holiday, i'm rhiannon ally, and i'm andrew dymburt. >> we begin with the extreme weather as far north as the canadian border will feel like 100 degrees today, while in the west, wildfires have turned deadly and in the northern rockies they are digging out from snow. >> the. but the big story is the extreme heat the likes of which we haven't seen. now in decades. they've never seen this before. the national weather service in caribou, maine, near the canadian border, has issued its first ever excessive heat warning. the heat index is expected to hit 105 degrees today. >> notice the coast is not in this, and neither are the mountains. >> states from maine to missouri are bracing for some of the hottest weather in decades. this map shows expected temperatures in multiple cities. the red boxes represent record highs at the white house yesterday. >> hold on to somebody pass out. yes okay. >> can we the press secretary rushing to help a woman who fainted in the heat? >> i think we're okay. i think we're okay to move on. and does anybody need water in

massachusetts? >> extra concern when the state's 911 system went down for more than an hour, the cause is still under investigation. >> we thought it was important, particularly with the heat that we're about to experience, to make sure that we give people the opportunity to know what's going on. >> doctors warn people on certain medications are more susceptible to the heat, some blood pressure pills and antidepressants make patients more prone to dehydration. in phoenix, it's so hot. medics are carrying so-called ice cocoons, body sized bags that immerse heat victims in ice to quickly lower their body temperature. the average american city is now experiencing twice as many heat waves as 40 years ago. last year, we saw the most heat waves since 1936. that's the year 5000 people died nationwide in one heat spell, when temperatures hit 120 as far north as north dakota. meanwhile, today in the west, hot and dry conditions are

fueling at least 19 wildfires. at least one person has been killed in southern new mexico. that's thousands fleeing a fire there. at least 500 buildings damaged villages in immediate danger. >> now, of that fire, we are just hoping and praying that the fire can be contained. >> a different extreme in the northern rockies, where more than a foot of snow has fallen with record low temperatures reported in montana. we are also watching the texas gulf coast, which is now under a tropical storm warning. we will check your full forecast in just a few moments. >> a major drug bust near the southern border for the first time, chinese nationals are being charged with money laundering for a powerful mexican drug cartel. officials say both sides teamed up to flood the u.s. with drugs like fentanyl. abc's em nguyen is here now with the details. and. good morning. >> andrew. good morning. yeah. prosecutors have unveiled what they claim is the first case proving a link between the sinaloa drug cartel and chinese

money laundering. federal prosecutors in southern california have announced a historic bust charging 24 suspects in connection with an alleged money laundering scheme between mexico's sinaloa drug cartel and chinese brokers, while seizing millions of dollars in drugs, including 300 pounds of cocaine. we're here today to announce criminal charges against a partnership, a partnership between a cartel in mexico and a money laundering organization based with chinese nationals. prosecutors claim the cartel has been using chinese money laundering to hide more than $50 million, alleging they converted proceeds from the sale of illegal drugs in the u.s. into chinese currency. the cartel allegedly then used the chinese currency to import goods from china back to mexico. among those goods, precursor chemicals to make more drugs, including fentanyl and meth, millions and

millions of dollars are moved in. >> proceeds from the drug sales in the united states back down to mexico, and wealthy chinese nationals in this country are given access to virtually limitless supplies of cash. >> these charges come as chinese migrants face more scrutiny. ecuador has now suspended visa free travel for chinese citizens, blaming a worrying increase in migratory flows from china. officials say the south american country has become a key transit point for thousands of chinese migrants headed to the u.s. southern border and back to those drug and money laundering arrests. u.s. officials say law enforcement in both mexico and china helped arrest some of the suspects who had fled the u.s. rhiannon. >> all right, edwin, thank you for that. back here in new york, an undocumented migrant from ecuador is due in court today charged with the horrific sexual assault of a 13 year old. neighbors in queens recognize the suspect from a wanted poster

and held him until police arrived. police say the man forced the girl and her male friend into the woods at knifepoint, tied up the boy and then assaulted the girl. they say the suspect entered the u.s. illegally through texas in 2021. >> 11 people have been hospitalized, including children, after a home exploded in syracuse, new york. a car with a child inside was found beneath the rubble. crews spent hours making sure no one else was trapped. no word on what caused the blast, but no gas leaks were reported before the explosion. new tensions between the u.s. and israel. >> the white house has reportedly canceled a meeting with israeli officials in protest of prime minister benjamin netanyahu's latest remarks. netanyahu has claimed the u.s. is withholding weapons from israel, claiming shipments have been delayed, officials tell axios. the biden administration was shocked by netanyahu's ingratitude, and the white house yesterday denied any change in policy. >> the great willie mays has died, he once said. he did

everything in baseball a player can do and did it with love, but he was far more than just a baseball player. willie mays, the say hey kid was one of baseball's greatest, both on the field and off it. born in alabama, he started playing pro ball in the leagues while still in high school. i had to stay in school, so i played saturday and sunday when school was in. >> when school was out, i would go on the road with them at 20, he was playing for the new york giants, where he'd win rookie of the year. >> his first hit, a home run. he would hit 660 of them in his career, ranking sixth on the all time list. in 1952, he was drafted into the korean war, serving two years, and when he returned, he would thrill fans with an mvp season capped with this moment known as the catch. his back to home plate, mays making one of the most memorable plays of all time. the giants would win the world series every time i went on the field, i enjoyed what i was doing. >> i gave everything i had. >> they eventually moved to san francisco, but years later, mays

resigned, facing a sex scandal this morning, the pastor of a texas megachurch has resigned amid allegations he sexually abused a girl for years, beginning when she was 12. >> it's just happens to be god's time. i think for it to come to light. >> cindy clemesha, appearing on cnn, accuses gateway church pastor robert morris of molesting her between 1982 and 1987, when morris was a traveling pastor. after clemesha went public, morris acknowledged he was involved in inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady, not referencing the girls age, saying it was kissing and petting, adding it was wrong. morris says he returned to the church in 1989 after two years of counseling, claiming he resumed preaching with the blessing of clemesha family, which she denies. >> he didn't come forward and confess he was turned in, and when someone's turned in, what are they sorry for? are they sorry because they got caught?
