their first debate of the 2024 campaign, now just ten days away. good morning. it is monday, june 17th. >> start the check of our forecast with lisa. >> all right. well, we've got a spare the air day today due to the smoke from the fire there. and as we look at live doppler seven, you'll notice we're under clear skies. want to get you up to date on the weather here up near the fire. and you'll notice that temperatures are in the 50s. relative humidity not too bad at 62. and the winds right now are calm. but we do have concerns for the smoke throughout the day. so there's a look at the fire. you've heard about the north winds. and as we go through the afternoon, notice how the smoke drifts down to the south and you can see the haze that will encompass much of marin county. and then it gets caught up in the flow and the rest of the peninsula, and a little bit hazy into the east bay. but overall, we will be watching the winds today and tomorrow as we have that red flag warning for the interior north bay mountains through tonight and then through sacramento on tuesday night. so we are looking at the dry

offshore winds the next couple of days. it is 49 in santa rosa, 53 in hayward. and right now the winds are calm. but we certainly are looking at that to change as they ramp up throughout the afternoon. so although we're going to have sunny skies, we're talking about the hazy conditions, the spare, the air alert and those offshore winds that will stick around for the next couple of days. so good morning lisa. >> good morning everyone. and yes, we do have the winds on the san mateo bridge. chp has issued a high wind warning for the span. it's moving pretty well as you go from east hayward over to west the san mateo side of things. no stalls or accidents there. and you can see the beautiful sunrise over the golden gate bridge looking north . and no delays coming south out of marin county. and once again, we did have that high wind warning over the altamont pass. we'll take a look at that slow traffic coming up and over for about a 45 minute drive headed from tracy into dublin pleasanton. >> sue, thank you. as you wake up this morning, i want to get you updated on the situation

happening right now in the north bay. crews have been working all night to gain control of the point fire in sonoma county. it has already burned more than 1000 acres since it started yesterday. it's burning on the south side of lake sonoma, west of geyserville. it started right along stewarts point, skaggs springs. the east, burning toward healdsburg. and that is the real concern this morning, firefighters spent hours defending vineyards and homes along dry creek road. containment only up to 15% people across the bay area noticing the smoke from this fire, satellite images show that smoke plume spreading down into the east bay. you could check out the view from this alaska airlines flight. you see that thick layer of smoke that is the fire we're talking about. abc7 news reporter lena howland is making her way to the fire zone this morning. lena, fire crews were hoping for better conditions overnight tonight. >> yeah, reggie that's right. we are in the petaluma area on our way to that fire right now where

crews really have been working through the night to gain an upper hand on this fire. now, cal fire crews said that they were hoping to fight the fire by air by using three different helicopters overnight. new video from overnight shows flames fanned across dry creek road and mountain view ranch road. this was taken just before 11:00 last night. cal fire says through the night they had 36 engines on the fire with seven dozers, six hand crews and three water tenders. yesterday they dangerous flames forced many families in this area to evacuate from their homes. azul lopez of santa rosa, along with her parents and little brother, were celebrating father's day on lake sonoma on jet skis when they got an urgent message from the sheriff's department. >> well, it was really scary because we were having a good time and then i don't know where we see all the smoke. and then it started to get in the wind. it was like really bad. >> it was very dense and very black and so we watched it

really the fire really form and accelerate over this mountain range right here. >> overnight crews also captured this scary helicopter rescue. we saw someone being airlifted off the mountain view ranch road area right around 1230 last night. no word yet on their condition this morning. now, fire crews were also hoping that the cooler weather and tamer winds overnight and here in the early morning hours would help them diminish some of the fire threat. live in live in the petaluma area and lena howland abc seven news. >> thank you. lena, an evacuation site has been open all night for people who've been forced to leave their homes. it's located at el molino high school in forestville, now people can't stay there, but the county and the red cross are on site helping people with resources. the site opened shortly after the evacuations were ordered. county officials say the area being evacuated

evacuated has about 400 residents in it. the fire is still spreading. the county says everyone needs to be ready in case more places need to be evacuated. >> this is just a temporary evacuation point, so where people first are sent and from there they can, you know, charge up cell phones, get some some water and refreshments and be referred to other places to go for shelter. >> currently, this is not threatening any high population area, but it's definitely something where getting those individuals out allows the firefighters to get in and do structure control, which is what they're doing right now. >> if needed, another site could be opened in petaluma. we are keeping a close eye on the point fire and other dangerous weather conditions. when news breaks, we will let you know. just download the abc seven news bay area app and enable push alerts to get notifications sent to your mobile device. >> developing news in southern california. crews are battling a wildfire that's triggered evacuation orders in los angeles county. the post fire started in

gorman, south of the grapevine, yesterday afternoon. flames have burned through more than 14,000 acres with 2% containment. the area is under a red flag warning and winds were expected to increase overnight. >> the winds are probably going to be the biggest factor in battling this blaze. we're going to have gusts as high as 60mph, but that would not be a constant. mostly we're going to say an average of about 24 mile per hour winds. >> the fire forced more than 1200 people to evacuate over the weekend. the cause of the fire still under investigation. >> closing arguments are set to begin today in the state trial of david depape. he's already been sentenced to federal prison for the 2022 attack on paul pelosi, the pabst defense team rested their case friday. the judge is expected to share jury instructions ahead of closing arguments. also this week, san francisco leaders will be discussing a new agreement to provide security outside the pelosi home. sfpd officers will be there 24 over seven. whether

or not speaker emerita nancy pelosi is home, city council documents show federal government, the federal government will be paying the city $1 million for this service . >> this morning, we're just ten days away from the first debate of the 2024 presidential race. both president biden and former president donald trump are on the campaign trail. over the weekend, the future of the supreme court, a big topic for each of them. here's abc news reporter anne nguyen. >> good morning. president biden attended a star studded fundraiser in los angeles this weekend, where his warning about the supreme court got a lot of attention this morning, a stark warning from president joe biden reverberating after a fundraiser with former president obama in l.a. predicting the next president will likely nominate two new justices to the supreme court. biden has pointed to the overturning of roe v wade and the controversies revolving around conservative justices clarence thomas and samuel alito, the former president

trump has touted appointing three conservative justices to the high court during his time in office. trump holding events in michigan, a swing state he won in 2016, and biden narrowly carried in 2020. the former president claimed that he's been the best president for african americans. the biden campaign immediately slammed trump, citing skyrocketing black unemployment and uninsured rates during trump's time in the white house. as for the big debate, biden and trump will face off next thursday, june 27th. the campaigns have agreed there will be no audience, and unless a candidate is speaking their microphone will be turned off in hopes of avoiding the chaos of previous debates. and when abc news washington. >> all right. happy monday to you. we have had a wind shift since friday. so the atmosphere is continue to dry out throughout the day on friday over the weekend. and here we are on monday with the spare, the air alert and a fire to contend with to the north of us.

it's all due to the system that is dropping to the south that has allowed for the wind shift, and it will influence our weather for today and into tuesday as well. the winds so as we look at the air quality, it's good right now. here's a look at the smoke aloft. and you'll notice that those north winds pushing the smoke to the south. and as we get through the evening hours this is the afternoon 4:00. you'll notice that it pushes some of it offshore. but much of marin county, the peninsula and even parts of the east bay, looking at that air quality that is compromised due to the smoke. so this is the situation right now through tuesday. and then by wednesday, early wednesday morning, we get a return to that onshore flow winds. not too much of a factor right now at the surface, but upper elevations anywhere from 20 to 30 miles an hour. and as we look at our fire danger index, it really blossoms as we get through the afternoon from very high to moderate. and that's due to those offshore winds, the low relative humidity. this is into tuesday. so we'll have to contend with this again throughout the afternoon. so starting out throughout the morning hours of the higher relative humidity

then to about 20% noontime. and as we get to 4:00 we are in the single digits. and that's why the north bay, specifically napa county, looking at that red flag warning through the evening hours, there's a look at the gusty winds today. we get into it again for your tuesday and then we'll be looking at that marine layer coming back into place. so temperatures not too bad today 60s at the coast. we'll see some 80s inland and looking forward to the return to that onshore flow overnight on tuesday. >> lisa thank you. shifting sands a sure sign that summer is just about here. coming up, the yearly chore starting today at ocean beach in san francisco, a new video of a smash and grab involving 20 thieves in sunnyvale. >> we see the moment an employee came face to face with this group. >> you are graduating into a broken world, but it is community that rebuilds things. >> an inspiring message during stanford's commencement. but some graduatg students wanted to send a message of their

the point fire has burned more than a thousand acres in sonoma county outside of healdsburg. at last check, it's still 15% contained. sonoma county is canceling summer school classes in healdsburg today because of the evacuation power outages, and smoke from the fire also causing trouble. no word yet on how this all started. >> a heroic saved by contra costa county paramedics over the weekend look at this. they were called to a truck that crashed into a tree early yesterday morning. this was on sunset road near sellers avenue in brentwood . >> the vehicle, began, caught fire and they were able to remove the driver from the driver's seat and get him to their gurney, which they rolled right into cpr because he was in cardiac arrest. oh that driver was taken to a local hospital to be treated. >> their condition is not known. the cause of the crash is still being investigated.

>> this morning we're seeing scary video of the moment a group of 20 robbers broke into a sunnyvale jewelry store. this happened last wednesday at png jewelers on el camino real. you see the group here storm in after shattering the glass doors . look how many of them there are. one of the thieves confronts an employee at the bottom left of your screen. police chase two vehicles they believed to be involved. five people were eventually caught, and this is video released last week showing the robbers in the act violently smashing nearly every display case in 2.5 minutes. no word yet on the total value of the stolen items. some of that stolen jewelry has been recovered. >> now to an update to a story we've been following. the texting scandal being investigated within the antioch police department. we've now learned 13 officers linked to racist text messages have lost their jobs. our media partner, the mercury news, reports. that includes seven recent firings over the scandal. city officials

tried to fire or discipline several other officers, but the report says those officers won arbitration hearings and had the decisions either reversed or reduced. an fbi investigation uncovered racist texts being sent between antioch police officers, including the arresting officers, and a 2021 drive by shooting and murder. >> a heads up for east bay drivers. ac transit is now using new tech to detect drivers who have illegally parked in bus only lanes. the system is being used on busses that run along the tempo corridor between the san leandro transit center and uptown oakland. when this system detects a car parked illegally, a camera captures a video and photo of the vehicle along with the license plate. a law enforcement officer then reviews the evidence and issues a ticket and the fine. it's $110. a live look now at sfo this morning. today, the airport celebrates the opening of the fully completed harvey milk terminal. one mayor london breed, will be at the ribbon cutting for the final section of this facility.

it honors the legacy of milk, a beloved gay rights leader, and the completion of a $2.5 billion development. the showing off some new additions, including two gates, a ticket counter area and upper level security checkpoint, and a museum gallery . >> a state appeals court says ucsf can continue with a huge hospital remodel on the university's parnassus heights campus. neighbors are fighting this project, claiming that it violates city heights and zoning restrictions. but just last week, a judge ruled the university is exempt from those restrictions as a government educational institution. in this, $4.3 billion project is set to be done in 2030. it will replace a smaller hospital at the site above the inner sunset neighborhood. >> if you're heading out to ocean beach in san francisco, you may notice some big equipment. starting today, city crews will begin their annual sand relocation project over the next two weeks, crews will move about 30,000yd■!t of sand. this work is needed to keep the great highway from being covered up.

primarily impacted throughout the morning hours. and then by the second half of the day, those north winds really transporting that smoke and haze throughout the peninsula a little bit in the east bay. and then we'll continue to watch those north winds throughout the overnight hours, ease up a bit, and then this should allow for less smoke overnight. but then we get back into it on tuesday with more offshore winds. so monday night north bay interior valleys. this is as far as the red flag warning goes. but the northern sacramento valley through tuesday. pretty picture here outside with the clear sky and temperatures ranging from about 50 at the coast, 51 in san francisco, we are 56. in hayward, 57 san jose and nice and glassy and calm here, looking out over the city, 49 santa rosa, napa, 58, in concord, current wind check at the surface. we're a little breezy. san francisco up to 24 miles an hour. upper elevations. it's windier from mount tam, 26 mile an hour. wind gusts 31 miles an hour, mount diablo and

relative humidity. there has been quite low in the upper elevation, so spare the air the alert. today the main weather factor is gusty winds, low humidity through tuesday and then by the middle of the week, early wednesday morning, we'll get back into an onshore flow throughout the day. today, those winds up to 25 and perhaps 30 miles an hour. take a look at livermore. the next several days we cool off into the middle of the week, but we are talking a lot of heat coming our way. the end of the week, not only for livermore. we're talking about the entire bay area, so prepare for increase heat by the time summer arrives thursday into friday, upper 70s today in oakland, 87 santa rosa and the accuweather seven day forecast. we are mild today. a little bump up tomorrow and then juneteenth looks a little quieter in terms of cooler numbers, and then a lot of hot weather headed our way. end of the week into the weekend. >> thanks, lisa. coming up, the seven things to know this morning

north bay, it will be turning poor as we get into that smoke drifting to the south from the fire in healdsburg, also in our inland east bay, looking at the poor air quality as we get into your tuesday forecast, we're still under the influence of an offshore flow. so moderate air quality inland and in the north bay, the rest of the bay area looking at better air quality. so once our winds shift shift to an onshore component overnight on tuesday, we'll get into the better air quality, higher relative humidity and hopefully a better handle on that fire. 49 santa rosa. it is 52. in vallejo right now, so the winds breezy about 20 miles an hour san francisco. otherwise they'll continue to increase throughout the day. here's a look at the clear sky the upper 70s, the mid 80s today inland in those gusty winds returning at times, especially along the coast. good morning sue. >> good morning lisa and we'll check on your bay bridge commute . as you can see no metering lights yet. a lot of volume though. a lot of cars funneling through onto the span. it's moving as you can see, a lot of

evacuate as the afternoon shifted. >> we really transitioned from attacking on the fire into a structure defense mode so that fire is really driving down south. it's kind of gone over a point in the area. it's gone over bradford mountain went downslope off of that and it's been moving south kind of into the valley. there >> all of our neighbors on west dry creek have been evacuated and it's heartbreaking. >> overnight crews also captured this scary helicopter rescue, according to the press democrat, a 25 year old inmate firefighter was hit by a tree branch and suffered a gash in his neck. he had to be airlifted out. they say he was last reported to be alert and conscious. evacuation orders are still in effect at this hour. this morning we are expecting to get updated containment numbers and acreage numbers from cal fire officials and in a news briefing this morning, happening at 7:00 live in santa rosa. lena howland abc

seven news. >> lena. thank you. an evacuation site has been open all night for people forced to leave their homes. it's located at el molino high school in forestville. people can't stay there, but the county and red cross are on site helping people with resources. the site opened shortly after the evacuations were ordered. county officials say the area being evacuated has about 400 residents. the fire is still spreading and the county says everyone needs to be ready in case more places need to be evacuated. >> this is just a temporary evacuation point, so where people first are sent and from there they can, you know, charge up cell phones, get some some water and refreshment and be referred to other places to go for shelter. >> currently, this is not threatening any high population area, but it's definitely something where getting those individuals out allows the firefighters to get in and do structure control, which is what they're doing right now. >> if needed, another site could be open in petaluma, cal fire

stations are fully staffed for these red flag conditions. >> a sky crane chopper just arrived for the season to the santa rosa air base. it's capable of dropping 2600 gallons of water at a time. >> all across california, we've had a lot more fire activity, so we have the resources that we need to start attacking these fires and we're ready to go. >> this grass fire kicked up yesterday in martinez, driven by wind off of highway 680, and crews were able to stop it at just one acre. the battalion chief there expects his crews to be busy throughout the day. fire season is off to a fast and furious start in the bay area. here's a look at the picture. statewide, this is cal fire's map of fires so far this year. the gray icons you see there, those are fires that are out. cal fire says it has responded to more than 1700 fires so far, with more than 41,000 acres burned, which is about 64mi■!s,n area bigger than san francisco. >> today, p-g-and-e's is launching a round of inspections to prevent wildfires. the

dumbarton coming through the toll plazas headed fortunately in the non commute direction that's been cleared out of lanes . >> thank you sue. new developments over the weekend in the war between israel and hamas. israeli military has announced a daily pause in fighting along this route. you see here in southern gaza near the town of rafah. this will allow a backlog of desperately needed humanitarian aid to flow from the border in this crisis. now, this comes as both israel and hamas consider the latest proposal for a complete cease fire outlined by president biden . >> we've been following protests at uc santa cruz for more than a month now, ranging from a pro-palestinian encampment that ended in dozens of arrests to a worker strike. now, a tense school year is at an end, with some university leaders actually skipping commencement. the chancellor of uc santa cruz and other executives did not attend this weekend's graduation ceremonies, saying they were targeted for, quote, disruption.

university leaders said they didn't want graduates to be overshadowed by protests. >> they didn't want to distract from the celebratory nature. but the only reason they would have distracted from the celebratory nature is because of their complete disregard for students, and the fact that that disregard for students has created such a kind of negative feelings between the students towards admin. >> commencement events at uc santa cruz did still happen over the weekend. stanford university held its 133rd annual commencement. more than 5400 students received their degrees yesterday morning. philanthropist and stanford parent melinda french gates gave the commencement address. she urged the class of 2024 to think beyond their graduation. >> and i've learned that the next day is when the real work begins, because what we do the next day is what makes us who we are.

>> hundreds of students staged a walkout shortly after the ceremony began. it was to protest the university's response to pro-palestinian student demands over the conflict between israel and hamas. student protests over the past few months have included two encampments, and the occupation of the office of the school's president. >> budget cuts across san francisco school district could mean the end of programs in classes. still ahead, the courses many in the city's aapi, aapi community are demanding stay available in the curriculum. but first, here's lisa with a look at the forecast. >> all right. good morning to you. monday morning here downtown we have nice clear sky. but our forecast headlines tell a different story a spare the air alert today. we've got that fire burning up in healdsburg. red flag warning through 8:00 tonight for our north bay interior mountains. and that's going to provide a more smoke in the atmosphere, especially up in marin sonoma. and it will be drifting down to the south. the winds will ease through the overnight hours. but here's a look at that fire and where the

smoke will be blowing through. about noon time. notice that northeasterly component allowing to push the smoke offshore but also drifting it southward throughout the day. this is throughout the evening hours. and then tonight pushing on to the peninsula through san francisco. and then with those winds easing up into tuesday, we'll look for this sort of a repeat performance. and that smoke drifting about the north bay. so throughout the day today , look at the relative humidity drop from 20% to 14% in concord. and in antioch, the single digits for napa. there san ramon and livermore. so we are certainly watching these winds, which will gust anywhere from 35 miles an hour along the coast near 30 inside the bay, and then through the overnight hours. they ease up a bit, but they're back again offshore for your tuesday. and here's a look at what happens on thursday, the first day of summer. temperatures look comfortable right in the mid 80s inland, but by friday the heat is on the 90s returning and then looking at

they were ready to conduct high angle rope rescues if they had to. oh, i wasn't ready for her. one person with a preexisting medical condition was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. everyone else walked away unharmed. for a second, i thought that that was anxiety from inside out too. but it was just a woman on the ferris wheel. >> okay, well, i have anxiety. >> just one. but did you see her? you missed her, didn't you? she popped in like this and she went back. they're fine. our carjacking suspect in the hospital this morning after a fremont police officer shot him. police say the officer was responding to a carjacking call yesterday in osgood road. they say they spotted the suspect armed with a knife a short distance away on auto mall parkway. details of what happened next are vague, but police say it ended with the officer firing his gun. >> the confrontation with the suspect occurred on the overpass on ottumwa. i won't say that it's uncommon, but it's not something that we deal with every day. but as you mentioned, it is a crime that is becoming

>> the little kids too, though. >> yeah. there were little kids. yeah. yeah, they're into it. >> that's great. i can't wait to see it. i wish i had better news on the weather front, but we are looking at a pretty start to your monday. finally, the system is going to exit the bay area into the next 24 hours. it's the one that is dropping to the south there. it's going to move into the great basin, and that will allow for a wind shift back to an onshore flow, but not until wednesday morning. so a red flag warning the northern sacramento valley. this is through tuesday night in the interior mountains of the north bay is through monday night. and so we're watching the fire here, where right now it's 54 degrees. the winds are calm and that relative humidity is at 63. it should be much higher than that this time of day. and then with the winds throughout the day gusting to over 25, 30 miles an hour, we're expecting that relative humidity to drop off into the teens. and single digits. so our fire danger index comes in handy here, where we get the colors that indicate the very high to high index throughout the afternoon, with those offshore winds blowing.
