diamond. >> tonight we remember willie mays, who died this morning at 93 years old. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. we appreciate you joining us tonight. from san francisco to the larger sports world and beyond, we are remembering the forever giant who played his way into the history books. mays died today from heart failure, his son said in a statement. his father passed away peacefully and among loved ones, mays played the majority of his 23 year career with the giants. >> michael mays thanked the team quote from the bottom of my broken heart for the love they've shown him, calling the team his life's blood. announcers broke the news today in the middle of the giants game in chicago. >> we are very sad now to relay this information that has just been released by the giants, that the great willie mays has passed away. he passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 93. >> an abc seven news sports

director, larry beil, leads our team coverage tonight. >> he does. and, larry, this is such a legacy we're talking about and such a loss that everyone is feeling deeply about tonight, not just in the city, but around the world. >> yeah, there's overwhelming sadness. and john miller was describing he was trying to call the baseball game while also passing on the news of willie mays. if you look at the web, there's a number of broadcasters in major league baseball who had a hard time even just announcing it. they were all broken up. >> and it wasn't just because he was a great ballplayer. no, it was a great man. >> yeah. i mean, just wonderful. wonderful. like, there's no way to quantify the impact willie mays had on baseball and the lives of fans who were lucky enough to interact with him. here's a look back at the life of the say, hey kid, willie mays. >> hey hey, hey, say willie, say hey, say woo, swing it at the plate. say hey. >> willie mays has been called the greatest all around baseball player that ever lived. when it came to hitting for average,

hitting for power base, running, throwing and fielding, the say hey, kid was the ultimate five tool player. born may the 6th, 1931, in westfield, alabama, mays excelled at an early age. at only 14, he was playing semi-pro baseball with his father while still in high school. his professional career began in the leagues with the birmingham black barons, but it was the new york giants who signed mays to a major league contract. >> i really didn't care who signed me. i wanted to get out of, the south and not not because of, any racial thing there is because i wanted to go and maybe help my family to make a money, and i did for years after jackie robinson broke the color barrier when he made his debut less than three weeks before his 20th birthday on may 25th, 1951, mays went hitless in his first 12 at bats. >> in his 13th, he hit the first of his 660 career home runs. he

would go on to garner rookie of the year honors, and he was on deck when bobby thomson hit the shot heard round the world. the giants won the pennant. >> the giants with the pennant in 1952. >> mays career was put on hold for almost two full seasons after he was drafted into the army during the korean war conflict, many believe mays would have hit 700 plus home runs if not for that layoff, when mays returned to action in 1954, he hit 345 with 41 homers and won the national league mvp award in a four nothing world series sweep of the cleveland indians. he made arguably the most famous catch in baseball history on vic wertz way back. back in his oh man 1957 season, the giants relocated to san francisco. it was as a san francisco giant that mays would have his most memorable offensive display, a four home run game against the milwaukee braves in 1961.

willie's stats are second to none in his 22 year career. he batted 302 while collecting 3283 hits. he won 12 gold gloves in consecutive years, was a two time national league mvp and 24 time all-star. in 1972, mays was traded to the new york mets. he would retire at the end of the 73 season. >> it's difficult right now to even, try to explain to you how much i love baseball and how much baseball means to me, i think we had what you call, a love affair. >> in his first year of eligibility, mays was inducted into baseball's hall of fame in 1979. and one thing that really makes willie's passing even sadder is that he was going to be honored in birmingham as a tribute to the leagues at rickwood field in birmingham, alabama, on thursday. that's where mays starred as a teenager with the birmingham black barons. they actually had a game there tonight and announced his passing in the middle of the game. ladies and gentlemen, we

have some very sad news to share a short time ago, the san francisco giants major league baseball and the willie mays family announced that the say hey kid willie mays, one of the greatest players in the history of our game, has passed away at the age of 93. and while the fans in willie's former hometown processed that news, a similar announcement took place in chicago, where the giants were taking on the cubs. fitting orange you in the sky, they put up a tribute on the scoreboard, and here's how the giants reacted after the game. >> we'd love to, obviously would have loved for him to be able to watch that game and watch the giants take the field where where he played, but yeah, i think it probably even if possible adds more to going there obviously where she was, you know here with us to see it. >> but he'll be he'll be watching over the game and you know it's definitely one of those times to reflect on the

important things in life. and you know, he had such an impact on this game and on so many people. so to be able to be involved in the celebration for him is an incredibly humbling experience. >> that will be quite a scene on thursday. and i have to say, you know, i've seen the catch from 1954 over the shoulder so many times, and i'm just looking at it how like how how you couldn't see the ball. you can't. i mean, that's what made willie mays, willie mays. >> and just as we were talking about the all around player. >> ultimate ultimate. yeah. legendary born sports. >> all right, well, morning fans showed up to the willie mays statue at oracle park today, despite the team being out of town in chicago. >> abc seven news reporter j.r. stone is live tonight at that shrine to the iconic player. hi, j.r. i spoke with one woman. >> i'm a. fans have left flowers . yes, but they've also left things like baseballs, notes, beer, and even peanuts all in memory of a man who meant not

only so much to the giants, but also baseball and society in general. one by one, willie mays fans arrived at oracle park tuesday, hours after learning of his death, to pay their respects to the late san francisco giants center fielder. >> paying homage. obviously to the goat, the great willie mays. >> some left flowers, others notes that read you are always our say, hey kid and forever giant. >> and he clearly had skills that were god given hit throw, catch. willie did it more perfect and more effective than almost any other individual playing baseball. >> former san francisco mayor willie brown was friends with willie mays and says, what he did in the process of chasing equality in san francisco and

beyond was monumental. his son sensitivity to the whole process of people not wanting black people around let add to many white people changing their attitudes, and all because of willie mays. >> i suspect that there's probably no other african american athlete or white athlete that ever had as much social impact on all of us as did willie mays fans just taking a moment to remember the kid they loved so much. >> it was must see tv when he was at bat. you stopped and you watched him, in the field. he was the finesse was incredible. he just everything he did was just done with grace. >> and back out here live at oracle park, you can see all of the different items that were left in memory of willie mays. i

talked with one man who said he won't soon forget the memories he had watching with his now 93 year old father watching willie mays play live. he said he spoke with his father earlier today. they were both certainly saddened over what had happened. reporting live in san francisco j.r. stone abc seven news and j.r. >> what a privilege for those who were able to see him play back in the day. and as you stand in front of that statue now which is which is so iconic, i thought what willie brown said was so powerful about his impact as a ballplayer, but far more importantly, in so many ways, his impact on our society. >> and he certainly had that impact. and you know, one of the points that willie brown made earlier today, dan, was, he didn't complain about these. he made statements by just some of his actions. and it really went so far. and that's why he put them up there in a figure that really meant so much. and, years

later was just such a genuine person. willie brown telling a story on how he was trying to get a group into at&t park at the time and, reached out to willie mays, and willie mays said, sure. and brought them all into his box. and it was the two willie's that hosted all of them. he even brought baseballs and signed those baseballs for everyone. he was certainly a class act in every way as well. >> great way to say that class act indeed jr thank you. >> and back to mays home state of alabama, where fans learned of his death at the field where he was due to be honored this week. fans who took in tonight's double a game were stunned to learn of his passing to hear this, prayers and thoughts to willie mays family. >> yeah >> it's kind of overwhelming right now. and we're just getting up to go home to atlanta and we hear, well, no, i said

yeah. both city hall and coit tower are lit up in giants orange for willie mays. as we celebrate and remember his life and legacy. for now, though, we are going to move to new details about the east bay man arrested on suspicion of several instances of arson at uc berkeley last month, including the firebombing of a police car. >> now, at this moment, we're not naming him as he has not yet been formally charged. abc7 news reporter tim johns has those new details and more on the fire that these fires caused. >> several law enforcement agencies, including the fbi, arrested the suspect around 10 a.m. monday. police say the suspect is connected to four separate arson incidents on uc

berkeley's campus, including the firebombing of a police vehicle. while charges have not yet been filed by alameda county district attorney pamela price, she has until a thursday deadline to possibly do so. the arson incidents took place amid pro-palestinian demonstrations on the campus, which were otherwise largely peaceful. the suspect's lawyer believes law enforcement's investigation was political in nature. he tells me he thinks investigators want to place blame on the suspect because of his opposition to the israel-hamas war. no evidence has been presented to me that shows any connection between my client and these incidents. the arson events have caused backlash from many in the community. in a statement posted to acts, the jewish community relations council said, quote, property damage, violence and threats are not forms of peaceful protest. resorting to illegal intimidation techniques does not end the war against hamas. these attempts to harass and attack not only jews and israelis, but the greater bay area community is wrong and desperate. we are proud to be jewish. we will not live in fear. the suspect is being held

at the alameda county jail on a $1 million bail. the suspect is also currently involved in a san francisco felony vandalism case from last fall in berkeley. tim johns abc seven news. >> all right. we are tracking developing news. with several major wildfires still burning across northern california tonight, all with evacuations still in place. the sites fire in colusa county has burned more than 15,000 acres, with containment at 5. in calaveras county, the arrow fire has destroyed at least three buildings near highway for more than 5300 acres are burned, with 23% containment there. and in sonoma county, the point fire near geyserville is now 50% contained, with no growth since yesterday. >> new at 11. there are some serious structural problems at a berkeley middle school that's led to everyone being relocated until at least 2026. the school district says. extensive dry rot was found at longfellow middle school while it was undergoing

renovations. it's going to move the next two school years to the berkeley adult school, so the building can be properly repaired. >> another east bay politician will face a recall vote this year. alameda county's registrar says petitions for a recall referendum on oakland mayor xiang tao had enough verified signatures. tao is the second east bay politician to face a recall vote, along with alameda county district attorney pamela price. organizers of the drive to oust tao tell abc seven news she is to blame for the city's problems, the violent crime and property crime and crime overall, and lack of public safety is dramatically affecting our quality of life. >> it is making our city unlivable. it is keeping businesses away. it is slowing down our commerce. and it's the reason we have $117 million budget deficit. >> mayor tao has not responded to our requests to comment on the recall vote. the city council will finalize next month whether tao's recall will be on the november ballot.

>> and a story we are following closely. the richmond city council is still meeting right now over putting a proposed oil refining tax before voters in the fall. it's part of an ongoing battle between the city and chevron, and would charge $1 per barrel produced in richmond. it's estimated the tax would bring in as much as $90 million a year if it passes. >> all right. time now for our news to know with a look at some of the headlines that you don't want to miss, starting with a life changing move for undocumented families living in the united states. >> all this time with fear and uncertainty, we can fix that. >> president biden announcing an executive action today to protect the undocumented spouses and children of us citizens. it will provide legal status to about half a million families. to qualify, people will have to have lived in the us for at least ten years. as of yesterday , the second trial of the man convicted of attacking congresswoman nancy pelosi's husband is in the hands of a jury. now, david depape was

already convicted on federal charges for the attack on paul pelosi at his home in san francisco. depape attorneys argue some of the state charges, like attempted kidnaping and kidnaping, do not apply. governor newsom says he wants to restrict smartphone use at schools all across the state. california's biggest school district, la unified, just approved a cell phone ban today for the students. this comes as the us surgeon general announced that he wants to add labels on social media. warning warning people about the dangers to children's mental health. >> commuters and beach goers will get to weigh in on some changes to a portion of san francisco's ocean beach. san francisco supervisors are submitting a measure to build an oceanfront park. if passed, the city would build a 17 acre recreation space along two miles of the great highway. the goal of the change is to reduce automobile pollution near the beach and make commutes more reliable by diverting cars to sunset boulevard, the great highway is currently car free

during weekends, but that arrangement ends in 2025. >> all right, well, summer arrived on thursday, but it's going to really feel like it shortly after that. >> that's right. meteorologist sandhya patel has that for us. sandhya. yeah dan. >> and we're going to go from the 80s to the 90s and one hundreds after summer arrives. but first let's talk about the immediate future here. the air quality advisory due to wildfire smoke was extended through tomorrow. moderate air quality expected in the north bay coast and central bay. the smoke is coming from the sites fire up in colusa county and still impacting our air quality. you can see that some areas are moderate from san rafael to san francisco to oakland, even san jose and the santa cruz mountains. so do expect this. as you look at the smoke forecast, that smoke coming down tomorrow morning into parts of the north bay, and then in the afternoon, it will be primarily in the north bay, but can't rule it out in the east bay like we saw today with the haze and the smoke around on live picture right now from our golden gate

bridge camera. it's a little murky because of the haze, but we also have some fog forming right around half moon bay. the fog. the sea breeze will take those temperatures down. look at today compared to tomorrow. upper 80s, santa rosa, napa. tomorrow you're going to be down 12 degrees in napa, 76 degrees. you'll feel it. you'll notice it. san francisco from 72 to 62 and san jose, a 13 degree drop from 89 to 76 degrees. as we take a look at live doppler seven onshore breezes are picking up. the marine layer is deepening in response to a system that is coming our way. but here's a look at what is encouraging the relative humidity values have gone up, which is good for the firefighting efforts. 78% right now in oakland, 61 in san jose. as we take a look at your temperatures there in the 50s and the 60s, running cooler than where we were yesterday, onshore breeze 34 miles an hour in san francisco right now. a live view from our emeryville camera tomorrow morning. fog, a cooler afternoon, friday and saturday. the heat spikes inland and early

next week we'll have our typical summer spread for the bay area. but really, the fog is just going to expand tomorrow morning and then you'll see those higher clouds like today, creating the hazy conditions along with the smoke. so those temperatures drop. the winds will pick up anywhere from 20 to 25 miles an hour. stronger gusts as we head into the evening hours. your morning numbers will be in the 40s to the 60s. watch out for the fog, visibility will be poor in some areas, so you'll need to give yourself that extra time tomorrow afternoon. fog is going to linger along parts of the coast. it is going to be breezy upper 50s there, but you will see a mix of sun and high clouds inland areas in the low 80s. your accuweather seven day forecast. it's cooler for juneteenth. summer's here on thursday at 1:50 p.m. and we get a little bump up in temperatures, but really the heat is on friday, saturday, sunday from the 90s and one hundreds inland. but don't worry, 60s coast side

good evening. the giants were in the middle of their game in chicago, when word came down that willie mays had passed away at 93. now, keep in mind, a number of giants players have had the opportunity to meet willie in the clubhouse. even major leaguers were star struck. talking to the say-hey kid after the game tonight, the giants spoke about the legend. we just lost starting pitcher logan webb. he learned about it just as he was going out to pitch, and needed extra time just to process his thoughts. i took my hat off and, you know, i was kind of looking at the scoreboard and just thinking about it, and i kind of looked at the umpires and i was like, i think you need to stop the clock because i, i had to take a moment to, you know, think about it and, be prideful for the jersey i was wearing, the hat i was wearing, and know that, you know, willie did the same. >> you know, i grew up watching games at candlestick park and love baseball. you know, because of willie mays. i talked to him when i got the job. i called him and talked to him for a while.
