this morning. >> plus, celebrating juneteenth, the events happening across the bay area today to mark what many call our country's second independence day. good morning and happy juneteenth. >> yes, we're going to start the check of our forecast with drew. >> yeah. good morning guys. so it's going to be cooler than average today a little breezy this afternoon. we'll get you outside a live look from the exploratorium camera a little bit of cloud cover out there. not widespread fog this morning, but you can clearly see a little bit of cloud cover over the city skyline. so here's current sky conditions. right now. most of us have clear skies from concord to san jose, napa. our typical spots like the coast, half moon bay, seeing the most cloud cover at this hour and is one of our cooler mornings out there. santa rosa, sonoma right now coming in in the mid and upper 40s, currently mid 50s for a lot of us around the bay shoreline from oakland to hayward, 52 right now in san francisco. so today we will have temperatures cooler than yesterday and also a bit below average for this time of the year. upper 70s, lower 80s for our spots inland. today we'll have a mix of sun and clouds as we head throughout the

afternoon. now around the bay shoreline. we're starting out in the 50s. we'll get those temperatures into the upper 60s to near 70 degrees, but it gets windy here this afternoon. we'll have winds gusting about 20 to 30mph. and then along the coast we have that cloud cover right now, maybe a little bit of sunshine try and peeks through here in the afternoon upper 50s. and again, it is pretty windy along the coast. we'll have winds upwards of about 25 to 30mph. let's check in with amanda, see how the commute is going. good morning drew. >> our overall map showing a clear commute so far for the juneteenth holiday, but we do see that typical slow down through the altamont pass. you can see 32 minutes. it will take you from tracy to dublin, 17 minutes from san rafael to san francisco, and then antioch to concord. that trip will take you 13 minutes back to the desk from san francisco to the sports world and beyond. >> this morning, we are remembering the forever giant who played his way into fans hearts. willie mays, number 24. the say hey kid died yesterday at 93 from heart failure. his family and the san francisco

giants announced his death jointly last night, his son michael mays, said in a statement. his father passed away peacefully among loved ones. michael mays thanked the team quote from the bottom of my broken heart for the love they've shown him, calling the team his life's blood, his exuberance, his incredible talent on the field made him one of, if not the greatest baseball player of all time. >> i suspect that there's probably no other african american athlete all white athlete, that ever had as much social impact on all of us as mays. >> here in san francisco, fans have been showing up to the willie mays statue at oracle park to pay their respects. the hall of famer spent practically his entire career playing with the giants, 21 of his 23 seasons in the big leagues. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live for us there this morning. lena >> reggie. fans in mourning of the baseball icon came here to

oracle park in the hours after learning of his passing. this is where a nine foot bronze statue of willie mays still stands today. it was first unveiled 24 years ago, and you can see some of those flowers left behind today. the giants ballpark is located here at 24 willie mays plaza. this is where fans filed in one by one yesterday evening to pay their respects. some left flowers, baseballs, beer or peanuts. others left notes that read you are always our say hey kid and forever giant. former san francisco mayor willie brown was friends with willie mays and says what he did in the process of chasing equality in san francisco was beyond monumental. >> his sensitivity to the whole process of people not wanting black people around led to many white people changing their attitude. all because of willie mays mays historic career in

baseball started when he was just 17 years old. >> he joined the birmingham black barons back in 1948, helping them to the league world series the same season. because he was still in high school at the time, he would only play on weekends. he went to on become the greatest, the greatest center fielder who ever lived. the giants say a public celebration of willie's life will be announced at a later date. live in san francisco lena howland, abc seven news thank you, lena. >> as part of juneteenth celebrations, willie mays is set to be honored tomorrow at the stadium where he began his career rickwood field in birmingham, alabama. the giants will play the cardinals in the first major league game at that stadium. fans were there last night as news of his death spread. >> to hear this uh- prayers and thoughts to willie mays family uh-

>> yeah. that hurts. >> it's kind of overwhelming right now and we're just getting up to go home to atlanta and we hear, well, no, i said no. >> he's still wow. it's overwhelming. it really is >> part of the ceremony will be this mural paying tribute to birmingham's hometown hero. you can see he's sporting his original uniform. you can see more of our coverage by the way, on the giants legend willie mays online at abc 7.com. >> now we want to get you updated on the wildfires that are burning across the state. the biggest fire is still in southern california, and it's burned 15,000 acres so far, the second biggest right here in northern california and colusa county. and amanda is tracking the situation there. >> amanda kumasi, the sites fire has exploded in size since it started on monday. it's now more than 15,000 acres and is just 5% contained. colusa county is

pretty sparsely populated, but there are evacuation orders for people living there. cal fire says high winds and the remote area where the fire is burning have made this one hard to control. in calaveras county, the arrow fire has grown to nearly 5400 acres. it's now 23% contained. a firefighter was hurt yesterday morning, but their injuries do not appear to be life threatening, and we're hoping for more progress when cal fire gives its update this morning on the points fire in sonoma county, they announced right at 630 yesterday morning that the fire was 50% contained, and there hasn't been an update since, but cal fire was hoping improving weather conditions will give them the upper hand. >> so the moisture coming in from the ocean over the fire area will put our relative humidities into the 30% range, and overnight recovery is into the upper 60s, which is a fantastic advantage for firefighters to continue to get a good handle on that fire situation. >> the points fire has burned

more than 1200 acres near lake sonoma since it started. over the weekend. several buildings have been destroyed. evacuation orders remain in place near healdsburg. it's not known when those will be lifted back to you. kumasi >> thank you amanda, and you can track the fires burning across the state with our abc seven news wildfire tracker. just click on the fire icon to learn the latest on each fire, including acres burned and containment. you can find this on abc seven news.com/fire map. >> this morning, the lawyer for an east bay man arrested after a series of arson incidents at uc berkeley last month, claims his arrest is politically motivated. and we are not naming the man since he hasn't yet been formally charged. abc seven news reporter tim johns spoke with this lawyer about the accusations. >> several law enforcement agencies, including the fbi, arrested the suspect around 10 a.m. monday. police say the suspect is connected to four separate arson incidents on uc berkeley's campus, including the firebombing of a police vehicle. while charges have not yet been filed by alameda county district attorney pamela price, she has

until a thursday deadline to possibly do so. the arson incidents took place amid pro-palestinian demonstrations on the campus, which were otherwise largely peaceful. the suspect's lawyer believes law enforcement's investigation was political in nature. he tells me he thinks investigators want to place blame on the suspect because of his opposition to the israel-hamas war. >> no evidence has been presented to me that shows any connection between my client and these incidents. >> the arson events have caused backlash from many in the community. in a statement posted to acts, the jewish community relations council said, quote, property damage, violence and threats are not forms of peaceful protest. resorting to illegal intimidation techniques does not end the war against hamas. these attempts to harass and attack not only jews and israelis, but the greater bay area community, is wrong and desperate. we are proud to be jewish. we will not live in fear. the suspect is being held at the alameda county jail on a $1 million bail. the suspect is also currently involved in a san francisco felony vandalism case

from last fall in berkeley. tim johns, abc seven news at 509 this morning, and we're gearing up for a cooler than average afternoon. >> cooler than yesterday. in fact, today is the coolest day of the week, and we will have some breezy conditions later on this afternoon. first, we'll look at highs today versus average. you can see a lot of us staying in the 60s and 70s for our daytime highs, and across the board we are cooler than average by several degrees, so we will need that jacket on a little longer this morning. if you're out and about. we have a little bit of cloud cover as well along the coast. so here's future weather as we go. hour by hour 9 a.m. we're still quite cloudy along the coast. we're still trying to break down that fog around the east bay shoreline, and certainly across the city. now, heading into lunchtime, we'll keep those clouds close to the coast. we'll have sunshine breaking out around the bay shoreline, but you may notice some high, thin cirrus clouds moving in. it's all associated with a trough that is giving us that cooler than average day today. and temperature wise, you can see will be in the 60s for most of

us around the bay shoreline, upper 70s to lower 80s and our warmest spots inland. but again, it will get breezy around here. here's our wind gusts. future tracker showing you by 2 p.m. those winds are already picking up. will likely see those winds in excess of 30mph across the city. in the north bay. those winds about 15 to 25mph. even into the evening, we're still pretty windy and we'll do it again tomorrow. that onshore flow is with us again to keep us on the breezy side once again. so highs today we're at 62 in the city, so it is a cool day in san francisco. below average in oakland at 6776. in san jose 82 in santa rosa. but heading into the weekend, hotter weather does return. but you will see those numbers coming up in a few minutes. >> all right, drew, thank you. phones will soon be banned from schools in la. now the governor wants there to be a similar ban statewide. >> and people in oakland could be choosing a new city leader come november. oakland mayor xiang town, now the second leader this year to face a recall. >> it isn't even summer yet. that's tomorrow. but muni wants you to start thinking ahead to

up closer to including not one but now two, recalls amanda. the effort to oust oakland's mayor has just reached a major milestone. >> yeah, reggie alameda county's registrar, has announced the petition to recall oakland mayor xiang tao has enough verified signatures to move forward. tao joins alameda county district attorney pamela price as the second east bay politician to face a recall. the effort to remove tao is likely to go on the ballot this november. recall organizers submitted around 40,000 petition signatures, far more than the 24,000 needed for a new election. organizers blame tao for the city's issues with violent crime and property, crime and crime overall, and lack of public safety is dramatically affecting our

quality of life. >> it is making our city unlivable. it is keeping businesses away. it is slowing down our commerce. and it's the reason we have $117 million budget deficit. >> mayor tao has not responded to our requests for a comment on the recall vote. the city council will finalize next month whether tao's recall will be on the ballot in november. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. san francisco supervisors have approved an overnight curfew for some businesses in the tenderloin, so certain stores will have to close from midnight to 5 a.m. every day. this is an attempt to prevent drug related crime and loitering in the neighborhood. business owners face $1,000 fines for every hour they break the curfew. this curfew will begin 30 days after mayor breed signs signs the legislation. san francisco community ambassadors are asking the city to save the program they work for. they rallied outside city hall yesterday. the program started in 2010, in response to increased violence in the

bayview and visitacion valley neighborhoods. so now there are ambassadors in six neighborhoods. but the program is at risk of ending because of budget cuts. san francisco's is facing an $800 million deficit. as it stands now, the ambassador program will continue through the next fiscal year, but it does not have the funding beyond that. >> we are not a burden, but we are a solution for the city. >> san francisco is planning to invest in other ambassador and outreach programs like the mid market and urban alchemy ambassadors program. >> it is official sfmta's board of directors has agreed to rip up the controversial center running bike lane on san francisco's valencia street and move the bike lanes back to the side. it may not be the solution some were hoping for during a presentation yesterday, mta officials warned that while a side running bike lane is more intuitive, it does have tradeoffs. each business is now going to be able to choose if

they have a parklet, if they're going to keep that parklet where it is next to the sidewalk, or with the bike lane closer to cars. so if they choose option two, which is the lane running next to the curb, officials warn the parklet could take up space that would otherwise be used for parking. there will also be now more disruption, what will happen in the coming months and through an eventual construction phase will be very significant for many, if not most, or maybe even all of the businesses that are impacted. sfmta staff will now work to solidify a design for the new bike lane that should happen later this year, and that will include meetings with the community. today is juneteenth, a day commemorating the day enslaved african americans in galveston, texas, learned the civil war had ended and they were free. in recognition of juneteenth, the alameda county board of supervisors is honoring a local business woman, carol h. williams recognized for being an entrepreneur and for her work in the community.

using bart. even though today is a federal holiday and many government offices are closed, bart trains are running on a regular schedule today. you can visit their website to see the list of juneteenth events and celebrations before heading out the door. >> and there really is so much going on, like day and night, and i love to see it and hopefully it'll be nice. it will be get to sleep in a little bit, you have the day off and then you can enjoy all the events out there. >> just a little breezy. that's the only thing that may be the only fly in the ointment, but a nice afternoon on the way with our temperatures a little bit cooler than average. and we'll find those numbers heating up as we head into the weekend. so the accu weather headlines cooler and breezy for the holiday. today we showed you those below average temperatures with our last update. we do still have an air quality alert because of those fires nearby in northern california. some pockets of moderate air quality, mainly in the north bay. we'll keep you updated on that. but most areas outside of the north bay will actually have good air quality because of a nice onshore flow today. now the weekend outlook hotter weather returns just in time. as we say hello to summer. tomorrow we'll have those

temperatures heating up on saturday and sunday. look at the forecast today. it's a mix of sun and clouds out there. we'll have temperatures in the upper 70s, lower 80s inland around the bay shoreline. partly cloudy, windy this afternoon and 60s. and then along the coast it's quite cloudy and we'll stay in the 50s. so highs in our microclimates starting in the south bay, mainly in the 70s. that breeze later on this afternoon, cloudy along the coast for the peninsula, brighter as you head towards redwood city in palo alto. temperatures below average across the board in the city today. one of those days where the sun set the richmond. pretty cloudy. some sunshine downtown, but we are in the upper 50s to lower 60s with that wind picking up, gusting about 30mph in the north bay today, 70s and 80s under mostly sunny skies away from the coast in the east bay. it's in the 60s and 70s for daytime high 67 in oakland, about 70 in union city. again, remember that wind is going to get pretty active later this afternoon. and then inland will be in the mid 70s to the lower 80s. looking at your evening planner, it will be a nice

from los angeles or driving down from sac or redding or vegas, even. >> since the weekend event was such a success, organizers announced they will be putting together a music festival series. >> we definitely are going to do more. we have some dates locked in already, but we want to make sure we do it right. most artists big, they only go to b level cities, which we are to collect a check. we're not trying to do that. we actually want to create real experiences where these larger artists are like when they go on tour, they go, we need to stop in san jose. >> when it comes to nightlife, the ceo of the san jose downtown association said the city has exceeded pre-covid numbers. >> there are so many entities that that come up with, with ideas to create vibrancy and some interesting entertainment. foos is one of them. i think the rave was awesome. very respectful. it was over at 9:00. it's really generations coming together in our downtown, and it's wonderful. >> san jose foos has a following

trial of david depape. he's the man who was already convicted in federal court for attacking paul pelosi in 2022. there was a lot of drama before the case was turned over to the jury yesterday, and abc7 news i-team reporter stephanie sierra was in court to see it all. >> the verdict is now in the hands of the jury. but leading up to that, a lot happened today. two separate incidents of attempts to influence members of the jury. and i witnessed one of them. we'll show you some photos. this morning. the website of david depapes ex-partner, gypsy taub, was written on the wall of a stall in the women's bathroom. that website has been reporting false conspiracies about the case, and there's concern several jurors saw it last night. a similar

incident happened where a juror found some items, likely papers in the same bathroom with information attempting to sway jurors. bailiffs found it in the trash and confiscated it. today, the judge ordered gypsy to be excluded from the courtroom and parts of the courthouse for the remainder of this trial. he said, quote, you have been attempting to influence corruptly one or more members of this jury. following that, the defense presented closing arguments describing depape as utterly exhausted and confused, living a solitary, isolated life, refuting the government's argument that depape wanted to kill people like gypsy and others on his so-called hit list. the defense also tried to argue some of the charges are not applicable to this case, like aggravated kidnaping that carries a life sentence, stressing that depape lacked intent to detain mr. pelosi. now, the prosecution used their last moments, with the jury replaying body camera footage of that moment. david depape struck paul pelosi on the head with that steel hammer as far as the
