graham hicks is a lighting designer from ottawa, canada, and, graham, i understand this is not your first time hanging out with a "jeopardy!" host, right? i had the opportunity a few years ago to light a charity-- a charity fundraiser for the university of ottawa, and one of the more famous alumni from university of ottawa is a man named alex trebek. - right. - when alex trebek walked into the room, it was like you could hear a pin drop. everybody just, "oh, hello. it's him." that's a whole 'nother level, right? just a really charming guy, really-- really friendly, really charismatic. it was a--it was a really great event. i remember the first time i saw him walk out at the top of my first show, i was like, "i can't believe it." yeah. "he's real! that's alex trebek!" [laughter] very exciting. erin buker is a stay-at-home mom from san pedro, california. and i understand your daughter had a very difficult question for me, right? yes. uh, last week at taping, 'cause i was the alternate... okay. ...um, she asked you, i believe, uh, what--where you think "jeopardy!" will be in 20 years, or what it will be like. she wanted me to predict the future. imagine what it's like to be her mother.

[laughter] you're getting stumped all the time at home! absolutely. that is how kids are. drew basile is our returning champion, a grad student from birmingham, michigan. and i understand, speaking of difficult questions, you caused many questions once in a sushi restaurant. yeah, well, ken, as you can probably tell, uh, i'm quite tall. you know, i'm 6'6". so, that was a little unheard of last summer when i went to japan with some friends of mine. and i can remember, there was one particular night-- you know, it was late, we were going into this sushi bar, and it was this low entrance, so i really had to stoop. and then when i came to my full height, the full restaurant, there were gasps. [laughter] people were so in awe that they began to get up and compare their shoes to me, uh, and they bought me free things, and then the rest of the trip i walked on my tippy-toes. >> late june rainfall today. what might tomorrow bring? i'll have the accuweather forecast. i decided to marry you. >> i decided to marry you. >> the biggest night in high school musical theater. and a local star got to share the stage. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> tonight, the abc seven news i-team is following the money linked to recent federal raids in oakland. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm julian glover. >> for the first time since those raids were hearing from oakland mayor shing town. >> yeah, her home was among four locations raided by agents four days ago. we saw the fbi, the irs, and u.s. postal inspectors spread out across oakland looking for evidence. >> and now the abc seven news i-team is following the money, uncovering new information linked to the fbi's political corruption investigation. >> i-team reporter stephanie sierra discovered the alleged fraud schemes date back to 2016. >> new details about the man,

seemingly at the center of the fbi's political corruption investigation that raided the mayor of oakland's home last week. now it's getting more interesting. a short search on andy duong's instagram page shows he frequently posts with people in high places in the political world, including president joe biden, vice president kamala harris, governor gavin newsom, multiple pictures with attorney general rob bonta and health and human services secretary and former ag javier becerra, the list goes on, including some in other states like nevada ag aaron ford. according to an investigation by the fair political practices commission, which is a state oversight arm, andy duong was the true source of at least 93 contributions to multiple local campaign committees when he created a campaign contribution laundered scheme to benefit his family owned company, california waste solutions, or ors, falsely using

the names of intermediaries or straw donors. instead of disclosing as the true source of the contributions. according to the fppc, this is an ongoing investigation with evidence suggesting it started around 2016 through at least 2018, and included some campaign contributions that were fraudulently concealed from the public. all but one of the campaign committee's targeted were in jurisdictions with local contribution limits, and the investigation found during this time, the city of oakland prohibited campaign contributions from contractors providing services to the city, requiring city council approval. yet documents show many of the targeted committees were candidates running for city council. for example, xiang tao running for city council in 2018, received $9,900 from duong that the fppc alleges was laundered through 13 different people. the report also alleges

that larry reed received $5,600 that was laundered through eight different entities. dan kalb received $4,200, allegedly laundered through six different people or entities. rebekah kaplan allegedly received $3,500, laundered through seven people, and former councilmember desley brooks received more than $18,000 over two campaign cycles , allegedly laundered through 24 people. former council member abel guillen, who is now california's deputy superintendent of public instruction, received $4,200, allegedly laundered through 12 different people. >> shady, shady, unethical, you know, they you know, they you know, they're, they tend to, you know, you know, they tend to operate like, in this sort of kind of bribery system. you know, to buy influence and to influence and, and they do, you know, they get a little more sophisticated here in america

because we have more rules. >> shirley gee is the executive director of the vietnamese-american community center of the east bay. she says she got to know the dongs at a gala fundraiser for vietnamese american seniors in the, gala. >> he jumped up and said he was going to pledge $1,500 to the seniors. and, you know, everybody clapped and, you know, thought that was wonderful. and then when we went to collect from him, you know, we sent multiple emissaries, you know, to him within the vietnamese community and said, hey, what's the deal? you pledge this money, it's for the seniors. where is it? you know, and he at first, you know, tried to do that hiding game. and then we sent emissaries to try to collect and then, but in the end, he stiffed us. >> according to an abc7 news analysis of state and federal data, both andy duong and his father, david, have made contributions totaling more than $250,000 to 28 candidates across california, more than 300 other

contributions, totaling over $2 million, were sent to candidates or political action committees across the country, including donations to the campaigns for representatives eric swalwell, adam schiff, barbara lee and even former president donald trump. a campaign spokesperson for congressman schiff wrote. the i-team following public news reports the campaign will be giving $26,000. the total contribution received from mr. duong and his family to a local nonprofit helping address housing and homelessness. we reached out to the other public officials directly, but haven't immediately heard back for the i-team. stephanie sierra, abc seven news the mayor of oakland appeared in public today for the first time since thursday's raids. >> abc seven news reporter ryan curry was there in the room as she addressed her city, the accusations against her and the calls to resign. >> oakland mayor shengtao,

appearing publicly for the first time since the fbi raided her house, law enforcement sources tell abc seven news the raid was part of a public corruption investigation. mayor tao says she is innocent. >> and i want to be crystal clear. i have done nothing wrong. i can tell you with confidence that this investigation is not about me. >> the mayor read a prepared statement questioning the fbi's tactics when agents showed up to her house early thursday morning . >> i want to know what probable cause the fbi has. what evidence have they collected that justify raiding the home of a city mayor without notice, and without the courtesy of a conversation outside city hall? >> she resigned following the mayor's media conference. calls for her to step down were once again shouted by a group aiming to recall her. >> you can bluster and everything and pretend that you are a victim. we don't need victims, we need leaders. we need leadership, tao says.

phil matier, broke the news that the mayor had changed. lawyers had happened on our 3 p.m. newscast getting answers. >> mayor qingdao's attorney, tony brass, a very competent and experienced former federal prosecutor. i had talked with him and basically it appears that he is terminating his relationship with the mayor. that just began. and the reason she said yes, it was it appears to be, first of all, that she held the press conference without giving him a heads up about what she was going to say. and that's one of the first things you don't do if you're someone's client, if somebody representing you, you don't go out on your own. the second thing, i think he was not at all comfortable with her uh- sort of insinuations that the fbi was out to get her, that the fbi was somehow in collusion or timing this deliberately. after the recall petitions qualified, putting a recall of her on the ballot. >> as you can see, this story is far from over. you'll want to

being called the apache fire. so far, firefighters have zero containment on this fire. a wildfire that's burning for more than a week in sonoma county is now fully contained. cal fire says the point fire scorched more than 1200 acres between geyserville and las lomas. it started june 16th and destroyed three buildings. of course you can track the fires burning in the bay area and across the state with our abc seven news wildfire tracker. click on the fire icon to learn the latest on each of the fires, including acres burned and containment. you can find that information at abc seven news.com/fire map. >> firefighters handled a grass fire in san jose this afternoon. heavy smoke as you see, and flames could be seen from highways 85 and 87. traffic was at a standstill once crews cleared the highway, they were able to gain ground on the flames. the all clear came shortly after 2 p.m. and then check this out. san jose had a pretty good downpour this afternoon. there were even a couple of lightning strikes.

this video was shot outside our san jose bureau near san jose. minetta international airport around 3 p.m. i guess you just never know what you're going to get unless you listen to spencer first. >> exactly. let's go. let's get this check of the forecast now with abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian spencer . no more this rain coming our way. right. >> okay, okay. no more. we. it was rather unusual, though. late june rain here in the bay area. we had a lot of instability in the atmosphere, some moisture coming up from the southwest. as you can see here on the satellite radar. composite image. quite a big disturbance down there. the southern tip of nevada and northern mexico. and you can see a widespread area of subtropical moisture moving into the interior southwest and western us. and some of it, of course, flowing into the bay area. thus the showers we had in the south bay today, they didn't last very long, but they were fun to watch and unusual as well. right now we're looking at our surface winds across the bay area, and you can see the winds are very, very light. the one exception sfo with 16 mile per hour breezes. that's not very

strong either. 24 hour temperature change is not terribly significant, but important to watch because it's a warmer now than it was at this time last night by about 2 to 5 degrees. so that warmth from this afternoon is holding on. right now it is 61 in oakland, 66 hayward, san jose, 71 degrees. some of our reporting stations have been on the blink this evening. not reporting hour on every hour on the hour as they typically do. these are, however, 57 degrees right now in santa rosa, petaluma, 5263. in napa we have mid to upper 70s at fairfield, concord and livermore. and then we go to the view from mount tam looking down onto the bay. and these are the forecast headlines. tomorrow we'll see lots of lingering clouds in the morning hours, but lots of sunshine spreading around in the afternoon. remainder of the week. bright skies for the most part with mild temperature ranges and for the weekend coming up. sunny for the for sunday's san francisco pride parade. we've got some great weather ahead, so here's the forecast animation for the overnight hours. those clouds will continue at the mid-level and upper level. streaming

through the bay area. we're not expecting any showers, but a sprinkle or two is possible because of the moisture content in these clouds. and then by about oh 830 9:00 tomorrow morning, we'll see a little bit more sun breaking through. still, though, a lot of clouds lingering tomorrow until around midday or so. overnight low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s, so it's going to be mild overnight as that afternoon heat i was talking about is going to be slow to retreat. some locations will not see lows dropping below 60 degrees, which is uncomfortable warm for the overnight period unless you have air conditioning highs tomorrow under sunny or afternoon skies. 60 at the coast, mid to upper 70s right around the bay shoreline. generally upper 80s inland. some locations like morgan hill, livermore, antioch will top out at or above 90 degrees. here's the accuweather seven day forecast and cools down a bit on wednesday by several degrees. as a matter of fact and then from wednesday through saturday, actually, we can expect highs inland only in the upper 80s to about 90 degrees. that extends into sunday as well. mid 70s around

the bay shoreline. sunday is looking great for the sf pride parade as temperatures bounce back a little bit, but it won't be hot. there will, however, be hot in some inland areas on monday as temperatures rise into the upper 90s. that could be the beginning of another period of hot weather. okay. >> thank you, thank you. >> well, getting a break from the heat is top of mind for unhoused people and those advocating for them. and now there are claims santa clara county isn't utilizing all of its shelter beds to bring people inside when it's hot out. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes has more on the allegations and the response from officials. >> rising summer temperatures have made the toughest living conditions not only more unbearable for unhoused people in santa clara county. advocates say it can be deadly. >> a lot of the people who are dying, one of the secondary, primary, secondary causes of death is diabetes and hypertension. and those are things that definitely go through the roof during heat. >> but advocate sean cartwright. unhoused people and other community groups say the county has left at least 80 beds at

this sunnyvale shelter unused. the shelter has been going through transition. the current operator is pulling out after allegations that it discriminated against black employees and residents. the new operator will eventually transition it from serving single adults to homeless families, something advocates say is a disservice to older single people. still, they say the immediate need this summer is moving people into air conditioned shelter. the county's office of supportive housing confirmed with us that the north county shelter is operating at reduced capacity, while site improvements are being made. in a statement, it said the county stopped new referrals to the shelter in late april 2024, so the remaining residents could be served in one part of the building. while the county completes repairs to other parts of the building and parking lot this summer. >> it makes no sense whatsoever that they need to have less than 60 people in this half to do that half, county supervisor otto lee said. >> he's focused on making sure the shelters upcoming transition between operators goes smoothly for staff and residents, and also shares concern over underused shelter beds. you know, doing renovation, maybe you can not fill every single

closure. several restaurants in the area, including denny's and in-n-out, have shut down recently, citing concerns over crime. the oakland police department is in need of a long term technology plan, according to a new report by the alameda county grand jury. the grand jury spent a year looking into the department's it unit and pinpointed what it calls missed opportunities. it determined the unit is understaffed and there is no plan, nor any resources in place to develop real time crime center. the grand jury also found oakland police do not respond to all shotspotter verified alerts, and the department is unable to respond to more than 100 license plate reader alerts each day happening tomorrow. >> the san francisco unified school district board is scheduled to discuss school closures. the district is grappling with a budget deficit and low enrollment. school leaders hope closing schools will save money and allow resources to be redistributed. there is no vote expected tomorrow. the board will be focusing on the criteria they're going to use to decide which
