in the north bay right now as firefighters battle to get it under control. >> and you're looking at live pictures from sky seven of the point fire. this is it burning in sonoma county. it started sunday afternoon and hundreds have now been evacuated. good afternoon. i'm kristen sze and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. the point fire is burning in sonoma county. it's on the south side of lake sonoma, west of geyserville. and since it started yesterday, the fire has really exploded to the east, burning toward healdsburg. >> that's right. nearly 1200 acres have burned. containment is at 20. evacuation orders are in effect, forcing more than 400 people out of their homes. >> and there is an evacuation site with resources available for people forced to leave their homes. it's located in el molino at el molino high school in forestville. >> we have team coverage on the fires. spencer christian has the latest forecast, and abc seven news reporter ryan curry and cornell bernard are live in sonoma county. all of that coming. >> but first, we'll begin with cornell live in healdsburg with

an update on the fire and the homeowners. cornell >> yeah. dan and christine uh, firefighters continuing to do battle on this fire on the ridge as you can see here above the dry creek valley in healdsburg, uh- we have seen a lot of smoke coming up from this area. uh- spot fires from where this fire moved through ever so fast last night. good news. winds have definitely calmed down from yesterday. the fire coming all too close to homes and vineyards . many locals are breathing a sigh of relief, at least for now . very scary mel harold watched the point fire quickly size sunday, driven by strong winds, the fire burned across raymond burr vineyards, where he works. his caretaker, mel, was ordered to evacuate but declined. the fire destroyed a livestock enclosure, but firefighters stopped it from taking the main house and tasting room. >> i'm still in shock that it

it, it actually devastated the property as much as it did, but i am just so grateful that we didn't lose anything else >> other structures were lost in the fast moving wildfire along dry creek road. sky seven shows where the point fire appears to have destroyed buildings on ranch properties. >> pretty familiar with the fires, that's for sure. just not familiar with june fires. you know this isn't normal. >> jeff cowell says the wildfire triggering memories of two nightmares. >> lost my house in the tubbs fire, then my house out. millcreek. that house burned. so kind of crazy. cal fire says 400 firefighters are on the ground and in the air working to stop this fire. >> for now, the elements on their side winds are not as fierce as they were sunday. >> we're going to take today as it is. we're trying to get in a lot of good work right now, get some good attack on that fire

and keep all of our firefighters safe and the public safe. >> it came so close, but it didn't happen. >> kathy and john clendennen were out of town when they got a chilling call from their son. >> he said, be prepared. we're probably going to lose the house. be prepared. >> their son ross taking these pictures of the fire marching toward the family home in the dry creek valley. but firefighters were able to run defense on the flames only yards away. >> they had a real serious attack, but the wind was horrendous and the fire spread and split at rates not normally seen. >> their son removed valuables from the house. thanks to this list, kathy and john have posted near their front door in case of fire. luckily, all valuables are back inside and this family is beyond grateful to firefighters. >> today actually is my birthday and so i said all i really want is to have my house. and so i got my present. >> well, happy birthday to kathy uh- cal fire. just doing a water drop on a puff of smoke that we

saw here just a few minutes ago, those firefighter chopper firefighting choppers working well into the night to stop this fire, cal fire says structures have been lost. how many? they do not know. assessments are still being made. a firefighter was injured up on the ridge overnight. they were choppered off the mountain to a local hospital. their condition unknown. the cause of this fire remains unknown. still under investigation but live in healdsburg. cornell. bernard abc seven news. all right. >> cornell. thanks. now, smoke from the fire has prompted a spare the air alert. >> abc seven news reporter ryan curry is live in windsor. with that part of the story, ryan. >> yeah. dan. christine. good afternoon. the air quality here in windsor just dipped below 60 moments ago. the winds are calm right now, but we are just a few miles south of the point fire. and that smoke is blowing in our direction right now. if the winds pick up, more smoke will be coming in this area. smoke is filling the sky as cal fire

continues to battle the point fire burning brush around dry creek lane is still pushing clouds of smoke into the air, and the wind is not helping. >> it smells kind of like a wood smoke. >> forest fire, you know, it's definitely a little bit thick up here in healdsburg today. >> john norman runs a mobile knife sharpening company in the north bay. he's been all over today, from santa rosa to cloverdale. his workday has been smoke filled. >> i started my morning in santa rosa. there was a little bit of smoky smell in the morning. i was in cloverdale around 11:00 or so. a little bit thicker up there. and now here in healdsburg, kind of the thickest i've seen all day ever since this fire started on sunday, smoke has been traveling to nearby cities, triggering spare the air alerts. >> the smoke from the point. fire was creating conditions that were getting into the unhealthy for sensitive groups range on the air quality index. >> abc seven's accuweather forecast shows where the smoke could blow through tuesday afternoon. heading south and east, the darker colors indicating more smoke in the air

. >> smoke is a danger in and of itself. and so, you know, we've dealt with this for a long time. ironically, usually the smoke is the thickest, not where the fire is. >> as the battle to contain the point fire enters day two. sonoma county is keeping evacuation orders in place. learning from previous fires 2017 tubbs fire. >> the sonoma complex fires. everybody got caught on their heels. we got smoked, there was this mantra here that was never again. not never a fire again, but never get caught on your heels again. >> now, sonoma county officials and the air district are telling people if they have breathing problems to limit time outside. this is not the greatest air to be breathing right now. so if you do have one of those conditions, it's best to just stay inside for the time being, especially if the smoke keeps blowing south with those winds picking up for now. reporting live in windsor. ryan curry abc seven news brian, thank you. >> the point fire is threatening vineyards sky seven video shows smoke over the lago di murlo vineyards in geyserville. it appears some type of building

was destroyed there. you can see a pile of debris on the ground and a charred line of trees nearby. video also shows some burned vines, but it's unclear how much the fire spread there. >> and sky seven is giving you a pretty good look. live over the burn area in sonoma county. as you can see, there's still just a lot of smoke. flames have diminished significantly, but there's a lot of smoke. a firefighters say windy weather is a challenge today, but the winds seem to have eased at least a little bit. >> yeah, let's see how quickly and when they'll be gone for good. checking in with spencer. christian. hey, spencer. >> okay, christine and dan, there is some encouraging news with the winds. they are easing up just a bit and the relative humidity is expected, of course, to rise tonight, as it typically does during the late night hours. here's a look at fire conditions or weather conditions i should say near the fire. right now it's about 85 degrees. relative humidity dangerously low, only 16% at the point where these readings are being taken, the wind is being reported as calm. but of course it's not very calm as you see on the

broader picture here of surface winds across the bay area. and we've got wind speeds, certainly not in the powerful gusts range up in the north bay, which is good news, but we still have gusts up to about 18mph at santa rosa. and many other locations have even stronger winds. the encouraging news is that going into the evening hours, although the winds will remain strong and gusty for a couple of hours later tonight, we'll see those winds diminishing significantly, along with an overnight increase in relative humidity, which humidity, which will of course help the firefighting effort a little bit. and here's a look at the relative humidity forecast as well. you can see it increasing during the late night and overnight hours. i'll have the full accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later. kristen spencer, thank you. >> p-g-and-e's today launched a round of inspections to help prevent fires caused by power lines. it's part of a drill to help improve the public safety. power shut off response when the utility has to inspect lines for damage before it can turn power back on. the pre inspections are happening in santa clara and santa cruz counties. p-g-and-e's share this video of a previous

inspection. there is no psps currently in effect. >> wildfires have broken out across california as the weather warms up. there are 26 fires burning around the state right now. 15 of those sparked over the weekend and have already burned more than 20,000 acres. now, one of those fires is the post fire burning in los angeles and ventura counties. in just two days time, it's already scorched more than 15,000 acres. that makes it the state's largest fire by far of the year so far. a firefighters are battling strong winds with a red flag warning in effect for the i-5 corridor. the fire is only 8% contained, so the battle will continue there for some time. you can track the fires burning across the state with our abc seven news wildfire tracker. click on the fire icon to learn the latest on each of these fires, including acreage, acres, burned, and containment. you can find it all on our website, abc seven news.com/fire map in the south bay. >> living along san jose's

guadalupe river will be off limits if the city's mayor has his way. matt mahan joined homeless advocates at the river today to talk about a multi year strategy to provide shelter for the unhoused. city council members recently approved millions of dollars in this year's budget for a housing plan, and the mayor talked about his vision. >> i believe we have to build basic shelter, including safe sleeping and safe parking sites for folks who are out here and when they're available. i believe we need to require that people come indoors and take advantage of them. >> the city faces new pressure to find a solution. san jose says it has until next june to end pollution within its waterways and come into compliance with the clean water act, or risk fines. >> a beached whale has washed up on the shores of half moon bay. a sky seven flew over the scene this afternoon. the whale is located about two miles south of the ritz-carlton hotel. it's the same area where a 49 foot humpback whale washed up two

years ago. it's unclear what led to this latest incident, but the marine mammal center says ship strikes are one of the most common causes of death for whales here in the bay area. >> in just a few hours, san francisco's democratic party mayoral candidates will take the debate stage again. all five leading candidates will face off at the uc san francisco law campus. this is their second debate coming off of the heels of last week's discussion. the event is sold out with more than 500 tickets already reserved. tonight's debate begins at 7:30 p.m. >> one of san francisco's biggest and brightest attractions has been taken down. the sky star wheel at fisherman's wharf has been disassembled for upgrades. scheduled to reopen to the public on july 1st, the 150 foot observation wheel has been open on the wharf since it was quickly, remember, moved from golden gate park to the waterfront in time for the apec summit back in november. >> closing arguments get underway in the trial of the man

speaker emerita nancy pelosi. >> abc7 news reporter stephanie sierra was inside the courtroom. she is live outside the hall of justice with the story. steph. >> yes, dan and christian prosecutors began closing arguments today, articulating a clear and consistent theme throughout this case, a theme they describe the simple truth. given the substantial amount of evidence revealed throughout this trial, showing david depape spent months planning to carry out this an attack an attack that he calls a rampage to hold. then house speaker nancy pelosi hostage. now, earlier this month, the judge dismissed three out of the eight felonies depape was facing, citing double jeopardy given his federal conviction. the 44 year old defendant is still charged with five felonies, including aggravated kidnaping, which carries a life sentence without the possibility of parole. today, the prosecution carefully recapped each piece of evidence

and made their case as to why it supports the charges, highlighting the defendants own words that he specifically targeted pelosi to interview her and post a video online before heading to his many other targets, adding he would, quote, break her kneecaps if she didn't tell the truth. the prosecution also pointed to specific searches to pap made on the pelosi's family, and the weapons and technology devices he purchased to carry out his so-called mission. looking ahead to tomorrow, the public defense team will present their closing arguments, and we're expecting public defender adam lipson to further paint a picture to the jury about david depapes mental state and reported personality disorder leading up to the attack on paul pelosi and we're expecting that jury deliberations will follow. we're live at the hall of justice. stephanie sierra, abc seven news. >> steph, thank you. now to an abc news exclusive interview with keith papini, the

ex-husband of sherri papini. she is the reading mom who faked her own abduction and lied about it. keith papini is speaking about it with abc news correspondent matt gutman for the first time since his ex's arrest. >> hey yo, hey yo. >> she made us all believe that her story was true. >> he was the husband at the center of a kidnaping hoax that captivated the country. now, keith papini, after seven years of silence, revealing new details about how his wife sherri faked her own disappearance, lied to authorities, and claimed that she'd been kidnaped. the hoax didn't just last the 22 days that she had disappeared. it lasted for years, six years, and every single day in the new hulu documentary series perfect wife, keith recounts the years long saga. >> i wanted to get the truth out there and really wanted to let everybody know, like how convincing sherri was. >> in 2016, the california mother of two vanishing after going for a jog as the husband,

keith, was the first person police questioned in her disappearance, but he passed a polygraph test. do you say that you were living this perfect life, there were cracks. she was telling other people that you were abusive. she told friends that you'd kill her if she ever left you. are those allegations true? >> oh, of course not. >> keith. helping lead the search, but without any luck. then on thanksgiving day, sherri turned up on the side of a highway. are you chained up? >> yes, yes. okay. shackled bruised and branded. >> and when we interviewed keith. right after it happened in 2016, he broke down. >> she literally lived through hell. >> but now he says even then there was doubt. when you first encountered her in the hospital, what was your first instinct? >> when i pulled back the curtain and i saw her and i saw the look in her eyes, i felt in that moment that she was lying and it wasn't until when i really got close and i could

just see the amount of injuries, bruises, burns to her body. and it was a shock to me. and i remember thinking how horrible of me to even think that she could have done this to herself. >> perfect wife the mysterious disappearance of sherri papini streams thursday on hulu and tomorrow morning on our streaming show. abc seven at seven. we'll talk with keith papini live. that's tomorrow morning from 7 to 8, wherever you stream. >> all right, let's take a look. take a look now, outside, around the bay area, different shots showing you what this day has been like. still breezy in many spots, but fairly warm. >> yeah, spare the air, but it is a pretty picture. let's check in with spencer. >> yeah, it is a spare of the air day because of the smoke burning. the smoke being transported down into other parts of the bay area from the point fire by the winds blowing in that area. but we will see less and less of the smoke accumulating in the atmosphere over the next day or two. and improvement in air quality.

here's a look at what's going on with our satellite radar. composite image showing the winds that have been steadily out of the north northwest. the last couple of days, beginning to shift to a more directly onshore flow out of the west. that's going to help push the smoke away from the bay area over the next day or so. but right now, we're still looking at pretty gusty winds, generally about 18 to nearly 30mph across the bay area. not quite so strong up in the north bay where the fire is burning. of course, as in other parts of the bay area, the 24 hour temperature change is fairly significant. about 4 to 9 degrees warmer over most of the bay area than at this time yesterday, and we are still under this red flag warning until 8 p.m. for the interior mountains and higher elevations of napa and sonoma counties, with winds. the steady winds about 10 to 20mph. gusts 25 to 35mph, or even higher at times. and of course, relative humidity dangerously low 5 to 15. now that applies also to the remainder of this area in red under the red flag warning,

these areas under this warning until 8:00 tomorrow morning for the north bay interior mountains. it will expire at 8:00 tonight. on we go to the look from sutro tower out over san francisco, where it's currently 68 degrees. we have mid 70s right now in oakland and hayward, 82 at san jose, redwood city, 7963 at half moon bay. lovely view from mount tam, but you can see that smoke sort of accumulating in the atmosphere here. of course, accounting for the not the red flag warning, but the spare, the air alert that we had today, 85 degrees right now up north at santa rosa, only 77 at petaluma, but other locations are in the mid to upper 80s, napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. and a beautiful view at the golden gate as we check out the weather headlines today. spare the air alert, but it will be lifted tomorrow. although still not the best air quality tomorrow. red flag warning north bay interior mountains that expires 8:00 tonight. and then on wednesday we expect a return of the coastal fog and the onshore winds, giving us a cooling

effect overnight. we'll see the winds continuing flowing out of the northwest, pretty much mixing out any clouds until about early morning hours. we'll see a few clouds entering the picture here, so we'll start the day tomorrow with a few high clouds, but mainly bright skies. overnight. low temperatures will be mainly in the mid 50s so not much of a range there. a little cooler at the coast, a low of 49 at half moon bay and highs tomorrow about 60 at the coast and we'll see mid 70s around the bay shoreline mid to upper 80s inland and skipping ahead you can see the maximum temperature range not changing much on thursday which is the first day of summer. but friday and saturday we'll see inland highs getting into the mid to upper 90s. so a big warm up at the end of the week, taking us into the weekend. >> all right. get ready for the scorcher. >> yeah thanks. it will be a scorcher. >> well rising temperatures is one thing. shifting sands are a sign that summer is nearly here as well. today, city crews began the yearly redistribution of sand at san francisco's ocean beach public works staff will

move about 30,000yd■!t over the next two weeks to reduce the amount of sand build up on the great highway, and another phase of a big improvement project at san francisco's airport is now complete. also, a group of students spending their summer in san francisco. how their stay could help bring historically black colleges and universities to the west coast
