housing project approved a years long battle in half moon bay appears to be over and farm workers are calling it a victory. >> but first, flames tearing through a warehouse in the east bay. the warning for people who live nearby. >> and tonight, a historic debate between a sitting president and a former president. what to expect on stage. >> good morning to you. it's thursday, june 27th. >> we want to start with a check of our forecast with drew. >> yeah, a pleasant afternoon on the way this morning, though. we are seeing more cloud cover developing over the last 30 minutes or so. this is a live look from our east bay hills camera. just about 30 minutes ago you could see a big portion of the bay shoreline. now some of that fog has redeveloped this morning and you look at your current sky condition and we are seeing a mix of sun and clouds out there this morning. the afternoon will be bright. it will be breezy, very similar to yesterday. so current temperatures right now. some of our cooler valleys, like santa rosa coming in in the 40s, but most of us are starting our morning in the 50s right now. so look at the forecast inland. we'll have temperatures in the

mid and upper 80s. lots of sunshine out there. breezy this afternoon. very similar to yesterday around the bay shoreline. those winds are stronger. we'll have gusts between 15 and 25mph. and those daytime highs you see by 4 p.m. upper 60s to the lower 70s. then along the coast this is the area that will see the strongest winds today, likely between 20 and 40mph. so a wind whipped here. temperatures today in the upper 50s to lower 60s with partly cloudy skies later on. this afternoon. let's check in with sue. see how our drive times are this morning. >> good morning. and we have got the metering lights on at the bay bridge. so it's a bit of a delay. not too bad at this point. once you're on the span things are moving well past the tunnel on the eastbound side. we had an accident and that was right near t. hopefully that's been pushed out of lanes at this point. pop into san jose, 280 at the 17 880 overcrossing. everybody is at the limit here. no delays. it's a seven minute drive from downtown san jose to cupertino. let's take a look at some of our slower spots, always

across the altamont pass with high winds expected this morning as well. and we'll check on an accident near the coliseum when we come back. >> thanks to a three alarm fire that broke out overnight at a supply company warehouse in oakland is now contained. the burn first ignited around 10 p.m. last night on the roof of a building on 24th street. fire crews were able to stop the flames from spreading from the main building to the yard just after midnight. residents who live close by are still advised to keep their windows closed because of all the smoke still in the area. a grass fire in contra costa county is 75% contained. the fire grew rapidly yesterday afternoon, burning 255 acres in about two hours. this is near the antioch brentwood border. it started along deer valley road near residential community. it had plenty of dry grass for those flames to feed on. firefighters use bulldozers and fire retardant to keep the flames from reaching homes. you can see how close it got. no kidding.

>> new developments in half moon bay, where this morning farm workers and advocates are celebrating a big win last night, the city council denied three appeals trying to stop an affordable housing development from going up the complex on kelly avenue will serve low income senior farm workers. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez has been following the story for us and gloria. the project is moving forward after extensive debate. >> yes, last night's half moon bay city council meeting was contentious as supporters and opponents of the farm worker housing project spoke. the development will be a five story, 40 unit complex on kelly avenue in the city's downtown business district. will also include a resource center for farm workers and some parking on the first floor. supporters say the development addresses dire housing conditions that coast side farm workers currently face, especially after the deadly 2023 mass shooting at two farms that exposed their living conditions. but opponents argue the project was too big and would create traffic bottlenecks . >> something more appropriate.

please, not this project. it's too big. >> the only way we're going to be able to house more people is to go up. >> we don't want to suffer anymore. please, let's keep forward with 5-5-5 kelly. >> the council dismissed the appeals for the project, clearing the path for it to proceed. this is one of the final steps in a long and delayed process to get this project going. you may remember that half moon bay's planning commission was accused of moving too slowly on the project, and it even caught the attention of governor gavin newsom, who threatened to intervene if the commission did not act. the commission gave the project conditional approval in may, and the next steps now are a leasing agreement for the property. nonprofit alas and mercy housing have been working on this, and supporters say they are over the moon with the city council's decision last night. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you, gloria. new developments this morning on san francisco's budget critical

funding amounting to $60 million, has been restored to some programs. mayor london breed originally proposed cuts to child care, food insecurity and violence prevention programs. funding for many of those programs has now been saved. supervisors gave final approval yesterday to a nearly $16 billion budget deal with the mayor. the budget also protects the mayor's proposed spending to revitalize downtown. now across the bridge, across the bay bridge, oakland is facing a historic $200 million budget deficit. the deadline to pass a new budget just three days away. city council members are focusing on the finance department's amendments to mayor sheng tao's budget. it includes $63 million in cuts that may include freezing 100 police officer positions and 41 civilian staff for fire stations may also be on the chopping block. council president nikki fortunato bass is demanding an audit of the city's assets. >> when we get to our budget discussions on friday, there is a policy directive in my budget

amendments so that we can do an inventory of our assets and those needs over the next ten years. >> there also concerns the sale of the oakland coliseum may not be finalized in time for that money to be used in this new budget. >> one week ago today, the fbi raided the home of oakland mayor xiang tao. she has still not taken any questions about the raid, and has only made two public appearances since the second one came yesterday in san francisco at a meeting of the metropolitan transportation commission. tao serves as a commissioner on the body's board, and she voted on several measures. she eventually left the meeting early, but tao's legal troubles and oakland's ongoing budget issues were mentioned. >> that's why i'm calling for the resignation from your committee of mayor chen tao so we can have a good committee. okay. thank you very much. >> earlier this week, mayor tao said she would not let last week's raid distract from her duties. abc seven news is working every day to uncover new details in the fbi investigation. if you want to take a deeper dive, check out

allegedly involved in the capitol riot on january 6th, 2021, says he's been improperly charged with obstruction. the court's decision could affect charges against more than 350 other january 6th defendants. the high court must also decide whether hospitals and states with abortion bans are required by federal law to perform emergency abortions. the court accidentally released a draft opinion on this yesterday, suggesting the court will allow emergency abortions to continue. the draft was removed and the court said its final decision has not been released. and in another case, the justices will decide if a city can ban unhoused people from sleeping in public when no shelter space is available. if not today, decisions are expected tomorrow. new developments in the 2022 massacre at a july 4th parade in highland park, illinois. the suspected shooter has refused a plea deal. robert crimo, the third, reportedly had agreed to

the deal. it involved pleading guilty to seven counts of murder and 48 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, but instead the 23 year old rejected it yesterday and will now go to trial. the decision shocked the packed courtroom. >> all i wanted was to be able to fully grieve my mom without the looming trial, knowing that he was going to spend the rest of his life in jail. >> i was hoping for closure. i that's what you know. that was my the goal for today to just be done with this. >> investigators say crimo planned the attack for weeks before hiding on a rooftop and shooting into the crowd below. a motive remains unclear, and if convicted, crimo faces life in prison without parole. developing news uc berkeley will expand its antisemitism education this fall semester. the new requirement will be for all incoming students, leaders of student groups and residential assistants, university officials say the school will fund its anti-semitism, education initiative for at least five

years this change comes after a year when allegations of antisemitism have soared at cal and other college campuses following hamas attack on israel. back in october, san francisco's 54th annual lgbtq pride celebration and parade just days away, sf pride kicked off the festivities yesterday and our very own drew tuma, the emcee for the event. >> he helped announce the community grand marshals for this weekend. the pride parade preview party was held at the lgbt community center in the city. this year's theme is beacon of love. now, even though pride weekend is days away, it is going to be missing one of the biggest events that we usually see the annual dike march at dolores park has been canceled this year. this event typically happens the day before the big pride parade to honor women of the lgbtq plus community. the official march is canceled, but people still plan to show up for the party at the park. >> there might be like little things that are going to happen, like people are probably going to, like, put things together themselves, maybe with friends,

have stuff going on at the park. but, yeah, i'm i wish it wasn't canceled. >> organizers haven't given a reason why the march has been canceled. sf pride officials say taking this year off could bring more people to the march next year. >> and transit agencies are offering extra services on sunday for the parade. >> bart will open at 8 a.m. and will run five line service every five minutes through san francisco. caltrain will operate four northbound special event trains departing from san jose diridon station, starting at 8:10 a.m, and sf bay ferry will have extra service. the first vallejo ferry departs at 815 in the morning. the first oakland and alameda ferry departs at 8:30 a.m. of course, abc7 is the official station for the san francisco pride parade. our coverage kicks off sunday at 10 a.m. the parade starts at 1030 and will still be led by dikes on bikes. of course, you can see it wherever you watch abc7 news and the parade weather should be great, right, drew? >> yeah. >> nothing's changed. nothing's

changed. if anything, temperatures keep going 1 or 2 degrees warmer. >> bring it up. which is what we love, to bring it up. >> so let's talk about the weekend. we'll kick it off here on friday in the city. mid 60s, mostly sunny. and then you can see those temperatures start to warm even more. the weekend, both saturday and sunday were probably close to 70 degrees for daytime highs. so looking at the parade itself on sunday, of course you want that jacket in the morning and in the afternoon, but in between the middle part of the day you'll find warm sunshine, 2 p.m. temperatures closing in on 70 degrees with a lot of sunshine. so the forecast is really looking fantastic over the weekend outside this morning we'll take you to walnut creek, where we have mostly sunny conditions. from this view, we are dealing with clouds along the coast. it is breezy already in the city and those winds very similar to yesterday. the onshore flow is back with us for another day. just the pattern we're in and we'll see those winds about 20 to 30mph, except along the coast. the coast could see winds closer to 40mph throughout the afternoon, so highs today we are close to

>> reggie sue, thank you. this morning we're learning about a historic bust just ahead of the 4th of july. these boxes fill with 75 tons of illegal fireworks. they were uncovered over the weekend at a warehouse in gardena in southern california. police say the discovery is double the size of the previous largest bus in 2021. the estimated street value up to 10 million bucks. >> it's unbelievable. i mean, that's an astronomical amount of fireworks and the results of that could have been insane. >> three people were arrested. authorities believe the fireworks were imported from china. they say anyone involved with illegal fireworks can face a fine of up to $50,000 or jail time. four months after a fishing boat ran aground in bodega bay. salvage crews have completed recovery of the vessel. powerful waves in february ripped the aleutian storm ship apart with pieces of it littering the beach at bodega dunes state park. the press democrat reports. crews discovered a slab of steel along

the bottom of the vessel. it was extremely heavy and may have anchored the ship to the ground, which is why it was so difficult to move. the coast guard is still investigating why the ship ran aground. new details about the moment a man missing for ten days in the santa cruz mountains got found by rescue crews, while several units were sent out to help find the missing man. it was a search and rescue dog that ended up being the first to find lucas mcleish. state park ranger brett weber says his dog, rhino is the true hero. >> we had a really steep hillside on the right side of us. that rhino wanted to pull to a few times, and in training where i say trust your dog. and so i was like, if he wants to pull up that, there's probably a reason i'm going to trust him on this one. >> look at that. weber and rhino had been led to the area by a drone. the sound of shouts helped the pair finally locate the missing hiker. weber gave the credit of the find to rhinos instincts and macleish's ability to shout for help. next, at 630, another holiday, another

in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you so much, gloria. >> now, poultry and dairy farm workers in san mateo county can now get free equipment to protect them from the bird flu. the county says it is participating in a state program that provides personal protective equipment, including n95 masks. operators of poultry and dairy farms, as well as community groups, may request a 30 day supply of ppe for workers by sending an email to the san mateo county health department. there are no known bird flu cases in humans or cattle to date in california. >> the new owner of san francisco's transamerica pyramid is being sued in a case that could put the reopening of the property in jeopardy. the lawsuit accuses the owner of bad business practices and misleading the public about a new private club set to open inside the building. he's being sued by core holdings, the company that was set to operate that members only club, among other demands. the lawsuit seeks to recover more than $600 million in damages. the building's owners the building's

just before two this morning. they searched the area. they could not find him. about two hours later, at 415, a body washed up the firefighter's identity has not been released yet. san diego officials say oakland fire officials are currently traveling to san diego. we do have calls into the oakland fire department to get more information about what happened, and we will let you know when we do have more 45 hours. >> that's how much time bay area drivers spent sitting in traffic last year. the findings come from a global traffic scorecard. inrix looked at the u.s. cities with the worst traffic. the san francisco bay area ranks number 13. the report shows the typical driver lost 45 hours to traffic congestion in 2023. that's more than a full workweek and resulted in more than $730 worth of time lost. that's pretty bad, but drivers in new york had it. the worst ranking number one on the list. the typical driver in the big apple spent 101 hours in

backups last year, and one of the bay area's most congested commutes is about to get better. the mtc voted to fund nine traffic improvement projects along the dumbarton bridge corridor, to the tune of $130 million. the lion's share will go to rebuilding the 1970s era highway 101 interchange at woodside road. other projects include four miles of new bike and pedestrian paths connecting caltrain to the new ferry terminal, planned for redwood city, and in union city, a new four lane street will be built from mission boulevard to paseo padre in fremont as part of the quarry lakes parkway project. >> tolls on the golden gate bridge are going up starting july 1st. the fast track rate jumps $0.50 to 925. the invoice rate increases from 975 to 1025. the carpool rate is also going up to 725. fares on golden gate busses and ferries, also going up by almost $0.25 for most

trips. so if you take the san francisco bay, ferry, fares are increasing by a dime each way. the ferry authority approved the increase last year. tickets to ride special ferry boats to oracle park will also cost a bit more. p-g-and-e's bills are set to drop in july, so that's good news. but the bad news is it may just be temporary. the utility says it will stop collecting temporary charges used to cover emergency storm responses and other projects, reducing bills anywhere from 7 to 9% for the average customer, that's about 20 bucks, but those rates could go up again if the california puc approves p-g-and-e's proposed rate payer increases, which would cover other storm response costs and wildfire prevention work. >> one hospital in north texas is stepping into the future with doctors who aren't really there. the hollow box is holographic technology that allows doctors to show up in 3d to their patients. the tech is originally from the netherlands. the box

stands more than seven feet tall. hospitals hope this will help doctors be able to see more patients and reduce overall wait times. there are goals to grow the program and build more hollow boxes in doctors offices and homes. >> this morning, two giant pandas are headed to the san diego zoo from china. i almost said san francisco. i'm looking into the future. sing bao is a four year old female. she's described as gentle and well behaved. yinchuan is an almost five year old male, known to be smart and lively. the pandas are on loan from china as part of an agreement finalized in february. the san diego zoo is currently the only california zoo to house them. but as i was almost alluding to san francisco's next in line, if we can raise the money needed to build their habitat, then they should be coming next year. a special 25th anniversary for oakland's warriors basketball academy. steph curry made a surprise visit at that basketball camp at the oakland facility. he gave high fives to all the kids. then the kids got to watch him
