there. we are also watching a dangerous combo unfold today with several new fire sparking under strong winds and dry conditions. there are evacuations in place in napa county for the toll fire, burning 50 acres so far near calistoga. we'll have a live report with the latest from firefighters in just a moment. >> but first, we do have team coverage tracking the fires and the temperatures as this heat wave sets in for the long haul right away. let's get to abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian with more on the conditions. spence. >> okay, dion, we have we have oppressively hot conditions right now. here's a look at our current temperature readings. you can see the triple digits all over the area, but not just triple digits. i mean way into the triple digits. that 102 right now in danville. that's pretty hot. but 107 at concord, 108 at vacaville, saint helena, 109 degrees. cloverdale 103 110 at ukiah. so you can see it is very, very hot, dangerously hot. as we've been saying the last couple of days. so here's our uh- excessive heat warning, which covers virtually the

entire bay area. it has now been extended until next tuesday. so we're going to be under this warning for the next several days. and right around the bay shoreline and down to the santa cruz mountains. it's a heat advisory. during this time, of course, with this kind of oppressive heat, there is an increased risk of heat related illness. now we also have a red flag warning in effect for high fire danger that has been extended until 5 a.m. friday. and that's in effect for the santa cruz mountains, the east bay hills and the mountains of the north bay. winds are generally out of the north northeast, and they're gusting to about 30mph with dangerously low humidity. as low as about 10. as for that toll, fire up in napa county right now near the fire, it's 105 degrees. relative humidity under 20, winds gusting to only about 11mph. and we are not getting a break from the heat for several days. tomorrow we'll see highs in that 100 to 112 degree range in the hottest spots. once again, similar range of highs on thursday friday. not much change either, only until early next week do we expect any significant change. i'll have

that forecast a little bit later dion. >> all right. waiting for that relief spencer. thank you. now to the north bay. and that fire triggering evacuations. right now firefighters are getting a lot of help from the air. but there is still no containment on the toll fire. again 50 acres have burned so far. it's all burning northwest of calistoga off old lolli toll road. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is live for us in calistoga, talking to firefighters and evacuees. he has more on the situation. cornell >> hey, dion. it's been a very long, hot, scary day for homeowners here in the napa valley. about 100 folks still out of their homes. they were evacuated this morning here off silverado trail. now take a look . you can see the smoke rising still from the toll fire on the ridge. more than 300 firefighters on the front lines right now, working in what could only be described as brutal conditions. it's about 107 degrees right now with strong

red flag winds. cal fire crews doing battle in wine country where the toll fire started tuesday morning in rugged jericho canyon outside the town of calistoga. >> our crews have been doing a phenomenal job, not just ground resources, but also air resources as well. >> firefighting aircraft and choppers dropping retardant and water almost nonstop for several hours. but the weather the biggest challenge here extreme heat and red flag fire conditions. making it tough makes it challenging. >> as you can see back here, we're in a very steep slope, very steep area. so adding that, contributing that to the mild, mild to moderate wind conditions that we have and dry dryness of the vegetation, it makes it challenging for our crews to be able to gain access and be able to suppress the fire. >> as we could see flames on the

hill. uh- approximately, i don't know, maybe half a mile away. >> george and joanie hahn are among 150 homeowners evacuated on old lolli toll road. george grabbed this video of a cal fire plane fighting the fire near his house, grab some artwork and took some kids photos and put them in the car. we show george and joanie their home through the lens of our news camera, and luckily their home still standing. >> this morning i was up very early. the wind was howling and if it would have been wind like it was, this morning, our house price wouldn't be there right now. >> this fire burning near the same area as the glass fire back in 2020, a triggering scene from many locals who lost their homes. >> that was really, really scary. i mean, it was like choking smoke couldn't see in front of you, you know, it was like end of days. >> water dropping helicopters are still on duty, basically nonstop dropping water retardant

on this fire, which apparently is still zero containment right now. red cross has sent up an evacuation point for all evacuees at the calistoga community center. cal fire says the cause of this fire still under investigation. we're live in calistoga. cornell, bernard, abc seven news. >> we will stay on top of the situation. glad that you were able to get that hahn family some peace of mind. all right. moving on now to solano county, where a grass fire dubbed the denverton fire is burning in an area where the group california forever is planning to build a new city. the fire burning about two miles south of travis air force base, has grown to 60 acres and has triggered the closure of westbound lanes of highway 12 at scali lane, no buildings are threatened. that is the positive news this time lapse video shows all of the smoke and there are reports that it can be seen from neighborhoods in sassoon city. it all appears crews are now getting control of the flames. >> fire crews knocked out a

brush fire that was burning on san bruno mountain near brisbane. the fire was first reported around 11 this morning. it took crews about an hour to contain the flames and keep the fire to about three acres in size. well, when high winds and dry conditions increase, our wildfire risk, p-g-and-e's issues a public safety power shut off. you may also hear us call that a psps. right now the power is off in parts of the bay area in pockets of napa, sonoma and solano counties, all due to this psps on this live p-g-and-e's map. the purple triangles. you see them there are the locations under a psps. p-g-and-e's says 200 customers in the bay area are under that psps. most of them, as you see on the map in solano county, the estimated restoration time is currently 10 p.m. p-g-and-e's says more planned outages are expected tomorrow in the same ten counties in northern california from napa county up to tehama county, and here is proof of just how dangerous fireworks can be in these

conditions. >> the san francisco fire department posted this video here saying these fireworks sparked a three acre fire in mclaren park last sunday. as july 4th approaches, the department wants to remind folks that all fireworks that includes the safe and sane kind are illegal in the city. over in the east bay, fire investigators are looking into whether fireworks ignited this fire along grizzly peak boulevard near the berkeley oakland orinda border. crews say they received a call of illegal fireworks going off in the area last night, shortly before the fire started. no one was hurt and no buildings were damaged. crews were able to keep the fire to just about two acres illegal fireworks fears have first responders on alert and even shutting down some east bay parks. >> abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley is live in the east bay, with the details on the precautions firefighters are taking and also some tips to stay cool. leslie >> well, today a lot of summer camps moved indoors. playgrounds

and ball fields are completely abandoned, although i did just see a moment ago a guy ride by with a baby in tow behind his bike. the open space areas are starting to close down. many parks remain open. my car temperature gauge a minute ago said 116. the air temperature where we are is about 107, so it's definitely getting into dangerous territory out here because of the high heat. >> there's definitely more opportunity for people to find themselves in a dangerous situation, overheating, not staying hydrated, as well as the potential for wildland fire. >> while the contra costa fire protection district is up, staffing for the next five days, they are also advising people to avoid hiking trails, as many local and regional parks are closing down mount diablo state park is shut down today and may remain closed into the weekend. lime ridge open space in concord is closed, as are many walnut creek open spaces and parks.

east bay regional parks are shutting down a long list of places now through the end of the weekend, to coincide with the sustained heat wave. all park districts are asking people to check websites for details before heading out. >> many east bay regional parks will remain open for visitors during this week's increased temperatures, including swim facilities and shoreline regional parks. unfortunately, we had to close some, hill and inland parks, due to the extreme fire conditions and heat cooling centers like the senior center in concord are a welcome respite for many who gladly spent hours in the air conditioning and out of the inferno outside. >> so you live in your car? yes. it means a lot to come inside and cool off. yes >> see the senior center? no. open where is. what are you going? me? >> i'm just staying in, keeping my shutters closed. >> kids cooled off at meadow home spray park in concord for

afternoon relief from the heat. parks like these will be popular in the coming days, with so many other recreational plans now off limits. rescued wildlife was hand-carried into the lindsay wildlife rehabilitation hospital in walnut creek. >> i'm a vet tech so i kept it alive with sugar water and a sponge. >> thank you. the hospital said to expect to see unusual behavior, including birds like barn owls falling from nests like the swifts and the swallows. >> the babies will actually start jumping out due to the heat. and in cases like that, you need to contact your nearest wildlife rehabilitation center >> the city of walnut creek said that con fire strongly recommended that open spaces be closed, so people don't underestimate the heat getting stuck out on trails and requiring rescue. that way, fire resources are reserved for real fires. so the word is do not go out on closed trails over the next few days. reporting live in

walnut creek. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. >> really important advice. thank you. leslie. the heat has bart making some changes today. trains are running slower right now. bart says when temperatures top 100 degrees, the heat can be so intense it bends the track, causing trains to derail. slow slowing down gives the bart operators more time to prevent that from happening. >> now the heat is also making for bad air. in the bay area. there is a spare the air alert in effect today and tomorrow for high levels of ozone in the air. air quality managers are asking people to help out our air quality by driving less. >> communities across the bay area are opening up those cooling centers to help people get out of the heat. in the south bay, vta is offering free rides to people heading to cooling centers in santa clara county. we have a list of cooling centers across the bay area at abc seven news.com and our abc seven bay area app. you have access to the same live doppler seven tools our weather team uses, and will send alerts

east chief and da are set to give an update. just 15 minutes from now on. a deadly crash in the city's west portal neighborhood. you may remember that crash killed a family of four waiting at a bus stop back in march, an sfmta report said. the driver was on the wrong side of the road and speeding before plowing into the bus stop, but the driver had not been charged. i'll let you know as soon as we learn the update from the chief. >> we are learning more about a terrible crime at a bart station in san francisco. investigators say someone pushed a woman into an oncoming train monday night. that woman has died from her injuries. abc seven news reporter luz pena spoke to bart police chief. she also spoke to the woman's family. lose. how is the family coming to grips with this? >> julian. truly heartbreaking. and i just spoke to the woman's nephew on the phone. he said she worked as a telephone operator at the marriott in union square.

she took bart every night after work last night around 11:06 p.m, she was pushed by a suspect and hit her head on the train and fell on the platform. it was the route she took for the last 40 years. monday night was her last 74 year old. corazon dandan has been identified as a woman who was pushed into an oncoming bart train monday night. it's a tragedy, and uh- goes to uh- public safety. >> how safe are we at bart or anywhere in the bay area? if people can just randomly cause another person to die? >> according to her nephew, corazon had just finished her night shift as a telephone operator at the marriott in union square. she was taking the train to head home to daly city. >> we determined that the suspect had approached the victim as a train was arriving at the station, and pushed the victim towards the train, causing the victim to collide with the train. >> bart police chief kevin franklin said his officers

arrived on scene and arrested the suspect. within eight minutes of the incident, we were able to transport the victim to san francisco general hospital, but unfortunately they passed away at the hospital. >> the or the suspect was later arrested and booked into jail. >> the suspect has been identified as 49 year old trevor belmont, a transient in the area. now, several frequent bart riders are urging the city to do more to increase safety. >> i have been verbally accosted. i have witnessed other people being accosted as well. and i know that the bart police are here. we do see them doing what they should be doing, but it's not enough. i'm always carrying a weapon on me. >> outside the powell station in urban alchemy, workers said they're constantly moving. homeless individuals from the area. >> we are de-escalation. you know. we know how to solve the problem. >> a bart employee who wants to remain anonymous said there's a drastic shift at night inside

the powell station. >> it's just a whole different animal at night. you know, there's a lot of stuff going on. there's fights, there's jumpings, there's people being shot. city is not safe anymore. >> chief franklin said this incident doesn't represent bart. >> we've worked very hard to make bart the safest way to travel around the bay area, and this incident is not representative of a typical day at bart. but we always tell people to be aware of their surroundings. >> bart police said there were multiple witnesses who stayed back to help. now, the san francisco district attorney is reviewing the case. no charges have been filed at this time. in the newsroom. luz pena, abc seven news. >> what a tragic story, lewis. many thanks and moving on. this is a story we are closely following. oakland's effort to close a massive budget deficit. the city council voted just a little over half an hour ago on its proposal, and it passed. the version the council passed includes funding from the sale of the coliseum property with

contingencies. if the sale doesn't go through quickly enough, the city is facing a shortfall projected to be at about $200 million or more over the next two years. the city is facing some difficult decisions now, which could mean cuts to vital city services such as police and fire. abc seven news reporter anser hassan is following the story at city hall, and we'll have an update for us at 5 p.m. also today, the city council is expected to take up a resolution on the recall of mayor shengtao. if approved, it would place the recall on the november general election ballot . oakland voters would be voting on two recalls. if this happens, the recall of alameda county district attorney pam price was already approved for voters throughout the county. >> well, you're focused on the future of ai here at abc seven news. and today, a plan to rein in its most frightening applications passed a critical test. san francisco state senator scott wiener's bill to regulate major ai systems passed an assembly committee today. the

bill would require safety assessment for ai models that cost more than $100 million. the goal is to prevent powerful ai systems from being used to hurt humanity in really catastrophic ways. tech companies are arguing the bill would have a chilling effect on a fast growing industry. wiener says startups would not be impacted. the assembly appropriations committee takes up the plan next all right. >> when it comes to the weather, where do we even begin today? yeah, the triple digit heat, the red flag warning. >> there is so much happening. yeah spencer tracking all of it for us and keeping you busy, that's for sure. >> diana and julian, there's a lot going on. here's a live doppler seven. in the satellite image, you can see the north northeasterly winds as they flow over the hills and the air moves downslope. it dries out. it warms up. that, of course, contributes to the high fire danger that we have right now. now, the winds are generally very strong, but it is breezy out there. so the sustained wind speeds right now are generally between ten and about 20mph, with occasional gusts, especially up in the north bay.

and we're looking at the 24 hour temperature change. it was a hot day yesterday. today is significantly hotter, 15 degrees warmer in san francisco than at this time yesterday. 12 degrees warmer in oakland. hayward 17 degrees warmer. so it's hot. let's take a look at current temperature. reading 77 in san francisco right now oakland 8797 in hayward 101 in san jose 97. redwood city 86 at half moon bay, looking toward the golden gate from emeryville. other temperature readings right now. 95 in petaluma, 98 in napa, 104 in santa rosa, 108 vacaville. concord 107 105 at livermore. that is oppressive heat and these are our forecast headlines. this dangerous heat wave will continue through the weekend. a high fire danger is with us right now because of gusty wind and low humidity. and of course, the heat. and this heat will ease early next week. but we have many days of this oppressive heat coming our way. before the heat eases. let's take a closer look at the excessive heat warning, which covers virtually all of the bay area that has been extended now until 11 p.m. next tuesday. of

course, increased risk of heat related illness under these conditions and the areas in orange around the bay shoreline and down near santa cruz reflect where we have a heat advisory in effect now. the red flag warning has been extended. also until 5 a.m. friday. that covers the santa cruz mountains, the east bay hills, the north bay mountains gusts up to about 30mph from time to time, with humidity dropping as low as 10, which is again dangerously low. so on we go and you know, this clicker sometimes does not work. maybe it's the heat. so while you watch this i'll go over to my manual control of the graphics and see if it'll move along. so and again it's not. so i'm going to do this and then go back to this. these things happen and hopefully this will work. trying to move it along again okay here we go. looks like it wants to move okay. so the heat wave for this week. some safety tips. drink plenty of fluids. wear lightweight

clothing. take breaks in the shade or air conditioning if possible, and know the signs of heat related illness. and of course, never leave people or pets inside cars for the fire season. fire prevention tips avoid activities with open flames. properly discard burning objects like cigarettes for example. keep motor vehicles off dry grass and if a fire starts, call 911. let's talk about overnight conditions. it's going to be warm overnight. low temperatures mainly in the mid to upper 60s near the bay to mid and upper 70s as some inland areas. that's really warm for an overnight low and for tomorrow's highs. once again, numerous triple digits in our inland areas. the warmest areas will be between about 105 and 112 degrees. and we'll see upper 90s in the hottest bay shore locations. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. while you look at that, i'll scroll back over into camera view sizzling conditions for a 4th of july. on thursday, we'll see high temperatures up to about 106, in the hottest inland areas. that will be the pattern going into friday as well. even

dublin based credit union says the attack, impacting day to day operations including things like online banking branches, are open but services are currently limited. customers could only withdraw a maximum of $500. the cybersecurity center director at cal state san bernardino says attacks like this are becoming more common. >> the dumbest criminal today is the one that walks into a bank with a gun to rob the bank. you're not going to get anything. the smart ones are the ones that are doing this because they know there'll be an insurance payout. >> the credit union is now working with what it calls a leading third party cybersecurity forensic firm to get its systems back up and running. >> just ahead, following the money in the case with major consequences for oakland, the big names in california politics

toll fire northeast of calistoga. this one started this morning. firefighters just told us better mapping puts the fire at about 40 acres containment. though currently at 10. the weather is certainly a factor with the 100 degree heat in the north bay. you can see the current temperatures scrolling at the bottom of your screen. 93 right now in pittsburgh, 103 in redwood city.

>> well, we are following the story rocking oakland, that fbi search of mayor sheng tao's home. >> the abc seven news i-team is uncovering more about the well-connected political family that appears to be part of the corruption probe. we're learning big names in california politics, received campaign contributions from the huang family. >> i-team reporter stephanie sierra gives us this in-depth look at the investigation. >> as the saying goes, in the world of politics, it's all about who you know. but pictures and handshakes aside, if you want the truth, follow the money. a lot has happened in the city of oakland in recent weeks. the mayor's house got raided, and then we learned about a waste company. now in the spotlight for alleged money laundering. sources confirmed to abc news the fbi is working with the irs and the u.s. postal service as a part of this investigation. given the raids happened around the same time, it appears it's all connected, but the fbi hasn't specifically confirmed or said why. here's

what we do know. the family owns california waste solutions or ors, a large commercial and residential recycling company servicing oakland and san jose. it's operated by david duong. according to allegations by the fair political practices commission, his son, andy was the true source of at least 93 contributions to multiple local campaign committees when he created a campaign contribution laundering scheme to benefit his family owned company. documents allege the committees targeted were candidates running for city council, including milpitas city councilman anthony phan, former oakland city council members desley brooks, abel guillen and xiang tao hiding the source of the contribution. >> that's a big deal. >> we spoke to justin levitt, a law professor at lmu loyola law school. >> it seems like the fppc is zeroing in on a potential scheme to reimburse contributions so that it looks like they're

coming from multiple individuals when they're in fact all coming from one person over the acceptable limits. and if true, that's not okay. the fppc says andy's job is, quote, promoting the company's public image of ors. >> and we found he does a lot of that on social media, posting pictures with politicians at every level of government from the president, vice president, past presidents to what appears to be a familiar relationship with attorney general rob bonta. we found a total of 19 photos of the two on duong's instagram account. according to the fppc allegations, duong sent his father an email titled 2016 political analysis while the grammar was incorrect, here's what part of the email said. here are my final analysis for 2016 double elections year in whom we shall support, going on to say they are all among in groups that will be best beneficial for us in the long

run. duong's recommendations called out an alleged request from rob bonta to sponsor his biggest quote, fundraising, saying he is one of the best allied to ever support and will deliver whatever we ask for when help needs in the future. >> a private expectation that a public official may do well for that family, or for a company, or for a business in the future, doesn't necessarily translate into the public official actually taking action to further that hope. >> abc7's data analysis of local, state, and federal campaign finance data found the average contribution the duong family and entities made to oakland state and federal politicians was around $5,000 per candidate, but ag rob bonta received nearly 30 times more than that. over $155,000. that figure combined with contributions to his wife, state assemblywoman mia bonta, brings that total to more than $172,000. the one politician who

received the most from the wong's is former president donald trump, with contributions totaling more than $300,000. following our story, a representative from bonta's campaign told the i-team they've chosen to donate all $155,000 received from the wong's to worthy california charities and advocacy organizations. out of an abundance of caution, five charities will receive approximately $31,000, including youth alive, planned parenthood, affiliates of california, giffords, moms demand action, and the brady campaign against gun violence. assembly member mia bonta's, campaign spokesperson reported the same, saying, we are methodically identifying any contributions that may have been issues based on recent media reports. corresponding amounts will be donated to charities that include the family violence law center, the native american health center, and reproductive freedom for all other politicians did, too, including congressman adam schiff. his

campaign told the i-team they'll be donating the $26,000 contribution from the wongs to local nonprofits, helping address housing and homelessness. congresswoman barbara lee received more than $61,000, and congressman eric swalwell received more than $29,000, but neither office responded to our requests for comment. >> it's not at all uncommon for the officials or for the candidates to disavow the source of those funds, and then to either return the contributions or to give them over to charity. >> documents obtained by the i-team also show the fppc sent notices to the duong family for failing to file major donor campaign statements, which are contributions over $10,000, and failed to file forms required by law that reveal any conflict of interest. specifically trips, gifts, stocks, money and ties with business entities. >> if the allegations prove correct, that would be concerning, if only because they

this extreme weather. >> a brand new playground in san jose is coming with a warning during this week's heat wave. a parks department spokesperson tells us the metal slides at emma prusch farm park are getting too hot after families complained, the city added pop up canopies to help keep the slides in the shade. >> this slide is, has a little bit of shade on it, the other slide, she couldn't do it. it was too hot. they could use more. i think the little triangles don't really work. more of these kind of tents will be great. >> a spokesperson for the san jose parks department, department of parks and recreation and neighborhood services told us. staff members come out every day to check on whether the playground equipment is too hot. we have seen those stories where, you know, people put those temperature monitors on and i mean, you could really fry an egg. well back in the day, we just fried our bottoms sliding down the slide. >> right. we just did it anyway, right? >> no, i'm spencer, you've been tracking it. no relief for a while. >> for several days. everything's too hot right now.

here's a quick look at our current temperature readings. you can see numerous locations, not only inland, but even near the bay at or well above 100 degrees. let's move along and take a look at a couple of our advisories here. first, the heat alerts, the excessive heat warning in effect. now extended until next tuesday. next tuesday night. as a matter of fact, that's for virtually all of the bay area and those areas in the orange, said a heat advisory. and of course, under these, under this kind of oppressive heat, the risk of heat related illness increases. now, the red flag warning for high fire danger extended until 5 a.m. friday. that's for the santa cruz mountains, east bay hills, the north bay mountains. humidity during this period of time, dropping as low as 10% in some spots. and as you can see, wednesday, thursday, friday, pretty much the same range of high temperatures, very little change. so the oppressive heat will remain with us overnight. low temperatures, upper 60s to low 70s. it's going to be uncomfortably warm overnight and highs tomorrow again in the range similar to what we had today. so here's the accuweather

seven day forecast. 4th of july. sizzling heat is still with us and nothing changes. very much in in the temperature range until well actually monday. so from now through sunday will we see seeing high temperatures inland at 106, 108 degrees. maybe not 110 or 112, 9092 around the bay shoreline. but next monday and tuesday we'll see the heat easing just a bit. i wouldn't call it cooler weather, but more comfortable heat early next week. jillian. >> okay, at least that relief is on the horizon. thank you. spencer. well, california has a new city and it's just outside of the bay area. mountain house has been an unincorporated community for years. it's just beyond the altamont pass off interstate 580 near tracy. and yesterday it officially became the state's 483rd city, with the swearing in of its own city council voters overwhelmingly elected to incorporate mountain house in march. it's the first new city in california since 2011. >> i'm just very thankful for all the help that we've had over the years, and i'm looking forward to continuing the growth of mountain house.
