covering how these financial moves really impact our lives. >> let's start with the clock ticking in oakland. there's a critical meeting tomorrow as the city races to close a multi-million dollar shortfall while grappling with the fbi raid of the mayor's home. >> abc seven news reporter tim johns shows us what the city is dealing with. tim. >> yeah, julian. i'm a mayor. sheng tao has been saying that she would balance the budget in oakland by selling the city's share of the oakland coliseum. however, as of tonight, a deal to do that isn't done yet. and without that money, city officials are scrambling to figure out what their best

options are. with just days to go to pass a budget, oakland city officials are busy examining all the options. freedom, balance. >> today, we're going to go bankrupt, city council member noel gayo says. >> oakland is in a tough spot and facing a deficit of nearly $200 million for both this year and next. in order to fill that gap, the city had been relying on the sale of its share of the oakland coliseum. as of tuesday, that sale isn't done yet, and the city administrator's office says it's presenting council members with a variety of budget options. some of those options include scenarios without the stadium money, and would plan for potentially deep spending cuts. >> the reality is, is if i make reductions, where do i reduce the budget? what positions do i eliminate or reduce? and certainly the public, my neighbors say they want public service or the public safety to increase. >> those concerns are top of mind for many of the city's public services. >> two, we're already at a tipping point where we're so busy we're almost unable to do our job. >> zach unger is the president of local 55, a union

representing oakland firefighters. he says if budget cuts were to come through, it would be catastrophic, not just for the fire department, but also for oakland residents. >> i talked to a firefighter today who's working 12 to 24 hour shifts in a row, consecutive 12, 24 hour shifts because we are so short staffed. and if we can't hire and we keep losing firefighters by attrition, that's going to become the norm. >> despite her ongoing legal issues, oakland mayor xiang tao says she remains focused on helping the city council pass a balanced budget in a statement tuesday, tao insisting that the coliseum stadium sale will go through and pointing out they have a buyer. a bold prediction, says abc seven news insider phil matier. well the chances of this deal going through in the next couple of days are slim, but the chances of the money from that deal actually being available to the city to spend are even slimmer, matier says. whenever it does go through the stadium, money will just be a one time fix. he believes the bigger challenge for the council going forward will be addressing the structural issues surrounding the city's finances. >> but every year they want to

avoid the hard choices. it's not politically palatable for a lot of them, and they have been deferring and deferring and deferring, and it looks like it's caught up with them. >> now. the oakland city council will hold a special meeting tomorrow specifically to tackle the budget deficit. i'm live in the studio tonight. tim johns, abc seven news. >> all right, tim, thank you so much. turning now to the other budget crisis in san francisco's schools, san francisco unified is in a dire financial position, talking eventual teacher layoffs and school closures. tonight, students and families packed the board meeting, ready to fight for their school's future. abc7 news reporter j.r stone explains how the district will make some difficult decisions one by one. >> parents, students and concerned citizens in san francisco took to the microphone to tell those leaving the san francisco unified school district that they are concerned about school closures and the decision on what schools to close or combine. for me, there's no merging. >> there's either closing or

closing, right? they're just using the word merging to kind of cover the closings. this is a city where there's boom and there bust, there's bust. >> and we also have to be prepared for the boom. >> the district says that since the start of the 2017 school year, there has been a 4000 student decline in san francisco, meaning much less funding and meaning changes must be made. san francisco unified superintendent matt wayne says this is a problem that is not limited to san francisco, san francisco, the bay area, california is facing, you know, a declining population, you know, fewer kindergarten births. we have less students. >> there have also been concerns amongst many about possible mismanaged funds within the district. the school board has not yet released a list of schools recommended for closure in 2025, saying that will come in the fall, likely september. independent third party researchers will make that list by calculating composite scores of schools based on 50% equity,

25% excellence and 25% effective use of resources. >> if the recommendations, you know, are, you know, dis, you know, are more significantly impacting our, you know, african american or latino students. >> i get a sense that from this board that's not going to be acceptable. >> wayne's saying that changes would then be made. still, though, you can see all the students from june jordan's school of equity who showed up at tuesday's meeting, along with parents from jose ortega elementary school. are they concerned about that school closing? >> yeah, all small schools are concerned about closure right now, but we've been told that we might close all right. >> we've been told that the language program might move. we've been told we could become 100% immersion. we don't know. and it's creating this sense of anxiety amongst parents. a lot of parents are already saying, i don't just want to leave san francisco for parents right now, though, a waiting game for the list of schools that could close or move certain programs

elsewhere. >> jr stone, abc seven news. >> it was a busy day for firefighters in the east bay with a fast moving fire burning near power lines. sky seven was overhead as these palm trees went up in flames in the marshland near eureka drive and stevenson boulevard, south of fremont. alameda county firefighters kept the fire from spreading to the business complex across the way. it burned 34 acres in total. the fire was contained by seven tonight, but firefighters stuck around to make sure it didn't flare up. and hopefully you're enjoying a calm night here in the bay area. after a day of really unusual weather. some people saw rain, some even saw lightning. today, abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian joining me now with a look at your 24 hour accuweather forecast. spencer. >> all right, julian, it certainly was a day of unusual weather, but right now things are calming calming down as you mentioned. so here's the outlook for tomorrow starting at 7:00 tomorrow morning they'll be partly cloudy skies. skies getting brighter, but some lingering clouds will be around. it will be around 60 degrees inland and around the bay. then

by noon we'll be looking at sunnier skies, temperatures in the upper 70s inland, upper 60s around the bay. only upper 50s on the coast. we'll get to the 4:00 afternoon hour when, which is pretty much near our peak of our warming in the afternoon hours, mid to upper 80s inland. low 70s around the bay shoreline. still not hitting the 60 degree mark on the coast though. and then as the sun is about to set 7:00 our upper 70s inland mid 60s around the bay. it's going to be a nice, mild and mainly sunny day and there'll be more of these ahead. i'll have the accuweather seven day forecast in just a few minutes. ama julian thank you. >> spencer. new at 11 antioch finally has a way to officially crack down and punish those who organize sideshows, promote them, or are spectators. the council tonight unanimously passed an ordinance that was nearly two years in the making before it was put to a vote. there was public debate over whether spectators should be included. >> i don't think that you need a specifically make any person within 200ft uh- a criminal of these sideshows. if i want to take my phone out and i want to

video this and then hand that video over to the police. but now i'm also a criminal. >> these are not really spectators. they're encouraging the actual drivers of those vehicles. >> if people get caught, they could face a fine as well as jail time. antioch's mayor has said it would be. it could be a few months before the ordinance actually takes effect. >> we have some new developments to share tonight that could be life changing for lgbtq veterans in the bay area. for decades now, many service members kicked out of the military because of who they love have been denied benefits because of the way they were discharged. in starting today, veterans can apply to have those benefits restored. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez explains the impact. >> starting tuesday, the department of veterans affairs has expanded access to benefits to thousands of vets who had been considered ineligible, including some kicked out for homosexuality. >> we're actually introducing our veterans to secondary trauma

because they're actually being told once again, that they could not get benefits because of their particular discharge. >> david west is the nevada county veterans services officer and the president of a veteran organization. officials said the rules apply to lgbtq plus service members with certain other than honorable discharges related to their sexual identity. years ago, va officials had previously amended rules to allow service members discharged under the don't ask, don't tell policy to access benefits or getting caught holding hands out in public and somebody turning you in because of because of their own biases. >> right? not because you were doing anything wrong, not because you couldn't carry your weight on the battlefield or in training. does this because of what made you feel happy? >> local veteran services offices are preparing for former service members to come forward and appeal their previously denied benefits, and they're hoping to get the word out so more veterans know.

>> tell them, sorry i didn't serve with you, but now i'm here to serve for you and help you get the benefits that you're entitled to, that you earned because you had the same intestinal fortitude that i had when i decided to join the marine corps. >> the updated regulations don't just affect the lgbtq plus community. the va will review discharges due to bad behavior and will consider mental and physical health and whether the individual faced discrimination or other challenges while serving. >> so now what this does is it opens the door for those veterans voices to finally be heard. >> the va says the exception provides a pathway to benefits and services to deserving former service members in the south bay. lauren martinez abc seven news keeping teens safe on snapchat the changes to keep strangers out of kids dms 9-1-1 calls messed up in one bay area community. >> how thieves broke the system in san francisco. >> hey, even the wildlife has pride. the festive displays coming up before the big parade.

morning. it led to multiple lanes being closed in the northbound direction just before the highway 242 split in concord , fire started just after 9 a.m, chp says the truck was carrying a full load at the time. this led to concern there could be a potential hazmat situation. they eventually removed the truck and all lanes reopened around 4 p.m, a district attorney says a man who killed a black bear in south lake tahoe will not be facing charges. >> the state department of fish and wildlife says the 16 month old bear cub spotted here in that video entered the man's home through a back door on may the 27th. the homeowner shouted, waved his arms, but the bear started to huff and went towards the man's dog. well, the man then shot the bear. it then left, but the man said it looked like the bear was suffering, so he shot it again to put it down before calling 911. the da's office determined the homeowner ultimately did not break the law . yes, we're all yes, we're all yes. it's a project our abc

seven news i-team has been following for months now, and today a proposal to build a new city went before the solano county board of supervisors. hundreds of people showed up for public hearings on what's known as california forever. the proposed city is the dream of silicon valley billionaires. the supervisors did request an economic impact report of the project and will take it up when they meet again in july. they will then decide whether to accept the plan or put it before voters come november. >> tonight in san rafael, a small group of protesters gathered at dominican university, where doctor anthony fauci came to speak. the protesters believe fauci's response to the covid 19 pandemic put lives at risk. they came to join tech mogul steve kirsch, who is known for sharing pandemic related misinformation. some of the group went to a happy hour with kirsch beforehand. fauci left the federal government in 2022 after five decades of service, and is currently on a book tour promoting his memoir, on call.

earlier today, doctor fauci was in san francisco for an event at manny's in the mission district. some in attendance are honoring him, especially during pride month because of the important work he did during the hiv aids epidemic team that was working on an hiv vaccine were the ones that developed the critical immunogen for the success of the covid vaccine. in his career, fauci worked under seven presidents to fight some of the world's deadliest diseases. >> 9-1-1 calls are being rerouted in parts of the east bay tonight because thieves stripped copper cables out of the phone lines. this is a new one. police in pinole say this is the second time this month that copper thefts have brought down their 9-1-1 system. they say thieves targeted the same location once on june 4th and again on saturday. police arrested two suspects saturday. right now, the contra costa county sheriff's office is picking up 9-1-1 calls for pinole, hercules and san pablo. snapchat is rolling out new safety features aimed at making

it harder for teens to be contacted by strangers. the app is expanding, warning pop ups that appear when users get a message from someone that is not in their contacts list. teens will also get a warning message if they get a chat from a user who's been blocked or reported by others. these tools are part of snapchat's latest effort to stop the sexual and financial exploitation of minors. >> time now for our abc seven news advancer at 11, where we help you get ahead on the big headlines coming up. up first, counting down to the 2020 rematch on the debate stage, president biden and former president trump will face off in the first 2024 presidential debate this thursday. today on our show getting answers, we asked democratic south bay congressman ro khanna what he thinks biden needs to focus on. >> i would talk about three big things. he's going to get universal child care. he's going to help make community college and college free or affordable. and he's going to push for an increase in the minimum wage. and working class wages. >> former president trump

1030. check it out wherever you watch abc7. >> a musical moment for our final advancer. meet san francisco's new sunset community band supervisor joel engardio says they answered his call to start a marching band in the city's sunset district. they'll make their performance debut on saturday for a parade along great highway to kick off early 4th of july festivities. the band is open to all ages and they are looking for more musicians. they sound good. yeah, they do well, people will have the chance this week to own a piece of treasured british royalty. there's a rare auction underway of some of princess diana's personal effects. there are shoes, hats, handbags and gowns that will be up for bidding. this is the largest auction of the late princess's items since she held her own auction in 1997, and a lot of them came from a friend of a lifelong friend of diana. >> we should say, she says, the

some 24 mile per hour winds, and the 24 hour temperature change shows virtually every location in the bay area. a few degrees cooler right now than at this time last night. so let's take a closer look. this is our exploratorium camera, looking back at a portion of the skyline in san francisco. 53 degrees here in the city right now, mid to upper 50s at oakland and hayward, mid 60s at san jose and redwood city, and 53 at half moon bay. looking along the bay bridge from emeryville. of the temperature readings right now, 50 in petaluma, mid to upper 50s at santa rosa and napa, 67 at fairfield and livermore. concord 71 degrees. and let's check out our forecast headlines. you can see a few thin clouds out over the bay right now, looking down from mount tam. the remainder of the week will have bright skies and a mild temperature range this weekend. sunny and mild, and that includes sunday here in san francisco for the sf pride parade. and early next week it will be heating up inland and over the bay. we may see some triple digit temperature readings during that warm up, but tonight, nice and calm and partly cloudy with low temperatures generally in the mid to upper 50s. highs tomorrow under sunny afternoon skies.

upper 50s at the coast 64 here in san francisco right around the bay shoreline. we'll see mid to upper 70s in the inland areas that were near 100 a couple of days ago. only upper 80s tomorrow. so a pretty mild but not very warm day. and here is our accuweather seven day forecast. notice the temperature trend for the remainder of the week. it'll be pretty steady actually. mid to upper 80s inland up to about 90 on warmer days like friday. the high temperatures around the bay shoreline will be mainly in the mid 70s. then on sunday it will be sf pride day here in san francisco. beautiful day getting up to about 90in the inland areas, mid 70s around the bay shoreline about 60 degrees on the coast. but then early next week as the month of july kicks off, it'll kick the temperatures up a little bit as well. inland areas on monday we'll see mid 90s or mid to upper 90s, actually about 80 degrees around the bay shoreline. and by tuesday it's quite likely we'll see some of the hottest locations inland, topping out at around 100 degrees mid
