>> words of encouragement. today from melinda french gates during stanford's commencement address. but hundreds of students didn't get her message. abc seven news starts now. >> from abc seven live. >> breaking news and that breaking news out of the north bay, this wildfire in sonoma county is a big concern right now due to really strong gusts, the flames have rapidly spread, fanned by the winds. this fire burning right now in healdsburg, and it started around 1230 today. and is 15% contained. flames have charred 150 acres. and let's get a better idea now of where that fire is burning. cal fire has named it the point fire. you see, it's burning at stewarts point, skaggs springs road, east of geyserville. and thank you for joining us. right now, i'm zach fuentes, before that fire ignited, crews in the north bay were on alert and the weather of course, is why abc7 news reporter cornell bernard spent the day with fire crews in the north bay with a look at how they're prepped for the fire's

red flag warning, now in effect for parts of the area. and cornell, there's a lot going on today. first, what can you tell us about that point? wildfire >> zach, i have to tell you, those red flag conditions, certainly getting the attention of firefighters all over the bay area, especially, like you said, up in the north bay, up in the sonoma county area where they are fighting the point fire at this hour. in fact, whereare here in american canyon, you can actually see the smoke that fire about 60 miles from where we are . that's where crews are battling the point. the point fire near lake sonoma. it's burned, like you said, 150 acres, 15% contained. cal fire says this is a mostly rural area, but evacuations have been ordered at this hour in the area of northwest healdsburg, west dry creek road, north of stang road to fall creek road. very windy right now, and that's been a very big concern to firefighters and homeowners all across the north bay.

>> this vegetation fire was burning sunday afternoon, sending up a lot of smoke in sonoma county near geyserville. >> cal fire dispatching these santa rosa based firefighting aircraft to the so-called point fire, which startedts in skaggsprin ray some evuationf lake sonoma. strong, gusty winds andow relative humidities are the two primary reasons that the red flag warning was called. >> this red flag conditions have cal fire oalert, i fire stations are fully staffed, and th sky crane chopper just arrived for the season at t santa ro air base. it's capable of dropping600 gallons of water on a fire all acrossli. >> we've had a lot more fire activity, so we have the resources that we need to sta attackg these fire and we're rey to go. >> firefhters say this wind driven grass fire was sparked sunday morning off highway 680 in martinez. firefighters stopped it at about one acre. the battalion chief expects his

crews to be very busy over the next 24 hours. >> this is what we prepare for. we train for this, but on days like this, we want to make extra sure that they're hydrated in the morning. they're expecting this sort of activity. >> neighbors living near open space say they have learned from the past. they know when humidity levels drop and winds pick up. they need to be on alert. neighbor gloria cabezas says she received an alert about the red flag conditions on her phone. >> when it gets windy, you know there's a little you know, we start, you know, try to come out and start watering our lawn. just you know, making sure, you know, we're trying to keep as safe as possible. all >> back live with a shot of that smoke which is drifting over san pablo bay right now and much of the napa valley. i just spoke with cal fire public information information officer jason clay a short time ago. he says winds, of course, are the biggest enemy right now in fighting the point fire in sonoma couy. and once again, mandatory evacuations have been issued for west dry creek road to fall creek road.

this is northwest of healdsburg. the sonoma county sheriff's department says if you live in this area,ou need to leave now. we're live in american canyon, cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> important information there. cornell. thank you so much. and taking a live look outside from our mount tamalpais camera in marin county. conditions there wi now and abc seven tellus ty're onlg tcerti get worse. spencer. >> zach. that's true. going into the early evening hours of wind gusts are going to intensify. and what cornell reported there is absolutely correct about the importancef th gusts, those winds, as they travel down slope over the hills and mountains, they dry out the air, thus dropping the relative humidity to dangerously low levels. combine that with the strong gusty wind and of course you have high fire danger. so right now we're looking at the red flag warning that's in effect until 8 a.m. tuesday. for much of northern california, the northern sacramento valley, the carquinestrand the d over into parts ofake coun, lakeport, and even in northern napa and sonoma co.flag warningisn effect until.

currently up to 35mph at sfo it was to about 40. just a few minutes ago. but you can see numerous locatight with gusts between 25 and 3ph. they m get evenher going into the early evening hours. so as we look at the fire danger index for the bay area, notice right now, most locations here are in the blue and yellow colors, indicating moderate to high concerns for fire or moderate to high danger. a few little areas of orange in there indicating high or very high fire danger going into the nighttime and overnight hours will be mainly blue and green, low to moderate fire risk. but as we get into the afternoon hours tomorrow and the evening, we'll see those yellows and orangepanding once again. i'll have a lat the full accuweather seven day forecast in just a few minutes. zach >> spencer. thank you. now another effort to help prevent

wildfires will launch tomorrow and tuesday. p-g-and-e's says it will conduct inspections of power lines with helicopters and drones in parts of santa clara and santa cruz counties. p-g-and-e's says it's in preparation for any potential public safety power shut off or psps events. that's, of course, when utility issues a planned outage during extreme weather that could cause trees to fall into power lines, and to southern california. now, crews are battling a wildfire that's triggered evacuation orders in los angeles county. the post fire was reported around two yesterday afternoon in gorman, south of the grapevine. the area is under a red flag warning today, with winds expected to increase from nine tonight to midnight. more than 1200 people were forced to evacuate last night. flames have burned more than 12,000 acres. >> the winds are probably going to be the biggest factor i battling this blaze. we're going to have gusts as high as 60mph, but that woulda nstantmostly we're g to aaverage of about 24 mile

walkout shortly after the ceremony began. it was to protest the university's respse to pro-palestinian student demands over the gaza conflict between israel and hamas. student protests over the past few months have included two encampments, and the occupation of the office of the school's president. well, whether it was an outdoor graduation or just heading outside for father's day, we really did have some nice weather. we did indeed. >> wefire c of course, but it's just beautiful out th so to the extent that we can, let's enjoy this. here's a look at what's going on. i'll show you the satellite radar composite image. we've got this brisk, robust onshore flow. and that's part of the problem with the fire concerns because it's generating really impressive wind gusts up to 35mph. right now at sfo, we've seen some higher ones this afternoon as well. and over 30 mile p hour gusts and many other locations around the bay area. so it's going to be a windy evening. much of the night will be windy as well. 24 hour temperature changes. not a big deal right now. only 1 or 2 degrees difference in one direction or the other. from this time yesterday. so here's a view from

mount tam looking down onto the bay and onto san francisco, where it's 65 degrees right now. we have oakland and hayward in the low 70s, 78 at san jose, redwood city, 7459 at half moon bay, bright and breezy at the golden gate of the temperature readings right now 72 at petaluma, but mid 80s at santa rosa. low to mid 80s at napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. so on we go to our forecast headlines. next two days we'll have increased fire dang. so bear that in mind and be careful with any outdoor activity or any kind of activity that could spark fire. the main factors here in this fire concern are the gusty wind and the dangerously low humidity. we've got relative humidity readings right now lower than 20. and that's of course not a good thing. middle of the week though, the wind will ease. we'll have a milder weather pattern and the fire concerns will go away, we hope. but right now we're looking at a red flag warning until 8 a.m. tuesday. for much of the northern sacramento valley, and that includes solano county, the carquinez strait and the de nty. and u 8 a.m.

tomorrow, this wind wind advisory, a wind advisory with this red flag warning is in effect for portions of the higher elevations of northern napa and sonoma counties. so we have to keep our eyes on that as wellre dgeinde rig now ows muchf thbay area in yellow and orange up in the north bay and the eas bay, indicating high to very high fire concern. here the areas in blue excuse me are areas wi moderate firern. youl see the fire concernnd the index rating going down as we get into the night and nighttime and overnight hours. it must be the allergies, as the winds diminish and the relative humidity increases, of course, the fire danger will decrease. but as we get into the afternoon and evening hours tomorrow, we'll see more yellows and orange once again with higher fire danger. overnight, e wind will mix out the clouds so it will be a clear overnight period and a sunny start to the day tomorrow. overnight lows will be mainly in the low to mid 50s, and highs tomorrow will range from about 60 to 62 at the coast
