every time you get a chance to embrace what's wonderful and beautiful in life, you got to do it. >> it is pride weekend in san francisco and the festivities are well underway tonight. the castro district packed ahead of tomorrow's parade. good evening. i'm j.r. stone. the pride parade is the one of the marquee events of pride weekend. but the festivities have been going on all weekend long. for some, this year's pride festivities take on political importance as well as lgbtq rights remain under threat

across the country. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has the story from san francisco's castro district. >> these are the symbols that make san francisco symbolic of pride across the country. the official dike march may have been canceled, but a contingent did make its way through the castro. barbara morton and her wife, arlene johnson, say they've been marching for the past 25 years. >> everything has changed over the years and we've won. some felt like we won some battles where we felt a little more protected in this country. and then i feel like, yeah, the possibility exists that we might lose some. and is it concerning? of course. yeah sure. >> morton is concerned that the united states political landscape is shifting to the right, which threatens women's rights and control over their bodies. they say that's why coming out this year is extra important. it's to send a strong political message. >> it's important to come back

and go. separation of church and state. and we're all people. and where love is, god is. there's a lot of things to celebrate and to react in a positive way to. reporter. >> the crowds poured into the castro with the usual fanfare and rainbow themed outfits. tony harris set up a sidewalk shop selling pride themed dog clothes. >> there's a spirit out here that you feel and a connection of people and, you know, hearing the word love and speaking to strangers because it is here and it is real. >> cliff's variety store is a staple in the castro. it's been open more than 80 years. their wigs and fabrics are in high demand this time of year. >> this is a very busy day. one of the busiest of the year beyond the fever, says foot traffic is up with lots more foreign tourists. >> he says pride is a big draw, in part because san francisco provides a place where people can feel safe and it's always been home to free thinkers, people who, you know, have

expressed their opinions in different ways. >> and it's just been always tolerated here. >> saturday night, city hall was lit up pink to mark pride weekend, and in anticipation of sunday's grand parade in san francisco, anser hassan. abc seven news. >> the party got going earlier today at the civic center with the kickoff of the pride festival, which will be going on again tomorrow. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard talked to people celebrating and got tips from organizers about how to have a safe time to >> performers are keeping it real by bringing the oh so fabulous vibes to this year's pride festival. civic center was turned into a beacon of love, the theme of this year's pride. >> i am austin and i am from norcal austin, we're from red bluff, brought his biggest ally to pride, his mom, kristy. >> so what does pride mean to you guys? first of all, you. it's a celebration of like being who you are and who you want to

be and like just accepting everything and like, getting everybody to be so open and honest. >> you love who you love. >> that's all you need. >> this gathering also brought some tasty food because calories don't count at pride, right? >> this is a fish and chips and my cousin wanted the carne asada fries with no pico de gallo. >> you could tell people are happy. there's already thousands of people in here. >> pride organizers say 400,000 people are expected to party here this weekend, and well over a million may come out for sunday's pride parade down market street, one of the biggest lgbtq gatherings in the world. >> the weather is going to be good. first off, bring a lot of water. everybody hydrate because it's going to be warm. warmer than normal in san francisco. so hydrate. >> pride is definitely something to cheer about. a chance to celebrate freedom, equality and being your true self in san francisco. cornell bernard abc seven news. >> looks like a fun time. here's

what you need to know about tomorrow's san francisco pride parade. it starts at 1030. it begins at the intersections of beale and market, goes a mile and a half down market street, then ends at eighth street. the celebration area is at civic center plaza. there are multiple road closures, so plan accordingly or take public transportation into the city. traffic is expected to be heavy. some streets will be closed all day tomorrow. if you can't be there in person, celebrate with abc seven and watch the parade live wherever you are. abc seven is the official station for the san francisco pride parade. our coverage begins at 10 a.m. see it wherever you watch abc seven. it was a fantastic weather day on this saturday. take a look at santa cruz, where people filled the beach near the boardwalk. there parts of the bay area probably wished they were near the beach. with the temperatures that we saw in many areas today. but what about tomorrow? we've got the big pride parade in san

francisco that we touched on earlier. spencer christian joins us now with your accuweather forecast. >> okay, jr, it will be just as lovely tomorrow, especially here in san francisco where the parade is taking place. so let's take a look at the forecast. it's going to be mainly sunny throughout the day. a few lingering low clouds in the morning. not many though. it will be breezy as well, but i'm talking about a mild, gentle breeze 63 degrees around 10:00 in the morning between noon and 2 p.m. look for temperatures here in san francisco to range from 67 up to about 70 degrees, and it will get breezier going into the afternoon as well. then in the late afternoon, a high of about 72 here in san francisco with wind speeds around 10 to 12mph. just a lovely day now all across the bay area. tomorrow it's going to be mild to warm, but some of our inland areas reaching into the mid 90s. but as we move into next week, it is going to become dangerously hot. so hot. in fact, they will have an excessive heat watch in effect from tuesday morning to friday night. i'll give you a closer look at that and the forecast for next week in a few minutes j.r.

>> spencer thank you so much. new developments tonight in a case that lit up phones and road signs across the bay area this morning, chp says the newborn baby at the center of an amber alert is safe. investigators say the child's mother took off with her 14 day old baby boy, and they were worried for his safety. tonight, vallejo police tell us that everyone is safe and okay in the south bay, firefighters battled flames in the hills of east san jose. tonight, an abc seven viewer sent us this video of the fire on balcom road, san jose. fire says the flames are now under control, but firefighters will continue mopping up for a couple of hours to make sure that the fire is completely out. tonight firefighters are making progress on a wildfire that began in el dorado county this afternoon. all evacuation warnings and orders have been lifted near the community of greenwood, west of i 80. state highway 193 was reopened. the fire is now 25%

contained and has burned 16 acres. this is video of the largest wildfire burning in california right now, the basin fire in the sierra national forest near fresno exploded to more than 9500 acres by this afternoon. it is 0% contained. the fire started on wednesday after several fires in the area burned from lightning that struck days before. on monday. fire crews are facing hot and dry weather and smoke is impacting air attack resources. >> they were up today, but the inversion did interfere with plans and what that does is the smoke prevents visibility. we're really concerned about the forest infrastructure, the campgrounds and the trails and the places that people come and enjoy. >> the fire has forced several campgrounds and trails to shut down. there are no reports of any structures damaged. worsening wildfires in the bay area are brutal for wine grape growers. there's new help to protect them from losses due to

smoke damage. grape growers lost hundreds of millions of dollars in 2020, and the start of this fire season is already rough. wineries south of lake sonoma are still dealing with smoke and fire retardant damage from the point fire earlier this month. >> i'm still in shock that it it uh- it actually devastated the property as much as it did, but i am just so grateful that we didn't lose anything else. >> the us department of agriculture will roll out a wildfire smoke coverage option to insurance policies, starting in the 2025 crop year. growers won't have to document their losses. they'll get paid out based on the number of intense smoke days in their county. new at 11 governor newsom has signed a bill that will allow restaurants to keep putting surcharges on diners bills. however, the fees must be

clearly communicated to the customer. the bill was in response to another law that takes effect monday, banning so-called hidden junk fees that might appear on a hotel bill or when you buy tickets to a concert, it is a win for the restaurant industry, which has argued that fees are often necessary to help pay workers who might not normally receive a tip. at least five people are under arrest following a huge fight this afternoon near the santa monica pier in southern california. two people went to the hospital and police say one of them was stabbed during the brawl. as many as 20 people or more were involved. it's not clear at this point what started that fight. still ahead on abc seven news at 11. remembering a giants legend. fans pay tribute to the great orlando cepeda. and fireworks are allowed in some bay area cities where they are legal and the caution being urged by firefighters also a little later. building a better union square, san francisco is

to pay their respects to the forever giant orlando cepeda. today, many stopped to place flowers on his statue at second and king or to reflect on the reflect that is on the legacy of the hall of famer, affectionately known as the baby bull. cepeda passed away yesterday at the age of 86. he debuted with the giants in 1958, their first year in san francisco. >> my dad passed on the seventh and then willie mays passed four days later. and then orlando

passed. so, i'm feeling all the emotions right now, like i said, the giants are a huge part of my family growing up and orlando and willie are just like. i mean, the icons for me and my dad. >> a week from monday on july 8th, a public celebration of life will be held at oracle park for willie mays. it starts at 4 p.m. gates open at willie mays plaza at 3 p.m. it's going to cost a little more to cross the golden gate bridge. starting on monday. fares will rise by $0.50 to help address a budget deficit. they will go up every year for the next four years. if you have fast track, it is going to cost $9.25. for those who have a pay as you go account, it will be 950. toll increases are projected to create $139 million in revenue, but that still might not be enough to erase the deficit, which is pegged at around 220 million. for those

who ride golden gate transit or golden gate ferry, the fares are also going up on monday. they'll increase by a quarter, like the bridge they'll be going up every year until 2028. new developments about the san francisco home on russian hill that was on the market for $488,000, the chronicle reports. the sale of the three bedroom house is now pending, with an offer that is being accepted. the home went viral for the low price, with one big catch, the buyer would have to wait 30 years to move in. the chronicle reports that that no longer applies. the trustee of the home told the paper that he accepted an asking price offer from his sister. she lives in the house with their mom. this may be the beginning of a new tradition in san francisco's outer sunset district. down the great highway for the

inaugural oceanside 4th of july parade. city has not yet held an independence day parade since the bicentennial in 1976. two bands, 25 dancers, as well as several parents and kids took part. supervisor joel engardio organized the event because, he says, it is time. the city had its own 4th of july parade, an event like this tells the world, we are not a doom loop. >> it tells the world that we have a lot of joy and we're creating more of it. and we are imaginative or innovative, and we're going to create our best san francisco organizers had the parade today to make sure people who already made holiday plans could attend. >> the supervisor says the plan is to have this on july fourth next year. today people were out buying fireworks in pacifica ahead of the holiday. that's one of the few places in the bay area where you can legally purchase them. san bruno, dublin, newark city, gilroy, rio vista, suisun city, dixon and

cloverdale also legally sell so-called safe and sane fireworks. so far, sales in pacifica are going strong. >> our biggest sales right now is the atomic salsa we have. these have been going off the shelves, flying off the shelves. i've had to restock them like four times already. >> today's sale was an annual fundraiser for the pacifica sirens girls softball league. fire officials are urging people who buy safe and sane fireworks to be cautious while celebrating for the holiday. the personal safety is at risk and because of the high risk of the fire danger. yeah spencer christian joins me now. do you have an atomic salsa in your closet over there? have you gotten one? it looks like the hot item right now don't have anything like that. >> but i do have a hot item to report on. >> and that is concern. >> exactly. it's concerning. we're going to have low humidity and our regular gusty wind flow and very, very high temperatures. next week above

100 degrees in many locations. but right now it's pretty comfortable out there. here's a look at the satellite radar composite image. we've got our usual evening onshore flow a nice cooling onshore flow, not very strong though. it's not not as brisk as it was earlier in the evening. most wind speeds right now are below below ten miles per hour, but it's quite pleasant out there and several degrees warmer in most locations than it was at this time last night. so let's move along. take a look from sutro tower looking down on san francisco. it is 61 here in the city, 62 in oakland, hayward 64, san jose 6967. redwood city 52 at half moon bay. this is the view from emeryville. looking across the bay under clear skies. 73 at santa rosa, low 60s at petaluma and napa. upper 60s at fairfield. concord 76, livermore 70. and as we look out along the embarcadero from our rooftop camera, these are our forecast headlines. pride parade tomorrow will take place under sunny and mild conditions here in san francisco. the heat wave i was talking to jr about will be with us next week. we can expect excessive heat the entire week and as a result, an excessive

heat watch is in effect for the bay area from tuesday morning through friday evening, and many triple digit temperatures will be found across the entire region, not just the inland areas. it is quite possible some places closer to the bay may approach 100 degrees, but this is the warning of the excessive heat watch rather so warning for solano county. but for the rest of the bay area, it's an excessive heat. watch again in effect from tuesday morning to friday evening. under these dangerously hot conditions. over exposure to the heat, of course, can cause heat related illnesses. for tonight, though, things will be calm and pleasantly cool. we'll have a few high clouds swinging by, maybe a couple of patches of low clouds forming along the coastline. but not very deep marine layer there. so we'll start the day tomorrow with mainly sunny skies and a patch or two of low clouds. overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 6050s, rather up in the north bay. we'll see some 60 degree lows and that's pretty warm for an overnight low. highs tomorrow under mainly sunny skies. 60 at half moon bay, 71 in san

francisco, oakland 78. other locations near the bay shoreline will top out at around 8081 degrees, so it will be pretty warm there. and our inland areas will be warm as well. not quite hot though, but low to mid 90s will generally be the highs in the inland inland east bay and up in the north bay upper 80s to mid 90s. the highs as well. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. and look at the heat coming our way next week. july gets off to a sizzling start on monday with most of the inland areas. the hottest ones only hitting around 100 degrees. but look at tuesday and wednesday we're talking 108 to 110 in the hottest inland areas and not just 1 or 2 locations. there will be numerous communities with that kind of heat next week, thursday and friday and saturday, highs will reach up to about a 102, in places that will be up around 110. 110 on wednesday. still very hot weather and it's just holding on. it's just stubborn heat. it won't go away. so into next weekend, you certainly hope that the winds don't kick up. >> i know that's a even bigger concern when you mix that hot

it's been a tough stretch for the giants away from the diamond earlier this month, hall of famer willie mays died at the age of 93, and on friday, another hall of famer, 86 year old orlando cepeda, also passed away. two giants of the game on and off the field. fans left memorials at the respective statues as the giants donned both patches for mays and cepeda the rest of the season. the mays tribute also behind home plate. you see right there at oracle park, top of the second, we're tied at one. shohei ohtani with some weekend yardwork. national league leading 26 of the year goes to the garden center field. it's two one dodgers, but bottom three game tied at two two on for patrick bailey up the middle and through lamonte wade. junior scores as the giants take the lead. and they're using small ball in this inning. part of a four run inning matt chapman little bouncing ball to third and no play for the third

it comes to the number of passengers screened in one day. as for those who prefer to drive , they might have plenty of company on the roads. here's abc's johny fernandez. >> airlines are bracing for a record number of travelers over the 4th of july holiday. >> it seems pretty busy already coming in. the lines are moving, but it's definitely a lot of people. >> the tsa says it expects to screen 32 million passengers between thursday, june 27th and monday, july 8th. the agency believes it will set a new record, screening 3 million travelers in one day before all this july 4th, travel comes to an end. as always, travelers are advised to get to the airport at least two hours before the flight. the nation's roads are also expected to be crowded. triple a predicts more than 60 million people will be driving to their holiday destinations. the worst time to leave for that road trip between 2 and 8 p.m. the best time before 10 a.m. some good news, though, for drivers. gas prices are down about $0.05 from last year. the

national average for a gallon of gas is 350. the weather could put a damper on some of those travel plans, with storms heading into the northeast. >> a tornado watch has already been issued for parts of pennsylvania and ohio, along with the severe thunderstorm watch this line of storms rolling through overnight and then another line making its way to the east coast. the i-95 corridor, particularly tomorrow evening that could bring damaging winds along with a few tornadoes. >> heavy rains have already caused flooding in parts of the midwest, including minnesota and south dakota. roads in oak island, north carolina underwater after thunderstorms moved through. and in moab, utah , flash floods turned this highway into a waterfall. johnny fernandez abc news, new york we've been following the story of the dramatic number of store closures at san francisco's union square to make recovery easier and faster. >> nearly one year ago, the city changed zoning rules in the area. but it's that change. and

is that change helping to build a better bay area? abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez tells us. it's the only way to guarantee union square survival. >> union square was the shopping mecca of the bay area, always the place to be seen where demonstrators found a voice. bands entertained mayors held wine festivals, while another used it to launch his campaign, not to mention a us president has been on the square. everyone found their way here, even a man and his rat. and the 1980s was unofficially the golden age of union square and city planners did their best to keep the office sector away. that person waving below is me because i want to show you how kearny street was once the dividing line between the financial district and union square, so office spaces stayed confined to that side of kearny, basically preventing them from entering union square. >> we wanted i think, as a city,

to really protect union square because it represented a global enterprise. >> but everyone knows a business district has to evolve to thrive and it took the city decades to finally own up to that. >> the idea that a flagship store needs two stories, you know, maybe even three, is very much outdated. >> larissa ortiz, a former new york city planning commissioner, was called in to help understand what was keeping union square from succeeding. >> we uncovered that some of the zoning codes were really a bit antiquated. they were legacy codes for a time, you know, that no longer existed. >> so in the past, the old zoning laws determined that a landlord with three leasable floors could only rent that space to one company. >> you needed three levels of retail or whatever it was. and so why not get, you know, do away with that and instead create flexibility and say, what is it that you want to do? i

just want this on the first floor and maybe something else on the second floor and maybe something different on the third, or i just want the first. excellent. let's make that work for you both. >> mayor london breed and supervisor aaron peskin came up with the legislation to change the zoning laws here, which the board of supervisors then approved a year ago. how many businesses do you have on the books? >> yeah, so i think that we take advantage of these new zoning laws we're hearing, which we weren't hearing last year, you know, wow, the tours are picking up. people are interested, they're sniffing around. they want to know what what they can do here. and apparently they're getting some some deals done right from deal making to opening can be a year. it could be two years, right? takes time. >> so we really don't know how many businesses have taken advantage of the code changes. we know they work to make new york city's wall street financial area facing a massive exodus following nine over 11, the city allowed for a radical change from office only spaces

tens of thousands of people came out for the annual pride parade through central london. this year's theme was we are everywhere, a showcase of the power of solidarity. one of the highlights was a massive rainbow flag that was carried along the route. the event was opened by london mayor sadiq khan, a firm supporter of lgbtq+ rights. we celebrate pride every day at abc seven news and during the month of june, we're recognizing groups and individuals who are letting their pride shine in the north bay. local historians are working to preserve the past of how and why members of the lgbtq community first flocked to sonoma county, and the russian river. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard takes a look. >> it was a perfect time of year for romance. >> tina duncan is reading a love letter written by north bay lesbian poet martha courtot. at that time, in early autumn, it's one of several items being

preserved at the sonoma county history and genealogy library. the region, world famous for its natural beauty, it also has a queer history which can't be ignored. >> people often ask, you know, why is sonoma county have so many gay people in it? >> duncan, a historian and instructor at santa rosa junior college, says the answer to that can be traced back to the 1930s through the 1970s, when some of the first lgbtq bars opened outside san francisco. there was tolerance and acceptance in terms of walking down the street, holding hands with your girlfriend. >> you could do it. >> it just was this more accepting spot. >> historian adam richmond is working with tina to compile their private archive collections, which they'll donate to the library. it documents lgbtq life in the russian river valley. adams says guerneville quickly became the so-called gay boomtown of the west. >> there were sometimes 30 or

40,000 gay and lesbian tourists in little old guerneville. >> and, it was a scene. it was a total scene. >> during summer months, bars and resorts on the russian river were hopping, including the rainbow cattle company, still doing business after six decades, he spent some time here. >> yes. everyone did. it was quite a scene. you could just hang out. there was endless drinks, cute bartenders. >> bob frederick is the bar's longtime co-owner on the city. >> it seems like men have their bars. the women have their bars. or here we all intermingle and we're all family. >> the aids crisis would pause the music for years. sonoma county's first lgbtq newspapers would document the crisis, including the fight for civil rights and recognition from local supervisors, who for years declined to recognize the contribution gays and lesbians made to the region. >> the community just kind of got fed up. we filled the board of supervisors chamber with like 250 people and outraged that it

of the season prior. >> kim trinidad is the warriors vp of marketing and operations. she's been working on building bobbleheads for the team since 2018. every idea starts with a sketch from those sketches we take it to mold development, so these are unpainted samples where we get a sense of like, what the player is going to look like. >> are there features? correct. from there we go into painted samples, and that's really where we refine the details of the bobblehead, make sure the colors are correct, can add any additional embellishments and then from there we go into production and shipping. >> klay thompson has provided endless entertainment on and off the court on my way to work, leading to the creation of a personalized bobblehead series really leaning into his different personalities, as in moods and hobbies that he's taken on over the course of the seasons with us. >> we really leaned into that and brought those to life via bobblehead. so captain klay paper playing, klay headband,
