to you. it is sunday, june 30th. i'm gloria rodriguez and happy pride to you. we're about an hour and a half away from the san francisco pride parade. meteorologist lisa argen is here with your sunday forecast. and lisa, you and i took a nice walk this morning and it looks like it's going to be beautiful for the parade. >> it is gorgeous and there's like a party atmosphere, isn't there today because a lot of people out and about and why not? it's a beautiful start to your sunday where temperatures are in the low 60s downtown. the winds are light. they're going to pick up and the fog is going to come back by about noontime or before upper 60s by 12:00, and then by the afternoon, some low 70s. so gorgeous out there. right now we have clear conditions. you can see the fog is well to the south of us, but that will be changing in the next few hours. emeryville, nice and sunny right now. 66 san francisco. so came up a few degrees upper 60s in our inland valleys and look at that 78 there in concord. so we are much warmer than we were yesterday due to the light winds. enjoy today. it's the coolest day of
9:03 am
the workweek. there's a look at that fog sneaking up the san mateo coast mid 90s inland today, and we'll talk about our excessive heat warning coming up for tuesday. gloria. >> all right, lisa, thank you so much. well just hours from now, thousands of people will march through san francisco for the annual pride parade. it's one of the marquee events of pride weekend. but the festivities have been going on all weekend long. abc seven news reporter anser hassan talks to people about what this year's events mean to them. reporter >> these are the symbols that make san francisco symbolic of pride across the country, the official dike march may have been canceled, but a contingent did make its way through the castro. barbara morton and her wife, arlene johnson, say they've been marching for the past 25 years. >> everything has changed over the years and we've won. some felt like we won some battles where we felt a little more protected in this country. and then i feel like, yeah, the
9:04 am
possibility exists that we might lose some. and is it concerning? of course. yeah, sure. >> morton is concerned that the united states political landscape is shifting to the right, which threatens women's rights and control over their bodies. they say that's why coming out this year is extra important. it's to send a strong political message. >> it's important to come back and go. separation of church and state, and we're all people. and where love is, god is. there's a lot of things to celebrate and to react in a positive way to the crowds poured into the castro with the usual fanfare and rainbow themed outfits, tony harris set up a sidewalk shop selling pride themed dog clothes. >> there's a spirit out here that you feel and a connection of people and, you know, hearing the word love and speaking to strangers because it is here and it is real. >> cliff's variety store is a staple in the castro. it's been open more than 80 years. their wigs and fabrics are in high
9:05 am
demand this time of year. >> this is a very busy day, one of the busiest of the year. >> cleon the fever says foot traffic is up with lots more foreign tourists. he says pride is a big draw, in part because san francisco provides a place where people can feel safe and it's always been home to free thinkers, people who, you know, have expressed their opinions in different ways. >> and it's just been always tolerated here. >> saturday night, city hall was lit up pink to mark pride weekend, and in anticipation of sunday's grand parade in san francisco, anser hassan. abc, seven news and abc seven is proud to be celebrating pride all month and all year round. >> pride festivities are in full swing with the main event, the pride parade, coming up this morning. people are packing the streets for the 54th annual pride parade. organizers say more than a million spectators may come out for today's parade down market street. it is one of the biggest lgbtq plus
9:06 am
gatherings in the world, and right now we're joined live by the executive director of sf pride, suzanne ford. good morning suzanne. thank you so much for joining us today. >> good morning. thank you for having me. >> yeah. so happy pride. the big day finally here. how are you feeling right now? >> finally i'm elated i can't wait. this is my favorite part. i'm getting ready to walk down market street at the front of the parade and find families with trans flags and see the trans kids. it's my favorite part of the parade. >> yeah, well, could we expect today as far as all the festivities out there? >> well, we're going to start off at 1030, there will be a little bit over 225 uh- parade contingents, over 50,000 people will actually be in the parade. and then we'll move over to the celebration at the civic center. and we're going to have billy porter as a headliner on the main stage. >> exciting stuff. so of course, we know it's such an important part of san francisco. why is it so important for you personally
9:07 am
to celebrate pride? >> because i know as a child growing up in kentucky in the 1970s that i would see the parade once a year and i knew that someday, if i could get here, i could be me. and i think i want to make sure that that kids all over the country can say, see, lgbtq leaders. they can see the city of san francisco not tolerate us, but celebrate us. and they can see that here we live up to the values that our forefathers put out. we're going to all people are equal and we're going to be inclusive at sf pride, not tolerate but celebrate. >> i love that. and suzanne, you know, i was just outside. it looks like you're going to have a beautiful day for the parade. it's sunny out there, but maybe a little warmer than a lot of people are used to for san francisco. so any tips for people who are getting ready to head out the door pretty soon for the parade? >> yes. hydrate and bring a bring some extra water. make sure because it could be you know, the parade is 225 contingents. it's going to be a
9:08 am
long day out there. so make sure you're hydrated that you have some snacks with you and come to have a great time. >> yeah, layers are always good too, because it's a little chilly in the morning, may get a little warmer, and maybe that spf is always a good idea to. >> yeah, i'm going to shed this jacket, i'm sure somewhere down the parade route. >> yeah. for sure. well, thank you so much, suzanne. so great talking to you. happy pride. and we're really looking forward to the parade. >> yeah. happy pride. thank you so much. yeah. >> so here's what you need to know about today's san francisco pride parade. so as we mentioned, it all starts at 1030 in the morning. it begins at the intersections of beale and market. it goes a mile and a half down market street. and then it ends at eighth street. and the celebration area is at civic center plaza. there are multiple road closures, so plan accordingly or you can take public transportation into the city. traffic is expected to be heavy and also some streets will be closed all day long. so if you can't be there in person, celebrate with abc seven and watch the parade live wherever you are. abc seven is the

9:10 am
fire is still unclear right now. in the south bay, firefighters battled flames in the hills of east san jose. an abc seven viewer sent us this video of the fire on balcom road, san jose. fire says the flames are under control, but firefighters remained on scene overnight to make sure the fire is completely out and firefighters are making progress on a wildfire that began in el dorado county yesterday afternoon. all evacuation warnings and orders have been lifted near the community of greenwood, west of i 80. state highway 193 has reopened. the fire is now 25% contained and burned nearly 16 acres, worsening wildfires in the bay area are brutal for wine grape growers. there's new help to protect them from losses because of smoke damage. grape growers lost hundreds of millions of dollars in 2020, and the start of this fire season is already really rough. wineries south of lake sonoma are still dealing with smoke and fire retardant damage from the point

fire earlier this month. >> i'm still in shock that it it, it actually devastated the property as much as it did, but i am just so grateful that we didn't lose anything else. >> the u.s. department of agriculture will roll out a wildfire smoke coverage option to insurance policies, starting in the 2025 crop year. growers will not have to document their losses. they'll get paid out based on the number of intense smoke days in their county happening tomorrow. it's going to cost a little more to cross the golden gate bridge. fares will rise by $0.50 to help address a budget deficit. they will go up every year for the next four years. if you have fast track, it's going to cost $9.25. for those with a pay as you go account, it will be 950. the toll increases are expected to create $139 million in revenue, but that still might not be enough to raise the
9:12 am
deficit. that's pegged at about $220 million for those who ride golden gate transit or golden gate ferry. the fares are also going up tomorrow. they'll increase by a quarter. like the bridge. they'll be going up every year until 2028. now let's get a check of that forecast for this sunday. on this pride sunday with lisa. good morning lisa. >> hey gloria 66 degrees. there's a look at the pink triangle here in san francisco. it's 61 at the coast. and we've got 80s already inland. but believe it or not, today's the coolest day out of the next seven. we've got a heat wave that is going to get jump started tomorrow. hottest days of the week tuesday and wednesday. stay tuned. my accuweather seven day forecast is next. >> all right lisa thank you so much. and also ahead new laws take effect tomorrow. bars statewide are now required to have this item to test for date rape drugs and sale pending in san francisco. the offer being made on the house that originally required the buyer to move in 30 years from now. the

9:16 am
mixed results and reactions, and the july first bump in pay for health care workers will likely be delayed until october. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn takes a look at the minimum wage issue in our state. >> we do a lot of work for what we get paid for. >> laurie viramontes has been a health care worker. for more than two decades. she's a medical assistant on july 1st, health care workers in california are supposed to see their minimum wage bumped up to $25 an hour. that doesn't affect viramontes, but she says it will impact many other health care workers who don't make enough. >> i feel like in private practice, they overwork you and underpay you by far. >> they deserve to be compensated for all that work that they're doing. >> because california faces a $46 billion shortfall, state democrats agreed to delay the planned minimum wage bump for health care workers until october 15th. san francisco state professor john logan is chair of the labor and economics department. he says the minimum wage increase is needed. there's
9:17 am
a big problem with recruiting and retaining some health care workers. >> they're also doing it to try to make sure that we actually have the health care workers that we need now, and that we're going to desperately need in the future. >> in april, the state boosted the minimum wage up to $20 an hour for fast food workers. the owner of this mcdonald's at stonestown galleria says he made a gut wrenching decision to close this past weekend because of two reasons a disagreement on a lease term with the building's landlord and then the rising costs of running the restaurant, including the new state mandated $20 an hour minimum wage for fast food workers. chris thornberg is the founder of beacon economics. >> when you raise the minimum wage that either has to come out of the, the, the, the manager or the owners pocket or it gets passed on to the consumer in the form of a higher price. >> we're starting to see the impacts of higher minimum wages. thornberg believes there will be fewer restaurants. people will pay higher prices, and in the case of 16 to 19 year olds,
9:18 am
unemployment rates have increased. others say better wages are a must for people who serve and care for us, and the wage increases will pave the way for changes in other states and industries. in san francisco, suzanne phan, abc seven news. >> if you want to know what other state laws are taking effect tomorrow, we have you covered. we put a list together that you can read and share with your friends. it's on abc seven news.com. and now to the beginning of what could be a new tradition in san francisco's outer sunset district. take a look great highway for the inaugural oceanside 4th of july parade. the city has not held an independence day parade since the bicentennial. that was in 1976. you could see one of the two bands right there. there were also 25 dancers, as well as several parents and kids that took part. supervisor joel engardio organized the event because he says it's the time.
9:19 am
it's about time. the city had its own 4th of july parade, an event like this tells the world we are not a doom loop. >> it tells the world that we have a lot of joy and we're creating more of it. and we are imaginative or innovative, and we're going to create our best san francisco organizers had the parade to make sure that people who already had plans for the holiday could attend. >> the supervisor says the plan is to have this on july 4th next year. and on the peninsula, people were out buying fireworks in pacifica ahead of the holiday. that's one of the few places in the bay area where you can legally purchase them. san bruno, dublin union city and gilroy also legally sell so-called safe and sane fireworks, and so far sales in pacifica are going strong. >> our biggest sales right now is the atomic salsa we have. these have been going off the shelves, flying off the shelves. i've had to restock them like four times already.
9:20 am
>> and the sale was an annual fundraiser for the pacifica sirens girls softball league. fire officials are urging people who buy safe and sane fireworks to be cautious while celebrating not only for personal safety but also the high risk of fire danger. very important. well meteorologist lisa argen is tracking the forecast. and, lisa, we're counting down to the parade. pride parade is going to kick off pretty soon, so people are still figuring out what to wear. what do you suggest? >> it's beautiful out there right now. the winds are light. the winds are going to kick up though later on today, and we'll see some breezy to gusty winds at the coast and that fog is going to get pulled back into the san mateo county coastline. but right now it's all about the system to the north, just allowing for a very pleasant day here locally. once that system passes over us, it's all about high pressure building in and that heat dome coming back into play. there's a look at the fog southern california, and in the next couple of hours it will be
9:21 am
back. a little hazy look from our pier 39 camera. swung it around out towards alcatraz, where already 66 degrees downtown, 69, in oakland. it's 73. in hayward, low 60s half moon bay and 76 in san jose. beautiful view from our exploratorium camera. look how warm it is from the mid 70s in livermore, upper 70s in concord. we've got 80 in santa rosa, and in between some low 70s from petaluma and napa. so just a light breeze right now. sunny skies, mild conditions, low 70s on the way for the afternoon in san francisco with a steadily increasing sea breeze. then the headline for the week ahead is an excessive heat warning for all of our inland valleys, the interior hills and mountains, and a heat advisory for the bay shore. so far, san francisco and the coast. no advisories as you will be cooler with the influence of the marine air and mother nature's free ac. but many triple digits arriving certainly tuesday, maybe even
9:22 am
tomorrow. here's a look at how that fog is going to play into your sunday afternoon. here it is, 1130 and it's creeping up the coast. there from half moon bay to pacifica and then closing in there, allowing for that sea breeze to kick up. and it's going to get quite gusty right at our beaches. so right now it's pleasant. but as we get towards the one 2:00 hour, 25 miles an hour and then late in the day, maybe 30 plus miles an hour, here's a look at what the national weather service has posted for an excessive heat warning in pink. so that's essentially the entire bay area, except right along the bay. that's where it's a heat advisory. temperatures in the 80s to 90s. they're triple digits in the red. and then you'll notice that san francisco and the coast have been left out of that. but tuesday, check it out. one of the hottest days over 106 for you by the delta. maybe 110. hate to even say that. 102 in sonoma, 80s in oakland, san francisco's pleasant into wednesday, but look at that. 107 in livermore,
9:23 am
90 in mountain view, right on through the fourth. but guess what? fog free conditions for fireworks. although fire danger will be extremely elevated, so be very careful over the week ahead. and the holiday for many of you. for all of us. 92 and livermore 95. santa rosa today. so check out the trend. the accuweather seven day forecast. the heat wave begins tomorrow, then excessive heat warning as we get into tuesday and the advisory and as we go through the rest of the workweek, we actually probably will see the heat stick around into next weekend. more news after the break. >> enjoy the fireworks and save thousands with 1.9% during the july 4th sales event, new honda's with 1.9 gas or hybrid hybrids get 614 miles per tank. >> ask anyone who owns a honda and search your local honda dealer. >> hey brenda, two carts again? >> shopping for office and shopping for home. you know, one

9:26 am
seven news reporter lyanne melendez tells us. it's the only way to guarantee union square's survival. >> union square was the shopping mecca of the bay area, always the place to be seen where demonstrators found a voice. bands entertained, mayors held wine festivals, while another used it to launch his campaign. not to mention, a us president has been on the square. everyone found their way here, even a man and his rat. and the 1980s was unofficially the golden age of union square. and city planners did their best to keep the office sector away. that person waving below is me because i want to show you how kearny street was once the dividing line between the financial district and union square. so office spaces stayed confined to that side of kearny, basically preventing them from entering union square. >> we wanted, i think, as a city, to really protect union

square because it represented a global enterprise. >> but everyone knows a business district has to evolve to thrive, and it took the city decades to finally own up to that. >> the idea that a flagship store needs two stories, you know, maybe even three, is very much outdated. >> larissa ortiz, a former new york city planning commissioner, was called in to help understand what was keeping union square from succeeding. >> we uncovered that some of the zoning codes were really a bit antiquated. they were legacy codes for a time. you know, that no longer existed. >> so in the past, the old zoning laws determined that a landlord with three leasable floors could only rent that space to one company. >> you needed three levels of retail or whatever it was. and so why not get, you know, do away with that and instead create flexibility and say, what is it that you want to do? i just want this on the first
9:28 am
floor and maybe something else on the second floor and maybe something different on the third, or i just want the first. excellent. let's make that work for you both. >> mayor london breed and supervisor aaron peskin came up with the legislation to change the zoning laws here, which the board of supervisors then approved a year ago. how many businesses do you have on the books? >> yeah, so i think that take advantage of these new zoning laws we're hearing, which we weren't hearing last year. you know, wow, the tours are picking up. people are interested, they're sniffing around. they want to know what what they can do here. and apparently they're getting some some deals done right from deal making to opening can be a year. it could be two years, right? takes time. >> so we really don't know how many businesses have taken advantage of the code changes. we know they work to make. new york city's wall street financial area facing a massive exodus following nine over 11, the city allowed for a radical change from office only spaces to residential and new businesses, which today has led
9:29 am
to a thriving neighborhood. part of the revitalization of union square will depend on voters approving a bond measure, part of it going towards the powell street improvement plan. powell street, with its cable cars, have long been the gateway to union square. >> i really think with focus attention, the right investment union square can be back in a year and a half. we will see it in san francisco. >> leon melendez, abc seven news. >> and stay with us still to come on abc seven mornings reggie aqui is live from the parade route with details about abc seven's parade coverage coming up. it starts with coverage at 10 a.m. of bay area life pride edition, and the parade starts at 1030. abc seven is the exclusive media partner of the 54th san francisco pride parade. stay with us. we'll be right back. >> grand sierra resort presents the art of balance for her. it's a world of tranquility at our
