>> words of encouragement. today from melinda french gates during stanford's commencement address. but hundreds of students didn't get her message. abc seven news starts now. >> from abc seven live. >> breaking news and that breaking news out of the north bay, this wildfire in sonoma county is a big concern right now due to really strong gusts, the flames have rapidly spread, fanned by the winds. this fire burning right now in healdsburg, and it started around 1230 today. and is 15% contained. flames have charred 150 acres. and let's get a better idea now of where that fire is burning. cal fire has named it the point fire. you see, it's burning at stewarts point, skaggs springs road, east of geyserville. and thank you for joining us. right now, i'm zach fuentes, before that fire ignited, crews in the north bay were on alert and the weather of course, is why abc7 news reporter cornell bernard spent the day with fire crews in the north bay with a look at how they're prepped for the fire's

red flag warning, now in effect for parts of the area. and cornell, there's a lot going on today. first, what can you tell us about that point? wildfire >> zach, i have to tell you, those red flag conditions, certainly getting the attention of firefighters all over the bay area, especially, like you said, up in the north bay, up in the sonoma county area where they are fighting the point fire at this hour. in fact, whereare here in american canyon, you can actually see the smoke that fire about 60 miles from where we are . that's where crews are battling the point. the point fire near lake sonoma. it's burned, like you said, 150 acres, 15% contained. cal fire says this is a mostly rural area, but evacuations have been ordered at this hour in the area of northwest healdsburg, west dry creek road, north of stang road to fall creek road. very windy right now, and that's been a very big concern to firefighters and homeowners all across the north bay.

>> this vegetation fire was burning sunday afternoon, sending up a lot of smoke in sonoma county near geyserville. >> cal fire dispatching these santa rosa based firefighting aircraft to the so-called point fire, which startedts in skaggsprin ray some evuationf lake sonoma. strong, gusty winds andow relative humidities are the two primary reasons that the red flag warning was called. >> this red flag conditions have cal fire oalert, i fire stations are fully staffed, and th sky crane chopper just arrived for the season at t santa ro air base. it's capable of dropping600 gallons of water on a fire all acrossli. >> we've had a lot more fire activity, so we have the resources that we need to sta attackg these fire and we're rey to go. >> firefhters say this wind driven grass fire was sparked sunday morning off highway 680 in martinez. firefighters stopped it at about one acre. the battalion chief expects his

crews to be very busy over the next 24 hours. >> this is what we prepare for. we train for this, but on days like this, we want to make extra sure that they're hydrated in the morning. they're expecting this sort of activity. >> neighbors living near open space say they have learned from the past. they know when humidity levels drop and winds pick up. they need to be on alert. neighbor gloria cabezas says she received an alert about the red flag conditions on her phone. >> when it gets windy, you know there's a little you know, we start, you know, try to come out and start watering our lawn. just you know, making sure, you know, we're trying to keep as safe as possible. all >> back live with a shot of that smoke which is drifting over san pablo bay right now and much of the napa valley. i just spoke with cal fire public information information officer jason clay a short time ago. he says winds, of course, are the biggest enemy right now in fighting the point fire in sonoma couy. and once again, mandatory evacuations have been issued for west dry creek road to fall creek road.

mount tam looking down onto the bay and onto san francisco, where it's 65 degrees right now. we have oakland and hayward in the low 70s, 78 at san jose, redwood city, 7459 at half moon bay, bright and breezy at the golden gate of the temperature readings right now 72 at petaluma, but mid 80s at santa rosa. low to mid 80s at napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. so on we go to our forecast headlines. next two days we'll have increased fire dang. so bear that in mind and be careful with any outdoor activity or any kind of activity that could spark fire. the main factors here in this fire concern are the gusty wind and the dangerously low humidity. we've got relative humidity readings right now lower than 20. and that's of course not a good thing. middle of the week though, the wind will ease. we'll have a milder weather pattern and the fire concerns will go away, we hope. but right now we're looking at a red flag warning until 8 a.m. tuesday. for much of the northern sacramento valley, and that includes solano county, the carquinez strait and the de nty. and u 8 a.m.
