evening, i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. we've been following this developing story since early this morning and it spread out all over oakland. here's what we know. tonight, fbi agents raided the mayor's home on maiden lane before dawn. >> other agents, including from the irs, raided the embarcadero offices of california waste solutions, which runs the city's recycling company. two homes on view, crest court and skyline boulevard, were also raided. >> they are connected to the duong family, which runs california waste solutions. we begin our coverage tonight with abc seven news i-team reporter dan noyes. >> more than a dozen fbi agents emerged from oakland mayor sheng tao's house. after four hours inside, they carried boxes, plastic tubs and trash bags and left without comment. witnesses heard a ruckus before 6 a.m. today. about 6:00 this morning, i heard a male voice yelling to open the door, open the door! nina medina happened to be staying in the neighborhood with friends. she's president of the national latino peace officers

association here for a meeting with the new oakland police chief, the federal government doesn't force or obtain warrants into one's residence without probable cause. >> and when it rises, in my experience, to the level of the federal government, you're talking about some significant, issues. >> once the fbi left, i went to tao's door to check reports that had been kicked in or rammed through. there was no damage to the door sill. later mayor tao's partner and father of her two children, andre jones, emerged with a bag and refused to comment before he left. law enforcement sources tell me this is a public corruption case with the fbi, irs and us postal service working together. agents hit several locations, including the offices of california waste solutions. we spotted irs investigators there. the company was started by david and victor duong, who were under investigation by the public ethics commission for funneling money through straw donors to council members, a story first

reported by oaklandside in 2020. xiang tao allegedly received some of that money. she also traveled with the duong brothers, who funded the trade mission to vietnam last summer. dan noyes, abc seven news the duong family's business, california waste solutions, released this statement. >> it reads california waste solutions is fully aware that federal agents executed search warrants at a number of locations in oakland and related to aws. >> it goes on. the company is fully cooperating with the government's investigation and is confident that government officials will conclude that aws was not involved in any unlawful or improper activities. end of the statement. well, it has certainly been a rough 24 hours for the oakland mayor. >> yesterday, the recall petition was allowed to move forward and there was the shooting over by lake merritt. now, the fbi paid a visit to her home. we haven't seen or heard from her so far. >> we have not. an abc seven news reporter, tim johns, is outside her house tonight where

some protesters showed up earlier. tim, what's happening? >> yeah. dan. umma, like you say, even at this hour, we haven't seen or heard anything from oakland mayor shang tao. i've been on the phone, texting, calling her office, various staffers, all of them. radio silence, news of this raid, though, has shocked the oakland community and many members here demanding answers from the missing mayor. >> clean house, clean house protesters gathered outside the home of oakland mayor shang tao thursday afternoon, demanding her resignation after an fbi raid of the house early in the morning. >> while the official cause of the raid is still unknown, sources tell abc seven news it's a political corruption case involving tao and some of her supporters. law enforcement also raiding at least three other spots thursday, including the offices of california waste solutions, a company that was under investigation for funneling money through straw donors to council members. >> i was shocked, just as everybody else outside tao's

house, tuan noh says he thinks the mayor avoiding the public is making matters worse. >> he believes that what oakland needs now more than ever is transparency. >> the mayor should explain to the residents what's going on. she should step out, show leadership and say how she's helping oakland. >> abc seven news reached out to nearly all of the members of the oakland city council thursday. most of them declined to comment or go on camera. we did catch up with council member carol fife, however, as she was leaving a closed door council session in the evening. >> we don't know what's going on. this is not something that the council was briefed on that the oakland police department told us about. i don't think that they were involved. so i have very little to say because we have very little information during the raid, officers were seen carrying out boxes, plastic tubs and trash bags full of items. >> law enforcement expert doctor lisa hill has conducted investigations with federal authorities before. she says the raid is not just a bad look for the struggling city. hill tells me, given that the raid was so

public in nature, she believes the fbi thinks it has a strong case against tao. >> maybe they're not even included. the local, you know, city law enforcement, but they're being kept in the dark. this it has all the looks of a pretty serious situation >> and, dan, umma, i'm told that the fbi's raid here at tao's house lasted about four hours today. i'm live in oakland tonight. tim johns abc seven news. >> all right, tim, thank you for that. and raids also took place in a quiet neighborhood in the hills of oakland. a neighbor who did not want to be identified, said she heard the fbi say they were carrying out a federal warrant. >> and then i started hearing, uh, this is the fbi. open up. come out with your hands up. >> the house belongs to andy duong, who is listed as director at california waste solutions, a recycling company that serves oakland. around 11 a.m, the fbi inspected a mercedes benz parked outside the house. 30 minutes

later, an unidentified couple leaving the house drove off in that vehicle. meanwhile u.s. postal inspectors collected evidence at a nearby house that belongs to david duong, andy's father, who is listed as california waste solutions ceo. >> now, abc seven insider phil matier was there when the raids began early this morning, and he joined us earlier today to talk about the recall effort and what the raid means for the city of oakland. >> no matter what the outcome of this innocence or whatever, you are innocent in the eyes of the law until proven guilty. but in the court of public opinion, if the fbi shows up at your door, a cloud descends upon you, and between now and when she's facing that recall election, this is not going to be resolved . she is going to be constantly under investigation. >> what does it mean for the city of oakland? because city hall was raided, too. >> there are a number of areas where oakland really needs leadership and decisive action. >> and this is just going to further cloud it. it becomes more than political. it becomes actually running the city. i

cannot remember the last time a mayor sitting mayor had their house raided by the fbi >> obviously, this is an ongoing investigation in its early stages. we will continue to stay on it and watch it very closely for you. so stay with abc seven news to learn the latest about what's happening with the mayor and how it will affect the city of oakland. we'll continue to update abc seven news.com and the abc seven bay area app as well. >> the chp determined a shooting near 16th avenue in oakland this evening happened on city streets, not on the freeway. southbound 80 reopened after about an hour of officers searching for shell casings. the incident was called in around 5:20 p.m. all lanes were closed, backing up traffic to west oakland. at least 15 people were shot last night at a juneteenth celebration in oakland, near lake merritt. there were at least 5000 people in attendance. oakland police chief floyd mitchell confirmed there were multiple shooters in the crowd and hundreds of people ran for

cover. officers say the chaos erupted after a sideshow and fights that broke out when a group climbed on the roof of a moving vehicle. >> we have everything from minor gunshot or flesh wounds to loss of fingers to some of the individuals still being in critical condition, there are questions lingering over how many officers were actually on the scene before and after the shooting. >> opd says 30 were there. one person was arrested for assaulting a police officer. no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting in the north bay. >> firefighters continue to make progress on a wildfire in sonoma county. the point fire is just south of lake tahoe. it started on sunday and has burned 1200 acres. firefighters are getting a handle on it, though it is now 70% contained. all evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted. residents returning home may still, though, experience some power outages. containment has improved to 58% on the arrow fire in calaveras county.

>> it's being driven by dry winds and has so far burned 5300 acres east of stockton. there are evacuation orders still in place, but some people were allowed to return to their homes yesterday. the cause of that fire is still being investigated. >> the largest fire burning in the state right now is in colusa county, northeast of clear lake. so far, the cites fire has burned more than 19,000 acres. it's only 20% contained. the fire is burning mostly dry grass, but several structures are being threatened. the blaze has also started several spot fires as well. >> smoke from the fires led to another air quality advisory for today. that's right. >> so what about tomorrow? meteorologist sanjay patel is here with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandra. >> yeah. >> and dan and there is no alert for tomorrow. but keep in mind that things could fluctuate pretty quickly in terms of the air quality right now. let's take a look at a live picture. here's how you're going to begin your morning overcast skies over sfo right now. visibility just over two miles and a half moon bay. something you'll need to

>> the man accused of trying to kill his family by driving off a cliff on highway one will avoid serving major jail time instead, a judge ruled on thursday that the pasadena doctor is eligible for a mental health diversion program, but prosecutors were expecting more accountability. >> we think when we have a violent crime such as this, this wasn't a man thinking about killing his family. he did everything in his power to kill his family. but that, but it does disappoint us. >> in january 2023, dharmesh patel is accused of driving his tesla off devil's slide in pacifica. firefighters were forced to cut his family, including patel's 41 year old wife, seven year old daughter and four year old son. out of the wreckage, it was a drop of 300ft in. first responders said. it was a miracle they all survived. during the investigation, prosecutors said patel's actions were intentional . patel's defense said his actions were due to his mental instability. we spoke with legal

analyst stephen clark. >> it's important to recognize that this is a man that took an oath to save lives, not to kill people, and i think the defense demonstrated that this was completely out of character and never would have happened. but for his mental illness. and they said, look at his prior history. >> patel facing three counts of attempted murder, had support from his wife, who vouched for him. >> the fact that his family came forward and said, give him a second chance. this may not have happened if his wife had come to court and said he needs to go to jail, district attorney steve wagstaffe said. >> patel will be released from custody in about three weeks. he will undergo treatment for the next two years while he lives at his parents home in belmont. >> the legislature says we want to look at treatment programs instead of incarceration. the question will be, does doctor patel follow through with his treatment program? >> the judge stated that after review of all the evidence, patel's mental illness was major

depressive disorder. there will be a hearing on july first to work out the details in the south bay, lauren martinez, abc seven news. calif voters will not have the opportunity to check state and local tax hikes at the polls. >> the california supreme court has removed a measure from the november ballot that would have made it harder to raise taxes. in a rare step, the court ruled the change would upend the way government works. more than 1 million people signed a petition supporting a ballot measure requiring voters to approve any tax increase passed by the state legislature, where it would have also required two thirds of voters to approve local tax increases. instead of a simple majority to nights. >> we continue to remember the late, great willie mays. the giants legend passed away earlier this week. as you know, many baseball fans spent the day at oracle park, where the center field scoreboard showed the giants game against the saint louis cardinals. it was being played at rickwood field in mays hometown of birmingham, alabama. fans paid their respects, many

writing personal messages in the condolence books always had a smile on his face, you know, just always played the game the right way. >> it's just, you know, just thinking back all the all the things that he did for this organization and things like that, for the community. >> willie mays was coming to town and, you know, for a ten year old boy in the 50s and 60s, willie was the bomb. >> fans say the say, hey, kid may physically be gone from this world, but his spirit and legacy will always be present at the ballpark. >> meanwhile, across the country in birmingham, alabama, a celebration of both willie mays and the leagues in tonight's game between the giants and cardinals. abc seven's chris alvarez has more on a day that will be long remembered beyond the final score. >> well, what a wild 48 hours it has been since we learned the passing of willie mays. initially the shock, sadness and sorrow of losing a hall of fame person and player on the field.

air quality right now. now we don't have an air quality advisory tomorrow. there was one up today because of that smoke. but you will notice in the upper parts of the atmosphere we will continue to see some smoke and haze as we head towards tomorrow morning and then becoming less pronounced tomorrow evening on live doppler seven. we've got a pretty good push of the marine layer. it is about 2000ft deep, so it's made its way across many parts of the bay area tonight. temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. unless you get above the marine inversion. claire lake 72 degrees. here's the view from our emeryville camera. and that's how you're going to start out the day. gray skies overnight tonight. fog and patchy drizzle tomorrow. getting hot inland and saturday we do have a heat advisory that goes up for some of our inland areas. here it is. so it's the mountains and the valleys in our interior portions. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. saturday. there is a risk of heat related illnesses, so take precautions as you go about your weekend plans. the risk is going to be in the moderate category for inland areas,

indicated by the orange colors there. minimal along the coast, but something to keep in mind as this heat is coming a little earlier than we would expect. tomorrow morning. it's going to be a drizzly gray start, temperatures starting off in the 50s. a few 40s out there, and then by noontime, inland areas are already in the 80s. but notice the fog is sitting there. most of the day. like today, inland temperatures will get up into the 90s tomorrow. your morning numbers will range from the 40s to the 50s once again, watch out for that fog and some spotty drizzle tomorrow afternoon, 94 degrees in antioch getting you up to 88. in san jose 76, oakland 87, napa 86. in san rafael, 92 in santa rosa and 68 in san francisco. today's high temperatures were below average. but that's going to change beginning tomorrow. here's your accuweather seven day forecast. the summer heat is with us tomorrow. mid 90s inland triple digits inland by saturday. but the good news is of course with our summer microclimates, you'll have a place to go to escape the heat.
