what these strange creatures are. and how they found a safe haven at the san francisco zoo. >> from abc seven live. breaking news. >> good evening. >> i'm ama daetz, and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. we begin with breaking news, tracking several wildfires burning around the bay area and northern california tonight. >> yeah, the newest one is called the arrow fire. there are evacuation orders in effect because of this fire, which has burned about 5000 acres near copperopolis. that's in calaveras county. now, the fire has been burning since 330 this afternoon. so far, firefighters have zero containment and they are fighting winds gusting to 30mph. another fire that sparked today, called the sites fire, is almost as big. smoke from this fire is visible here in the bay area. started in colusa county around 2 p.m. and has burned more than 4000 acres. firefighters have zero containment. cal fire says hot and dry conditions are making the job harder. >> also developing tonight,

sonoma county has declared a local emergency in response to the point fire near lake sonoma. sky seven captured some of the smoke rising from the wildfire earlier today. the fire has burned 1200 acres since sparking yesterday and is 20% contained so far. two homes have burned down. cal fire crews are checking on how many other buildings have been damaged. the fire is on the south side of lake sonoma, west of geyserville. it's burning toward healdsburg. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn is there. >> it was a much better day for firefighters today. cal fire says crews made great progress. they got a better handle on the flames and kept the fire from growing. >> the fire came from that direction. >> the point fire burning in sonoma county near lake sonoma, forced about 400 people from their home and businesses. the fire burning intensely on sunday afternoon. taylor brinkman of raymond burr vineyards knows with all the brush and the trees and everything, it's like it's, you know, it's a tinderbox heavy winds and low moisture in the

air were factors for fast moving flames on sunday. >> the wind really started to whip up around, i want to say around 330, 4:00. and that's when it started to get really smoky here. and that's when we knew, oh, the fire is actually right there. >> on monday, cal fire conditions were much better. the wind was significantly less. after surveying some of the damage, crews determined that two homes so far have been destroyed in the fire. a number of other structures have been damaged, but it's too early to say exactly how many. according to cal fire crews got better containment around the fire mopped up hot spots. cal fire says five helicopters in the air today were a big help with water drops. there haven't been any new evacuations ordered. again. cal fire says this was a great day for fire crews because they kept the fire from growing in cloverdale, suzanne phan. abc seven news. all right, so we want to bring in abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel for a look at those conditions. >> we do because, sandhya, there are concerns in parts of the bay area actually beyond where the

fires are burning, right? >> that's right. dan and ummah, the colusa county fire is sending smoke into the bay area. along with that fire up in sonoma county. so let me show you the conditions near the point. fire right now it is much better. 68 degrees relative humidity has creeped up 34% and the winds are really calm. so this should really help the firefighters. but a red flag warning still remains in effect for solano county until 8 a.m. tomorrow, as that northerly wind gusting 20 to 35 miles an hour, combines with low humidity. i mean, 5 to 15. and that fire danger remains elevated. winds are gusty right now over the higher terrain. mount diablo 36 miles an hour. air quality is in the good to moderate range, but when you look at purple air, you will notice there is some pockets of worse air quality across parts of the north bay due to those fires burning to our north. and we take a look at the smoke forecast and you will notice at 11:00, still seeing some of the smoke impacts across parts of the north bay and into the east bay. as we head into 2

a.m. really will remain kind of hazy across the region through the morning hours, and then more smoke will be coming in aloft. there is a spare the air for today, an air quality advisory for tomorrow, moderate air quality for the north bay coast and central bay and good elsewhere. wednesday is going to be a repeat of that. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast coming right up. ama and dan. okay, sandy, thanks a lot. >> and you can track or actually let's talk about the biggest wildfire in the state that's burning right now. it's burning through los angeles and ventura counties, putting 50 homes at risk. >> the post fire, as it's called, is more than 15,000 acres in size and just 20% contained. reporter sid garcia from our sister station in los angeles, talked with firefighters about what they're facing while water dropping helicopters were filling up at pyramid lake, and crews were hiking into the rugged terrain to do their work, cutting a line around the post fire. >> it's burning in the los padres national forest. the fire is threatening the 53,000 acre sespe condor sanctuary. what's

burning is mostly brush. the winds are pushing the fire south. >> we currently have numerous crews engaged in going direct in the buck creek and piru creek drainages, where the fire is currently hung up. >> what's it looking like now as far as weather? >> so the fire is getting wind tested right now. we're getting sustained winds of 10 to 15 with gusts up to 35 miles an hour. so the crews are in there right now going direct, trying to put handline in to prevent the fire from further spreading into those drainages. >> here's some of the damage that left behind in gorman. nearly two dozen cars destroyed at this auto repair shop right off interstate five. the fire started north of here in gorman, and as you can see, it burned its way through hungry valley. we are on the west side of interstate five in the los padres national forest. the wind is pushing it southeast towards pyramid lake. a fire this big this early in fire season. well according to a ucla climate scientist, it isn't surprising

the reason what rainy seasons have grown. a lot of grass and brush to burn. >> we're halfway through june. we're starting to see increased activity. but nothing, nothing. all that out of the ordinary yet at scale at least. i think that's going to start to change, probably within the next couple of weeks. so i would say probably by july uh- we're going to see the manifestation of a really active fire season. >> and well over 1000 firefighters are battling this blaze. and the cause that's still under investigation. reporting from pyramid lake, i'm sid garcia, abc seven news. >> and you can track the fires that are burning across the state with our abc seven news. wildfire tracker. click on the fire icon to learn the latest on each fire, including acres burned and containment. you can find it on abc seven news.com/fire map. >> new at ten san jose police arrested a man for hitting a spectator with his car during a sideshow on saturday. he faces charges of felony hit and run

and felony reckless driving. police say an officer tried to help the injured spectator, but people swarmed his car. they hurt the officer and did severe damage to the vehicle. san jose police are working to identify those who participated in the assault and the vandalism, and the department posted online today saying that they will expend every effort to arrest those involved. a different kind of health warning tonight from the nation's top doctor. the u.s. surgeon general is calling for a cigaret style warning label on social media sites. necessary he believes, to protect children. abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley looks at how that kind of label could affect parents and schools. >> there's a warning label on packs of cigarets and tobacco products. now, the u.s. surgeon general wants to require a warning label online for social platforms, saying social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents. >> it's become clearer and clearer that there are

significant harms from social media, and we need to be taking action right away. >> doctor ruston is a primary care physician who has worked on the nationally distributed screenagers movies trilogy. >> it's super fun playing on my mom's cellphone. awesome how you can watch videos on youtube and sharing photos. >> the films have roots in the bay area and have been shown in over 15,000 schools. >> and what social media does is it throws in two ton wrench into that already difficult phase of adolescence. first, it does this by constant comparison, and the second is really heightening social aggression. >> congressman mark desaulnier weighed in, saying, i wholeheartedly back the surgeon general's recommendation that social media platforms be given a warning label, just like we've employed for other public health threats like tobacco and alcohol. what good would a warning label do? well, it could empower parents to limit access to social media at home, and it

universities to the west coast is taking a big step forward. a new initiative called black to san francisco kicked off a six week scholar program. 60 students from more than 20 hbcus will spend their summer in san francisco. abc mornings anchor kumasi aaron, who's a proud hbcu alum, welcomed the scholars in a ceremony at usf. you are going to have the best summer ever. >> san francisco is such a beautiful, world class city. >> the students will participate in paid internships and will get to explore the city's rich culture. several students spoke to abc seven news about what excites them the most. >> being able to take what i've learned at an hbcu and bring it over to where there's like a lesser minority of black folk in the community, inspiring other people to see what's going on

around the other parts of the us. >> and bring it to the west coast. >> getting to spend more time with other black students and really enrich myself in that way. and then also it be in a professional setting and all of us get to empower each other professionally. >> the ultimate goal is to eventually bring an hbcu satellite campus to san francisco. this program could make the city a top contender for hbcus looking to expand west. >> all right, well, we all have them, right? cell phones, though, could be off limits on public school campuses in the los angeles unified school district tomorrow, the school board will consider first steps to craft a policy that would ban student phones and social media use during the school day. reporter anabel munoz, from our sister station in l.a, has the story. >> cell phones are a common distraction for many people, including young students. >> stars.and talked to teachers and principals and parents and even students in my youth advisory council. they all reported the same thing, which is that, yes, this is a huge distraction. it's leading to worsening mental health
