tonight. it's the grand lighting ceremony for the pride weekend rainbow laser light display. this is right in front of the ferry building. organizers say this year's illuminate will will project 20 multicolored lasers down the entire four mile stretch of market street in san francisco. it celebrates 20 years of marriage equality in the city. they're calling it the world's largest pride flag. the lasers will stay on from dusk until dawn for three nights, and an upwards of a million people are expected to be at san francisco's pride parade on sunday. >> the state of pride was the topic of the second annual human rights summit at the commonwealth club yesterday. abc seven news is the official media sponsor. there were conversations about racial justice and the fight against anti-trans legislation, so the state of pride, you know, is very complicated. >> question and answer. i think we do need to recognize our roots in our history and remember why we do it. but also we can celebrate. and part of that celebration is radical joy. >> pride. organizers say there

sunny skies, we have mild temperatures, and then after the weekend, we really want to alert you to a heat wave that is coming. and this heat wave has the potential to last at least five days. next week is going to be very hot. we'll talk about that in one second. winds today not as strong as the past couple of days. yes, it will be breezy, but the winds are on the order of about 15 to 25mph today, so certainly not one of our stronger winds we've seen this week. but it will be a breezy afternoon. highs today a bit above average, 60s and 70s close to the coast, 80s and 90s in our warmest spots. even along the coast, just like the past couple of days. yes, we start out with cloud cover. we will get a lot of sunshine out there and it will feel warm later on today. the evening planner friday night you got things to do. no problems. we'll have really mild temperatures in most areas and mainly clear skies, clouds reappear along the coast closer to about 10:00 overnight tonight. mix of stars and clouds after midnight and lows dipping into the 50s for the most part. now, as we show you what's going to happen over the weekend,

says that the forecast is that oakland will face a deficit for the next five years, whether or not the coliseum deal closes, there are $63 million in potential budget cuts, mostly to the general fund. cuts may include 100 police jobs by freezing positions, closing four fire stations and some funding cut to violence prevention programs. uc berkeley professor dan lindheim is the former oakland city administrator, and he says oakland's financial health may not be as dire as the numbers suggest. >> oakland has about 400 other funds, and so the other things are not at difficulty. it's only the general fund. >> but professor lindheim says that oakland's leadership, dating back several years, should have been more prudent in spending tax revenues, and that would offset periods of drops in revenue such as now, the oakland

city council is set to have a special meeting to pass the budget today, but council members say they will likely ask for an extension until june 30th. live in the studio gloria rodriguez abc seven news. >> gloria. thank you. new developments the first criminal charges have been made against law enforcement for the uvalde school shooting that happened back in 2022. a grand jury indicted former school district police chief pete arredondo. he faces ten charges of child endangerment. he claims he never considered himself the scene incident commander, and that officers prioritized evacuating the children over taking down the shooter. the justice department found officers did not follow generally accepted practices in an active shooter situation. the families of the victims believe other officers need to be charged, but there are still 374 other officers that did nothing while our children died, and they're getting to walk scot free. >> as of right now. >> arredondo surrendered last night and was released on

$10,000 bond. another former officer was also indicted. the massacre at robb elementary left 19 children and two teachers dead. >> we're learning more about the oakland firefighter who drowned on a san diego beach. we broke the story first on abc seven mornings yesterday. 25 year old kaden lafon was visiting the area for the california firefighter summer games. police say they responded to a report of a lost swimmer at pacific beach near crystal pier, around 2 a.m. thursday. they searched the area and two hours later, kaden's body washed up. caden's family is deeply embedded in the oakland fire department. his father was oakland's assistant fire chief, shawn lafon. the 42 year old died of a heart attack in the line of duty in 2020. >> they've suffered such great loss, you know, it's almost incomprehensible how much loss you can really suffer and still remain standing. >> that was oakland's fire chief saying that he will be traveling to san diego to help bring kaden

home. >> in the east bay, a newark city council member abruptly resigned, effective immediately. >> on facebook, mike boogie explained his family's decision, writing, unfortunately, we're just the next people in a long line of folks who have been priced out of town. we tried to buy a home a number of times over the years, but it never happened for us. now the window has closed and any chance we had to stay in newark is long past. boogie was first elected to the newark city council in november 2014, and last night the newark city council decided to invite applicants to fill the seat until a special election can be held in november. >> so this is an unprecedented for councils to fill these positions. and if we want to continue to do the people's business without pause or delay, i think we need to fill that position. >> the council will hold a special meeting on july 8th to interview the applicants and confirm their selection. >> a new tentative budget deal

could save san francisco's community ambassador program. if this passes, the program of 60 ambassadors will continue to operate despite previous plans to scrap it, and the mayor's budget proposal. these are the people you've seen around the city wearing the neon green, addressing language and cultural barriers, and promoting safety. the community ambassadors have been doing this since 2010. local politicians and residents started a campaign ahead of the budget deadline in an effort to uphold the program. >> a relative of the family of four killed at a san francisco bus stop is suing the 78 year old driver in the crash. it's been more than three months since the crash in west portal, with no charges filed against the driver. now, the family member is filing this wrongful death suit seeking damages, the sfmta reports said the driver was on the wrong side of the road and speeding before she hit the family. investigators have been looking into possible mechanical failure as san francisco grocery store is reportedly closed this morning
