>> check out the crowd that's rallying. they're using today's events to bolster their case. >> to recall shengtao, it is time to let people with good leadership run oakland. >> nobody should live in oakland under these horrible circumstances. >> good evening. thank you for joining us. >> i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. we broke the news this morning and we've been covering everything that has unfolded over the past 12 hours. this story has been developing all day and all over oakland. before dawn, fbi agents raided the maiden lane home of mayor shengtao. other agents, including from the irs, raided the embarcadero offices of california waste solutions. the fbi also raided two homes on view crest court and skyline boulevard, linked to the duong family, which runs california waste solutions, a major garbage vendor. we have team coverage from reporters spread out throughout oakland to help you understand the possible link between all of these people and places, abc7 news reporter

cornell bernard is at oakland city hall, where the council is meeting right now to discuss the political reaction to all of this. >> abc seven news reporter anser hassan joins us live with a focus on the duong family, a talking trash and the power and the money that goes with it. but let's get started here with abc seven news i-team reporter dan noyes. >> yes. he joins us here in studio to explain what we know so far. >> dan well, amna and dan the fbi confirmed only that they carried out quote a court authorized law enforcement activity at the mayor's home. but that was not the only stop for agents today. more than a dozen fbi agents emerged from oakland mayor sheng tao's house after four hours. inside, they carried boxes, plastic tubs and trash bags and left without comment. witnesses heard a ruckus before 6 a.m. today. >> about 6:00 this morning, i heard a male voice yelling to open the door. open the door! >> nina medina happened to be staying in the neighborhood with friends. she's president of the

national latino peace officers association here for a meeting with the new oakland police chief. >> the federal government doesn't force or obtain warrants into one's residence without a probable cause. and when it rises, in my experience, to the level of the federal government, you're talking about some significant, issues. >> once the fbi left, i went to tao's door to check reports that had been kicked in or rammed through. there was no damage to the door or cell. later, mayor tao's partner and father of her two children, andre jones, emerged with a bag and refused to comment before he left. law enforcement sources tell me this is a public corruption case with the fbi, irs and us postal service working together. agents hit several locations, including the offices of california waste solutions. we spotted irs investigators there and saw these agents leaving with boxes of evidence late in the day. the company was started by david and victor duong, who were under

investigation by the public ethics commission for funneling money through straw donors to council members, a story first reported by oaklandside in 2020. xiang tao allegedly received some of that money. she also traveled with the duong brothers, who funded the trade mission to vietnam last summer. all this in a week with her recall being approved for a vote. >> oakland is in crisis. the mayor's office is in crisis. >> sam singer has guided political campaigns and corporations through various types of crisis. he says the future does not look bright. >> in the last 24 hours, 40,000 voters turned in signatures to have the mayor recalled. this morning, she wakes up and the fbi is knocking her door down. i don't see how she overcomes this . it's likely that she will wind up having to resign. >> it has been a tough week for the mayor. with that recall being approved for a vote. we reached out to her office and have not received any sort of comment. she canceled an appearance at a news conference this morning. it will be interesting to see when and how she makes her first appearance

in public. facing this investigation. ummah. >> all right, dan, thank you so much for a look at that insight. now, our team has been trying to hear from the city about everything that happened today. new at six abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has reaction from an oakland city council member. >> andre, do you have anything to say? >> mayor shang tao's partner, andre jones, had nothing to say as he left oakland city hall thursday following a raid by federal agents at the oakland home they share and other locations, the news sending shock waves through the halls of oakland city hall, where we were told the mayor's office was temporarily closed for the day. the doors to mayor tao's office were locked. oakland city council member carol fife had this to say following a closed door council session. what our next steps regarding the mayor and her and her alleged involvement in this federal raid. >> thank you for saying alleged. we don't know what's going on. this is not something that the council was briefed on that the

oakland police department told us about. i don't think that they were involved. so i have very little to say because we have very little information. vice mayor rebecca kaplan addressing the rumor her home was also raided, posting on x. >> nope. not true. the campaign to recall mayor tao is demanding that she resign immediately due to the fbi raid. in a statement, the campaign said while the fbi raid does not prove her guilt in the ongoing investigation, we already have multiple smoking guns indicating tao's lack of fitness for public office. oakland chinatown community leader carl chan is upset to hear about the fbi raid, and worries it pulls focus from more pressing issues facing the city. >> i always suggesting and telling, you know, many elected officials when you're serving as a public servant, you have to be very, extremely careful how you are dealing with, the public trust. >> we made several attempts to reach out to mayor tao and her staff, but no response. today in oakland. cornel bernard, abc seven news. >> federal agents raided several

other homes today, including two linked to the duong family, owners of california waste solutions. abc seven news reporter anser hassan joins us live from skyline boulevard and a home there. he's been there all day gathering information about who lives there. answer >> yeah, jen. good afternoon. good evening. the investigation here ended more than an hour ago . we saw investigators leave with at least 10 to 15 boxes. three computers. they wouldn't tell us what they found, but we do know that us postal inspectors are often involved in financial fraud investigations. just after 4:30 p.m, us postal inspectors wrapped up their investigation at david wong's home in the oakland hills. no comment on the content of the evidence they found, but it did end an almost ten hour investigation. >> i think anyone who's been around oakland politics for a while knows about the duong family. they're very involved. they're prolific donators to candidates who run for council,

who run for mayor. alameda county officials as well. >> justin burton served in former oakland mayor libby schaaf. s office and worked with then city council member sheng tao. he's concerned about a business trip she took as mayor to vietnam, which he says was paid for by the duong family. burton says that may have been a political risk. >> the people who are impacted most by today's news are oakland's residents. they need to know that their mayor is not at the center of a federal public corruption scandal. and if she is part of this investigation and we don't know all the facts right now, she needs to let her residents know that she's not going to be distracted. and this is a matter amongst attorneys. >> earlier in the day, the fbi raided the home of duong son, andy, who lives a few miles away. >> i started hearing uh, this is the fbi. open up. come out with your hands up. >> this neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, said she heard fbi agents saying they were delivering a federal warrant. around 11 a.m, the fbi inspected a mercedes benz registered to andy duong, parked

outside of his house. 20 minutes later, an unidentified couple was seen leaving in that suv investigators say no one has been home all day and that no arrests have been made. it is still very early in this investigation. officials say it could be a few days before they have an update reporting live anser hassan abc seven news. >> all right. answer. thank you. >> and abc seven news insider phil matier joins us now live in studio. phil, you were out there this morning when the raids first began and the fbi raided the home office of a major recycler that does business in oakland, the mayor's home. what is this all about? >> well, if we take a look at the initials involved, the fbi, the irs and the us postal service that points in the direction of financial questions. we're not talking about guns. we're not talking about drugs. we're talking about that sort of situation. it's not unusual. we have a company here that is doing business with the city. they have an exclusive contract for the curbside recycling. it was given to them

under a bit of controversy. years and years ago. there have since been questions raised as dan noyes put out recently in our earlier in the broadcast. what we have here is a relationship questions between the mayor and this company. will we get quick answers? likely not . that's not the way the feds move. the feds move slowly and methodically, but in this case, rather publicly showing up at the mayor's door at 5:00 in the morning is sending a message pretty loud and clear. >> let's talk about sending a message just yesterday. we're talking about how the effort to recall mayor shengtao when another step yesterday calling for her to just resign. right how is this going to affect that effort? they're going they were already at her house today. >> that's a decision the mayor is going to have to make. that's that's she has to take a look at the entire situation. >> this will only add fuel to the fire. >> absolutely. it. what it does is no matter what the outcome of this innocence or whatever, you are innocent in the eyes of the law. until proven guilty. but in the court of public opinion, if

the fbi shows up at your door, a cloud descends upon you and between now and when she's facing that recall election, this is not going to be resolved. she is going to be constantly under investigation whether anything happens or not. and the feds showed that they did this much the same in san francisco. we just finished up a couple of years of corruption investigations, scandals and convictions that included uh- people at department heads having questionable relationships with companies that the city had contracts with. so here we go again. whether if you're cleared, it's not going to be in the next. it's not going to be any time soon. >> what does it mean for the city of oakland? because city hall was raided, too. >> this is this is it's very bad timing for the city of oakland. we had the mass shooting yesterday in oakland, ongoing problems with crime. we have a budget deficit that is looming that is quite large. there are a number of areas where oakland really needs leadership and decisive action, and this is just going to further cloud it. and it's not just oakland. also,

in so many ways. willie mays, who passed away earlier this week. as you know, baseball fans are at oracle park right now where the center field scoreboard is showing the giants game against the saint louis cardinals. the game is being played at rickwood field in mays's hometown of birmingham, alabama. fans paid their respects, many writing personal messages on the condolence book. >> i always had a smile on his face, you know, just always played the game the right way. it's just, you know, just thinking back all all the things that he did for this organization and things like that, for the community. >> willie mays was coming to town and, you know, for a ten year old boy in the 50s and 60s. willie was the bomb. >> a lot of fans told us that the say, hey, kid may be

physically gone from this world, but his spirit and legacy will always, always be present at the ballpark. and that is no doubt true. and now let's go live to abc seven sports anchor chris alvarez. >> yeah, he flew to alabama. he's in birmingham at rickwood field for that game. hi, chris. and hi dan. >> and i'm it's so touching to see the tributes back home for willie mays. you wouldn't expect anything less from giants fans and out here in alabama in his hometown of birmingham. just a great, amazing tribute to him and the leagues here for a game that major league baseball has been planning for over a year. and willie mays is definitely watching from the heavens above. i've been to some great events in my sports career. this is right near the top. i mean, this place is a living, breathing museum. rick whitfield it's the oldest park in all of america. that's where we are today. and it feels like we're walking back in time in the best way possible. they brought willie's hall of fame plaque from cooperstown, flew down here to alabama. major league baseball, as i mentioned, made this a mission to make a special

dedication to the history of the leagues. leagues? excuse me if you didn't know. now, you know willie's presence is felt everywhere before first pitch tonight. reflections on the life and legacy of the one and only. say hey, kid. >> knowing willie, you know, in the time that i spent around him, he just want uh- us to celebrate and just to be happy and not to be sad. >> he was always in a great mood. he was always bringing joy to people and obviously sad that, you know, he's not with us anymore. but it feels good and feels right to be down here celebrating his life have become, you know, full circle that mlb is back at rickwood with the giants uh- willie's team. >> you couldn't have written it better if you were a screenwriter. >> there's no accident that there's a game here. this is something that willie really cared about, and it's a full circle moment. >> i believe that it was for a reason so that he could be here spiritually and he could be here with us, and he wasn't going to be able to make it otherwise. so as much as it hurts to lose a legend like that, you know, we

gained an angel and a saint above us to be here for this series. so it it is very, very special. and i think everybody here feels that. >> very profound words from willie. everyone especially mike yastrzemski there. earlier today, we stopped by a giant mural of mays in downtown birmingham. the locals tell me that's been a blank wall downtown for so long. and now a beautiful tribute to their hometown hero, i'll tell you that. also was something to see if you're a baseball fan and you want to come out and see where willie's from at some point, i suggest you at least go there and if you have a chance to come here. rickwood field, also an amazing place to be. larry will have more coming up in sports, and i'll have a report coming up at 11 to see how this game wraps up between the giants and the cardinals. for now, we'll send it back to san francisco. chris, if you're a baseball fan, even if you're not, what a magical place to be with so many of the greats of the game. >> all coming to alabama just to

honor willie mays amazing. >> yeah. dan. yeah, you're absolutely right. there's a who's who of baseball from the major leagues to the leagues and just the fans and the spirit. there's just something special about tonight. and i hear some some music playing. it just kind of everything is going together. it feels like almost a spiritual experience, especially if you're a baseball fan. that's what it feels like tonight. here in alabama. and willie would be proud to see what's going on down here, guys. >> all right, chris alvarez, thank you so much. >> i can only imagine what you know. wow. all right. moving. all right. let's talk about the weather forecast. summer has officially arrived. >> that's right. let's get to meteorologist andy patel because the weekend's pretty close to sandy. yeah, and so is the heat. >> let me show you a live picture right now from our oakland airport. camera where you can see the marine layer is rushing in. this is part of the reason why those temperatures were 4 to 9 degrees below average. today. only in the mid 50s to mid 80s. if you are stepping out this evening. inland areas in the 70s at 7 p.m, you will notice temperatures dropping quickly down to the 60s around the bay.

partly cloudy, upper 50s and then eventually down to the mid 50s. late tonight along the coastline. this is where the coolest spots will be. it's already cloudy and you go from the mid 50s to the low 50s. as you look at live doppler seven, the fog and the clouds never quite completely cleared the entire coast. still hanging around tonight and already pushed over the bay from our pier 39 camera. you can see there's a lot of cloud cover right now. mid to upper 50s. from san francisco to oakland. it is 69, in san jose and 73 in redwood city. from our kgo roof camera, we have a little bit of a breeze along the embarcadero. the clouds are stacked up 72 santa rosa, 70 is 65. excuse me. in napa it is 80, in concord, and 72 in livermore. so here's a look at the air quality advisory that remains up today. the air district says that air quality will continue to be impacted in the north bay from the colusa county fire, so keep that in mind. now when we look at tomorrow and saturday, most areas will be in the moderate category for air quality. as you

look right now from purple air, there are some pockets of moderate air quality already. and looking at air now, good to moderate down near the surface. here's a look at the smoke forecast. and now we're expecting a little bit of lingering haze and smoke for parts of the north bay. but you'll notice as we head into tomorrow not much left. there might be just a little hint from golden gate bridge camera. it is socked in overnight tonight. foggy areas, patchy drizzle tomorrow, getting hot inland and on saturday a heat advisory will go up for parts of the bay area. your morning temperatures will start off in the 50s. watch out for the drizzle, it will be spotty. watch out for the fog as we head into the afternoon hours. we're going to have that summer heat inland to 91 in the south bay and morgan hill and gilroy, 88, in san jose, 85. santa clara on the peninsula, 78 in palo alto, 61 pacifica. you will still have some fog hanging around near the coast. 68 in san francisco, 63 daly city, north bay numbers 86, in san rafael, up to 92 in santa rosa in the

east bay, coming up, 76 in oakland, 83 in fremont, inland areas. this is where it's going to feel like summer 93 fairfield, livermore. as we take a look at saturday, this is when that heat advisory will go up for inland areas, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. saturday. and that is just something you'll want to keep in mind as heat illnesses are possible in those areas. the accuweather seven day forecast. we have the summer heat the next two days hottest day is saturday with those triple digits inland low 60s coast cooling does begin on sunday and you will really notice the drop off in the temperatures on monday as well before they come up just slightly. no extreme heat expected, just that one day of triple digits. ama and dan. >> all right, we can handle that. yes. thanks, andrea. >> well, how do you determine who gets which podium at the upcoming presidential debate? you flip a coin. no kidding. the results are next. >> and the next game in the stanley cup final is tomorrow, right here on abc seven. see if the florida panthers can close it out against the edmonton

on wall street. shares of chevron and salesforce led the increase in the dow. it rose almost 300 points. the nasdaq dropped 140 points as market bellwether nvidia retreated. the

s&p 500 hit the 5500 mark for the first time ever before closing down almost 14 points. today's drop ended the nasdaq streak of seven record closing highs. we're exactly one week away from the first presidential debate between joe biden and donald trump. >> you'll be able to watch it live here on abc, and it's historic. the first presidential debate between an incumbent and a former president. a coin flip determined some of the debate logistics. the coin landed on tails, which was the biden campaign pick. that means his campaign got to choose between the podium position or the order of closing statements. biden's campaign chose the right podium position. trump's campaign then chose to deliver the last closing statement. live coverage of the debate begins at 5 p.m. next thursday. the debate itself gets going at 6 p.m. abc news will help break it down afterward with discussion among their experts, then stay with us for wheel of fortune and jeopardy! and a special edition

making sure that your family members will not be directly benefited because of your position. >> federal agents were also at the homes and offices of the duong family, who run california waste solutions. mayor tao traveled to vietnam last summer with the duong family on a trade mission to vietnam. >> the duong family's business, california waste solutions, just released this statement. it reads. california waste solutions is fully aware that federal agents executed search warrants at a number of locations in oakland and related to aws. the company is fully cooperating with the government's investigation and is confident that government officials will conclude that aws was not involved in any unlawful or improper activities. >> now, all of this happening as oakland is dealing with one of the biggest shootings in the city's history. >> at least 15 people were hurt when several people fired shots as a juneteenth celebration was

wrapping up last night near lake merritt, abc seven news reporter luz pena questioned the police chief this afternoon about the security at the event. >> in a matter of minutes, a juneteenth celebration turned chaotic at oakland's lake merritt, with at least 15 people shot this video from an anonymous source captured hundreds of people running to take cover. we have everything from minor gunshot or flesh wounds to loss of fingers to some of the individuals still being in critical condition, oakland police chief floyd mitchell confirmed there were multiple shooters in the crowd. according to officers, the chaos erupted following a sideshow and fights that broke out after a group climbed over the roof of a moving vehicle. >> fortunately, these fights escalated into multiple people discharging firearms with more than 50 shell casings being recovered at that location. we found several bullet holes in a car that was parked on grand avenue. >> this business owner said there was a lack of police presence in the area before the

violence, and as everything took place last night and got out of control, there was one police car right there at the corner of euclid and grand. >> oakland police claimed they had 30 officers on scene. it was their responsibility of what took place last night. >> we questioned them on their response. >> who said you did have officers on scene yet? >> i saw a video of the incident and it looked really chaotic. i didn't see any police officers in that specific area. i mean, where were police officers? you said there were 30. where were they? >> so 30? you got to understand that the lakes are fairly significant, large footprint within that area. the chief pushed back and said this was not the only priority. >> wednesday night. >> say you were stretched thin because there were so much going on last night in oakland that you couldn't actually respond specifically to what was going on at lake merritt. >> no, i wouldn't say that. i'll jump in. no, no, we had people there. but you have to understand, this is a large city, almost 500,000 people. we had officers there on special detail to provide a high visibility there. we also had a

shooting incident that the chief beard just talked about. we also responded to a homicide that occurred just earlier. >> prior to that, one person was arrested for assaulting a police officer. yet no arrests have been made in connection to the shootings in oakland. luz pena abc seven news. >> when it comes to crime, where you live, check out the abc seven neighborhood safety tracker. see crime stats and trends for oakland, san francisco and san jose. you'll find it at abc seven news.com. new at six an alameda county firefighter headed home today to continue recovering from burns he suffered fighting the corral fire. >> the department shared this moment of brandon franco leaving santa clara valley medical center this morning. he underwent multiple skin graft surgeries for burns to the left side of his body and face. franco has been with the department for 22 years. the corral fire near tracy burned 40,000 acres at the start of this month, and it's good to see him on the mend. all right, here's a live look at the air

quality in the east bay. we have an air quality advisory in effect right now, but there are no advisories or alerts for tomorrow. smoke from the nearby sites. fire is impacting sonoma, napa and solano county. that's why you see so much haze in the sky around here. four of the state's biggest fires right now are in northern california. you can see them on our abc seven news fire map. the largest, the sites fire in colusa county has burned 19,000 acres. it's only 15% contained. the point fire near lake sonoma is now 70% contained. so pretty good progress there. and you can access this map any time it's on our website. abc seven news.com/fire map at&t won't be able to get rid of landlines today. >> the california public utilities commission rejected a proposal by at&t to stop providing landline service in most of the state. a judge previously ruled that internet based phone and cell service was not always reliable, and that at&t was obligated to keep offering landline service as a carrier of last resort. a three

bedroom home in san francisco is up for sale for a steal. located just off bay street in the russian hill neighborhood, it's listed for less than half $1 million. but there is a catch you may not be able to move in for 30 years. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn explains this unusual listing. >> it's a one of a kind listing in russian hill that drew a long line of prospective buyers last week my husband came in and said, you've got to look out the window and there was a line from the house all the way to the middle of the block right here, this 1100 square foot home at 30 northview court in san francisco has three bedrooms and two baths, and it's for sale for about half $1 million. that price tag is definitely raising eyebrows among neighbors like isla smith, selling for $488,000. >> i don't i don't know what to make of it. >> it all came as a big surprise to all of us here on the street, the listing posted on zillow

says the home is tenant occupied and to be sold as is. >> the buyer won't be able to move in until 2053. that's another 30 years. >> the new owner would have to buy the house subject to a very long rental lease that is currently being offered to an individual, according to the listing. >> the current tenant will continue to live there and pay the same amount of rent every month. the current tenant pays $417 a month for rent. we went to the offices of park north real estate, hoping to talk to the two real estate agents listing the property. no one was available to comment. we then talked to an attorney specializing in landlord tenant law. >> for some reason, they gave this person a 30 year right of possession. i've seen that before. it's kind of a sloppy way of estate planning. like i want to leave some security to this person so they don't have to worry about where they're going to live. and they do it that way. i think they should
