♪♪ captioned by los angeles distribution and broadcasting, inc. this is something we have not said all year. there is a red flag warning tonight for part of the bay area, meaning there is a risk for wildfires. good evening, i'm lauren martinez. the red flag warning just went into effect, and it covers a pretty big swath of northern california. for a look at where is the greatest concern for a fire, let's get to spencer christian. spencer. >> okay, lauren. you're right. it does cover a big portion of northern california, most of the northern sacramento valley, and areas that are a part of the bay area and adjacent to the bay

area. here's a look at the map, and you can see that it's in effect until 8 p.m. monday. it covers again a large portion of the northern sacramento valley, plus solano county and a good portion of lake county and little bits of northern sonoma and napa counties. humidity will be between 10 and 20, which is dangerously low during this period of time. gusts will range from 25 to 35mph. right now, looking at the immediate bay area, the winds are well. they're breezy, but not terribly strong, but the wind gusts will intensify during the daytime, diminish at night, and humidity will increase at night and diminish during the day. you add the low humidity and the gusty winds together. high fire danger. so right now the fire danger index indicates that we are currently in the low to moderate range. but by midday tomorrow we'll see much of the north bay and portions of the east bay in the moderate to high range. by mid afternoon to late afternoon. many parts of the north bay and interior east bay will be in the high to very high risk. now, of course, that will all diminish tomorrow night as again the humidity increases and

the winds decrease. but again monday into monday afternoon, we'll see more of the bay area in that high to very high risk category. and then after monday we can rest a little bit more easily because the fire danger will diminish. i'll have the full accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later. lauren. all right spencer. >> thank you. gusty winds and dry grass can be a recipe for fires. abc seven news reporter ryan curry spoke with cal fire, who is preparing for a potentially busy weekend. >> the sounds of bugs chirping and the wind blowing, but the latter could be dangerous the rest of the weekend. >> we are expecting critical fire weather conditions, either ongoing or expected within the next 24 hours. the national weather service has issued its first red flag warning of the year. >> the warning is up for parts of solano county all the way up to redding. >> within that window of time, expect a very low relative humidities, gusty winds, and very dry fuels. >> windy and dry. two things putting cal fire on high alert for possible wildfires.

>> anything that really starts will take off. those those fuels are, you know one our fuels which light flashy and they'll move quite rapidly. >> look at these weeds blowing in the wind. this is exactly what cal fire and the national weather service are worried about. one spark could ignite this field, and with these winds, that fire could spread fast. already we have seen multiple grass fires. the cal fire earlier this month burned almost 15,000 acres. firefighters back then said dry hills mixed with strong winds caused that fire to spread quickly. those fears are back this weekend. >> this is pretty predicted with the grass crop that we've seen from the rains. the later rains this winter, we had an above average season of rainfall, which means that our grass crops are just going to grow higher. >> it means residents living near these dry hills need to be ready in case they need to evacuate. james cohen knows a lot about that. he once lived near napa when a wildfire forced him out. >> we had to rehome ourselves temporarily and, you know, there

wasn't anything that we could do other than that. >> this weekend, he's ready for what can happen. >> i keep supplies with me, you know, like a first aid kits, backpacks, ready to go. things like that. but i don't think there's really much you can do to prepare for a fire at that scale. >> all he can do now is hope a fire does not break out near his house in benicia. ryan curry abc seven news. >> in the south bay, a small fire burned about 18 acres southeast of san jose earlier today. time lapse video from around 930 this morning shows plenty of white smoke. the flames near san felipe road and las animas road didn't burn any buildings and no one was hurt. and don't forget, you can access the same weather tracking tools that spencer and our weather team use, as well as our air quality tracker. just go to the weather section on our abc seven bay area app or abc seven news.com. a warning from sheriff's deputies on the peninsula after a mountain lion sighting in millbrae. deputies rushed to an open space between

vallejo drive and interstate 280 this morning after a resident reported seeing a big cat. the sheriff's office says no injuries or incidents have been reported. deputies urge residents to be careful in the area and to call 911 if they see the animal. new developments authorities have released the name of the woman arrested after a shooting and standoff that sent police on the peninsula rushing to two locations this past thursday. 34 year-old brittany stewart, a resident of ceres in stanislaus county, was booked into san mateo county jail earlier this week. she is accused of shooting a woman near east hillsdale boulevard and norfolk street in san mateo. the victim was found at a gas station in san carlos and taken to the trauma center for treatment. stewart faces felony charges related to the shooting. well the fremont hub cvs store, where a security guard was fatally shot thursday night, has reopened. that's according to a

company spokesperson. the location was closed all of yesterday after the deadly encounter. the store security guard has not yet been identified. another person was rushed to the hospital with stab wounds. authorities have said the violence happened after an altercation between the two. new details about a robbery targeting workers at the contra costa county fair. antioch police now tell us it's just one of a bigger series of crimes, ten and a little more than two months. >> everybody's free game right now with these criminals, and it's everywhere. yeah >> county fair leaders told us last month armed robbers stole $90,000 from employees trying to make a deposit at a bank. police now say they're investigating several more robberies and attempted robberies of people in bank parking lots. they say in other cases, the suspects watched victims leaving and followed them home. police say the first crime happened april 1st, with the most recent on

tuesday. it's happened at at least eight banks across antioch. suspects have stolen purses, phones, jewelry, cash and of course, that $90,000 deposit from the fair. antioch police say they've detained two suspects. it's unclear if all the crimes are connected. well, movies could once again be shown at the downtown san francisco center shopping mall. the chronicle is reporting the mall is in talks with another operator to reopen a nine screen theater there. cinemark closed the operation last summer, months before its lease expired. the report in the chronicle did not spell out a timeline. this week, the mall announced seven new leases for the mall, which has been plagued by vacancies. 1000 students got their second chance at the sat test today after bad internet canceled their first attempt. spots for the sat can be tough to get in the bay area, which is why families were so frustrated earlier this month when a wi-fi

failure forced the college board to cancel a test at a hotel in oakland. today, the students took a make up test at the hilton in union square. >> we really regret that so many students had difficulty on the first, but we're really happy that two weeks later we were able to reschedule all of them and give them a chance to take the sat, show what they know and do their best. >> the college board says it's running short on testing sites in the bay area, making it hard for students to schedule tests. california's public colleges are no longer requiring the sat and act for admissions, though stanford made headlines recently when it brought the requirement back. juneteenth is officially recognized on wednesday, june 19th. the holiday marks 159 years since union troops arrived in texas and announced that enslaved black people were free. but today, people packed fillmore street in san francisco for the city's annual celebration. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn gives us a closer look at the festivities

in the historical black community. >> we have eight blocks of celebrating fillmore street in san francisco is bringing together a vibrant community to celebrate juneteenth with music, food and festivities. >> a lot of fun. >> it's a combination of bringing youth, seniors was a mixture of culture, everybody together for well, we've been celebrating it here over 80 years. >> only second to galveston, texas. >> juneteenth marks a monumental day in u.s. history. we celebrate resilience. >> we celebrate freedom. we celebrate the fact of progress, of how far we've come. >> considered freedom day because it was when the people, african americans and texas, two years after the emancipation proclamation was signed, received notification that they are indeed free. >> juneteenth is also a homecoming of sorts for many people in san francisco's black community. many come to celebrate the holiday in the

fillmore district, a historically african-american neighborhood once deemed the harlem of the west. >> and our parents all tell the story of how it was hundreds of black businesses on fillmore, music on every corner. you know, blues clubs that were african american owned. that all happened before redevelopment. >> and these photographs that the heritage center spotlight how the fillmore was the epicenter of black entertainment, music and culture through the early 70s. >> you look at uh, you know, louis armstrong, you know, it's just these are icons remembering the fillmore's rich history and heritage, marking juneteenth freedom celebrations. >> they go hand in hand. >> this community was the core of the african american community in san francisco for so many years, and it's just great to bring this event to this community for future generations. >> it's a reminder it is important to make sure that we understand the significance of black people and how black people not only built this city, but built this country.

important for children. as an early education director, so much brain development happens in those early years. >> sf usd's overall budget plan could require closure of several schools schools. the district is expected to share its plan for picking which schools to close later this month. well, triumph over tragedy in san francisco today, years after a grandmother was brutally beaten in a park, the city is changing its name to honor her. loooooong died from her injuries months after the 2019 attack. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard talked to her loved ones about how renaming the park she loved is helping the community heal. >> a new name and a new beginning for this city park in san francisco's visitacion valley means abundant love. it's a sunny yee is talking about her grandmother, joy wong, for whom this park is named. the official dedication ceremony happening saturday. >> it's been a very hard journey, very painful, but also

very beautiful, he says. >> her, 88 year old grandmother came to this park, formerly visitacion valley playground, most every day. but in january of 2019, she was found badly beaten here and died months later from her injuries. the crime rocked the asian community. a 24 year old suspect was arrested and is awaiting trial. >> she is survived by great grandchildren, grandchildren and so having everyone coming together as a big family is really important. >> many hope the wong peace and friendship park will be a place of healing. >> i know it wasn't easy, but you took a devastating loss and you turned it into a win. >> relatives say renaming the park was originally the idea of community advocate ronald colthurst, who passed away last year, and he would bring all the african americans and the asians together, as one of his legacies was to make sure we rename this park. >> this is a true story of turning tragedy into triumph and

onshore flow that we've had all day and into the night. the wind right now is well it's breezy but we don't have any really powerful gusts at the moment. although we have 23 mile per hour surface winds at sfo, those winds are going to intensify significantly tomorrow. the 24 hour temperature change is not very significant either. we've got most locations about 2 or 3 degrees cooler right now than at this time last night. so let's take a closer look from sutro tower looking out over san francisco 56 degrees here in the city, right now. upper 50s at oakland and hayward, low 60s at san jose and redwood city, 52 degrees at half moon bay. a nice clear view from mount tam looking down onto the bay and onto san francisco. an unobstructed view because of the absence of fog. 65 degrees up in santa rosa right now. petaluma 5258 napa. mid 60s at fairfield and concord at 56 at livermore. and these are forecast headlines . father's day tomorrow. sunny and mild to warm. a lovely day. but tomorrow and monday we expect an increase in the winds. gusty winds will be ramping up significantly and elevated fire

danger of course, accompanies the increase in the winds, along with the lower humidity. so a red flag warning for high fire danger is in effect until 8 p.m. monday for a huge portion of the northern sacramento valley, including solano county and a large portion of lake county, with some smaller areas of northern napa county and northern sonoma county. so once again, during this period of time, look for humidity readings between 10 and 20. that's dangerously low, and wind gusts up to 25 to 35mph. now for the immediate bay area, the fire danger risk right now looks relatively low to moderate, but by midday tomorrow we'll see increasing risk. up north, it will be moderate to high. then late afternoon notice the yellows and the oranges indicating high to very high risk all across the north bay and into the interior east bay. tomorrow tomorrow night, once again, the winds will diminish. the relative humidity will increase. so the danger index decreases. but it increases again on monday as we get the afternoon. of course, winds and dryness. so two days to be

concerned about these, about the fire danger. and by tuesday we'll see that risk diminishing. we're going through the same graphic all over again. i guess it's repeating itself. so let's move along and take a look at the overnight forecast animation with the strong winds mixing out any clouds that might develop, it's going to be clear overnight and a sunny start to the day tomorrow. overnight lows mainly in the low 50s. highs tomorrow up to about 60 on the coast. mid 70s around the bay shoreline mid 80s inland. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. as you can see not much change in the temperature range from father's day tomorrow into monday and tuesday. basically mid to upper 80s will be the highs inland mid 70s around the bay shoreline. then on wednesday june 10th that even cools down a few degrees. but temperatures start to bounce back at the end of the week. by friday and saturday we'll be looking at some pretty hot weather inland, with highs in the mid to upper 90s, low 80s around the bay and low 60s on the coast. >> wow. >> well i'm glad tomorrow is beautiful so am i looking forward to it. great, spencer thank you. still ahead on abc

to england now, and the royal birthday bash for king charles. it was likely overshadowed by the return of princess kate as she made her first public appearance in months since her cancer diagnosis. just yesterday, she announced she would be able to attend what's known as trooping the color, which is one of the key events for the royal family. abc's llama hasan was there and has the pomp and pageantry from buckingham palace. reporter a long awaited royal return. >> the princess of wales making her first public appearance since revealing her stunning cancer diagnosis in march. catherine joining in on all the military pomp and pageantry of trooping the color. the king's official birthday parade supporting her father in law king charles, who is also undergoing treatment for an

the king on that balcony in a hugely significant moment for the family. after a period of such uncertainty. but kensington palace has been very clear that this is not a return to normal duties for the princess, and we don't know when we will see her again. they haven't announced any future engagements for her, and as princess catherine herself said, she is not out of the woods just yet. lama hassan abc news outside buckingham palace. >> well, sheer terror for these amusement park visitors in portland, oregon. a malfunction on the atmosphere. a swing ride left this group of 28 hanging upside down for about half an hour. crews managed to get the pendulum style ride working again after that, portland fire and rescue said they were ready to conduct high angle rope rescue if they had to. one person with a preexisting medical condition was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. everyone else walked away unharmed. eight people were wounded in what authorities are calling a random shooting spree

at a splash pad in the detroit suburbs of rochester hills. police say the shooter was tracked to a home where he was found dead with what's believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. some of the victims wounded were children one as young as eight years old. sheriff's investigators say the gunman fired 28 rounds, reloading multiple times. the conditions of those hurt have not been released. sean diddy combs has returned his key to new york city at the request from mayor eric adams. the mayor made the request in response to the release of a video showing combs attacking his then girlfriend inside a hotel hallway. adams has said he was deeply disturbed by the attack. combs career has been derailed by numerous accusations of sexual abuse, as well as a federal criminal sex trafficking investigation. earlier this month, howard university rescinded an honorary degree awarded to combs and ended a scholarship program in his name.

second harvest food bank doles out over 1 million pounds of food donations each month that allows the organization to feed about 75,000 people every month, a number that's increased significantly in the last few years. the growing need in the community has created a different problem a shortage of volunteers to help distribute food. the food bank is in

critical need of help on saturdays during the summer break. >> that's when a lot of students and families are on summer holidays and breaks. but unfortunately, the need to distribute food doesn't stop during that time. >> on weekends, they need at least 40 volunteers per shift to pack food for distribution. organizers say with current staffing levels, they usually have about 14. the legacy of california chicano movement is on display in oakland. the exhibit at the oakland museum celebrates the push for fair treatment, equal opportunity, and civil rights for mexican americans. abc seven news anchor and race and social justice reporter julian glover got a sneak peek >> step inside the oakland museum of california to experience the contributions and culture of the chicano movement broadened to chicken eggs in a nod to gender inclusivity.

conversation, unafraid of confronting the issues of the moment. like the movement it represents from not that long ago. >> this is gorgeous and so massive in scale. walk us through what we're looking at here because jimenez underwood is a fiber artist, but she also makes these mural borderline installations, and this one is site specific to oakland. >> the piece weaves together california's complex history of the westward expansion spurred by the gold rush represented in orange and yellow, the blue nodding to indigenous peoples that bold black line the us-mexico border. >> this is a botanica del barrio, a rolling remedies cart by an artist felicia montez from los angeles. >> instead of food, the artist offers remedies and encourages the community to contribute their knowledge. >> felicia is inviting everyone to write their own remedy and put them on the wall. so over time, this wall will be full of remedies that visitors can then

gain insight and share with one another. leveraging that knowledge from the community. right? because in community is where we heal, not on an individual level. an important artist because it really documents the aids epidemic in the chicano community, and they're always right on the table showing you the intimacy of home once again inviting you into the private in order to talk about a larger issue that affects our larger community. >> and many of these issues are still with us, a reminder of the work left to do to create a more inclusive future. >> there's no stopping someone from being who they are and celebrating who they are. if anything, this exhibition is what happens when you allow people to flourish. >> the exhibit is now open to the public and you have plenty

sharks assistant. the past two seasons, and he does have head coaching experience in the ahl. for the san jose job will be his first nhl head coaching gig, and he's set to be our guest on after the game tuesday night. we're going to hear from him. for the first time in franchise history, the sharks will have the first overall pick in the nhl draft. it's really a foregone conclusion at this point. they're going to pick macklin celebrini, whose father, rick, has been the warriors head trainer for the past six years. rick appeared on thursday's after the game with larry and described what it's like when your kid is set to be the number one overall pick. >> i know you can't say foregone conclusion he's going to be a shark. i'll say it for you, but what is that feeling like to know that i mean, your son is likely going to go number one. >> it's exciting. i mean, you run the gamut of emotions and it's, it's surreal. it's, hard to believe at times, and yet it's like you said, it's, around the corner, and we're so excited. it's been exhausting as well. that was really why that just all the demands on, on on

macklin. and then, you know, secondarily, our family just different interviews and asks and requests and, so, for 17 year old kid to see what he has gone through and how he's kind of handled it and conducted himself, that's probably makes me most proud right now. >> you and your wife, robin, you both played soccer growing up. so obviously, good genetics. i blame my parents for my lack of athletic skill. but did you have any idea that you would have. you have two sons that that are going to be in the nhl? >> yeah. we have a little 11 year old sort of, aspiring hockey player as well, son, as our fourth, yeah. i mean, listen, growing up in canada, it's you're so immersed in it. everywhere you look, it's hockey, you really can't get away from it. and it was just such an incredible environment for them. and so it wasn't a coincidence that they fell in love with the game and sort of followed their passions in that, in that area, although in the east bay. >> and i know that that macklin has been playing elsewhere. so

it wasn't like he went to high school here, but like the east bay is not loaded with hockey rinks. at least it's not vancouver. yeah. >> no. well, we grew up in the kids all were born and grew up in canada, up until, you know, six years ago when i, accepted this position with the warriors. so we, packed up and headed down as a family. and, so part of that, decision making was to make sure that there was a good hockey program down here for the boys to continue their development. but, i talked to brant burns at the time, and some of the players, and they sort of re reassured me that it was a great program down here for the boys to continue their, their path. and, so we bought a or we didn't buy a house. we actually rented a house at that point down in san jose fairly close to the rink. and, that's where the boys, kind of spent a year of their development before going on to, to minnesota. >> that is great stuff. game five, the stanley cup final right here on tuesday night on abc. seven new sharks head coach ryan warsofsky and san jose
