after a mass shooting, finding safety and community despite a tough week, plus a raise for hundredsf thousands of californians is being put on hold to balance the budget. abc seven news starts right now. >> always live■# abc seven news starts right now. >> we begin with theay area beating the heat. beach is the place to be with inland temps around 100 degrees in some spots. thanks for joining us tonight. i'm j.r stone in downtown walnut creek. patios are packed with people seeking out the shade. it's a busy day for ice cream shops as well. >> it's how i'm beating the heat today is right. i need to eat this fairly quick before i get covered in it. >> he's got a good idea right there in san francisco, ocean beach is offering a chilly alternative to the inland heat. a foggy day there compared to much of the bay area today. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian is tracking

the hot temperatures and the heat advisory still hitting parts of the bay area. >> spencer that's right jerry, beating the heat has certainly been our challenge today. we have a heat advisory still in effect for the inland hills and valleys all around the bay area until 10:00 tonight. as you can see, under these conditions of excessive heat, of course, there is a an increased risk of heat related illness. and you can see that even well, maybe you can't see it here, but even away from those inland areas where we've had the excessive heat, it's been quite warm in other spots as well. now you can see that looking at current temperature readings, we have numerous upper 90s in our inland areas right now and upper 70s to near 80 around the bay shoreline. at 5:00 an hour ago, we had no fewer than 5 or 6 inland locations at or above 100 degrees. and as you can see across the entire region, temperature readings right now are about ten to 15 or 16 degrees warmer than at this time yesterday, mainly in our inland areas. nonetheless our air quality is not bad. it's a moderate to good in most bay area locations right now, and we're getting a little bit of

cooling relief overnight into tomorrow. so i have a cooler forecast ahead and some improving air quality as well. j.r. thank you so much. >> spencer. firefighters in the state's largest wildfire are making progress despite the hot weather containment is up to 38% on the sites fire in colusa county, firefighters shared video of some of the 64 miles of control line they've built to keep the fire from spreading the site. fire has burned more than 19,000 acres, but no buildings. as first responders lifted the last evacuations today for the arrow fire along highway four and calaveras county fire burned more than 5300 acres near copperopolis this week. containment is up to 78. tonight, the fire destroyed three buildings and damaged one more. cause here is under investigation. now to the east bay. and what has been a difficult week for the city of oakland. first 15 people shot after an illegal sideshow interrupted a juneteenth

celebration at lake merritt. then the fbi raided the mayor's house. sources tell us it's part of a political corruption investigation. much quieter today outside mayor tsingtao's home. the mayor still has not made a public appearance or shared any kind of statement. after the raid. the yesterday, her attorney told us there's no sign tau is named in the investigation and she's willing to cooperate. her home was one of four spots raided thursday. the fbi also searched three locations tied to california's waste solutions, which holds a recycling contract with the city company told us today they were surprised by the raid. in a statement, california waste solutions said in part, quote, we believe that we have not engaged in or committed any illegal activities and are awaiting the decision of the law enforcement agency. people packed lake merritt today to find some community. after such a difficult week, police increased patrols for today's lake fest because of wednesday's mass shooting, organizers tell

abc seven news reporter cornell bernard. violence cast a shadow on today's event, but it won't stop their positivity >> free e lake fest is a family picnic. >> travel at hernandez and his crew ready to greet the public at lake fest, the event he founded on lake merritt. >> welcome to lake fest. thank you. >> this year, attendees are lining up outside for a security check. the festival, surrounded by blocks and blocks of fencing, trevelle says it's all about safety. >> we gated the whole park, we're checking bags and making sure no one has weapons or anything. >> on wednesday night, gun violence rocked a juneteenth celebration near lake merritt. oakland police say 15 people were wounded. the shooting is one of the biggest in the city's history, and a lot of my friends who are older, i'm 74, so a lot of my friends are older. >> like, well, i don't know, sandra. i don't know if it's

know, everybody's just here for a good time. go right for apple. >> chevelle was hoping 15,000 people would show up for lake fest to have a safe, relaxing, fun day. >> there aren't many things to do in oakland where we can all come together as one culture and enjoy ourselves. and we're hoping to do that and keep continue to do it in oakland, cornell, bernard abc seven news cornell. >>hank you so much. new at six california lawmakers have a budget deal, but it comes at the cost of wage increases for hundreds of thousands of health care workers. democrats agreed to delay a minimum wage bump that would have kicked in next month, as part of a bigger plan to close the budget shortfall. around $46 billion if lawmakers approve the budget, health care workers will get their raise in october, but that's only if state revenues are higher than expected the next three months. otherwise the raise will kick in next year. new details about the

push to bring giant pandas to the san francisco zoo. the big challenge will be paying for them, and we're getting a better idea of how much it could cost. the san francisco chronicle reports. the zoo's financial director put the cost at. get this as much as $70 million for a decade. that includes the panda enclosure, thousands of pounds of bamboo per month and the cost to rent the pandas from china. animal rights groups claim $70 million is a low estimate. mayor london breed's fundraising plan is focused on raising nearly 25 million. the zoo's deputy director says it's premature to put a price tag on what pandas would cost at. tackling homelessness is a critical part of building a better bay area. and this week, san jose took another step towards that goal. the city council agreed this week to assess adding eight safe sleeping sites for unhoused people. they would provide sanction places for people to

camp with food, showers and other resources. mayor matt mehan originally proposed nine sites, but neighbors opposed the location near history park. now, the city will figure how much the eight sites would cost. >> it's really complicated and, you know, riddled with a lot of different layers. and i think that we're getting to a better place. >> san jose's most recent count shows more than 6300 unhoused people in the city, 44% of those people live on the streets or along rivers. a judge has ordered stanford university and stanford health care to pay $10 million in damages to a longtime employee who had filed a racial harassment case in march. a jury found the two organizations had defamed the technician, who is black, in her 2017 lawsuit, she said coworkers used the n word and mistreated black patients. her attorneys say the day after

be closed for nearly a year and a half. the repairs cost about $60 million. privacy concerns are a big question as we consider the future of ai, and tonight one company is paying for it the facial recognition startup clearview ai agreed to settle a class action lawsuit over how it built its software. the new york based companies scraped billions of photos on social media sites to create the app, which it then sold to law enforcement across the country. settling with all those people whose pictures it took would bankrupt the company. so a judge agreed to let them give plaintiffs a share of the company's value. thousands of people will make their way to a remote northern california forest this month for a counterculture festival, but it is drawing concerns from first responders. the annual gathering of the rainbow family is heading for antelope lake in plumas county, about a five hour drive from san francisco. up to 10,000 people have showed up to the

, joined by spencer christian. and i know as a science guy, you can get into that. >> well, i certainly can. i love science, i love other subjects as welence is what i'm talking about today. >> that was inside, outside, a different story, especially inland. >> we've got some heat out there still. it's still with us, but it's beginning to taper off a little bit. here's a look at our satellite radar composite image jr. you can see the approaching cooling clouds that will not only bring us a drop in temperatures, which we of course can use, but a few drops of drizzle as well. but right now, we still have this heat advisory in effect for our interior hills and valleys until 10:00 tonight. so it's been quite hot all day and under these excessively hot conditions, there's an increased risk of heat related illness. so we should limit our time outdoors right now. stay hydrated. we've got a nice little onshore breeze right now. not a powerful one, but it's enough to cool us off a little bit nonetheless. look at these 24 hour temperature change. most inland locations right now are ten to about 16 degrees cooler than it uh- cooler. warmer than at this time yesterday. so we've

had quite a warm up 63 degrees in san francisco right now. oakland 7179 at hayward, 85 at san jose, redwood city 79 at 56 at half moon bay. looking down onto the bay from mount tam. earlier, we had a little finger of fog pushing through the golden gate that has burned away now, but there will be more coming our way. 91 degrees in santa rosa right now. petaluma 8277 at napa. upper 90s at fairfield, concord and livermore. so on we go to blue sky over the golden gate while we check out the weather headlines. heat advisory remains in effect tonight until late tonight for the interior hills and valleys. tomorrow the heat eases area wide, but it will still be warm in many inland locations. and then into next week. the fog returns. we get a cooler pattern. we'll all feel more comfortable overnight. look for the fog to form along the coastline and push locally across the bay. there'll be lots of patches of drizzle offshore overnight. not likely to see much of this hitting land areas, but just be aware that it's there overnight. low temperatures will be generally in the mid to upper 50s, so on the mild side but not uncomfortable. so not for most

locations. highs tomorrow near 60 at the coast, 64 here in the city right around the bay shoreline. low to mid 70s and many spots up to about 80 in the warmest locations and areas inland today, especially in the inland east bay where we had numerous 100 degree plus readings. today we're talking about low to mid 90s tomorrow, so that is quite a change. and there'll be more change coming our way on monday, with further cooling monday into tuesday and into wednesday, we'll see temperatures moderating and we'll be getting back into a more seasonal weather pattern. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so for the first few days of next week, basically we'll see low to mid 90s as our high temperatures inland mid to upper 70s around the bay shoreline. later in the week it becomes breezy and cooler on thursday, and we'll hold on to some of that cooling effect going into next weekend. >> welcome to sports. the giants and cardinals resume their three game series today in saint louis. i was in birmingham, alabama thursday for the giants cardinals game at rickwood field . as amazing as it looked on tv, i can tell you it was unreal in

burning in that area. two southbound lanes of 101 are blocked near alum rock avenue because of this fire. well, a special tribute in san francisco today for the late, great willie mays. his passing earlier this week coincides with the may luis softball tournament. it was named for the hall of famers late wife, a social worker for the city's human services agency. 25 teams are playing at moscone field to support foster youth, and willie mays is on their minds. >> we had a, 22nd moment of silence before the event, day's events occurred and i think it was a solemn kind of, moment of silence for willie mays. >> the tournament had been on hiatus since 2019 because of the pandemic, but boy, what good times out there. and i know it was a special moment down there in alabama. chris. >> yeah, and i was wondering how the mood was going to be in alabama. it was actually a very
