abc seven mornings live now at six. >> get ready for a bay area heat wave. some areas will be seeing well above triple digit temperatures. drew is telling us if any of our cities will be breaking heat records today, then increased heat brings

increased fire danger. >> the effort to mop up this fire in the east bay hills overnight, and a snazzy sports car inspired by wine country. >> if you want to drive away in this one, you have to go to napa to get it. >> did you see the wide shot? >> it already looks too rich for my blood. >> okay. yeah. >> welcome to tuesday, july 2nd. >> good to start the check of our forecast with you because we're in a heat wave. yeah. we're jumping right into the depths of summer today. >> an accuweather alert is in effect as we have a heat wave beginning today that will last at least six days through the upcoming weekend. a live look from sutro tower. that sun is up here this morning. temperatures. we have some very warm areas away from the coast like brentwood, vacaville in the 80s and 70s right now 72, in clear lake, 60, in saint helena, around the bay shoreline. this morning we're in the 50s and in the 60s, so we want to get you prepared for the hot weather that really moves in here in a big way. this afternoon we'll look inland first. lots of sunshine. we're already into the 90s before lunchtime and then

into the afternoon. we're well above 105, 106 in a lot of areas. in fact, this is some of the hottest weather we have seen in nearly two years. you have to go back to september of 2022 to find temperatures like this. so we do need to take it easy to heed the warnings out there around the bay shoreline. it's a hot afternoon. lots of sunshine heat advisories are in effect for good reason. we're going to the 80s and 90s for daytime highs. the immediate coastline, the place that gets the reprieve from the heat. we will find temperatures mild, but that's where you go to beat some of these hot temperatures, 60s and 70s for daytime highs. let's check in with frances, see how the commute is going. >> all right drew, we have several hot spots on the freeways as well. there's a new big rig accident in the south bay. this is on 101 near alum rock, a big rig reported. and it's before actually santa clara street. so you can see there's some slow and go traffic approaching the scene. also, let's head over to 680. if uh- heading towards the sunol grade, it's actually on westbound 84 approaching 680. this five car

accident has been blocking lanes and traffic is moving at four miles per hour. approaching the scene, tow trucks are already there. also, an accident slowing that slows things down as you head toward the maze. westbound 580 at 80 a solo car crash. reggie francis, thank you. >> today, many parts of the bay area are likely to see temperatures in the triple digits. and if you're outside too long, that could be dangerous for your health. abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us live from dublin, with some advice on how to stay cool for the next few days. good morning. >> hey, reggie, good morning to you. we are at the wave in dublin right now, and this is just one of many places where folks will be looking to find some relief from that heat. and keep in mind, temperatures here in the east bay are forecasted to be above 110 degrees this week, making it the hottest weather in a couple of years. it's weather that is especially dangerous for anybody working outside like victor davila. we spoke with him while he was out

with his little brother. he does . he works part time detailing cars and does most of that work outside. >> i pretty much do it outside almost every other day, so i'm a little scared. i'm a little scared on that end. but we'll see, we'll see. we'll start sweating and definitely stay hydrated even young, healthy people that are going out for hikes and spending time out of the heat can really be impacted by this. >> if they don't prepare. >> doctors are warning people to be careful. heat exhaustion can come on quickly in weather like this. symptoms include heavy sweating, cold, pale and clammy skin, a fast but weak pulse, nausea or vomiting, cramps or headaches, and dizziness. their advice to avoid this drink plenty of water. find shade or stay indoors. live in dublin lena howland abc seven news. >> thank you lena. new this morning, the biden administration is expected to propose new regulations today to protect millions of workers

exposed to dangerous heat on the job, including farm workers delivering construction workers, landscapers and kitchen cooks. if finalized, the measure would protect an estimated 36 million u.s. workers from injuries related to heat exposure on the job. establishing the first major federal safety standard of its kind, it would require employers to take action once temperatures reached 80 degrees by giving workers access to drinking water, break areas where workers can cool off and rest breaks when needed. >> the high fire danger and dangerous heat have prompted east bay regional parks to close some areas for the rest of the week. more than two dozen parks are off limits, including the trails at tilden park, anthony chabot regional park and round valley regional preserve. they'll be closed until at least friday morning. park officials say swim facilities and shoreline regional parks are remaining open. >> we know the high fire danger is on a lot of your minds if you are living in the east bay hills, especially after last night when a fire burned along grizzly peak boulevard near the

berkeley oakland orinda border. people started seeing these flames around 930, and it's not clear what sparked them. crews say they got an initial call about illegal fireworks going off in the area, and abc seven news crews did see what appears to be a box of fireworks on the side of the road. now fire officials say nobody was hurt, no structures were damaged and crews were able to keep the fire to about two acres, keep the abc seven, bay area apps and abc seven news.com handy throughout the heat wave. to stay up to date on the latest forecast, you have access to the same live doppler seven tools that drew in the weather team are using. we have a list of cooling centers open across the bay area, and we will send alerts to your phone when there are any important updates. >> the oakland city council is tackling two big issues today. they're expected to one vote on a budget, and two decide whether to place a recall of mayor shengtao on the november ballot. they are expected to approve that recall resolution. organizers started this process months ago over crime and economic concerns in oakland.

last month, the city clerk said recall organizers gathered enough signatures and two days after the clerk's announcement, the fbi raided tao's home as part of a broader investigation. the mayor says she has done nothing wrong. the oakland city council, as i mentioned, will also vote on its budget. they'll have to decide between two versions one which factors in the sale of the coliseum and one which does not. supporters of the plan that includes the stadium sale say they are confident in the deal and are open to including contingencies if the sale doesn't go through, but others on the city council are calling the plan fiscally irresponsible. >> we are following a story on an annual unsanctioned event in san francisco. the dolores hill bomb is when skateboarders ride down dolores street, which is one of the steepest hills in the city. it's set to happen again this saturday. last night, police held a community meeting. they hope this year does not get out of hand after last year's event ended with nearly 100 arrests, many of them teenagers. some people who live in the area

are calling for police to put an end to this event. >> who shows up to an event that's supposed to be fun and peaceful with what the police found when they confiscated things from people, they arrested knives, guns, you know, spray, pepper spray, pepper. >> some skaters say they want the event to continue and that there are only a few people who actually cause trouble. the city is still dealing with last year's bomb. it is facing pending litigation over the arrests. >> san jose police have made six more arrests in connection with a violent sideshow that injured an officer. one driver is charged with hitting a spectator at the sideshow. this was on june 15th. according to police. an officer tried to help the injured person, but other spectators swarmed his patrol car and that's when the officer got hurt. >> if you attack a san jose police officer attempting to help an injured person so you can become famous on tiktok, it's possible you may escape consequences for hours or days, but be assured we will find you.

we will arrest you. >> police believe they have arrested everyone who damaged the car and attacked the officer. >> take a look at the accuweather headlines. we have the accuweather alert in place not only for the heat, but also for the fire danger. a red flag warning remains in effect. it got expanded overnight to include the santa cruz mountains. it includes the east bay hills and the north bay mountains for low humidity levels at night and northerly winds gusting to 35mph. it's all about hot temperatures this afternoon. look at highs versus average. we are well above where we typically land this time of the year by more than 20 degrees in spots napa, livermore, concord, santa rosa above 100 degrees. later this afternoon. so excessive heat warnings are in effect heat advisories as well. these have been extended through sunday evening. so through the holiday weekend for these very warm temperatures, the coast very popular over the next couple of days. so looking

at the beach forecast today a little bit of morning cloud cover giving way to warm sunshine, 70s and 80s along the coast. no advisories in effect here. the ocean water temperatures at 56 degrees. just watch these temperatures really take off over the next couple of hours. by lunchtime, we're already hitting about 100 degrees in our hottest areas inland, and then it gets even hotter than that deeper into the day. so please take it easy out there. this heat wave is likely going to last at least six days. stay hydrated. find ways to stay cool. remember, never leave people or pets inside cars. cars heat up very quickly under these temperatures and just check on your neighbors because this heat does affect everyone when it's this hot this time of the year, the seven day forecast will show you that weekend preview coming up in a few minutes. >> reggie drew thank you. still to come, disturbing new details in the jeffrey epstein case. how long prosecutors may have known about his crimes before cutting him a plea deal. and many across the bay area are having trouble getting their paychecks or even getting into their accounts. how long customers could be without access to their credit union.

it's 613 grand jury records in the jeffrey epstein case have now been unsealed. and the documents show florida prosecutors knew that he sexually assaulted teenage girls two years before they cut a plea deal. the transcripts reveal two dozen teens testified in 2006. they detailed how epstein paid

them for massages at his palm beach mansion and repeatedly sexually abused them. two years later, epstein cut a deal and pleaded guilty to some state charges. he served 13 months on work release and is required to register as a sex offender. we can all imagine what a nightmare would be to not have access to money in our bank accounts. that's exactly what happened to many members of patelco bank right now, and it isn't over yet. the dublin based bank was hit by a ransomware attack over the weekend, and services are still down. seven on your side has been digging into this issue , and as abc seven news reporter j.r stone explains, getting service back up and running is not a quick process. >> patelco credit union bank members walking out and left wondering when they'll be able to access all of their funds. the bank was the victim of a ransomware attack, according to a representative. >> i'm scared. i'm afraid it's going to go belly up. >> i haven't had access to any of my accounts within batelco, a bank spokesperson says they are

working with a third party cybersecurity forensic firm, saying, please know that our team and third party partners are working around the clock to get back up and running monday. >> this patelco credit union location in san francisco was only allowing folks to take out $500, you know, as rent day. >> today we have to pay a rent, right? and this is only for $500. where the hell do you get a place for $500 in the city? yeah. you know, it's not enough. >> patelco says they experienced the ransomware attack on saturday, two days later, and some of the day to day systems are still shut down. >> in the end, the insurance companies will pick up the tab. and the dumbest criminal today is the one that walks into a bank with a gun to rob the bank. you're not going to get anything . the smart ones are the ones that are doing this because they know there'll be an insurance payout. >> that's tony colson. he's the

cybersecurity center director at cal state san bernardino. >> ransomware, you know, is meant to also panic the public to a certain degree. oh my goodness, i can't get a hold of something. and then the pressure mounts and next thing you know, someone is forced into paying the ransom. >> colson is not surprised that customers have been waiting to bank for at least two days. he says, before a bank like patelco goes back online, they want to make sure everything is as it was and will stay that way going forward. as if we'll continue to see this type of attack on banks in this country. >> we have about a 500,000 person deficit in cybersecurity, and until we can fill those jobs , we're going to be putting up with these types of attacks frequently. >> j.r stone, abc seven news new at six a national retailer left san francisco's union square and is opening a new location. >> the container store is now in

the south of market neighborhood. the home goods store moved from its fourth street location to the 5-5-5 ninth street retail center. this is where bed, bath and beyond used to be before it closed last year. the chronicle is reporting that texas based company has seen its shares drop roughly 77% this year. it's not clear how much the company spent on the new store in soma, a one of a kind electric maserati is going to be auctioned off at a gala in napa. >> maserati says this is the first 100% electric luxury convertible. it's inspired by a red wine from an italian winemaker who owns antinori winery in napa valley. it's a rich burgundy color and features leather like biomaterial from the vineyards. the car will be auctioned off july 14th at the arts for all gala. lionel richie is set to headline the event, and it raises money for public school arts programs. >> first of all, it's really rare to find like an electric convertible. >> so that's the first thing. >> well they say this is the first luxury electric

even a cold shower before bed can do wonders. and then really, the peak heating times 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. is when we'll find the hot temperatures. so seek out, you know, the coastline if you can. that is where we'll find some of the cooler weather today. so highs in the south bay 90s if not above 100 degrees 102. in morgan hill, 98 in san jose, 96 in cupertino, 103 in los gatos, along the peninsula. we'll go to 97 redwood city, 90 in menlo park, 88. in san mateo, the coastline. we'll see temperatures in the 70s for daytime highs across the city. today we'll go into the 70s and 80s. it is warm across san francisco with full sunshine in the north bay. it's dangerously hot. this is where the excessive heat warnings will be in effect for good reason. widespread triple digits 100in petaluma, 104. in sonoma. the same in lakeport, 109 in ukiah. napa. up to 102 in the east bay. today it is going to be hot. 91 in oakland, 95 in fremont, up to 97 castro valley and inland. these temperatures, some of the

hottest weather we have seen in about two years 108 in walnut creek, 109 in concord, 110 in brentwood hitting 108 in livermore overnight tonight, you can bet we're going to hang on to some of this mild air. so 60s and 70s very likely, and our warmest areas away from the coast. and future tracker showing you our heat warnings continue through wednesday because temperatures do not change all that much even to the fourth on thursday. it is quite hot and this hot weather lasts through the upcoming weekend. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. our heat wave starts today, will likely last six days through sunday for 4th of july. fireworks in the evening on thursday, believe it or not, we'll have clear skies, but it will be quite warm. guys >> thank you drew. >> now we're checking in with ginger zee who is in phoenix with a look at what's coming up on gma. >> good morning ginger. >> reggie kumasi great to be with you. it is not a dry heat here as we here in arizona. also prepping for that big heat wave and the long duration heat wave i'll be talking about that. but let's start with barrel because

we also are just breaking records left and right. the strongest july hurricane record on record. the earliest cat five on record. and this beast is headed toward jamaica. the cayman islands is on hurricane watch. we will also see it likely decrease in intensity. but get toward that yucatan peninsula. and now some of the models are trying to move that high. that was keeping us safe to the east, and that would allow for some coastal texas play. so we will get all over that as we go into the holiday weekend, but also got to talk about that overseas flight. that was just the severe turbulence that injured at least 30 people and had one man stuck in the plane ceiling. i had to read that so many times to understand yesterday, but we will get into the details. also. i'm live here in phoenix, the hottest american city and one of the fastest warming. talking about their development, but also this pioneering of this technique that the ems and the fire department here have done to save lives because they get so many calls, they're doing a nearly 60% more heat emergency calls than they did just two

county. the care court program will connect people in need with resources for treatment and housing care. stands for

community assistance, recovery and empowerment. it's part of the governor's push to overhaul california's mental health system. san francisco started its care court last year all counties have to have it in place by december. if you were in the north bay, all rise on petaluma transit are now free. and that's a bus service that goes around petaluma. it's part of a one year pilot program that kicked off yesterday. the program is being paid for by both city and sonoma county funding. the goal is to increase ridership and increase access to residents. if the program is successful, it could be extended. if you live in santa clara, you may see some increased traffic around levi's stadium. tonight, it is hosting a soccer match tonight between brazil and colombia as a part of copa america. now, these are two of the best teams in the world, and they have very devoted fans. so the stadium is about to be loud. colombia has not lost since february of 2022. the game starts around six tonight. klay thompson is leaving the golden

saw it wasn't ready. >> good morning. it's tuesday, july 2nd. >> everyone, let's get to that hot forecast. these numbers are unbelievable. >> yeah, and it starts today. meaning this heat wave will likely last several days into the weekend. live. look from our sutro tower this morning. it is sunny out there and we will find excessive heat warnings and heat advisories. in effect an excessive heat warning is the highest threat when it comes to hot temperatures, and that encompasses a massive portion of the region, and this has been extended until sunday evening. so we're with this heat for the next several days. temperatures right now 50s and 60s around the bay shoreline. some are warmer areas already into the 70s right now in the north bay it is mild to start the morning. so taking a look at our temperatures inland where we have that excessive heat warning in effect, it's for good reason. well into the 90s before lunchtime and then later today exceeding 105 106 in many areas. in fact, these air temperatures,

some of the hottest we've seen in nearly two years, you have to go back to september of 2022 to find heat this high around the bay shoreline heat advisories in effect, it's going to be hot sunshine temperatures in the 90s. and then along the coast. the immediate coastline is immune from the intense heat. this is where a lot of folks are going to be. our next couple of days, upper 60s to the lower 70s with full sunshine. today let's check in with frances. see, the drive times are going all right. >> we're tracking this five car crash as you make your way towards sunol. it's on westbound 84 vallecitos road near little valley. tow truck seemed to be stuck in the backup where it is crawling at around five miles per hour. so it's been out there for a bit. and also better news heading to the oakland maze and earlier accident has been cleared. 580 at 80. we have live camera shot for you. you can see the westbound 80 stretch on the right hand side moving towards the bay bridge. so things are now flowing pretty well as you make your way to the bay bridge toll plaza, though traffic is backed up to the 880 overcrossing slow to the metering lights, which were

turned on at around 541 this morning. drive times looking good. westbound 580 castro valley to the maze. also delay free northbound 101. an earlier crash cleared in san jose and north to 80. looking good on the peninsula into san francisco. >> reggie thanks frances this morning. much of the bay area anticipating that heat wave, and we could see the hottest temperatures of the season. there are some easy ways to cool off and stay safe for the next few days. let's bring in abc seven news reporter lena howland, who joins us live from dublin. so, lena, give us some ideas. >> hey, reggie, good morning to you. we are at the wave in dublin and this is expected to be one of the busier places in the east bay today, as folks are looking for a little bit of relief from this heat. they don't open until 11. but of course the city does still have a splash pad open up here just a stone's throw away in emerald glen park. now keep in mind temperatures are expected to be above 110 degrees in parts of the east bay, so doctors are urging people to be careful during this heat wave. heat

exhaustion can come on quickly in weather like this. symptoms include heavy sweating, cold, pale and clammy skin, a fast but weak pulse, nausea or vomiting, cramps or headaches, and dizziness. it can be treated by getting to a cool place, a loose end, clothing take a cool bath, sip water and if your symptoms last longer than one hour, be sure to get medical help when it comes to heat stroke, the warning signs get much more serious. >> people will actually get very confused. they might start vomiting and they might paradoxically go from looking sort of red and flush to looking cool and clammy and even pale and that's when, as a physician, i'm really concerned that they are entering a very dangerous stage of heat stroke. >> doctors recommend drinking plenty of water, find shade or stay inside. they say you can even prepare your home by closing all windows and doors and shutting blinds. you can do that right now, and this will

help keep the heat out and keep the cool air in. live in dublin lena howland abc seven news. >> thank you lena. firefighters are on alert this week with the combination of the hot weather we're seeing and of course, the 4th of july holiday, in addition to the usual tools, the alameda county fire department is boosting its staffing and rolling out new plans, including a newly formed hand crew and volunteers on call. >> well, one of the uh- best assets and a fighting chance. we have is a bulldozer able to eliminate fuels and put a perimeter in. alameda county fire department has three dozers staffing two of them, and will be up staffing for this red flag warning event. and through the 4th of july, safe and sane fireworks are allowed in newark, union city and dublin. >> it's up to the individual to use them responsibly where they're permitted. parents will be held liable for any damage children cause. p-g-and-e's warned about the possibility of limited power shutoffs due to fire risk earlier this week and overnight. >> they started. so here is the

outage map where you see purple triangles. that's the areas where the power is turned off. you can see they are in small areas of napa, sonoma and solano counties. pg and e does this to reduce the risk of their equipment starting a fire. the heat could also stress transformers pg and e is installing portable transformers in areas with the most intense heat, and replacing dozens more that can handle higher loads. >> when we have this 24 hour extreme heat, our equipment, specifically our transformers, don't have an opportunity to cool down and that can create stress in our equipment, which can lead to heat related power outages. >> cal iso, which monitors the state's power grid, says power supplies are adequate for now, but it's keeping an eye on that grid for potential impacts from a timeline of temperatures to power outage warnings, we have put all of this week's weather stories in one place. >> abc seven news.com/weather. bookmark it now so you can find it easily. all of the updated

stories are going to be posted there. if you're using our app, there is a weather section you can find that easily as well. it's one of the first things you'll see when you open the abc7 bay area app. it's available wherever you stream. >> developing news now on hurricane beryl. the storm has killed at least one person, so far in the caribbean. beryl has become the latest category five hurricane on record. the earliest, i should say category five hurricane on record in the atlantic basin. winds have reached up to 165mph. scientists say it's feeding off ocean waters that are already as warm as the peak of hurricane season in september. by the end of the weekend, forecasters say it could reach the coast of texas this morning. >> prosecutors are trying to determine what comes next in the case against former in the case against former president donald trump. yesterday, the supreme court ruled trump and all presidents have broad immunity from prosecution. the ruling states trump has some presidential immunity from actions taken to overturn results of the 2020 election. biden president biden condemned this decision, vowing not to

heat warnings in effect for the south bay. 102 in morgan hill will go to 97 in santa clara, 98 in san jose, cupertino up to 96 degrees. the coast is mild in the 70s, but you hop over to redwood city. it's a lot hotter at 9791. in mountain view, we'll hit 88 in san mateo across the city today. it is going to be quite warm, about 20 degrees above average in some areas, 70s and 80s for daytime highs across san francisco. now very hot in the north bay. excessive heat warnings will be in effect here for good reason. 106 in santa rosa, 102 in napa, 101 in nevada, the same in vallejo, san rafael, up to 100 degrees in the east bay. it is hot today, 91 in oakland, 90 in berkeley will go to 95 union city, 97 castro valley, and then inland. it's just dangerously hot. and this is the first of several days of temperatures like this. in fact, you'll have to go back almost two years to find high temperatures this hot back to september of 2022, when we were at 108, in walnut creek, 109 in concord, 110 the high in
