of hard to find a job out there. >> they hope this mall becomes one of the vibrant centers of downtown in san francisco. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> happening tomorrow, the first day of business for entrepreneurs. opening up shop as part of san francisco's vacant to vibrant plan. tomorrow, eight new storefronts will open in the east cut, financial district and yerba buena neighborhoods. each business owner gets a rent free storefront space for three months, with the potential to expand their leases. >> the federal government is upping its effort to combat the san francisco drug crisis. agents are now doing nightly operations in the tenderloin

neighborhood that have already resulted in drug seizures and numerous complaints against dealers. this is all part of a coordinated effort on the local, state and federal level to crack down on fentanyl trafficking. >> all right, let's get you outside for a moment. give you a head start on the weather for tomorrow. our exploratorium camera shows a calm night this evening with some changes in store this weekend. let's go to abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel, walking you through our 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandy. yeah. >> dan, let's take a look at a live picture right now from our golden gate bridge camera. you can certainly see it's a little bit fuzzy as we do have some fog. as you look at live doppler seven and it has pushed across the airport sfo in across 92 san mateo bridge towards the east bay shoreline. so first thing tomorrow morning watch out for foggy areas. it is going to be a cool start. so jacket weather at 7 a.m, noontime, sunny skies and it is going to be a warmer afternoon. low 60s to low 90s, breezy and cooler in the evening over the weekend. the winds are coming up and so is the fire.

weather concerns for parts of the bay area. i'll be back with a look at that coming up. ama all right, sandhya, thank you so much. >> time for tonight's abc seven news at dancer at 11. it's our way. we get you ahead. and on top of the big storylines in the days to come. and tonight, a couple of college commencements. that will be something to watch. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez shows us what we might expect at stanford and uc santa cruz. >> students are graduating this weekend, and some are closing out quite a contentious quarter. >> what do you have to say? what do you have to say? yes respond, please. >> for weeks and months, we saw universities divided as pro-palestinian encampments went up. >> they have simply felt that they cannot observe any longer, is what they told me. and they have felt that their, that the school is not acting in good faith towards students who have been acting in what they consider to be good faith. river to the sea. >> just last week, over a dozen stanford students and alumni were arrested for barricading themselves inside the university's president's office.

parts of campus were vandalized. >> it doesn't really help the people who need help. so it just it's really upsetting and shocking. >> in may, uc santa cruz students set up their encampment. >> the reason these uc regents have a job is because of us. yet they do not run a respect our demands. >> a few weeks later, 80 pro-palestinian demonstrators were arrested at uc santa cruz. at the end of may, graduate workers and teaching assistants went on strike, leaving some undergraduate students unsure what the rest of their school year would look like. >> it's been day by day so far. you'll wake up and check your email if your class is online or in person. >> a judge put a halt to the strike just last week. on wednesday, some ucsc executives announced they will not be attending commencement ceremonies that start friday. it said in part, several campus events over the past weeks that we were attending or expected to attend were targeted for disruption. the celebrations of commencement should not be

overshadowed or upstaged by those who want to make a statement to campus leadership, who are present. we do not want our presence at commencement to distract from families and friends, recognizing and celebrating your accomplishment. we reached out to stanford regarding their commencement ceremonies, but have not heard back in the south bay. lauren martinez abc seven news and we've been following this story from the state capitol for weeks, tracking the path of a bill aimed at protecting transgender students privacy. >> today, the state senate approved the proposal. the bill would ban school districts from passing or enforcing policies requiring school staff to disclose a student's gender identity or sexual orientation to anyone else without the child's permission, with some exceptions. supporters say the goal is to protect students whose safety could be threatened if they live in unwelcoming households. the bill now heads to the assembly. >> let's go out, live to the

and we have closely followed the work of roots of peace, san rafael resident and co-founder and founder. excuse me, heidi was just nominated for the nobel peace prize. earlier this month. she'll find out in october. roots of peace plants, trees on reclaimed mine fields while creating jobs and food sources. you can find all our reporting on her group and their mission to aid war torn countries on our website, abc seven news.com. >> the supreme court today preserved full access to the abortion pill mifepristone. the justices ruled that opponents of abortion lacked the legal right to sue over the fda's approval of that medication. the unanimous ruling means mifepristone can continue to be mailed to patients without an in-person doctor's visit. supporters of abortion rights say. while this case is over, the issue is far from being definitively resolved. >> this decision was based not on the merits, but on a lack of standing. we are not yet out of the woods. >> obviously we were disappointed. so the court ruled

against the alliance for hippocratic medicine. but we weren't super surprised. that was what we expected. and we're going to be back. >> today's decision was the first major supreme court case on reproductive rights since the court overturned roe v wade in 2022. >> we continue to follow the story of that controversial center bike lane on valencia street in san francisco. during a digital roundtable, san francisco's transit agency said it's ready to propose the removal of the bike lane. merchants blame it for a decline in business because it eliminated 70 parking spaces. abc seven spoke with the business owner, who has run a coffee shop on valencia for 33 years. >> financially, definitely. we're hurting and we had the place up for sale about three months ago. >> best option for both safety and to support the local merchants is likely side running design. >> one design would have cyclists ride around restaurant parklets closer to traffic. another would put the bike lane between the curb and the parklets. sfmta will present its

an important story to tell. >> reggie's full visit and extra movie moments up now on our website, abc seven news.com disney is the parent company of both pixar and abc seven. >> check it out. reggie did a great job there. pixar okay, let's get a check on the weather and where the heat will be in the next few days. yes. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is here. sandhya. yeah. >> we don't have to worry about anything extreme around here. all right, dan, let's take a look at la nina watch that was issued by the climate prediction center today. uh. basically, la nina is cooler than average sea surface temperatures near th equator in the pacific. and we are transitioning to a la nina right now. we're in enso ntral conditions. there's a 65% chance that la nina expected to develop between july and september of this year, 85% chance it continues between november and january. stay tuned, because as far as where we are going to go in terms of winter, we'll have to wait and see. all right, let me show you some live pictures.

we do know where we're going with this. a lot of gray skies from our tam cam exploratory camera. there's some from our other vantage points as well. and today was a cooler than average day for many parts of the bay area as a marine layer. really ramped up. now high pressure is going to come in tomorrow, warm us up then this trough is going to come in behind it for the weekend, drop the temperatures again and kick up the winds right now on live doppler seven, you can see gray skies near the coastline, visibility down to half a five miles. excuse me. and half moon bay and petaluma. so something you'll need to watch out for at commute time. temperatures are running lower in most areas, down by six degrees in livermore, four degrees cooler in novato. look at these numbers . i think it's going to be good sleeping weather for most of us, 50s and 60s winds are gusting. that's part of the reason why it's been so nice and refreshing and cool tonight. gusts to 28 at concord, 24 out towards the delta and mount tam is showing you the marine layer overnight tonight. breezy areas of fog tomorrow sunny and warmer. father's day through monday. it

is going to get windy and there are fire concerns for solano and lake counties in particular. tomorrow morning, upper 50s inland. the sun will be out by 8:00 noontime. you're in the 80s by 5:00 pm in the 90s, as we look around the bay, mid 50s with some patches of fog at 8:00 and then sunshine, it will warm up into the upper 70s eventually, and there will be fog along the coast from the low 50s to the low 60s. later on in the day. morning temperatures, 40s 50s. there will be areas of fog near the coast and the bay shoreline that we have tonight. tomorrow afternoon, a bump up in those temperatures, upper 80s to low 90s inland, 60s coast side. here is where that fire weather watch comes in. it's 11 p.m. saturday night. lake county, parts of solano county until 5 p.m. monday. gusts out of the north 30 to 40 miles an hour. humidity dropping 10 to 20. those finer fuels are getting dried out, and when the winds pick up like this, just further drying is expected. sunday 40 to 46 miles an hour along the coastline. you will notice the

windy conditions continuing into monday, raising the fire concerns. accuweather 70 forecast a brief rebound tomorrow and then cooler for your father's day weekend. winds will come up. fire danger also a concern. sunday into monday and then warmth by midweek for juneteenth and the start of summer on thursday, ama
