woods son and later meet pepper, the profane parrot. >> the animal shelter trying to find this potty mouth bird. a new home from abc news. >> this is america this morning >> good thursday morning, everyone. i'm rhiannon ally, and i'm lionel moise. >> in for andrew. we begin this morning with extreme weather across much of the country, from cars stranded on a highway in new mexico to people without power in pittsburgh. as record heat spreads across the northeast, authorities in new mexico are responding to one of the worst wildfires in state history, and a neighboring texas tropical storm alberto is flooding homes and wreaking havoc. and we'll get to all of it. beginning in the southwest overnight, a new video of cars stranded on this highway in new mexico after a severe storm brought hail and flooding rain and triggered a dust storm near santa fe. at least 23 cars involved in a pileup crash. 18 people were injured. the weather whiplash coming after a wildfire

killed at least two people near ruidoso, officials calling it one of the most devastating fires in new mexico's history. more than 1400 buildings, including up to 500 homes damaged with the coming of the moisture that we're seeing, the fire conditions will improve in the coming days. >> but we are not out of the woods yet, the fire will continue to burn over the coming days. >> in california, at least 12 wildfires are burning and the number of fires in that state up 9% compared to this time last year. but the number of acres burned has skyrocketed by nearly 1,500. meanwhile dangerous heat is tightening its grip across 14 states from the midwest to the northeast. boston breaking a record, hitting 98 degrees. more broken records are expected today across the northeast, with excessive heat warnings up to bangor, maine. in pittsburgh, where a storm earlier this week

caused thousands of power outages, it could be sunday before power is fully restored and in the south, tropical storm alberto making landfall on the texas gulf coast, dumping up to ten inches of rain. storm surge topping four feet. >> we had to start changing plans for what we were going to do for the rest of the week. >> such extreme weather events are forcing more insurance companies to raise their rates. one insurance company in florida, which saw historic rainfall this month, just announced a maximum rate hike of 14. others in florida and in california have stopped issuing new policies altogether. and back to alberto. part of louisiana also saw severe flooding. we'll check today's forecast in just a few moments. >> a manhunt overnight for a violent felon accused of at least four murders. police warn stacey lee drake is armed and dangerous. he was last seen at a motel in morrilton, arkansas. police say he bought some

camping gear. he may still be in that area now. drake has been linked to a homicide in his home state of alabama. he's also accused of killing three people in oklahoma. >> we turn now to the rising tensions between the white house and israel, amid allegations that the u.s. weapons shipments for the war in gaza are being delayed, the rising tensions come as we learn more about a disturbing series of anti-semitic attacks here at home and abroad. abc's em nguyen has details on that. and good morning. >> lionel. good morning. the white house is said to be enraged and frustrated by israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu's recent comments, which sources say appear to be driven more by politics than by reality. this morning, mounting tensions between the u.s. and israel, officials from both countries were trying to schedule a security meeting today, but the white house postponing after prime minister netanyahu posted this video accusing the u.s. of withholding weapons from israel during world war two, churchill told the

united states, give us the tools, we'll do the job. >> and i say, give us the tools and we'll finish the job a lot faster. >> biden administration officials outraged, calling netanyahu's comments beyond the pale, pointing out only one shipment of bombs was paused due to concerns about their use in densely populated areas of gaza. netanyahu faces new scrutiny at home after an israeli military spokesperson called hamas an idea a political party rooted in people's hearts, adding whoever thinks we can eliminate hamas is wrong. his statement, directly contradicting netanyahu's goals. israeli military officials later walking back those comments. meanwhile, iran backed rebels in the region are causing new trouble for global trade, releasing video of another attack on a foreign ship in the red sea. one crew member is feared dead. the attacks at sea in protest of the war in gaza. it comes as more anti-semitic incidents make headlines around the world. in paris, protesters

in the streets after a barbaric attack on a 12 year old jewish girl. and in new york city. just as your chance to get out. police have released an image of the man wanted for making shocking anti-israel remarks in a subway train that was taken over by palestinian supporters and back in washington. despite the postponement of that security meeting today, two israeli officials are traveling to the white house for a separate meeting today, lionel. >> all right. i'm thanks so much for that update. vladimir putin is in hanoi this morning looking to strengthen ties with vietnam after signing a strategic agreement with kim jong un in north korea. the north says the deal requires both countries to provide military assistance to the other in the event of war. kim jong un also vowed full support for russia's war in ukraine, and putin would not rule out military cooperation that could help north korea's nuclear program. a new flashpoint this morning in the separation between church and

state schools in louisiana will now be required to display the ten commandments. >> the new law is sparking debate on both sides of the political aisle. here's abc's andrea fujii. >> this morning louisiana has become the first state to require the ten commandments to be displayed in public classrooms, from kindergarten to publicly funded universities. >> if you want to respect the rule of law, you got to start from the original law giver, which was moses. >> governor jeff landry signing the bill, which requires a poster sized display or framed document of the ten commandments to be installed by january. landry says the law isn't just for religious reasons, but also for, quote, common cultural heritage. >> now, hope and i pray that louisiana is the first state to allow moral code to be placed back in the classroom. >> critics argue the law violates the separation of church and state. >> we learned the ten commandments. we went to sunday school, and as i said on the

senate floor, if you want your kids to learn the ten commandments, you can take them to church. >> the aclu plans to sue, arguing this law will make kids of different religious beliefs feel unsafe, saying politicians have no business imposing their preferred religious doctrine on students and families in public schools. under the law, the state funds won't be used for the commandment displays. they'll be paid for by donations similar bills have been proposed in other states, but ran into legal challenges. decades ago, the supreme court struck down a similar law in kentucky. but now, if challenged, this louisiana law will go before a more conservative supreme court. lionel rhiannon. >> all right. we'll keep a close eye. andrea. thank you. a bizarre story about the perils of partizan politics from the small state of vermont. a state lawmaker was caught on camera pouring water into her colleague's tote bag on multiple occasions for months. so the owner of the bag set up a camera to catch the person. she apologized, but did not say why

morning america. every day of your life. >> families who lost loved ones in two fatal boeing crashes are now urging the justice department to prosecute the company and impose a $24 billion fine. nearly 350 people were killed in the 737 max crashes in ethiopia and indonesia back in 2018 and 2019. the justice department deferred prosecution after charging boeing for allegedly misleading the faa, but a decision on whether to proceed with the trial is expected next month. the families were on capitol hill tuesday as boeing ceo addressed the company's safety issues, including a mid-air door blowout. >> now to texas and a disturbing crash. we want to tell you, though, everyone involved in this is okay. a horrifying hit

and run near the dallas fort worth airport. a driver ramming into two cyclists. the vehicle appearing to stop briefly before running over one of the victims. police now using this video in their investigation. >> if he had driven six inches to the right, i'd be a dead man. >> tom geppert was the man. run over. >> i just gone to the back of the group to get a little break. when the car hit me. pushing me forward and falling to the right is the last thing i remember. >> he suffered a concussion, but otherwise only minor injuries. investigators say the driver of that white suv, 31 year old benjamin hylander, was chased down by other bikers before he was taken into custody by airport police. he faces multiple charges, including dwi and aggravated assault. as for geppert, he has a message for drivers who feel inconvenienced by bikes on the road. >> everyone remember that when they see a cyclist, it is a person, and that person is a father, a mother, a grandparent.

across the country. a cyber attack on a software provider has left thousands of dealers unable to access their computer systems that manage sales. it's not clear if the hackers were able to access any customer data. >> the countdown is on to the summer olympics in paris, but a team usa star is now sounding the alarm about safety in the water. this morning, team usa's ivan paskevich is raising concern about swimming in the sun. >> at the end of the day, it's the olympics and the safety of the athletes has to come first. >> with the opening ceremony next month in paris, officials plan to hold open water and triathlon events in the sun. but swimming in the iconic river has been banned for 100 years due to poor water quality. it comes as a movie about the river makes waves on netflix about a monster shark in the river attacking swimmers during a triathlon while sharks are not a real life concern in the sun, paris has

spent more than $1 billion in recent years cleaning up the river. but according to a company testing the water daily since april, not a single test has shown water quality suitable for bathing. >> definitely a big point of anxiety for me, especially since this is my first games, poskovic said. >> athletes were told that sunlight would kill the bacteria, while heavy rains could delay their events due to sewage runoff. either way, olympic officials tell abc news there's no plan b, the sun is iconic, and it would be amazing to say that, like, i was one of the first people to swim in it after such a long time, but i would rather compete at the olympics and have it be in a place that isn't the sun than not be able to compete at all because the sun was the only option. and listen to this. the mayor of paris planned to take a swim this week to show the river is improving, but it was postponed because of poor water quality. our streaming channel will have much more on these concerns in paris in the coming days. on abc news live prime with linsey davis at 7 p.m. eastern. >> looking forward to that.
