>> and brooke shields is special shoes. highlights from broadway's biggest night, the tony awards, and later, one man's trash, another's treasure. >> the coins that were thrown out now worth millions from abc news this is america this morning. >> good monday morning everyone i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to you i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with the extreme heat bearing down on much of the country, some parts of the northeast where many homes don't even have ac, could see temperatures near 100 this week. >> the heat and dry conditions are already fueling big concerns in the west in the form of wildfires. this morning, the race is on to stop multiple wildfires in southern california. one fire north of los angeles burning more than 14,000 acres. more than 1200 people evacuated. >> the winds are probably going to be the biggest factor in battling this blaze. it's going to make the effort much more difficult. >> oh my god, this auto repair shop and dozens of vehicles

destroyed just off the five freeway to show you how quick this fire came through. >> workers at the shop said this fire came through and burned down these cars in just mere minutes. >> this camera capturing how quickly the fire spread that small plume growing into a sea of smoke in just a few hours, winds expected to hit 70mph overnight carried embers three quarters of a mile. firefighters to the west managed to stop the progress of another fire near lancaster, which burned at least one building not far from dozens of homes. but in northern california, reports of buildings destroyed by a fire in sonoma county. experts warn this could be an especially dangerous fire season, due in part to climate change, which brought rainy winters that caused vegetation to grow. now in the heat and dry conditions. that vegetation is fuel for fires. meanwhile, heat typically only seen in the depths of summer, is bearing down on the midwest and northeast. more than 260 million americans will experience temperatures above 90 this week. parts of the northeast will see temperatures in the mid and upper 90s. pittsburgh could hit

99 degrees wednesday, which would be its highest june temperature on record. extreme heat is the most dangerous form of extreme weather, causing an estimated 1200 deaths in the u.s. each year. and now there's concern that number will only grow as northern cities unaccustomed to such extremes, face this heat so early in the season. when it comes to climate change, each of the last 12 months, the global temperature has hit a record high for that month. we'll check today's forecast in just a few moments. >> we are learning more about the mass shooting at a splash pad near detroit that left nine people injured, among them a mother and two sons, one of them shot in the head. police say the gunman suffered from mental health challenges and died by suicide. after the attack, gofundme took down a fundraising page that claimed it was for a victim's family. the money pledged has been refunded and police near austin, texas, are searching for a suspect who opened fire at a juneteenth celebration, killing two people and wounding 14 others. the wounded victims are as young as

ten years old, just ten days to go before president biden and former president trump square off in their first debate of this campaign, both men were busy at campaign events this weekend. >> biden criticizing the supreme court during a fundraiser with former president obama. while trump took aim at biden's border policies. abc's em nguyen has the details. em. good morning, andrew. >> good morning. president biden attended a star studded fundraiser in los angeles this weekend where his warning about the supreme court got a lot of attention this morning. connecticut senator chris murphy is coming to president biden's defense after biden issued a blunt criticism of the supreme court. >> i think it would be irresponsible for the president not to talk about the fact that this court is becoming brazenly corrupt and brazenly political. >> biden, joined by former president obama, told supporters at a fundraiser in la that november's election will have major consequences for the

supreme court predicting the next president will likely nominate two justices. >> i think it is one of the scariest parts of it. look, the supreme court has never been as out of kilter as it is today, i mean, never. >> the biden campaign is planning multiple events for the end of this month to mark the second anniversary of the supreme court decision to overturn roe v wade, which ended the federal right to an abortion. former president trump selected three conservative justices during his presidency who were crucial in the decision. trump held events in michigan over the weekend hoping to turn that state red. >> we've done more for and i say this. i say it proudly more for the black population than any president since abraham lincoln. >> speaking in detroit, trump slammed biden's policies at the southern border, blaming immigrants for stealing jobs. >> the people coming over the border, all those millions of people they're inflicting tremendous harm to our black

population and to our hispanic population. >> the head of the house intelligence committee, congressman mike turner, is now demanding president biden declassify information on certain terror threats after eight people with suspected ties to isis were arrested in the u.s. last week. each of the eight suspects had crossed into the u.s. at the southern border. >> this was noble and expected as a result of the biden administration's policy of an open southern border. and we are seeing it absolutely across the country. >> as for the big debate, biden and trump will face off next thursday, june 27th. the campaigns have agreed there will be no audience, and unless a candidate is speaking their microphone will be turned off in hopes of avoiding the chaos of previous debates. shannon. >> all right, amwin, thank you for that. from washington today in maryland, the governor is announcing a mass pardon for more than 175,000 marijuana convictions. it will apply to anyone convicted in the state of misdemeanor marijuana possession

charges. the governor says it's a step toward healing social and economic injustice overseas. >> the israeli military is warning that increased attacks from hezbollah on northern israel could trigger a serious escalation. last week, hezbollah launched the largest series of rockets and drones from lebanon since the war in gaza began. meanwhile prime minister benjamin netanyahu is blasting a plan by the israeli military to pause daytime fighting along a key route in gaza to allow more humanitarian aid to be delivered. netanyahu calls the pause unacceptable. >> now to an abc news exclusive. keith papini, the ex-husband of sherri papini, the california mother who faked her own abduction, is speaking about the hoax for the first time since her arrest. >> she made us all believe that her story was true. every single day she committed to the lie. >> keith papini, the husband at the center of a kidnaping hoax that captivated the country, is now breaking his silence,

revealing new details to good morning america about how his wife sherri, faked her own disappearance in 2016, lying to authorities by claiming she'd been kidnaped by two hispanic women when in fact she had been staying with her ex-boyfriend. >> i wanted to get the truth out there and really wanted to let everybody know, like how convinced sherri was all those years the california mother of two vanished after going for a jog, leading to a frantic 22 day search before she reappeared on thanksgiving day, shackled and chains, bruised and branded. >> she was telling other people that you were abusive. she told friends that you'd kill her if she ever left you. are those allegations true? >> oh, of course not. those, those allegations hurt their painful. >> did you ever physically or mentally abuse her? >> never. police spent four years searching for sherri supposed captors before dna

sick? >> keith papini this morning on gma dash cam video shows the moments before this plane crashed along interstate 25 south of denver. >> two people were hurt as the plane clipped a road sign. both were rescued though from waist deep water near the highway. >> the man accused of killing a maryland mother of five on a popular hiking trail has been captured. police are revealing how they tracked down the suspect after ten months. here's abc's alison kosik, nearly one

year after rachel moran, a mother of five, was dragged from a hiking trail in maryland, raped and murdered, an arrest in the case, something rachel's mother thought would never happen. >> i'm very thankful and just very grateful. >> since rachel's body was found in august of 2023, investigators say they've searched the country for her killer with a sketch of the suspect and dna evidence from the crime scene. they say their first break came when they matched the dna to evidence from a home invasion case on the other side of the country, in los angeles. in that case, a nine year old and her mother were brutally attacked. police say doorbell video showed the suspect. >> after we had the video, we knew what he looked like, but we didn't know who he was. with the new dna evidence. now we know who he is, but we still didn't know where he was. >> investigators say they were

able to track the suspect, 23 year old victor antonio martinez hernandez, to tulsa, oklahoma. they say the suspect with ties to the notorious ms. 13 gang, entered the country illegally in february last year. >> this monster fled to the united states illegally after committing the brutal murder of a young woman in el salvador, a month early in january of 2023. the sheriff had strong words for lawmakers in washington down to 1600 pennsylvania avenue and to every member in both chambers of congress, 1800 miles from the southern border. and this is the second woman in our county to be killed by an illegal alien, just one month before he entered the us. >> last year, interpol issued a warrant for hernandez for that murder in el salvador. as for the rachel moran case, the sheriff says it appears the suspect acted alone. he now faces extradition to maryland.
