for joining us. i'm phil lipof. three months after announcing that she had cancer and that she was starting preventive chemotherapy, a rare update from princess kate today relaying what many hope is a sign she's on the mend. here's abc's maggie rulli. >> reporter: today, princess kate taking a brave step, announcing she will appear in public for the first time this year. the palace releasing this new photo, the very first glimpse we've had of the princess of wales in months. >> i thought the photograph of catherine by the tree and the natural environment -- clearly, the positive days have been enhanced by being out in nature and being with the kids and just doing normal things. >> reporter: and the princess issuing a personal and candid statement, updating the public about her ongoing cancer treatment writing -- good days and bad days.

on those bad days you feel weak, tired, and you have to give in to your body resting. but on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well." adding, "my treatment is ongoing and will be for a few months. on the days when i feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home." >> i thought the language was warm, addressing some of the big issues she's had to face during this challenge for her. >> reporter: the princess saying she will join her children at tomorrow's trooping the colour, a centuries-old parade full of that famous british pomp and circumstance, celebrating the king's birthday. the annual trooping the colour is a chance for the royal family to be on display in their finest, famously greeting the public from the balcony of buckingham palace. two years ago, queen elizabeth made her final appearance on the balcony just three months before she died.

while her great grandson, prince louis, stole the show. last year, princess kate rode in a carriage with her children and queen camilla, a joyous moment celebrating the new king, charles iii. since then, the monarchy has been shaken to its core with both the princess of wales and king charles announcing they both have cancer. although specific details about theiring decease have not been released. >> to remind everybody that this isn't coming back to work. it's a one-off. she's in a state, if you like, of flux at the moment. it may not be an official return to royal duties, but it's a return to being seen in public. >> reporter: since announcing her cancer diagnose in march, the palace has given few updates on kate's health. her husband, prince william, marking the 80th anniversary of d-day earlier this month. he shared this moment with a veteran from world war ii. >> i was going to ask you if your wife is getting any better?

>> she's better, yes. she'd love to be here today. >> reporter: the princess of wales at the center of a storm of conspiracies and speculation that spread like wildfire on the internet after she stepped back from her royal duties to focus on her health. >> pressure intensifying on princess kate to speak out as she recovers from abdominal surgery. >> something very bizarre is going on with kate middleton. >> reporter: the conspiracies fueled by people who knew nothing about it. >> here was a story that somehow the entire world, even people that never cared about the royals before, were invested in. where's kate? what's going on with kate? >> reporter: it all started from the very moment kensington palace announced her abdominal surgery in january. >> kensington palace had initially said she wouldn't appear publicly until after easter. >> reporter: before her shocking cancer announcement, kate was last seen on christmas day. then she totally disappeared from public life. when we finally did hear from

her, an instagram post on british mother's day in march, it only made thing worse. >> questions continue to swirl around the edited picture of princess kate and her children. >> they were trying to quell the online noise and conspiracy theories by saying, she's here, she's looking okay. actually what it proved was that she'd messed around with photoshop and people said, it's fake. >> reporter: four hours later, the world's biggest photo agencies removed the image, saying it had been manipulated. >> that added fuel to the flames. well, they faked the photograph. it totally backfired. >> reporter: kate herself took the blame and chalked it up to an experiment with editing. and just six days later, obsession spiked with this viral video of her farm shop visit with prince william released by tmz. then, the moment that silenced everyone. >> in january, i underwent major abdominal surgery in london.

and at the time, it was thought that my condition was noncancerous. the surgery was successful, however, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. my medical team, therefore, advised that i should undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy. >> reporter: the future queen revealed she has cancer at 42 years old. the palace not sharing what type. >> we hope that you'll understand that as a family, we now need some time, space, and privacy while i complete my treatment. >> i think a lot of people realized, you know, this was really serious. this was a really difficult time. >> reporter: the public scrutiny of kate coming at the same time that king charles also stepped back from public duties for treatment. he returned to the royal stage this spring, appearing alongside his son, wife, and other world leaders at the d-day commemorations earlier this month. further adding to the strain on the royal family, prince harry and meghan markle's departure from their roles as working

royals in 2020. the couple spilling the details of life as a royal in an explosive netflix documentary. >> i wasn't just being thrown to the wolves, i was being fed to the wolves. >> reporter: since then, the reported rift between the couple and the royal family only appearing to grow. harry only spending 45 minutes with his father after flying to london upon learning he had cancer. and not seeing his father at all on his most recent trip to london in may. harry and his brother are reportedly not on speaking terms. >> we know that king charles has spoken about his vision for a slimmed-down monarchy. do you think this is what he envisioned? >> this is not the slimmed-down monarchy that king charles dreamed of. he imagined a lineup of his strongest royals and family, including prince harry. and now we have a rather limp lineup at times. >> reporter: tomorrow's trooping the colour, led by princess

>> reporter: the 2015 release of "inside out," a box office success and a hit with critics, nominated for best original screenplay -- >> "inside out"! >> reporter: winning at the academy awards for best animated feature. >> i had such reverence for the first movie. just the way they orchestrated the emotional life is so accessible. it's very difficult to do that. >> we weren't given the names for them, which is why the first one was just so groundbreaking, and this one too. naming the emotions. identifying them. then normalizing them. that in itself is a powerful tool to remove the shame. >> my generation had no concept that this were emotions. we didn't talk about them. i knew that there was hunger, and i knew that i had to go to the bathroom, and that was the range of my emotion. >> reporter: did this take you guys back to your own teen years? what was teen amy like? >> well, yeah, let's see. i grew up in the '80s --

>> reporter: big hair? >> totally big hair. it was all the emotions that are in the film. you kind of feel like you're in your body but not really. trying to figure out where you fit in. i think they capture that in the film. >> reporter: when you're watching this film, did you connect with it as a parent? >> i would have liked to have had it a little earlier, because it's such a great tool for parents. just giving grace to the kids. obviously it's for everybody, but that season of life is so tricky. >> reporter: the themes now tackled in this new story. acknowledging uncomfortable emotions. >> just call my name, and i'm here for you. >> reporter: like anxiety. >> and my job is to protect her from the scary stuff she can't see. >> reporter: that can take control at the worst times. anxiety is not something that was talked about when i was a kid. i think it's such a wonderful thing. >> reporter: what did you draw on for this character? >> i drew on my own anxiety and kind of also my own jokey character that i developed for myself as an embodiment of my anxiety.

i like how realistic and, like, normal and not weaponized they make anxiety. i know that she's kind of the antagonist, but she's not the villain. >> reporter: what about "inside out 3"? will we see riley go into adulthood? >> there's a lot of milestones are i feel you could follow. i speak for both of us, let us know and we're there. >> reporter: there for whatever's next. but for now, heartbreak feels good in a place like this. >> what i like about movies like this is the empathy machine they create. i wish that i had it, because i wish i could have gone to go see it with my parents and been like, hey, i am going through stuff like this. >> phil: our thanks to rhiannon.
