hearts. willie mays number 24. the say hey kid died yesterday. he was 93 from heart failure. his family in the san francisco giants announced his death jointly last night. his son, michael mays, said in a statement that his father passed away peacefully and among loved ones. michael mays thanked the team, quote from the bottom of my broken heart for the love they've shown him, calling the team his life's blood, his exuberant, his incredible talent on the field made him one of, if not the greatest baseball player of all time. >> i suspect that there's probably no other african american athlete or white athlete that ever had as much soul impact on all of us as willie mays here in san francisco, morning fans have been showing up to the willie mays statue outside of oracle park to pay their respects. >> the hall of famer spent practically his entire career playing with the giants. 21 of

his 23 seasons in the big leagues. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live for us there this morning. lena >> angie fans in mourning of the baseball icon came here to oracle park in the hours after learning of his passing. you can still see where they've left some flowers and notes behind for him. and this is where a nine foot bronze statue of willie mays still stands today. it was first unveiled 24 years ago. the giants ballpark is located here at 24 willie mays plaza. this is where fans filed in one by one yesterday evening to help pay their respects. some left flowers, baseballs, beer or peanuts. others left notes that read you are always our say hey kid and forever giant. former san francisco mayor willie brown was friends with willie mays and says what he did in the process of chasing equality in san francisco and beyond was monumental. >> his sensitivity to the whole

process of people not wanting black people around led to many white people changing their attitude, all because of willie mays. >> mays historic career in baseball started when he was just 17 years old. he joined the birmingham black barons back in 1948, helping them to the league world series the same season. because he was still in high school at the time, he would only play on weekends. he went on to become the greatest center fielder who ever lived. the giants say that a public celebration of willie's life will be announced at a later date. live in san francisco lena howland, abc seven news. thanks lena. >> as part of juneteenth celebrations, willie mays is set to be honored tomorrow at the stadium where he started his career rickwood field in birmingham, alabama. the giants will play the cardinals in the first major league game at that

stadium. you can see more of our coverage of the giants legend willie mays online at abc seven news.com. >> now we want to update you on the wildfires that are burning across the state. the biggest fires still in southern california that's burned 15,000 acres so far, the second biggest fire here in northern california in colusa county. amanda is tracking the situation there. >> kumasi the sites. fire has exploded in size since it started on monday. it's now more than 15,000 acres and is just 5% contained. colusa county is pretty sparsely populated, but there are evacuation orders for people living there. cal fire says high winds and the remote area where the fire is burning have made this one hard to control. in calaveras county, the arrow fire has grown to nearly 5400 acres. it's now 23% contained. a firefighter was hurt yesterday morning, but their injuries do not appear to be life threatening and we are hoping for more progress when cal fire gives its update this morning on the points fire in

sonoma county, they announced right at 630 yesterday morning, the fire was 50% contained, but there hasn't been an update since. however, cal fire was hoping improving weather conditions would give them the upper hand so the moisture coming in from the ocean over the fire area will put our relative humidities into the 30% range, and overnight recoveries into the upper 60s, which is a fantastic advantage for firefighters to continue to get a good handle on that fire situation. the points fire has burned more than 1200 acres near lake sonoma since it started. over the weekend. several buildings have been destroyed and evacuation orders remain in place near healdsburg. it's not known when those will be lifted back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. you can track the fires burning across the state with our abc seven news wildfire tracker. click on the fire icon to learn the latest on every fire, including acres, burn and containment. you can find it at abc seven news.com. slash fire map alameda county da

pamela price has until tomorrow to file charges against a man accused of arson at uc berkeley. >> he's been arrested on suspicion of several instances of arson, including firebombing a police car. these incidents happened amid pro-palestinian protests on campus, which were otherwise mostly peaceful. the suspect's attorney believes investigators want to place blame on him because of his opposition to the israel-hamas war. he's being held on $1 million bail. he's also currently involved in a san francisco felony vandalism case from last fall. >> 6 or 7 this morning are okay. camera with a live look. you can see we are experiencing a mix of sun and clouds out there as our sun is up here. high humidity though 83. the winds right now out of the west. this is something we'll watch throughout the day there right now at 12mph. not a huge issue, but just want you to know it's going to get gusty later on this afternoon. winds about 15 to 30mph. so we'll take a look at the forecast across different regions. first we'll start in

myrrha is one step closer to including not one but two, recalls amanda. the effort to oust oakland's mayor has just reached a major milestone. >> yeah, kumasi alameda county's registrar, has announced the petition to recall oakland mayor shang tao has enough verified signatures to move forward. tao joins alameda county district attorney pamela pryce is the second east bay politician to face a recall. the effort to remove tao is likely to go on the ballot this november for recall. organizers submitted around 40,000 petition signatures, far more than the 24,000 needed for a new election. organizers blame tao for the city's issues with violent crime and property, crime and crime. >> overall, and lack of public safety is dramatically affecting our quality of life. it is making our city unlivable. it is keeping businesses away. it is slowing down our commerce and it's the reason we have $117 million budget deficit. >> mayor tao has not responded to our requests for a comment on

the recall vote. the city council will finalize next month whether tao's recall will be on the ballot in november. >> kumasi thanks, amanda. san francisco supervisors have approved an overnight curfew for some businesses in the tenderloin. certain stores will have to close from midnight to 5 a.m. every day. this is an attempt to prevent drug related crime and loitering crowds in the neighborhood, and business owners will face a $1,000 fine for every hour they break curfew , and the curfew will begin 30 days after mayor breed signs this legislation, san francisco's community ambassadors are asking the city to save the program they work for. they rallied outside city hall yesterday. the program started in 2010, in response to increased violence in the bayview and visitacion valley neighborhoods. now there are ambassadors in six neighborhoods, but the program is at risk of ending because of budget cuts. san francisco is facing an $800 million deficit. as it stands now, the ambassador program will continue through the next fiscal year, but it doesn't have funding beyond

that. >> we are not a burden, but we are a solution for the city. >> san francisco is planning to invest in other ambassador and outreach programs, like the mid market and urban alchemy ambassadors program. >> it's official sfmta's board of directors has agreed to rip up the controversial center running bike lane on san francisco's valencia street and move it back to the side of the street. it may not be the solution. some were hoping during a presentation yesterday, mta officials warned that while a side running bike lane is more intuitive, it does have tradeoffs. each business owner with a parklet will be able to choose to keep their parklet next to the sidewalk, with the bike lane closer to cars, or push the parklet out with a bike lane running next to the curb if they choose. option two, officials warn the parklet will take up space that could be used for parking. there will also be more disruption, what will happen in the coming months and through an eventual construction phase will be very significant

for many, if not most, or maybe even all of the businesses that are impacted. >> sfmta staff will now work to solidify a design for the new bike lane that should happen later this year. that will include meeting with the community. today is juneteenth, a day commemorating the day that enslaved african americans in galveston, texas, learned the civil war had ended and they were free. >> in recognition of juneteenth, the alameda county board of supervisors is honoring a local business woman, carol h. williams was recognized for being an entrepreneur and for the work in her community. >> i can say has taken me just about all my life to make great decisions, but i still make some poor ones. but that's our right, because i found out that it's not about making poor decisions, it's about learning and your ability to recover and keep moving.

>> williams launched her oakland based advertising firm in 1986, and has worked with numerous big name companies throughout the years. celebrations for juneteenth can be found all over the bay area today at golden gate park. the return of the monumental reckoning installation will feature hundreds of black women and non-binary individuals. the east bay regional park district offering a free park day. the museum of african diaspora, holding several educational events for children. and there really are so many events going on around the bay area, and a lot of them you can reach through bart. even though today is a federal holiday and many government offices are closed, bart trains are running on a regular schedule, and if you look on their website, you can see a lot of places that you can check out to celebrate juneteenth. before you head out the door. juneteenth lasts all month. i feel like i've been celebrating juneteenth all month. you have the day is actually here. the celebrations will continue and it's just

condolences continue to pour in for the forever giant willie mays died yesterday at the age of 93. mays was a giant on and off the field. in 2015, president obama awarded him the nation's highest civilian honor, the presidential medal of freedom, calling him a trailblazer. it's because of giants like willie that someone like me could even think about running for president. remarks, president obama said mays incredible lifetime statistics on the field helped carry forward the banner of civil rights. mays loved baseball, and he spoke about it when he retired from the sport in 1973. >> it's difficult right now to even, try to explain to you how much i love baseball and how much baseball means to me. i think we had what you call, a love affair. i think, the two together for 22 years have been

garden. the school says vandals tore apart their planters and ripped out the irrigation systems, and also broke apart wooden benches. >> we want to see people building up the community. we want to see them building up our schools. we want to see them supporting our kids and our and our families and our staff. and so it's very, very discouraging when we see something like this. it just it just shows us that there are people that have these ideas that that destroying is better than building. >> it's not clear how much these repairs will cost. some residents and businesses say that more needs to be done to keep oakland's montclare neighborhood safe. >> there have been several times where thieves have cleared out shelves at this rite aid. the oakland police department tells us they've been in the neighborhood multiple times in the last several months for reports of robberies, rite aid store employees tell abc seven news oakland police have assigned patrol cars to monitor the store. i don't like to see people go to jail, but there has to be some kind of consequence. other small businesses in montclair are also getting

robbed. the executive director of the montclair village association says an overnight burglary caused possibly tens of thousands of dollars in damage a couple of weeks ago. >> new at six california is hoping artificial intelligence will help the health care industry. state officials want ai to be used to translate health care information, including documents and websites related to health programs, benefits and services. they're hoping to save money and make critical information available to more people and what they call the country's most linguistically diverse state. the goal is to increase speed and efficiency of translation is already getting ready for the holidays. >> the ugly sweater you can buy right now that has a transportation twist. >> the great highway changes the san franciscans will getting will be getting to vote on whether to add a park along ocean beach first though, here's drew. hey there, 640 will get you going this morning. >> we do have a mix of sun and clouds out there right now. here's a look at the forecast over the next couple of hours after 9:10 a.m. we do expect full sunshine across much of the

region. the lone exception the coast will stay pretty cloudy today and cool. so across the board temperatures will be below average today. so forecast highs. that's the first column you see here. most of us in the 60s and 70s average this time of the year. in the middle column. so several degrees below that today. and it's also going to be a windy afternoon. those winds will gust about 20 to 30mph. so let's show you those winds. future tracker showing you by 2 p.m. you can feel that breeze certainly across the city with those winds in excess of 30mph for the east bay, the north bay, the south bay. those winds about 20 to 25mph. but is it onshore flow? and that does mean relative humidity does stay high as we head into thursday. it's another day of these breezy conditions, but by friday, the winds will shift their direction and we'll start to warm up as we head into the weekend. but today, temperatures mainly in the 60s and 70s, a high of 78 in concord, 76. in san jose, only 67 in oakland. with that gusty

wind later this afternoon, 62 in the city hitting 76 in napa.

justin timberlake's arrest. that was breaking news yesterday on abc seven mornings. timberlake was arrested yesterday morning

in sag harbor, new york, under suspicion of driving while intoxicated, sources tell abc news. he blew through a stop sign, swerved into the opposite lane. he claimed to have only had one drink, but police say timberlake had bloodshot, glassy, glassy eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol. he has been released without bail. timberlake is currently on tour. it's not clear if this could impact any of the dates. >> a new development san francisco and other california cities will not be getting the authority to regulate self-driving robotaxi services, at least for now. this week, south bay state senator dave cortez pulled his bill that would have given local leaders power to decide when self-driving cars can come to their cities. cortez told the examiner that he made the decision after the assembly transportation committee, quote, basically gutted the bill. some lawmakers and industry lobbyists argued against the bill. they worried some cities would end up banning robotaxi services, creating a situation where people would not be able to use the services to travel between cities.

and poorest residents. the san jose state human rights institute sent the recent 2024 silicon valley pain index. this is a report and it went to local leaders. it looked at 190 statistics from more than 100 recent studies conducted on silicon valley. ideally, they would have shown progress eliminating income inequality and discrimination. instead, the 2024 silicon valley pain index found they got worse. now, the hope is leaders who can make change. look at the report and listen. >> we know the patterns and we know the areas that are getting worse. we highlighted them in that report, in the report. and so we're saying respond to this need. >> some of the key highlights show santa clara county, number one in the nation for unsheltered homeless. it also ranks first in the percentage of unsheltered youth, the alum rock and eastside union school districts, the number of homeless students is almost three times higher than it was in 2020. >> this fall, san francisco voters will get a chance to help

enshrine abortion rights in the city. yesterday mayor london breed introduced a ballot measure called the san francisco reproductive freedom act. it includes protections for abortion services and reproductive care. it also makes sure jurisdictions outside california will not have access to information that could be used to prosecute a patient or a health care provider. >> and i have a 14 year old daughter, and the fact that my daughter has less rights than i did growing up absolutely terrifies me. and that fear that we all are in, especially women. i know, and especially us that have daughters, you know, you can't sit in that fear and what we are doing today, we are getting into action. >> the reproductive freedom act will appear on the ballot in november. >> san francisco voters will get to decide in november if the great highway will be permanently car free along ocean beach. supervisor are proposing a two mile oceanfront recreation space and promenade. it would be from sloat to lincoln boulevard,
