holiday honoring willie mays. >> how fans can pay tribute to the say hey kid today at oracle park. >> plus, a new name and a new address. hundreds of tenants just displaced by flooding in their san francisco building. moving back in with a former resident is saying about why he did not return. >> good morning. it's thursday, june 20th to start the check of our forecast with drew on this first day of summer. >> yeah. i'm excited, i love it. well, welcome summer here. later on this afternoon at 1:50 p.m. that is the summer solstice. we're doing so this morning with a lot of cloud cover, but the sun, it is up on the horizon. here's a live look. this is our tam cam this morning. and you look at current sky conditions around the region. most areas reporting clouds right now. the lone exception as you move inland. concord has clear skies, but we will find sunshine breaking through those clouds close to about 9 a.m. this morning, and we'll get a nice afternoon on the way. temperatures right now in our coolest areas. we're in the 40s like san rafael, danville, even cloverdale. most of us beginning this morning in the 50s. so

looking at the forecast today, warmer than yesterday, we're close to average for this time of the year. we'll go into the mid and upper 80s inland today with a light breeze by 4 p.m. around the bay shoreline. it's breezy, not as windy as we were yesterday. we have those clouds right now giving way to sunnier skies, that cloud cover breaking down close to about 9:10 a.m. we'll see temperatures in the upper 60s, lower 70s, but the coast areas there will stay pretty cloudy and highs in the 50s. let's check in with gloria. see those drive times this morning. >> good morning. so that's segaller in pescadero has now been canceled. however there are still some big delays here. this is over northbound one at pompano beach, and right now they are allowing traffic to get through on one lane. earlier they had closed both southbound and northbound directions of one. however, because of this, again it's moving very slowly in this area. so give yourself a little bit more time. if you are driving through here. you can also take some alternate routes. if you are looking for an

alternate route, you can take 84. that's another way to get through this. and just going very slowly right now and looking live here in san jose, you can see traffic is very light on 87. so no major issues there. reggie >> gloria, thank you. today baseball fans from across the bay area will be able to gather to honor willie mays. he died tuesday at 93. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live outside oracle park, with more on the special event and how fans can participate. lena >> reggie. starting at noon today, doors will open here at oracle park. the giants wanted to give grieving fans an opportunity to come pay their respects in person and sign a condolence book. now, the giants say this is a free program in honor of willie mays. at 415, the ballpark scoreboard will air an away game between the giants and the saint louis cardinals that's being played at rickwood field in birmingham, alabama, the same place where mays career began back in 1948. the mlb says the game will serve as a tribute

to mays and to the leagues, in which he played before and after the game. oracle park will be showing historic images of mays on the big screen. >> my dad went to opening day, the first giants game ever, seals stadium in 58 and got to see willie mays play. and i lost my dad almost two years ago. sorry i brought flowers for, for willie, but for my dad >> and that was just one of the many stories we heard from fans stopping by the willie mays statue here yesterday. eileen behson bought a brick for her dad when the ballpark first opened. one, she intentionally got near the willie mays statue. so abc seven sports anchor chris alvarez is in birmingham to cover this tribute game. he will have a full report from the ground in alabama later on today. and here at oracle park, doors are expected to stay open

until 8:00 tonight. live in san francisco. lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you lena, we are learning new details about a shooting that happened during a juneteenth celebration at lake merritt in oakland last night. and gloria, police say now that it all started with a sideshow. >> that's right. kumasi overnight, oakland police released new details about the shooting, saying about 5000 people had gathered at the lake yesterday evening to celebrate juneteenth. and around 8 p.m, a sideshow started. now. soon after that, a fight broke out down the street and as people gathered, that's when shots were fired. you can see all the police activity right here. at least four people were shot and they were taken to local hospitals and others were injured. oakland police do not believe that anyone has died from their injuries. they say they had a strong presence in the area because of the holiday. >> i can tell you we had 28 officers and four sergeants out here, so we had a full detail monitoring this event because we

knew events were going to happen and we wanted to make sure people had a safe time, but unfortunately that did not happen. >> no suspects have been arrested in the shooting, but one person was arrested for assaulting a police officer while officers were trying to direct people to a safe area. after that shooting, oakland police are asking anybody with any photos, videos or any information to contact them. kumasi >> thank you gloria. the state legislature pumping the brakes on an effort to allow san francisco and other cities to regulate self driving vehicles. we told you about this yesterday morning. a bay area state senator pulled his bill, claiming a series of amendment proposals would have gutted the measure. abc7 news south bay reporter laura martinez spoke with him about whether this is the end of the road. >> the fight over who controls self-driving taxis on city streets continues. state senator dave cortez pulled his senate bill 915 this week after the assembly committee on transportation presented major

amendments. the bill would allow cities and counties to install their own regulations around autonomous vehicles. >> local mayors, local city council members. they know their community. they meet every tuesday. they pass the laws. every week they pass new policies every week. we can't do that in sacramento right now. >> only the dmv is allowed to issue permits to av companies and has the authority to revoke permits if an av is not safe on public roads. all local fire and police is directed by city and counties, not the state. >> and yet the dmv is authorizing waymo to go into cities like san francisco and now 22 other jurisdictions. >> just last month, waymo announced they will be expanding fully autonomous, driving down the peninsula to sunnyvale. we spoke with tech expert ahmed bonafe, who expected the proposed bill would fail and said giving local control to cities could be complicated. >> we have only sometimes one

street that will separate one one town from another, one city from the other city. so what's going to happen? if i would like to take the robotaxi from this city to the other city and the other city has different rules or different restrictions? >> on wednesday, the autonomous vehicle industry association released this statement. we are encouraged that sb 915 will not move forward. fortunately the legislature understood the bill would have prevented safety and accessibility opportunities for millions of californians. senator cortez said. this is not the end of the bill. something similar will be reintroduced in january, and he expects by this time next year it won't face so much resistance. >> we're not here to ban robo taxis. i'm from silicon valley, you know, we're here to embrace technology, but we just want to make sure it's safe in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> now we're going to talk about this housing debacle and san francisco's soma neighborhood that we've been following for

almost two years. 600 tenants were displaced in 2022 after a water main break flooded much of the building at 33 tehama. and now about a third of the tenants are back as the building has reopened, the building has been renamed. they're calling it spira sf. it actually even has a new address. the company says they've done renovations inside and out. one former tenant decided not to return after learning that his rent would increase by 50. >> i wouldn't feel comfortable living there, anymore. just, you know, given the, the false promises they've made so far, they basically just fooling people so that, you know, they're the previous results. don't pop up on google search. so that's why they change the name. they've changed the address and the story. >> 90 original tenants have filed a lawsuit seeking compensation for everything that they've been through. >> 609 this morning, here's a look at the summer solstice forecast as they drop a quick thank you, gloria, we are saying hello to summer at 1:50 p.m, and it is the longest day of the

year, nearly 15 hours of daylight. it will be a nice afternoon as we switch those seasons. so here's a look at future weather. we do have a lot of cloud cover out there along the coast and across the city. we are seeing some drizzle first thing this morning. we'll break that cloud cover down by about 10:11 a.m. in most areas, and temperatures today are actually back to average after that cooler than average day yesterday. inland will be in the 80s around the bay. shoreline will be in the 60s and in the 70s. so highs today we'll go to 70 in oakland, about 81 in san jose, the city today close to average at 64. it gets breezy across the city this afternoon like yesterday 85 in santa rosa 70 the high in santa cruz with a lot of sunshine. look at the fair forecast. the sonoma-marin fair is underway later today and it will be nice. 80 degrees. but by saturday that's a hot afternoon. and petaluma we'll find a high of 92 degrees. in fact, saturday we just had a heat advisory issued for inland

scott's real name is jack berman webster, and police logs show that he was booked at 435 local time in the morning. jail records also show he paid a bond of $650, and is expected to be released. details about exactly what happened before the arrest have not yet been released. abc news has reached out to scott's representatives to get a comment. we'll let you know as we learn more. developing news out of north korea kim jong un and russian president vladimir putin have announced a new bilateral deal that's raising concerns with the us and the us allies. the deal includes a promise of immediate military assistance in the event either country faces war. observe others say this is the strongest connection between moscow and pyongyang since the end of the cold war. this morning, there are increasing tensions between the white house and israel over the war in gaza. gloria, it's gotten serious enough. the white house canceled a meeting with israel officials that was

supposed to happen today. >> that's right. reggie. officials from both countries were trying to make that meeting happen in washington, d.c. today, but it was called off after prime minister benjamin netanyahu shared a video accusing the united states of withholding weapons from israel during world war two. >> churchill told the united states, give us the tools, we'll do the job. and i say, give us the tools and we'll finish the job a lot faster. >> the biden administration was outraged by the comments, saying they were, quote, beyond the pale. they pointed out only one shipment of bombs has been delayed over concerns they might be used in densely populated areas of gaza, despite the meeting being called off today, two israeli officials are still traveling to washington for a separate meeting. reggie. all right. >> thank you. some new information this morning about san francisco mayor london breed's effort to bring a university campus downtown. it seems like it's not working out, at least not right now. the university of california tells the examiner that due to their

current financial situation, they are not considering a new campus or any new facilities in san francisco currently. but they aren't closing the door to the idea in the future. you may remember a university campus or student housing. downtown has been just one of mayor breed's ideas to fill vacant space and retail space. breed's office says it will continue to engage with the university of california about downtown. >> you can help to name san francisco's next two ferries. a contest is going on right now. it ends on monday. there are 12 options that have been narrowed down from nearly 300 entries, all coming from local students in kindergarten through 12th grade. now, some of the possible names include farallon gold rush, carl and painted lady go to san francisco bay ferries, social media pages. you can find the link to cast your vote. the ferries are expected to hit the water next year, and in 2026. tonight, there is a free pride comedy show in san francisco. thrive city is hosting the event. that's the outdoor venue at chase center. this is video

face. >> something just a little unnerving. >> can you imagine how that smells. >> i didn't even think. no i don't, i don't want to think about that. >> it's the first day of summer. it is. >> all right, let's go. we are going to see some warm temperatures today and then gets even hotter here over the weekend. a heat advisory kicks in here on saturday. here is a live look. this is our east bay hills camera. you can see those clouds are pressing inland. but we will have sunshine prevailing across the region throughout the day. so the summer solstice is 150 this afternoon. that heat advisory just got issued for saturday in our inland areas. and the extended outlook will keep that sunshine and the mild conditions going. winds do pick up a little bit this afternoon, not as windy as yesterday, but still you'll find winds about 15 to about 25mph. so highs in our microclimates. let's start in the south bay with the first day of summer. we're back to average, so to speak. it's nice at 70 and 80s from santa clara to morgan hill at 84 degrees 70,

in santa cruz, along the peninsula. cloudy for half moon bay, but we'll find sunshine for millbrae, palo alto in the 60s and 70s. today in the city, we'll find more sunshine than yesterday. a little bit warmer, but still breezy with those winds at about 20 to 25mph in the north bay, it's getting warm 80s and 90s away from the coast, the coast from bodega bay, down through stinson and sausalito. keep it in the 60s for daytime highs in the east bay. warmer than yesterday, 70 in oakland, 76 in fremont, 72 in hercules and inland. not too hot, but we're warming up. we're back into the 80s in most areas later on this afternoon. now, overnight tonight, we'll have that cloud cover redeveloping in most areas, some coastal drizzle and those numbers in the 40s and in the 50s. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. summer starts here today. then we start to heat up. that heat advisory is here on saturday. look at those numbers. hundreds in our inland areas. then we'll cool off early next week. guys >> thank you joe. now we're checking in with ginger zee

the block party outside san francisco's castro theater, as abc seven news reporter luz pena shows us the highlight was a return of one of the historic theater's key features. three, two one hit. >> it. >> this is a moment for months in the making the iconic castro theater blade on marquee with a. as many celebrated the opening night of the san francisco international lgbtq plus film festival. >> so grateful for this opportunity to work with

frameline and celebrate the opening of their festival. showing the lil nas x documentary is a great way to kick off juneteenth. >> for more than 100 years, the castro theater has been home to many films, but for the past four months it's been undergoing a complete restoration, so seeing its blade light up was a sign of progress. >> think about the blade sign. it's bigger than this theater. it's even bigger than this neighborhood. it's a beacon of hope throughout the world. >> in february, we got to see inside the theater right before the work started. now this is it. the conservation work is happening in stages. first the ceiling, then the stage. they're getting ready to bring in the largest symphonic organ in the world and then putting in nearly 700 new seats, the $15 million restoration will be finalized next summer. so in the meantime, the theater is taking the celebrations outside with an outdoor film screening and a

can see on the horizon. we have a lot of cloud cover. so current sky conditions, most of us right now. you go outside, you look up, you are seeing the marine layer in most areas. but we will get that sunshine peeking out later on this morning. temperatures. right now we're in the 40s and our coolest area, san rafael. danville. good morning. 50 though in the city we're at 57. in san jose. so looking at our temperatures inland today, it's warmer than yesterday. we're pretty close to average for this time of the year. upper 80s by 4 p.m. and our warmest areas now around the bay shoreline. we have that cloud cover now breaking for sunshine. over the next couple of hours. we'll max out in the upper 60s and lower 70s, but along the coast it's limited sunshine. that marine layer hugs that coast pretty tightly. we'll keep those temperatures in the 50s. those winds, though they do get gusty out there about 15 to 25mph. let's see how those drive times are looking with gloria. good morning. >> good morning. we do have a sig alert to tell you about this morning. this is north of napa. there was a fatal crash that happened right in front of the robert mondavi winery. and this

right now to help cover this tribute game. he will have a full report from the ground in alabama later on today. for now, reporting live in san francisco, lena howland abc seven news thank you, lena, on our 3 p.m. show getting answers. >> former giants first baseman j.t. snow shared some of his memories about willie mays. >> the one thing i always remember about willie is he always wore a hat everywhere he went. when he went to the white house uh- parades, and it always had the g on it. he would never wear an sf hat or a new york hat. it was always a hat right there. seeing the videos with the g on it, because he just considers himself a giant, not a san francisco giant, not a new york giant uh, but just a giant. and he was a giant among players . and i got nervous asking him for his autograph the first time, because he was larger than life. >> the giants added a special patch to their uniforms in honor of willie mays. it's a circle with the number 24 and mays name written inside the giants started wearing the mays patch

yesterday. they will continue to wear it for the rest of the season. >> all evacuation orders and warnings for the point. fire burning in sonoma county have been lifted. the sonoma sheriff warned some properties may not have electricity. they're asking residents returning home to watch for emergency personnel who are still there. that fire burned 1200 acres and is 60% contained. there are still evacuation orders in calaveras county, about 100 miles east of san francisco. at least three structures have been destroyed in the arrow fire. cal fire says the flames are now 45% contained. 5300 acres have burned, one retired firefighter and his wife didn't leave when law enforcement asked. things came down to the wire when the flames approached their home, got garden hoses ready and everything that you could use water on, stuff like that. >> and the wife, she starts packing. we hit it. lucky it did come roaring down through town and everything, but they got on cal fire and copper got on it really good and stopped it. >> and in colusa county, the

sites fire is only 10% contained. after burning more than 19,000 acres. it is currently the largest active fire in the state. cal fire says several spot fires nearby sprung up tuesday night, making the firefight more problematic. the fire is burning mostly dry grass , but several structures are being threatened. you can track the fires burning across the state right now with our abc seven news, wildfire tracker. click on the fire icon to learn the latest on each fire, including acres, burn and containment. you can find it at abc seven news.com/fire map. now to the tropical storm we are watching. >> alberto made landfall in mexico this morning. but gloria, the effects are already being felt here in the u.s. they are kumasi alberto is being blamed for at least three deaths in mexico this morning. >> and in texas, people are bracing for flooding and mudslides. some areas will see up to a foot of rain by the time the storm is over. >> definitely worse than i expected or i'd have been gone, you know? so, i should have been

more prepared. >> other parts of the country are also dealing with severe weather in the form of heat. boston breaking its 100 year heat record with a high of 98 degrees. new york city activated its heat emergency plan for the first time this year, opening more cooling centers. reggie. >> thanks, gloria. if it seems like people are getting covid again around where you are, it's not just your imagination. the chronicle just spoke with ucsf infectious disease expert doctor peter chin-hong. he says a summer swell is happening like clockwork. it's due to a new variant known as flirt. doctor chin-hong says. we tend to see a surge in covid cases every six months as people's immunity begins to wane and the virus evolves to evade vaccines. >> new at six san francisco police are testing a new strategy to stop organized retail theft being one step ahead by hiding in the store. according to our media partners at the sf standard, the police

will conduct a cultural resource report to look at those claims. earlier this month, the state supreme court ruled the university can move forward with construction. berkeley will fund part of the project, which includes 100 beds for unhoused residents and two acres of the site. about 60% will remain open space. >> new developments on that massive lumber yard fire in oakland last month. firefighters say the flames started in an area of the building that housed heavy machinery and charging equipment, according to the chronicle. investigators haven't determined the item that started the fire at economy lumber on may 26th, but it originated near power outlets, battery chargers, saws and forklifts. economy lumber says it's operating normal business hours, and its suppliers have restocked many items that were lost in the flames. >> women who work for snapchat sometime in the past ten years may be owed some money. the santa monica based company has just agreed to pay $15 million
