right now. >> eight years long fight for affordable farmworker housing appears to be over tonight with a vote by half moon bay's city council. good evening. i'm julian glover, and i'm ama daetz. >> thank you for joining us. a major development tonight on a story we've been following for nearly two years now. half moon, bay city council voted unanimously to approve a five story, 40 unit affordable

housing development for senior farm workers. it will be on kelly avenue in downtown. >> backers of the project say they are, quote, over the moon about tonight's vote. it came after a contentious public meeting where supporters and opponents spoke about the project. supporters say the development addresses really dire housing conditions. coastside farm workers currently face. >> yeah, those came to light following that deadly mass shooting in half moon bay in 2023. opponents argued the project was too big and would create traffic bottlenecks. >> something more appropriate. please not this project. it's too big. >> the only way we're going to be able to house more people is to go up. >> we don't want to suffer anymore. please, let's keep forward with 5-5-5 kelly. >> the council dismissed three appeals for the project, clearing the path for the project to move forward. the next steps are leasing agreements for that property. >> the specific project has been in the works since 2022, when half moon bay sought to develop

affordable housing. on this plot of city owned land where these buildings are now, alas and mercy housing jointly applied and were selected. the city's planning commission was accused of moving too slowly on the project. it even caught the attention of governor newsom, who threatened to intervene if the commission didn't act. the planning commission gave its conditional approval in may. >> now to your voice your vote in the race for president. hard to believe we'll be voting in just a matter of months tomorrow. president joe biden and former president donald trump will be facing off in atlanta in the first debate of the 2024 campaign. abc seven news reporter j.r stone is here with a look ahead and jr reports out of sacramento say governor newsom will be there to certainly will. >> he will be there as a surrogate and likely make several tv appearances. professors i spoke with said that's not really a surprise as it's pretty common for a big name in the party to be involved. like that. now, as for the debate, whether you like the candidates or not, it certainly will be interesting to see who

frames themselves as a better leader going forward. biden. trump. trump. biden whatever way you want to say it, we are now less than 24 hours away from the first presidential debate of the election cycle. >> i'm calling on crooked joe to debate any time, any place. we'll do it anywhere you want, joe. we'll make my day, pal. i'll even do it twice. so let's pick the daetz. donald. >> there have been questions about former president trump's many lawsuits against him and questions about president biden's age and health. here's professor donna crane of san jose state university. >> history tells us that the public doesn't make its decision very much based on debates, but it still feels like there's a lot at stake. and i think that there is. but the rules of this debate will most certainly have an impact. >> a mute button will be used by the moderator. so the speaker is able to talk uninterrupted. >> it's going to be interesting. this is the first time, i think, since the 1960 debates between nixon and kennedy, where there's

no audience. >> zev yaroslavsky, a longtime los angeles city council member and supervisor, is now a ucla professor. he's a democrat and favors biden. going into this debate, the x factor here is how how trump is going to behave. >> and it's all speculation. i don't think he can control himself for an hour and a half. so if he if he makes a, a spectacle of himself, as he did four years ago, then, i think that hurts him. >> but crane says the rules in place a mute button, and no audience could actually favor trump. >> it's going to prevent him from being so domineering, both over president biden and over the moderator. so i'm wondering if that it will just sort of take away some of his more unpleasant tendencies when he debates. those just won't be possible. so, you know, that could that could result in him appearing less, less of a bully. >> both professors believe that biden has more to gain with crane saying that she believes

he comes into this debate as the underdog. and there is a belief among some that if trump doesn't feel like the debate is going well, he could possibly announce a republican vp name to get the headline. some also wondering that if both biden and trump do poorly, could folks take a closer look at robert f kennedy jr? who's the independent candidate? and according to cnn, did not qualify for thursday's debate. j.r stone, abc seven news a lot to watch tomorrow night j.r. >> thank you so much. and once again you can watch the presidential debate right here on abc seven tomorrow night. coverage starts at five. the debate hosted by cnn kicks off at six. >> let's turn now to oakland mayor shengtao. she attended her first public meeting today since her house was raided by the fbi a week ago. mayor tao spent most of her day in san francisco attending a meeting of the metropolitan transportation commission, where she's commissioner. she was all business today. the mayor refused to take questions from reporters about the raid. she eventually left the meeting

early. one public commenter called in to demand tao resign at oakland city hall. the focus is on the city's looming budget deadline. just three days away, city council members honed in today on the finance department's amendments to mayor tao's budget. the new budget includes $63 million in cuts that may include freezing 100 police officer positions and 41 civilian staff for fire stations. may also be on the chopping block. council president nikki fortunato bass is demanding an audit of the city's assets. >> when we get to our budget discussions on friday, there is a policy directive in my budget amendments so that we can do an inventory of our assets and those needs over the next ten years. >> there are also concerns the sale of the oakland coliseum may not be finalized in time for the money to be used in this new budget. oakland is facing a historic $200 million deficit.

a thing that has made me feel like it's okay to be myself, and growing up in this city, i've really appreciated that. >> in san francisco, ryan curry, abc seven news. >> well, there is lots of fun to be had this weekend. of course, abc seven is the official station for the san francisco pride parade. our coverage kicks off sunday at 10 a.m. the parade steps off at 1030 and will be led by dikes on bikes. as it always is. you can see that wherever you watch abc7 in san francisco, a police chase ended with a crash near the embarcadero in the south of market area this afternoon. >> it began with a reported carjacking in alameda, or, police say a mother and her children were forced out of their car at gunpoint. investigators tracked the stolen bmw to oakland, where they followed the car across the bay bridge into the city. that's when the suspects crashed into a light pole and took off. here's alameda police chief on what happened to be removed from your car at gunpoint and your car to be taken from you with your

children in the car is traumatic . three people were arrested. police say a gun was also recovered. >> now to some developing news here. tonight, a grass fire in contra costa county grew rapidly this afternoon, burning 255 acres in about two hours near the antioch brentwood border. the fire is now 75% contained. it started along deer valley road near a residential community, and had plenty of dry grass for the flames to feed on. firefighters then use bulldozers and fire retardant to keep the flames from reaching homes. there firefighters have gained control of a vegetation fire that caused some anxious moments in san jose. this was first reported at about 530 this evening near mill pond drive in the communications hill neighborhood. fire raced up the hill, putting up lots of smoke in the progress. the san jose fire department says the fire burned about 30 acres, but no structures were damaged. >> well, we did have some cooler

temperatures across the bay area today. >> yeah. we want to get a look at the forecast now with spencer christian. hey, spencer. >> hey, jillian and ama. well, today's cooldown did help a bit in terms of fire concerns, but we're expecting a heat wave next week, so those concerns will be elevated once again. here's a look at our day planner for tomorrow. it's going to be a sunny day for most of the day, but in the early morning hours, around 7:00 or so, there'll be some lingering clouds. we'll call it partly cloudy temperatures in the upper 50s by noon, a little bit sunnier. high temperatures die. high temperatures, temperatures ranging from upper 60s near the bay to upper 70s inland. we get into the peak of our warming late afternoon, look for temperatures up to about 70 degrees around the bay, upper 80s inland, and then things will cool down just a few degrees under increasingly cloudy conditions near the coast. going into the evening hours. but we do have that heat wave ahead, and i'll give you all the details on that, showing you how hot it's going to be. and when. in just a few minutes, jillian and ama. >> all right. thank you, spencer. we'll check back. a legal fight could delay the reopening of one of san francisco's most iconic buildings. we'll learn why a

do with the dog, because it's so much of dogs are great at watching human behavior, but humans aren't always great at watching dog behavior. >> last week, rhino senses led search and rescue teams directly to a missing at risk hiker. the santa cruz county sheriff's office said lucas mcleish had been lost for ten days in the santa cruz mountains last thursday, the sheriff's office launched drones similar to the ones pictured here to help pinpoint where the 34 year old was. >> eventually, the drone, ended up in the area of foreman creek and we heard someone yelling that the drone was right over their location with a general area in mind, weber said. >> he held on to the leash and followed rhino. >> we had a really steep hillside on the right side of us that rhino wanted to pull to a few times, and in training where i say, trust your dog. and so i was like, if he wants to pull up that, there's probably a reason i'm going to trust him on this one.

democrat today reports that crews discovered a slab of steel along the bottom of the commercial fishing vessels keel, and think it may be the reason the ship was immovable. the coast guard is still investigating why that ship ran aground. >> happening tomorrow, the supreme court is expected to deliver more decisions on landmark cases as the court's latest term winds down among the biggest pending decisions the limits of presidential immunity. the question stems from a case brought by donald trump, who wants immunity from charges related to the 2020 election. in another case, a man allegedly involved in the capitol riot on january 6th to 2021 says he's been improperly charged with obstruction. the court's decision could affect charges against more than 350 other january 6th defendants. the high court must also decide whether hospitals and states with abortion bans are required by federal law to perform emergency abortions, and in another case, the justices will decide if a city can ban homeless folks from sleeping in public when no

shelter space is available. if not tomorrow, decisions are expected friday. >> the new owner of san francisco's transamerica pyramid is being sued in a case that could put the reopening of the property in jeopardy. the lawsuit accuses the owner of bad business practices and misleading the public about a new private club set to open inside of the building. he's being sued by core holdings, the company that was set to operate that members only club. among other demands. the lawsuit seeks to recover more than $600 million in damages. the building's owners attorney responded in a statement, calling the lawsuit a desperate attempt to bail out of the owners of core club from fulfilling their obligations. santa barbara santa barbara county authorities are investigating a strange series of crimes involving hidden cameras found in the yards of homes. >> investigators released a photo of one of the cameras that was found. gardeners discovered it along with a battery pack, a power cord and a memory card inside. they say it was buried

in a landscaped area of the front yard and pointed at the house. authorities believe the cameras are linked to a crime tourism group from south america , watching to see when people leave home. >> the east bay is home to the only local pizzeria to make it on a new york times list of the best pizza places in the u.s, the times says. rose pizzeria on berkeley's university avenue stands apart from the rest. rose's owners say they were surprised, just like everybody else. >> we're humbled and we're stoked, but it's going to come with a lot of challenges. we can only cook six pizzas at a time, and we only have 42 seats. so if you're planning on coming by rose pizzeria, make a reservation and it might be a while to six pizzas at a time. >> apparently the crust is strong enough that you can hold on to your slice single handed without any pizza flop. rose pizzeria's website says they serve whole pizzas only. no slices of zaire and the pies are

cooked on the well-done side, so it's going to have a nice crunch to it. >> wow. all right, i'll try it. all right. now to our forecast. >> yeah. let's check in now with abc seven weather anchor spencer christian. hey, spencer. >> okay, jillian. and i'm just going to get hot enough to cook pizzas outside next week. but right now, things are fairly comfortable. we've got a nice breezy onshore flow, which is typical for this time of the year. at this time of the night and looking closely at the wind speeds, you can see it's not really area wide. we've got strong breezes in san francisco, 2220 three mile per hour winds over in fairfield, 22 mile per hour winds. most of the remainder of the bay area is looking at wind speeds at about 1015 degrees uh- degrees miles per hour, or lower. here's the view from mount tam, looking down onto the bay under clear skies 56 degrees here in san francisco right now. oakland 57 low 60s at hayward, san jose, redwood city at 54 at half moon bay and the view from emeryville unobstructed by clouds looking toward the bay bridge. 58 santa rosa right now 54 petaluma. we have low 60s at napa, fairfield

and concord. livermore 58 degrees. and now let's check out our forecast headlines into the weekend. we'll have a nice warm seasonal pattern, but on sunday gets a little bit warmer. but it's going to be a nice mild day here in san francisco for the sf pride parade. but early next week as july arrives, so will excessive heat in our inland areas. it's going to be a real scorcher. so let's move along and whoops, well, that just sort of fell in there. and let's move along now and take a look at the overnight conditions. we'll see some low clouds developing along the coastline, pushing locally out over the bay maybe between midnight and about 5 a.m. or so. but those clouds will pull back to the coastline quickly tomorrow morning leading up to a sunny day. overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the low to mid 50s. highs tomorrow will range from upper 50s at the coast to mainly low and mid 70s around the bay shoreline to mid and upper 80s inland. so it's going to be warm tomorrow, but not hot. but the hot weather is coming our way. here's the accuweather seven day forecast leading into the weekend. it'll just be a nice mild to warm pattern. sunny skies, high temperatures, maybe hitting around 9092 degrees in
