the investigation. >> good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. we're still waiting to hear from the fbi about why agents showed up at the mayor's home on maiden lane in oakland before dawn on thursday. other agents, including from the irs, raided the embarcadero offices of california waste solutions, which runs the city's recycling company. >> two homes on view, crest court and skyline boulevard, were also raided. they are connected to the duong family, which runs california waste solutions. this is a live look at the mayor's house now. we still haven't seen her since all of this went down. >> her attorney, however, is talking and says she is cooperating with this investigation and is not the target. we'll begin our coverage tonight of this developing story with abc seven news reporter anser hassan. >> it's really unfortunate that a search warrant was executed at her residence because the public appearance of that brings up images of corruption. and i can tell you, i have spoken to the u.s. attorney's office and i

have no information that she's a target right now. >> tony brass, a former federal prosecutor and criminal defense attorney, is now the lawyer representing oakland mayor shang tao in a federal investigation. early thursday morning, more than a dozen fbi agents raided mayor tao's home in oakland. four hours later, they hauled off boxes and bags of evidence. brass points out the warrants were for the address where tao li's not for mayor tao. >> specifically, it suggests that the information that they wanted, whether that information itself suggests criminality or is simply something that corroborates other information, was located there or on a device. >> the feds also targeted two homes related to the duong family. they own california waste solutions, a garbage recycling company that operates in the east bay and south bay. the dong's are also huge political donors, but the fact that it's our mayor, it's someone who's in leadership that who, you know, ousted the police chief. nina joyner is a small business owner in oakland. she says tao is innocent until proven guilty, but her concern

is how this will play out in the court of public opinion, especially as mayor tao is facing a recall in november. joyner is part of a growing chorus of people asking the mayor to resign. she believes mayor tao's personal issues are distractions that hurt oakland's reputation to attract talent and investments. >> we just had a shooting and we just got a we just got a chief of police and for this event to happen, we can't even have our mayor come out. we couldn't have her come out and talk about it. this is this is this is unheard of. >> attorney brass wants to emphasize that mayor tao was not arrested and that there's no restrictions on her ability to perform her duties as mayor. legal experts tell us this investigation could drag on months, if not longer, in oakland, anser hassan abc seven news. now in the days since the raids, we've been getting new information about the political corruption investigation from someone interviewed by the fbi, the mayor's former chief of

staff, she spoke with the i-team's dan noyes. >> not only did i run her office, i was very instrumental in helping run her campaign. >> renee webb tells me. she served as chief of staff for shengtao for a year and a half, and that she questioned the amount of money andy duong was funneling to the campaign. webb says she shared her concerns with the fbi in a meeting february 3rd of last year. she gave me texts and emails from the fbi that confirmed the meeting and just the line of questioning i could tell that they had already been looking into, you know, some of their kind of pay to play type of activities. oh, really? what sorts of things were they saying in terms of the questions about pay to play, just about board appointments, about contracts, about andy, you know, about the duong family. >> webb says she knew thursday's raid by the fbi was coming. we spotted andy duong leaving his house and his name on evidence boxes that the irs agents carried out of the duong family

business, california waste solutions, the lead investigator from the oakland public ethics commission, confirms to me that the duong's are still under investigation for a money laundering scheme, court documents i've received alleged that andy duong arranged contributions to candidates including shengtao, using straw donors. some of the phony donors allegedly came from phuc tran, president of the vietnamese chamber of commerce. in response , phuc tran said he wouldn't cooperate in the investigation. based on his fifth amendment right to be free from being compelled to incriminate himself. webb tells me the end for her as chief of staff came on the day tao was sworn in, and that the mayor's partner, andre jones, tried to bring his ex-wife into the ceremony. >> and finally, i was like, andre, i don't know what's wrong with you, but you got to get the hell out of here. i was like, this is too much. i don't know what's going on. shang was all crying. she was like, why would you do this to me on my day? like, this is crazy. >> webb tells me she texted

shengtao during the raid to say she's praying for the mayor. >> she has a good heart and she came in this wanting to do it. but sometimes that power and that machine just takes people to another level in the wrong direction. yeah, the way, wrong direction. and we're all paying the consequence for it. >> webb also tells me that andre jones, who doesn't work for the mayor's office, was trying to arrange jobs for her supporters for the i-team. dan noyes, abc seven news. >> this is clearly an ongoing investigation, and we're going to stay on it very closely. so stay with abc seven news to learn the latest about what's happening with the mayor and how it will affect the city of oakland. we'll continue to update abc seven news.com and the abc seven bay area app as well. >> david depape broke into nancy pelosi's house looking for her only her husband, paul, was home as police responded to pap struck paul pelosi with a hammer, leaving him with a fractured skull. depape faced both federal and state charges, and now he's been convicted by

juries in each case. abc seven news reporter tim johns has been following today's ruling for us. he's live here now in studio with reaction. tim. >> yeah. ama depape was convicted by the jury of all five counts today. some of them, including aggravated kidnaping, false imprisonment of an elder and threatening the family member of a public official. now, earlier today, i caught up with both the prosecution and the defense in this case to get their reaction. after several days of deliberation, a san francisco jury found david depape guilty on all charges in his state trial over the hammer attack against paul pelosi in the hallway of the courthouse to papst public defender adam lipson, saying both he and depape were disappointed by the jury's decision. he tells abc seven news he took particular issue with the prosecution, adding an aggravated kidnaping charge. >> it's really unfortunate it was charged this way. it was sort of a textbook vindictive prosecution. as soon as they found out that the case was that the attempted murder charge was going to be dismissed, they added this charge, an accusation

that san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins denied. >> jenkins, speaking to the press following friday's verdict at her office that was dealt with by the court. >> we have charged mr. we charged mr. depape with what he was guilty of, as clear by the jury's verdict. >> according to california law, the kidnaping charge carries a life sentence without the possibility of parole. all of this coming after depape was sentenced last month to 30 years in prison in his federal case after he serves his 30 years in federal custody, he will be at the age of 75. >> instead of being deported back to canada, he will be brought back to california to spend the end of his life in a california prison. >> legal analyst stephen clark says despite lipson's objections to the outcome, he wasn't surprised by the jury's verdict. friday afternoon. >> and i think what the message was today is that mr. depape is extremely dangerous to society, and there's no safe place for him other than state prison.

>> depapes lawyer says he will appeal the verdict, a move clark believes won't make much of a difference. >> that video evidence and his statements to the police are so damaging that it's hard to say that any jury would have come to a different conclusion. >> now, as for the sentencing in this state trial that will be scheduled for a later date, i'm live in the studio tonight. tim jones, abc seven news. >> all right, tim, thank you. new at 11. one person is dead in san francisco after a shooting near the civic center. officers were called out to mission and ninth streets around 7 p.m, where they found the victim. police did find and detain a possible suspect in the north bay. >> the point fire is still burning just south of lake sonoma. firefighters are making some progress. containment has improved to now 80% and 1200 acres have burned with three homes destroyed. all evacuation orders and warnings have, however, been lifted. and with hot temperatures in mind this weekend, dozens of north bay

firefighters did a controlled burn. that's what you're watching here. they burned 60 acres of tall, dry grass to prevent future fires, and it was a perfect training opportunity for them. with crews knocking down brush by setting backfires and running hose lines. >> so this is an opportunity for us to bring out all of our new firefighters and give them some experience with live fire. >> we're already seeing that the season is starting off strong with wildfires, and so it's important that we get our seasonals comfortable with live fire and in heat. >> a water dropping chopper took part in today's burn all to get ready for the real thing. they say it's important right now with an active start to the wildfire season. >> the largest active wildfire in california right now is the sites fire in colusa county. more than 19,000 acres have burned, with 30% containment. video was released today showing firefighters effort to build a containment line. cal fire says the only active area is in the northern part of the fire, and this weekend's weather could be

a factor because it is expected to heat up again for some parts of the state, including here in the bay area. >> meteorologist sanjay patel is here now with the 24 hour accuweather forecast that also includes a heat advisory. sanjay. >> that's right. and dan and it goes up tomorrow for our inland areas. that heat advisory is 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and what this basically means is these areas shaded in orange, this is where the temperatures will soar high enough to where you could get sick from the heat. so just keep that in mind, especially if you are sensitive. it's going to be minor risk around the coast and parts of the bay. but moderate risk of heat illnesses inland. as you will notice. here's a look at your planner tomorrow morning. it starts off nice and comfortable. fog along the coast and bay temperatures in the 50s. the temperatures will be rising rapidly away from the coastline by noon, and you will notice by 4 p.m. triple digits inland. so it's going to be sizzling there 60s coast side and then cool to warm later on in the evening. i'll be back with the full look at the weekend forecast to let

southern sierra nevada. after years of work by the tule river tribe, a family of beavers has been released into the south fork tule river watershed. it's part of a partnership with the

department of fish and wildlife to introduce the beavers to manage the water supply and better conserve the tribe's drinking water. >> beavers are actually a water supply solution. they slow the water down in a waterway like this. they spread it out and they sink it. >> biologists expect the beavers will also create a better habitat for a number of endangered species. they can be seen in images between 500 and 1000 years old on the reservation. tribal elders say there haven't been any beavers on the reservation for decades. >> amazing story. new at 11 a santa cruz county man is back home tonight after spending ten days in the mountains. he went for a hike, but says he got lost. rescuers finally found him late yesterday. these pictures captured the moment he was found and reunited with his incredibly relieved loved ones, enjoying the relief obviously visible on everyone's faces. he was last seen in boulder creek and was found in big basin redwoods state park. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez spoke with him tonight about

what happened and how he survived. >> a missing hiker found alive and the heartfelt reunion was all captured in these photos. 34 year old lucas mcclish spent ten days in the santa cruz mountains on tuesday, june 11th, mcclish headed out for a three hour hike from his hometown of boulder creek. he said he got lost and didn't recognize certain landmarks wiped out by fires. when he didn't show up for father's day dinner, he was declared missing on sunday, june 16th. four days later, mcclish was rescued. four days later, mcclish was rescued. >> i'm sore, a little tired. i lost my voice. >> we spoke with mcclish on friday about what he had on him at the time. >> i left with, just a pair of my pants and my pair of hiking shoes and, and the hat i had a flashlight and a pair of folding

scissors, like a leatherman tool. and that was about it. >> and how he survived. >> i just make sure that i drank at least a gallon of water every day. but then after, like, getting close to the end of it, i was just. my body needed food and some type of sustenance. >> the santa cruz county sheriff's office said they deployed drones, the cal fire, san mateo, santa cruz unit, the boulder creek fire department, and california state parks assisted in the search, the sheriff's office said on thursday. around three in the afternoon, witnesses reported hearing someone yelling for help. mcclish was found in a remote canyon in big basin state park. he was moved to see all the boots and paws on the ground looking for him. >> this is really humbling and i don't know, it was awesome experience. >> both him and his family are feeling grateful for all the help they've received. >> relieved. so thankful and blessed and they won't be
