>> and the world's tallest teenager set to take college basketball by storm at seven foot nine and still growing. >> from abc news this is america this morning. >> good friday morning everyone. i'm lionel moise in for andrew i'm andrea fujii in for rhiannon. >> we'll get to the extreme heat across much of the country in just a moment. but we begin with yet another scare for airline passengers. >> yeah, we've reported on multiple close calls at major airports in recent months, but in this case, the close call was over the suburbs of oklahoma city. the faa is investigating another concerning incident on a southwest airlines flight after a plane appeared to come dangerously close to homes near oklahoma city for some reason, they blew through an assigned altitude and continued and got very close to the ground. the boeing 737, which took off from las vegas tuesday night, was descending into oklahoma city's airport just after midnight when it dropped as low as 525ft over

the city of yukon, passing just over a high school. a low altitude alarm alerted air traffic control, which contacted the cockpit. >> 4069 low altitude alert. you got out there. >> the air traffic controller in the tower saved the day by telling them, check your altitude. the plane landed safely, but local residents flooded social media, saying they thought the plane was going to hit their homes. it was night. it was late. perhaps the crew was tired. they were descending over the prairie so there was no lights. there were no visual reference. it was essentially descending over a black hole. they were given clearance for a visual approach, so they were looking out at the lights of oklahoma city looking for the airport. and for some reason, they missed that assigned altitude. perhaps it was distraction in the cockpit. >> earlier this week, it was revealed a southwest plane from hawaii came within just 400ft of slamming into the ocean. back in april, a memo saying a newer first officer accidentally

pushed forward the control column. as for the incident over oklahoma city, southwest says it is in contact with the faa to address any irregularities. >> breaking overnight, amtrak says two train lines between newark, new jersey, and new york city are canceled until further notice due to an equipment failure that will surely take a toll on today's commute. during the extreme heat, service has been restored along the rest of the northeast corridor after yesterday's power failure, which shut down service. meanwhile metro operators in the washington, d.c. area had to slow down. their trains concern the extreme heat would expand the rails and no relief. today, highs could hit 96 in parts of the northeast, and we're expecting mostly 90 degree readings across the midwest. parts of the upper midwest are dealing with extreme flooding, including minnesota, and more storms are expected today. we'll check your forecast in just a few moments. >> now to politics and new details on next week's presidential debate. both president biden and former president trump also reported new fundraising numbers

overnight. right. abc's em nguyen has all those details. good morning. m lionel. >> good morning. yeah. new poll shows the race is still very tight. but when it comes to fundraising in recent weeks, the numbers just aren't even close. >> this morning, former president trump and the rnc appeared to have out fund raised president biden's campaign for a second consecutive month. the biden's campaign and the dnc revealing they brought in $85 million last month, far short of the 141 million raised by trump's political operation. this is a scam. >> i think it's a terrible thing that's happening to our democracy, possibly reflecting a surge in support for trump after his felony conviction. >> but overnight, word that biden is getting a boost from former new york city mayor michael bloomberg, a source saying the billionaire is donating $20 million to biden. and now attention focuses on next thursday's debate. trump after months of describing biden

as weak and mentally unfit, is now raising expectations for biden's performance, saying this on a podcast yesterday, i assume he's going to be somebody that will be a worthy debater. >> yeah, i would say, i think i don't want to underestimate him. >> trump also spoke about the economy, foreign policy and immigration, saying he wants to automatically grant green cards to college graduates. meanwhile, biden's debate prep at camp david is being led by his former chief of staff. biden will reportedly focus on trump's, quote, extreme record and is expected to attack trump's stance on reproductive rights. a new fox news poll shows biden leading trump by two points, 50 to 48. trump, responding on social media, writing fox news polls are always the worst for me. they have been from the beginning and always will be. as for next week's debate, biden won a coin toss and got to choose where he'll stand. he chose the podium on the right now. trump got to pick the order of closing statements and he

chose to have the last word. >> andrea m thank you. in houston, two men are under arrest, accused of strangling a 12 year old girl, jocelyn nungesser's body was found in a creek monday. police say she had sneaked out of her home and was seen on surveillance video meeting up with the suspects, but it's not clear if she knew them. the men are in their 20s. reportedly, migrants from venezuela each now facing a capital murder charge. >> tensions are escalating on the korean peninsula after vladimir putin's visit as south korea's military fires more warning shots. the shots were to repel north korean soldiers who briefly crossed the border for the third time this month. south korea has also summoned the russian ambassador to protest the new military deal putin signed with kim jong un, social media companies are fighting back after a week of reckoning. >> everyone from the nation's top doctor to congress to a major school district and governor are looking to crack down on the industry and its impact on children. this morning

, a new push to protect kids using social media. >> we know that we've already lost too many kids or kids that are spiraling for a long time now. >> new york's governor signing a bill to restrict social media use by minors under the law, people under 18 will only be allowed to see posts from accounts they follow rather than content suggested by an algorithm. and platforms can't send minors notifications between midnight and 6 a.m. the restrictions can be turned off with parental consent, but an industry group calls the law an assault on free speech. the law's passage comes the same day the wall street journal reported that instagram is recommending videos sexual in nature to kids as young as 13. the report is based on accounts set up by testers. meta, dismissing the report as an artificial experiment that doesn't match the reality of how teens use instagram. earlier this week, the u.s. surgeon general called for social media platforms to display health warnings similar to tobacco products. amy neville
