live dangerous. red flag weather is firing up for the weekend where the winds will be the worst, with new fires already burning. good morning. happy father's day to all the fathers out there. and it is sunday, june 16th. i'm gloria rodriguez.

let's get to start with a look at your weather. so how is the father's day weather shaping up? >> lisa? it looks good, but we are on alert because of those winds. those offshore winds have adjacent red flag warnings around the bay area. there's a look at live doppler seven where there's no fog at all because those winds have mixed things out in the atmosphere is so dry, gorgeous view from our sutro tower camera where it is 53. in san francisco. cool 45 half moon bay, 57, in san jose and from mount tam right now, sun coming up at 547. we've got low 50s, santa rosa and napa with upper 50s, concord and fairfield. so 24 hours ago we were cooler. this morning we are warmer up in the north bay and cooler at the coast, so our red flag warning for solano county, lake county with north winds gusting to anywhere from 25 to 35 miles an hour, allowing that relative humidity to drop to critical levels. so locally we're clear. we're sunny and we'll see some low to mid 80s inland with those dry winds throughout the afternoon mid 70s around the bay

shore and gusty winds at the coast. gloria. >> all right. thank you so much lisa. and we know gusty winds and dry grass can be a recipe for fires. abc seven news reporter ryan curry spoke with cal fire, who is preparing for a potentially busy weekend. >> the sounds of bugs chirping and the wind blowing, but the latter of the two could be dangerous. the rest of the weekend. >> we are expecting critical fire weather conditions, either ongoing or expected within the next 24 hours. >> the national weather service has issued its first red flag warning of the year. the warning is up for parts of solano county all the way up to redding. >> within that window of time, expect a very low relative humidities, gusty winds and very dry fuels. >> windy and dry. two things putting cal fire on high alert for possible wildfires is anything that really starts will take off. >> those those fuels are, you know, one our fuels which light flashy and they'll move quite rapidly. look at these weeds

blowing in the wind. >> this is exactly what cal fire and the national weather service are worried about. one spark could ignite this field, and with these winds that fire could spread fast. already we have seen multiple grass fires. the cal fire earlier this month burned almost 15,000 acres. firefighters back then said dry hills mixed with strong winds caused that fire to spread quickly. those fears are back this weekend. >> this is pretty predicted with the grass crop that we've seen from the rains. the later rains this winter, we had an above average season of rainfall, which means that our grass crops are just going to grow higher. >> it means residents living near these dry hills need to be ready in case they need to evacuate. james cohen knows a lot about that. he once lived near napa when a wildfire forced him out. >> we had to rehome ourselves temporarily and, you know, there wasn't anything that we could do other than that this weekend, he's ready for what can happen. i keep supplies with me. you know, like a first aid kits, backpacks, ready to go. things

like that. but i don't think there's really much you can do to prepare for a fire at that scale. >> all he can do now is hope a fire does not break out near his house in benicia. ryan curry abc seven news in the south bay, a small fire burned about 18 acres southeast of san jose yesterday. >> a time lapse video from yesterday shows plenty of white smoke. the flames near san felipe road and las animas road didn't burn any buildings and nobody was hurt. cal fire is investigating a fire that has burned more than 1000 acres near oroville in butte county. the so-called dunes fire ignited at 3:20 p.m. on saturday at four dunes way and palermo hancock highway. one structure in agriculture, outbuilding and a few buildings have been destroyed. cal fire believes the fire may have started near the area where the structure burned. fire officials say they faced a few challenges with containing that fire. >> right now, our biggest challenge is getting the bulldozer lines, our containment

lines all the way around the fire. there is some difficult terrain out there and some some rocky areas that we're having a little bit of a hard time with all evacuation warnings in the area have been lifted, the dunes fire is currently 10% contained down in southern california. >> the los angeles county fire has issued evacuation orders because of a massive brush fire. the blaze was first reported around two yesterday afternoon on gorman road in gorman. more than 1200 people were forced to evacuate last night. flames have since burned through more than 10,500 acres. there have been no reported injuries at this time, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. and don't forget, you can access the same weather tracking tools that our weather team uses, as well as our air quality tracker. just go to the weather section on our abc seven bay area app or abc seven news.com. a warning from sheriff's deputies on the peninsula after a mountain lion sighting in millbrae. deputies

rushed to an open space between vallejo drive and interstate 280 on saturday morning after a resident reported seeing a big cat, the sheriff's office says no injuries or incidents have been reported, and deputies are urging residents to be careful in the area. also call 911 if they see the animal. new developments authorities have released the name of the woman arrested after a shooting and standoff that sent police on the peninsula rushing to two locations this past thursday. 34 year-old brittany stewart, a resident of ceres in stanislaus county, was booked into san mateo county jail earlier this week. she is accused of shooting a woman near east hillsdale boulevard and norfolk street in san mateo. the victim was found at a gas station in san carlos and was taken to the trauma center for treatment. stewart faces felony charges related to that shooting, and we have new video into our newsroom this morning. you can see the moment where a group of 20 violently broke into a sunnyvale jewelry

store. it happened on wednesday at png jewelers. they smashed nearly every display case in just 2.5 minutes. police pursued one vehicle and caught all five suspects inside, despite their attempt to ditch the car and run . the fremont hub cvs store, where a security guard was fatally shot on thursday night, has now reopened. that's according to a company spokesperson. the location was closed all of friday after the deadly encounter. the store security guard has not yet been identified. another person was rushed to the hospital with stab wounds. authorities have said that the violence happened after an altercation between the two. new details about a robbery targeting workers at the contra costa county fair. antioch police now tell us it's just one of a bigger series of crimes. ten in a little more than just two months, everybody's free game right now with these criminals, and it's everywhere. >> yeah. >> and then they're requiring county fair leaders told us last

month that armed robbers stole $90,000 from employees trying to make a deposit at a bank, and police now say that they are investigating several more robberies and attempted robberies of people in bank parking lots. they say in other cases, the suspects watched victims leaving and actually followed them home. police say the first crime happened on april 1st, with the most recent on tuesday. it's happened at least eight banks across antioch suspects have stolen purses, phones, jewelry, cash and of course, that $90,000 deposit from the fair. antioch police say that they've detained two suspects and it's not clear if all of the crimes are connected. and movies could once again be shown at the downtown san francisco center shopping mall, the chronicle is reporting that the mall is in talks with another operator to reopen a nine screen theater there. cinemark closed the operation last summer, months before its lease expired. the report to the

chronicle did not spell out a timeline. this week, the mall announced seven new leases for the mall, which has been plagued by vacancies. 1000 students got their second chance at the sat test after bad internet canceled their first attempt. spots for the sat can be tough to get in the bay area. that's why families were so frustrated earlier this month when a wi-fi failure forced the college board to cancel a test at a hotel in oakland saturday. the students took a makeup test at the hilton in union square. >> we really regret that so many students had difficulty on the first, but we're really happy that two weeks later we were able to reschedule all of them and give them a chance to take the sat show what they know and do their best. >> and the college board says it's running short on testing sites in the bay area, making it hard for students to schedule tests. california's public colleges are no longer requiring the sat and act for admissions, though stanford made headlines recently when it brought the requirement back. well, now

is almost going to rise there pretty soon. beautiful colors there in the sky. so of course we'll check in with lisa in just a little bit to get your weekend forecast, your father's day forecast. and we've been following protests at uc santa cruz for more than a month now, ranging from a pro-palestinian encampment that ended in dozens of arrests to a worker strike, and now a tense school year is ending, with some university leaders skipping the commencement events. the chancellor of uc santa cruz and other executives are not attending this weekend's graduation ceremonies, saying that they were targeted for disruption. university leaders said that they didn't want graduates to be overshadowed by protests. >> they didn't want to do detract from the celebratory nature. but the only reason they would have distracted from the celebratory nature is because of their complete disregard for students, and the fact that that disregard for students has created such a kind of negative feelings between the students towards admin commencement events at uc santa cruz continue

throughout the day and also today, stanford's main commencement ceremony. >> it will be limited to people with tickets and a group of parents and educators are sending a message to the san francisco unified school district about keeping aapi language programs in the classroom. they held a rally today at school district headquarters calling for the district to preserve and expand this programs. particular cantonese and mandarin. actually, i think this was yesterday as of usd is considering cutting several bilingual classes to help balance its budget for the 2025 2026 school year. >> having bilingual cantonese, mandarin, tagalog, vietnamese, all of our diverse aapi languages is just really important for the city. at a time when s.f, usd, and ccsf are struggling with enrollment, it's important for children. as an early education director, so much brain development happens in those early years, s.f.

ucsd's overall budget plan could require closure of several schools. >> the district is expected to share its plan for picking which schools to close later this month. people living in a group of rvs parked on one san francisco street could be forced to leave as soon as next month. the city is planning a new four hour parking limit on winston drive near lake merced, close to stonestown galleria. more than a dozen rvs are parked there, and a group of people who live in their vehicles is calling on the city to help them find a new place to park. >> we're here because we don't have anywhere else to go. we don't have a safe parking site, we don't have stability. why do you guys want to kick us out when we're not harming anyone? >> we are not like criminals or something like that. we are humans. we're like all people. but different lives. >> sfmta says they're working to find safe parking resources for those there, and residents say they haven't been offered any better alternatives. and some say they will stay when the parking enforcement starts.

triumph over tragedy in san francisco this weekend, years after a grandmother was brutally beaten in a park, the city is changing its name to honor her. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard talked to her loved ones about how renaming the park she loved is helping the community heal. >> a new name and a new beginning for this city park in san francisco's visitacion valley means abundant love. susana yee is talking about her grandmother, joy wong, for whom this park is named. the official dedication ceremony happening saturday. >> it's been a very hard journey, very painful, but also very beautiful. >> yee says her 88 year old grandmother came to this park, formerly visitacion valley playground, most every day. but in january of 2019, she was found badly beaten here and died months later from her injuries. the crime rocked the asian community. a 24 year old suspect was arrested and is awaiting trial. >> she is survived by great

come together in times of real challenging situations. grandma wong's family hopes all will know peace and friendship when visiting here in san francisco. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> and a very rare japanese tea ceremony in san francisco in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the omoto sankei school of tea. members of the community and the public joined the consul general of japan to witness the 400 year old tradition at herbst theater. the ceremony was dedicated to values of peace and harmony, and tea was shared to express friendship and gratitude. well, let's go to meteorologist lisa argen tracking the forecast today and, lisa, we know, of course, it's father's day. a lot of people are planning celebrations today. is it going to be a good day to be outdoors? maybe have lunch with dad today? yeah. >> you know, it will be breezy in spots and we are watching for unfortunately the possibility of fire starts out there because the atmosphere has dropped off

in terms of moisture, anywhere from 5 to 40% over the past 24 hours. that means those dry northerly winds already at work, creating an environment where one little spark could create a fire. so everyone needs to be pretty vigilant today into tomorrow as our winds continue to be basically not from the coast, but from a more northerly component. and that's going to allow for that tight pressure gradient. the windy conditions. and as we saw that red flag warning to the north and east of us, there's a look at our sutro tower camera where it is pretty this morning. 547 is the official sunrise. right now it is 53 in san francisco, 45 half moon bay. that's what happens when we have those low, long, cool nights looking at. actually, it's a short night, right? because we have that sun setting at 834. so one of the longer nights, certainly as we get to the summer solstice, 57 in san jose, mount tam, right now, you can see how gorgeous it is out there. 51 santa rosa, 48,

in petaluma with mid 50s by the delta upper 50s in concord. and our forecast headlines calling for sunny conditions, mild to warm. so when those winds aren't with us, those north winds really feel warm or cut off from that onshore flow. and looking at the forecast for the rest of the day today into monday, those gusty winds. so they'll be with us as a system to the north and east of us, keeps the gradient up as it travels close to the bay area. that's going to keep the winds up the offshore winds, and then the elevated fire danger that has been issued since last week. and this is where we're watching the most critical weather as those fine fuels, mainly the grasses, are certainly dry and continue to get more dry from lake county to vacaville. and then our own fire danger index is moderate to low right now. but as we go through the afternoon, those winds pick up. you can see we get into the yellow category. even the very high index there where we could see the possibility of those fine fuels create a fire. here

we are in the afternoon on monday once again, those dry conditions. so hopefully not a day to barbecue or cut the grass because maybe that could wait a bit. as we'll see those winds continue to gust over 30 miles an hour. so the relative humidity by noontime 20% 36% hayward 16. petaluma and then by late in the afternoon, we're down to 2,012% in antioch, 16% in concord. so it is certainly dry out there. you may have felt it yesterday, 76 today in richmond. sunny skies, palo alto, low 70s, upper 70s in san jose and maybe a couple degrees below average. we have that sunny start, a windy afternoon with the fire danger going up today and tomorrow. looking at a return to an onshore flow on tuesday, low clouds and fog, that marine layer coming back throughout the middle of the week. those will be our coolest days. wednesday and the start of summer on thursday. and then looks like the heat is on for the end of the week and next weekend. >> wow. so maybe today for father's day, have lunch indoors. it looks like it's

>> there's a lot of fun. >> it's a combination of bringing youth, seniors is a mixture of culture. everybody together. >> well, we've been celebrating it here over 80 years. only second to galveston, texas. juneteenth marks a monumental day in u.s. history. >> we celebrate resilience. we celebrate freedom. we celebrate the fact of progress, of how far we've come considered freedom day because it was when the people, african americans and texas, two years after the emancipation proclamation was signed, received notification that they are indeed free. >> juneteenth is also a homecoming of sorts for many people in san francisco's black community. many come to celebrate the holiday in the fillmore district, a historically african-american neighborhood once deemed the harlem of the west. >> and our parents all tell the story of how it was hundreds of black businesses on film or music on every corner. you know,

your weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen and happy father's day to everybody who's at father happy father's day. >> nice morning ahead where we have clear sky. the marine layer wiped out due to the lack of humidity and those dry winds. and as we look at pier 39 right now, we've spun it around. you can see the rock from pier 39, 53, san francisco. it's a cool 45 half moon bay with low 50s in redwood city, mid 50s in hayward. there's the golden gate bridge, a little bit of a breeze, and of course, no marine layer. 51, santa rosa, 48 petaluma, upper 50s in concord. so this morning it's nice. it's a little milder out there in the north bay, 4 to 5 degrees milder, cool at the coast. but as we go through the day those winds are going to kick up. these are the upper elevation winds that you can see over 30 miles an hour. mount diablo, relative humidity in the 30% range and will be continuing to watch that as those dry northerly winds keep the air super lacking of moisture and that will allow for the possibility of fire starts for

sure around the bay. although the red flag warning is to the north and northeast of us, the sacramento valley, the northern sacramento valley. we're pretty dry here as well. the gusty winds on the coast. and we'll talk more in detail about a warm up into next week. gloria >> all right, lisa, thank you so much. this morning we're learning more about a shooting at a splash pad filled with families in michigan. the suspect opened fire randomly, leaving nine victims wounded, including at least two children. police have now confirmed the suspect died by suicide. abc's derrick dennis has more. >> the shooting happened on a warm summer afternoon in rochester hills, michigan, about 30 miles north of detroit. multiple victims range from children to adults enjoying the day at a water park on father's day weekend. video over the scene shows multiple shell case markers at the brooklyn splash pad, a popular water park in rochester hills. >> sad you you don't think it will happen in your neighborhood? >> oakland county sheriff

michael bouchard says the shooting appears to have been the act of a lone gunman. >> the individual pulled up, exited a vehicle, approached the splash pad, opened fire, reloaded and opened fire, reloaded, left. >> authorities say a semiautomatic handgun and three magazines were found at the scene, and multiple victims were hit, including at least two children. the youngest, a four year old. another eight year old shot in the head in critical condition. >> i, in my worst nightmare, couldn't imagine standing up here again talking about another active shooter. >> this agency has responded to multiple active shooters, multiple mass casualty. so unfortunately, this has become all too common in america, but especially too common in our community. >> this shooting in the same county as the oxford high school shooting in 2021 that left four students dead. >> it's a gut punch, obviously,

for us here in oakland county. we've gone through so many tragedies, you know, we're not even fully comprehending what happened at oxford. and, you know, now we have another complete tragedy that we're dealing with. derek dennis, abc news, new york. >> and this morning, police are searching for a suspect after two people were killed and multiple others were injured in a shooting at a juneteenth celebration in texas. >> it happened last night in round rock that's located about 20 miles north of austin. police say a fight broke out between two groups at a park where the celebration was being held. during the fight, someone pulled out a gun and started shooting, according to authorities. multiple people were shot. two of the victims died on the scene. >> it is unfortunate that we're here celebrating a wonderful event and we have a tragedy that happens. >> at least six people were rushed to local hospitals with potentially serious injuries.

it's not clear exactly how many people opened fire during that fight, and to the israel-hamas war. israel's military says it has started a daily tactical pause along a route in southern gaza to ramp up aid to the region. military officials say the pause would go into effect until further notice. it's intended to allow aid trucks to cross the israel gaza border. also new overnight, the idf announced at least eight soldiers were killed by an explosion during operations in southern gaza, according to the israeli military. this makes it one of the deadliest single incidents involving israeli troops since october 7th. the military also says two soldiers were killed in northern gaza this weekend after their tank was attacked, and to the red sea. now, the u.s. navy has rescued crew members from a greek owned ship that was attacked earlier in the week by houthi rebels. we told you about the ship yesterday, military officials say they airlifted the crew out safely overnight. however, they did say that one

of the sailors from the cargo ship is still missing. the attack caused severe flooding and damage to the vessel, forcing the crew to abandon it at sea. the houthis have taken responsibility for that attack and it is your voice, your vote. there's now less than two weeks before the first presidential debate. both candidates hit the campaign trail this weekend. former president trump looking to court voters in the critical battleground state of florida. or, excuse me, in michigan while president biden is in southern california for a star studded fundraiser. here's abc's chuck severson with the details. chuck, chuck, chuck, chuck. >> former president donald trump in michigan making a direct appeal to black voters in the heart of detroit. a democratic stronghold. we've done more for. >> and i say this. i say it proudly more for the black population than any president since abraham lincoln. that's a big statement. >> and true. >> joe biden has done nothing for you except talk his campaign

announcing a black americans for trump coalition, citing endorsement from numerous individuals, including some potential running mates, south carolina senator tim scott, florida congressman byron donalds and former hud secretary ben carson. >> the biden campaign blasting trump's reported comment that trump's black friends wouldn't be friends with him anymore if he were a racist, in a statement saying donald trump thinks the fact that he has many black friends excuses an entire lifetime of denigrating and disrespecting black americans. but black voters know better. in 2020, president joe biden won michigan by more than 150,000 votes nationwide. over 90% of black voters chose biden in 2020, but the 2024 race in michigan is close. fivethirtyeight's polling averages showing trump and biden nearly tied as of this month. president biden, meanwhile, is in los angeles for a star studded fundraiser on hand for the event, headliners julia roberts and george clooney, as well as a long list of celebrity guests. the event, similar to a fundraiser in new york this past

sky. half moon bay sutro. look at all that sun blinding us this morning. 51 santa rosa. and in petaluma it's a cool 4851 in napa with upper 50s concord livermore, 53 from santa cruz, 49 to the upper 70s today. so a beautiful day here. but of course we're going to be awfully vigilant the next few days as those fine fuels continue to dry out, mainly the grasses and with those offshore winds, it is going to be certainly a day to be advised of maybe not barbecuing or mowing the lawn and just enjoying the weather without hopefully any sparks to start fires today through tomorrow. really all season long, sunday and monday, gusty winds will continue to ramp up. then into tuesday we get back to the onshore flow. the marine layer will reform, but the red flag warning issued through monday and we're talking 8:00 monday night from vacaville to hidden valley lake and looking at our fire danger index, it ramps up as the winds also will be elevated throughout the

afternoon. so look at all the yellows and oranges there in the north bay. the santa cruz mountains, mount diablo this is for your monday once again, it returns as those winds will stay offshore, gusting to over 30 miles an hour throughout the afternoon. so it is going to be breezy. and the next several days we're looking at comfortable weather in our inland valleys. the coolest days wednesday and thursday. but then look what happens friday and saturday. high pressure builds and it looks to be a very warm end of the week into next weekend. possible some heat risks being advised for the national weather service as we get closer to that event. oracle park beautiful day although it will be breezy. winds over 25 miles an hour at times. upper 60s. so certainly on the mild side there. the rest of the bay enjoying mainly 70s from the peninsula to the east bay here 74 in oakland, upper 70s in san jose. so temperatures in and around average. looking at those mid 80s for concord, 86 in santa rosa and the accuweather seven day forecast. if you're headed to the coast, it is going to be
