happened at in fremont at the cvs on fremont boulevard and mori avenue. it's a very busy shopping center. >> abc seven news reporter zach fuentes is there now with new details and reaction from neighbors zach. >> yeah. fremont police said they first got calls about the shooting at 11 last night. many community members finding out about it this afternoon. we want to take you to some scanner traffic that we have of police responding to the scene last night. here saying there's a male with a gun inside. >> we got one male in here who's bleeding from the neck. i have the gun secured. we need a medical code. three. the injury is going to be a knife wound to the neck. it's an arterial bleed. we uh- trauma coverage. security guard. he's unresponsive. yeah, it looks like no pulse. not a breathing at this time. yeah. >> the fremont police were not available for an interview today, but say that the callers reported that a security guard and another person were involved in a verbal altercation that quickly turned violent. they say

it culminated with the security guard being shot. the other individual had multiple stab wounds. officers did try to provide life saving efforts to the security guard, but that security guard was pronounced dead. the other individual was taken to a local trauma center. now, there are still aren't too many details about what ledp to the shooting, but people who work in the shopping center that's called the hub say safety and security have been a concern . >> actually work here at the hub at michael's. so we're security has been a really big issue for the hub. we have people stealing all the time. but as employees, we know we're not allowed to do anything about it physically. so i know their job is like super important, safety, keeping us safe, keeping themselves safe. >> that woman and at least one other person brought flowers here to the scene, she said. even though we don't know the identity of the guard yet, she comes here frequently and is sure she'll recognize who it is once that identity is released. now, the alameda county coroner not releasing that identity yet, but fremont pd saying this is still an active investigation.

now, a lot of people are coming up to this pharmacy to find out that it is temporarily closed. they're just finding out the news. cvs a spokesperson did say that they are cooperating with the investigation, but didn't provide us any other details. they say they're directing people to other nearby cvs locations. we're going to continue to bring you updates as soon as we get them. right now live in fremont. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> all right, zach, thanks very much. a prescribed burn near lake sonoma got out of hand this afternoon. it broke its containment lines. and the breakaway fire quickly grew to 20 acres. it was fairly breezy. time lapse video from the area shows smoke rising from that area west of geyserville. the fire is in a grassy woodland area controlled by the army corps of engineers. no structures are threatened and looking live out at a nice day across the bay area, but again, windy weather could cause some problems for the weekend. >> yeah, this father's day weekend. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with a look at the fire danger on the way for us. sandhya >> yeah, kristen and dan, we

definitely have winds that will be ramping up this weekend. humidity levels dropping and that is prompting a red flag warning for parts of the bay area, specifically lake county and parts of solano county. it starts at 11 p.m. tomorrow night, runs until 8 p.m. sunday. the concern is that northerly wind, which is very drying, gusting to 2535 miles an hour, humidity down 10 to 20. and of course, with the finer fuels drying out, it's going to mean any fires that break out will rapidly spread. i do want to show you the winds tomorrow night. it's just breezy along the coastline, but watch what happens as we head into sunday. those winds pick up at the coast and eventually over our inland areas in the afternoon, close to 50 miles an hour along the point reyes area. uh- 40 half moon bay. sunday night you will notice the winds remain gusty late sunday night, and the humidity values start to come down. not so much saturday night, but i wanted to give you a perspective here. watch what happens to the 44% humidity in napa. it's down to 16% by sunday morning and that humidity value

will remain low well into the afternoon. 14% in napa, 18% in concord. so elevated fire concerns for the upcoming weekend. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast coming right up. kristen >> sandhya. thank you. building a better bay area means lifting up struggling neighborhoods. today we're seeing encouraging signs for san francisco's downtown recovery. abc7 news reporter luz pena shows us the new strategies across california and one local solution paying off luz. >> that's right. well, nationwide, there have been a record 18 million small businesses seeking to open over the past three years. and san francisco is tapping into this trend to help downtown recover. last september, the city started the vacant to vibrant program and received over 1000 applications. now they're entering phase two. it may save for lease, but this retail shop in the heart of downtown san francisco is taken. the boxes on the floor and glass peeking

through are signs that the nonprofit public glass is setting up shop to be in downtown san francisco is really about visibility for us. their main location is in san francisco's bayview neighborhood, but now they're expanding as part of the city's vacant, vibrant program. it would be impossible without it. >> right. so, like many organizations and institutions, we contend with the rents in san francisco. >> last year, san francisco launched this program to help bring back life to downtown with business pop ups. phase one started with 17 pop ups. phase two starts next week with 11 businesses in eight different properties. one of those locations is salesforce park. >> well, welcome to aurora centro uh, the spin off of alimentari aurora, a shop that i opened on potrero hill three years and a half ago. >> businesses don't have to pay rent for the first three months and have an option to extend their stay. >> they get free rent from the property owners. we offer them additional financial resources,

grant money that they can use for tenant improvements, and to help with their move in san francisco's strategy is one of many used across the state to help other downtowns recover. >> friday assembly member matt haney met with labor representatives to address downtown challenges across california to make sure that we fill back up these office buildings that we convert some of them to housing, that we fill up our vacant retail, that we support our small businesses and restaurants. >> but in all of that, let's make sure that we do it in a way that uplifts the people who do that work to uplift this community. >> san francisco is hoping to do more. we are continuing to invest in this program and we are hoping to build on it in the next budget, with more pop ups, in more spaces downtown to and according to san francisco data, at least seven businesses have extended their leases from phase one of the program. these are signs that san francisco's strategy is working, and the mayor's next budget is planning

on $4.5 million to continue supporting businesses in downtown and citywide. in the newsroom. luz pena, abc seven news. very good. >> luce. thank you. we'll move now to a story we've been following for years. the long delayed bart extension into silicon valley is finally at hand with a ceremonial groundbreaking today. the extension will bring six more miles of track, mtly undergroundnd four stations from north san jose and santa clara. officials say the project will transform the south bay commute. >> bart will save riders and an average of 30 minutes on a typical 50 mile commute, compared to driving, making daily travel more efficient and less stressful. >> the extension is a partnership between bart and the valley transportation authority. vta will own the facilities, while bart will operate and maintain them. the project will not be cheap, as you would expect. it's now estimated at almost $13 billion. completion is scheduled for 2037.

>> a man wanted for armed robbery had three kids in the car when he tried to get away from cops by ramming into the cruiser, according to oakland police. police surrounded the car this morning at foster avenue and bernard drive. sky seven was there right after police arrested the driver of that black suv you see there. the children and the woman who were passengers are all okay. police believe the driver stole $400 from a san leandro smoke shop on tuesday. >> now to the latest trial for the man accused in the 2022 attack on paul pelosi, husband of speaker emerita nancy pelosi. today, david depapes defense team rested their case with no testimony from the defendant. the judge told the jury he wasn't ready to give them instructions just yet and sent them home for the weekend. jurors are expected to receive their instructions from the judge on monday, followed by closing arguments. >> this is a live picture from our camera at san francisco bay oakland international airport, where a flight that landed here

last month is under investigation. again, boeing and federal agencies are trying to determine why a southwest airlines 737 max eight jet experienced a rare endangered event called a dutch roll during a flight from phoenix to oakland. that's when the plane moves back and forth. the nose of the aircraft makes a figure eight. the crew was able to land despite substantial damage to the tail section, and no one on board was hurt. first lady jill biden returned to the bay area today as part of a three day campaign fundraising swing. she spoke at a political finance event. call it a fundraiser in los gatos this afternoon. the first lady was last here a little more than a month ago for an event in marin county. the president is heading to hollywood, meantime, tomorrow for a star studded fundraiser. george clooney, julia roberts and former president obama will all make appearances. >> the group that runs the oakland coliseum is crunching the numbers as it prepares to say goodbye to the a's and hello

to some new tenants at the stadium. the coliseum authority held a special meeting today to discuss the budget. they continue to negotiate with the oakland roots and soul soccer clubs, which are set to play their home matches at the coliseum next year. the deal includes several blackout dates during the soccer season, which the authority is working to fill with concerts and other events. >> we've been reached out to by some football teams and others, and so when we talk about being able to serve, you know, sodas and hot dogs and whatever in the building, it wouldn't end up only being for roofs and sold it, that there are some other events we are also working on as well. today's meeting comes just days after the city's sale of its 50% stake in the coliseum complex was approved. >> uh- san jose, micro-influencer, is turning a popular san jose park into the site of a latin house music festival this weekend. san jose foos sold over 5000 tickets for the saturday festival at discovery meadow park, with dj

impossibly unaffordable. in a new analysis, the demographic international housing affordability report compares average income to average home price san jose was the least affordable major u.s. city last year, followed by los angeles. san francisco also made the top ten on the peninsula. >> dozens of county workers are set to have their wages increased to $30 an hour because of the high cost of living a task force calculated that a two

income household with one child would need to make at least that much to get by. the san mateo county board of supervisors unanimously approved this resolution this week in sausalito. some very positive news for the pelicans that have landed in animal rescues by the hundreds. we've been reporting this to you of the sick and starving birds are finally turning a corner, which is great to see. today we saw the largest numbers of healthy birds returning to the bay. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard looks at how a bird rescue organization is working to build a better bay area when it comes to the environment. what's her name? volunteers from international bird rescue are getting ready for a full circle moment, releasing healthy brown pelicans back into the wild in sausalito. >> it's amazing. it's amazing. this is my first bird release. >> this is the most pelicans the nonprofit has released yet. 27 a month ago, these birds were in bad shape. they wound up at the center's fairfield hospital starving and barely alive.

>> well, we fattened them up. we've been they've been voracious eaters, going through a lot of fish. >> the moment of truth arrives and the pelicans take flight, landing yards away near fort baker. >> we're looking for them to suddenly realize they're free again. they've been in care for a while. sometimes takes a minute. >> minutes later, the pelicans start doing what healthy pelicans do. >> this is exactly what we want. we want them to be preening. some of them are getting water on their their feathers. they're going to be adjusting making sure they feel like they got this humanness off of them. >> back at the center, about 120 pelicans are still in rehab waiting for their chance to fly again. directors say fewer birds are being admitted here. since mid-april, almost 400 starving and injured pelicans have come into care at the bird center's two locations in northern and southern california. why it's happening remains a mystery, but many theories are pointing to climate change. >> we've got issues of warming water, fish not being available where they normally were. there's a number of theories being bounced around, but it

really is about the pelicans being able to access the food, bergeron says. >> there's encouraging signs the starvation event is waning. >> there are folks who study the pelicans and their numbers, and they seem to be feeding healthily again, he says. >> several pelicans tagged and released last month were recently spotted in oregon in sausalito. cornell, bernard, abc seven news. >> we are really glad to report that so many pelicans have had a hard time out on the water, you know, it's getting a little windy right before your big day and all the other dads out there, right? >> that's true. and we of course are concerned the heat's not so bad. but sandy, the wind adds to some fire risk. >> yeah, absolutely. and dan and christine, it's a combination of the wind and the lowering humidity that is going to be concerning this weekend. let me show you those temperatures right now compared to 24 hours ago, running higher by ten degrees in napa concord, 11 degrees warmer in livermore up five san francisco, oakland and san jose. you're seven degrees warmer. still have an onshore wind gusting to 30 at sfo.

sustained at 36, which is keeping you from really getting to warm today. but as we take a look at our live doppler seven, the concern here with the wind is going to be this pretty deep trough for this time of year as it continues to deepen over the weekend, it is going to kick up the winds and that's what we are worried about. on live doppler seven, you can see skies are clear, but there are some high clouds that will be coming through later on today. it is a shaky view from our sutro tower camera here in the city. a beautiful 162 degrees right now. oakland 68, san jose. you're at 81 and it is 57 degrees in half moon bay from our oakland airport. camera. okay. you are looking at a mainly sunny skies. 82 in santa rosa, 75 in napa, you're in the mid and upper 80s from fairfield to concord and livermore. if you are flying out of okay and you're not staying here in the bay area, here's what you can expect. 75 degrees tomorrow in oakland. honolulu just bright sunny skies 84. and you will notice isolated shower

chance in lihue 20% 80 degrees tomorrow afternoon. nice enough to hit the beach here locally. look at this. santa cruz is just packed today. you know school's out. father's day weekend. sunny and mild to warm saturday night into sunday. those winds will be ramping up. elevated fire danger coming in with the red flag warning going up for parts of the bay area as we go. hour by hour tonight. if you have friday night plans, it's still going to be very pleasant at five 1570s and 80s inland 50s coast side, you notice those high clouds beginning to come in at 710 into 9:00. some more high clouds, but really they're harmless. 60s and 70s inland 50s coast side, those temperatures dropping off tomorrow morning with some patchy fog, but quickly clearing out of here and warming up tomorrow afternoon into the 80s for our warmest spots. let's take a look the winds one more time because they will be ramping up. as i mentioned by sunday morning, strongest along the coast. but by sunday afternoon you start to see 32 miles an hour. santa rosa 25

afternoon with the third annual juneteenth festival at city hall , the city is hosting several events celebrating juneteenth, helping support black communities and businesses. there is a street festival tomorrow in the fillmore district, and another one sunday in the bayview. so it's a great weekend of celebrations and also happening now. >> food, rides and a lot of fun. it is opening day at the alameda county fair this year. >> over a half million visitors are expected over the next three weeks. >> abc seven news reporter anser hassan is live at the fair in pleasanton with the story. unser i assume you're cleaning up at the midway? >> dan there's a lot of crowds coming in. you can see a lot of activities here. a couple fun facts about this fair. it is the

largest county fair in northern california. they have a taylor swift band, tribute band and despite all the games and the attractions, food is the number one draw. and this year, a couple of new attractions as well. uppable and frisbee act is one of the new attractions at this year's alameda county fair. amazing weather at a fair like this. >> and since you guys haven't had a stunt dog show with dock diving and frisbee dogs before, it's really cool for us to come. >> most are rescue dogs. some have even been featured on tv show competitions. ramiro campuzano says the animals are a family favorite. >> the animal shows and just the petting zoo and the pony rides and stuff like that for the kids and the babies. always a good time. yeah, always a good time. every year. >> for the adults, horse racing will be big this year and the stakes are also big. >> our biggest one is $150,000 on july 7th. i think in total it's almost $2 million of prize

realistic, they're compelling. they're persuasive. >> california attorney general rob bonta says fraudulent schemes targeting seniors are a big deal. >> older adults lose nearly $3 billion to financial frauds and schemes every year. >> authorities want everyone to be aware of scams, fraud and financial elder abuse. >> the scams vary from call center scams, romance scams, grandparent scams. ai is being used more to simulate loved ones in danger and in jeopardy who need money now, and you need to send it. >> community leaders say scammers prey on elders and ethnic communities such as san francisco's chinatown by leveraging culture and language to gain trust. one common scam is the blessing scam. >> two cantonese speaking middle aged people will approach a chinese cantonese speaking older female and once they approach this single elderly, either waiting in the bus stop or

walking around by by herself. then they started to talk to them. uh- very trained scammers who could talk up to the seniors about they need blessing because they don't look too well. >> this attorney represents the victims of a $39 million ponzi scheme that targeted residents of chinatown. >> it targeted a monolingual chinese community. in this case, it was someone they trusted and knew for over 30 years. >> have you ever had anyone try and scam you? >> some by phone and some by email? camilla says scammers have tried to contact her asking for her address or social security number. >> i always hang up. i don't want to say anything. >> authorities say it's important to report these scams and fraudulent crimes so that law enforcement can follow up, and so that it doesn't happen to anyone else. >> we know that these crimes are underreported. so if we don't have them report it, then we can't catch the people that are doing this. >> besides detecting police crimes against elders should be reported to adult protective services suspected cases of

elder abuse can also be reported at the state level to the attorney general's office in san francisco. suzanne vaughn, abc seven news. >> attorney general rob bonta says today's supreme court ruling striking down the trump era ban on bump stocks will not affect california's law against them. in a 6 to 3 decision, the justices ruling that the gun accessory does not turn a rifle into a machine gun. a people who use bump stocks with semiautomatic weapons can fire rapidly, kind of like using a machine gun. a gunman used a bump stock when he killed 60 people and wounded hundreds of others at a las vegas music festival back in 2017. >> the legacy of california's chicano movement is on display in oakland. the exhibit at the oakland museum celebrates the push for fair treatment, equal opportunity, and civil rights for mexican americans. abc7 news anchor and race and social justice reporter julian glover got a sneak peek

several years. and it's a change in behavior that may turn out to be long term. we're watching as part of our effort to build a better bay area by noting changes in our climate and our environment. >> but right now, we've seen about ten of these. what appears to be juvenile white sharks in the area young juvenile, great white sharks hugging the shoreline is a common scene in southern california for more than a century, the area has been known as the home of the so-called juvenile nurseries. >> stretches of beach where the young sharks can feed on fish before they've grown up enough to hunt large mammals like sea lions. but with a spike in ocean temperatures, their range began to change. >> we had had the warming waters and we they started seeing all these, juvenile white sharks up here. >> doctor david ebert is a program director at the moss landing marine laboratories. he and fellow shark researchers first began noticing the juveniles in an area of monterey bay roughly a decade ago. and he says their numbers have not only held steady, they appear to be growing. >> yeah, there'd be days i'd

count like 40 or i just stopped counting about 40. you just see so many of these sort of six, eight foot white sharks down there. and that is unusual to see here in monterey bay. >> typically, we first reported the northward migration as researchers were connecting it to an event known as a heat blob , a massive concentration of warm water that appeared off the coast in 2014. and while many researchers believe warming ocean temperatures are a driver, they say several factors could actually be in play. >> that's kind of a common phenomenon that we're starting to see. >> professor chris lowe directs the shark lab at cal state university, long beach, he says, shifts in ocean temperatures are also causing changes in southern california. >> our waters were cold, so we suspect a bunch of sharks left southern california, and maybe some went up there. >> and while the juvenile sharks are unsettling at first sight, experts say they're not the threat to humans that adult white sharks can be. and their increase in numbers could be viewed as a success story for better management of our coastal
