we are going to begin with king charles undergoing cancer treatments. he's attending the trooping of the colours, honoring his birthday. and princess kate also battling cancer appearing in public for the first time in months. let's go to lama hasan in land following it all. lama, good morning again. >> reporter: good morning to you, gio. we saw all the royals gathering on the balcony here. among them of course princess katherine making her first public appearance since a cancer diagnosis. the pomp and pageantry is on full display today, despite the rain. trooping the colour is one of the most important days on the royal calendar. it's a chance to celebrate the king's birthday and the family to get together. kate looking stunning in white, front and center with her children prince george, princess charlotte and prince louie, riding in a carriage. the crowd buzzing with

excitement, the king taking the royal salute on horse back, he's only just recently returned to public-facing duties and like his daughter-in-law he is also having cancer treatment. the royal family then appearing at the famous balcony behind me, taking in the cheers from the crowd below and the roar from the royal air force flight path which you can probably hear. whit sncht? >> whit: lama, thank you so much. great to see king charles and princess kate looking well at the ceremonies. while king charles -- >> janai: yes. >> whit: we have to get that he's now king charles. his real birthday is november 14th. the monarch's birthday is celebrated at trooping the colour, which we mentioned there. so let's bring in victoria murphy. it is great to have you. we saw the princess joining the royal family publicly really the first time we've seen that since announcing her cancer diagnosis. what was the crowd's response? >> reporter: good morning. yes, there's been an incredible reaction from the crowd this morning. there's been big cheers. i had people shouting god save the king.

huge cheers for kate as she came by in a carriage. we should point out there's a full and prominent antimonarchy protest behind me. however the vast majority of the people here are here in joyful celebration. i've been speaking to the crowds and some of the people told me they only decided last night to come down when they found out kate would be making that first public appearance. there's a lot of excitement here to see her today but what people have been telling me i think also a real sense of concern and compassion for her well-being here and people wanting her to know they're here to support her coming back to work, very much on her own terms. >> gio: victoria, what was the significance of this moment? do you think this is a sign we'll see more of her to come? >> reporter: it's a very significant moment because it's the first time we saw her at all publicly this year. however, one thing kensington palace is keen to get across, this does not mark a full return to work. as she said herself, she has

good days and she has bad days. she started to do a little bit of work from home and she's hoping to make some public appearances in the next few weeks. it will very much depend on how she feels. nothing has been officially announced coming up yet. >> janai: and victoria, obviously today the celebration of the troops for the king's birthday but obviously with kate being there, so much of the attention is on her, but he is set to get back to his schedule. what is the sentiment? >> reporter: exactly, yes. we must remember that we have two members of the royal family being treated still for cancer. the king has been back in the public eye for several weeks now. he has been quite busy. he was very prominent at those d-day we had not long ago.

there's a question mark over both of their timetables. but today we were able to come together and have them both on the balcony for this real kind of moment of joy and it's what's been a difficult few months. >> janai: this was our first time seeing all three of the children in a while also. >> reporter: yes, you are absolutely right. first time to see them all together for some time. i think there's always a lot of excitement about seeing the royal children on the balcony at trooping the colour and to see them up there today, interacting, it's a really nice moment. it's a really special moment. >> janai: louie always putting on a show. victoria, thank you so much for joining us. look at them all on the balcony. turning back home to the catastrophic flooding in florida. as residents are still under a flood watch, abc's faith abubey joins us from miami with more. good morning again, faith. >> reporter: good morning, janai. there's a break in the downpours right now but you can see behind me this road is covered in water. we're seeing some big trucks try

to get across. one made it across a while ago. there's a vehicle back there that's been abandoned. this entire area was impassable last night. however it looks like the water is starting to recede here. this is not over yet. millions are still under flood watch and several south florida counties are under states of emergencies. this weekend, officials in miami-dade deploying trucks to rescue citizens, the water rendering roads impassable. people seen wading through the water. some areas got over two feet of rain, right now officials are warning residents to avoid flooded areas. but the flood watch that was supposed to expire has been extended through tonight. we're hoping this will be over for residents soon. homeowners are weary, they're ready to get back home and assess the damage. gio? >> gio: and we still see the rain falling behind you. faith, thank you so much. we turn to the faa investigating the frightening plunge of a southwest airlines jet coming within 400 feet of the ocean. the incident happened last april

when, according to bloomberg, the boeing 737 max 8 flying off the coast of hawaii was forced to abandon a landing attempt due to inclement weather. the report citing a memo and saying the first officer inadvertently cut the speed causing the plane to descend. when the warning alarms went off, the captain ordered the first officer to increase thrust and climb back up. the flight landing safely in honolulu with no reported injuries. thank goodness. >> whit: a frightening event there. vice president kamala harris announcing the u.s. will provide $1.5 billion to support ukraine, including new funding to repair the country's energy infrastructure damaged in the war. expand power generation. encourage private sector investment and protect energy infrastructure. harris is in switzerland attending the ukraine peace summit where she's meeting with ukrainian president zelenskyy. coming up here in our "gma" morning menu, we're getting

>> janai: we're back now with our "gma" cover story and school is out for some for summer. and it's time for some fun in the sun. but how do we avoid a learning loss for kids? parenting expert ericka souter is joining us. always great to have you especially when you're the lime to my lemon this morning. it's important to keep kids on track during the summer months with their learning. why and how do we do it? >> first of all, i should tell

you why it's so important to avoid the summer slide. we found kids are more anxious and stressed when they get back to school and there's learning loss and they don't know where to begin and they feel behind. so it's really important. there's little things parents can do to prep them for the school year. one, you want to keep a schedule, have them get up at 9:30, have breakfast, have something planned whether in the house or out of the house. keep a reading list through the summer, even early readers can take part in it. you can use online education al apps. have your older kids take an online summer course. it can be in cooking, origami, anything they're interested in but keep them most evaluated. and don't ignore the summer outline. do three to five pages a week and it keeps them active and interested in learning. >> gio: i remember when i was a kid i had that deep separation anxiety when i was going to

school for the first time. it's still traumatic because i remember. how do you prepare kids for something like that and to deal with that kind of anxiety? >> there's a lot of anxiety going to camp. not every kid is excited about going to sleep-away camp for five weeks, or even going today camp for the first time. so you want to prep your kids. it doesn't mean you want to take away the hardships, you want kids in uncomfortable situations that are safe where they build up skill sets. but if they're worried about summer camp, ask them what they're worried about. a lot of them are afraid of making friends so you can work together to figure out how to do conversation starters. but you also want to make sure that you communicate everything they'll be experiencing at summer camp. lots of camps have lists of what the day will be like, what the food options will be, what the activities are. make sure that the kids know that. you want to focus on the benefits they'll have. they'll learn new skills.

they will make new friends. they'll have a lot of fun. lastly, you want to model confidence for them. if you're anxious and nervous about their camp experience, they're going to feed off that. then they'll be more anxious and nervous. >> whit: parents never get anxious about these things. >> exactly. >> whit: it will be phenomenon, kids. get in the car. what about the kids staying home while the friends are away, what are things to prevent loneliness and boredom? >> since the pandemic parents are on high alert for loneliness and depression in their kids. they want to make sure they're connected. one of the best ways to do it is find a summer job. don't just say find a job. help be a partner in the process. help with the resume. and encourage them to have an interest or hobby that has nothing to do with their friends, something they can do on their own that makes them feel good about themselves. and lastly find a volunteer opportunity where they can connect with other like-minded teens and do something they care about. >> whit: i like that. that's great. >> janai: and boredom isn't

"presumed innocent" is starring jake gyllenhaal on apple plus. it was also a harrison ford movie in 1990 but this series is updated for a modern audience, gripping from the beginning, you have a dead body within the first four minutes of episode one. >> gio: just like we like them. >> though he's the lead prosecutor jake seems suspicious from the jump. >> janai: i got too excited. >> we like it when it's exciting from the start. not necessarily a dead body within four minutes.

here with our series summer saturdays. and we have creative ideas to keep the kids busy. the owner of the craft studio, lindsay hughes, is here. good morning. >> good morning, so excited to be here. >> gio: we're excited you're here. henry is here also. you're going to show us this craft you have combining art with science. >> yes. parents are now camp counselors. we have to keep our kids busy. i have great ideas. salt water painting it combines science and art. it's so simple. take your school glue and paint it on this piece of paper, and then you sprinkle some sea salt and let it dry. henry has started watercoloring. you add your watercolor to the salt and it expands the color like magic. >> gio: that is so cool. >> right. isn't it so fun? when they're done they look like summary treats. you can elevate it. add popsicle sticks. >> gio: how fun are these? i love it. >> keeps them busy for a long time, too.
