>> overheating and out of power. the effects of this ongoing heat wave are beginning to show themselves across the bay area, including here in the east bay. it was all dark at the veranda shopping center in concord, plus outages at nearby stoplights and temperatures aren't really cooling off overnight. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm julian glover. >> some parts of the bay area still in the mid 80s as we join you tonight. and we're only in the early side of this stretch of heat. >> in fact, today the national weather service said this current heat warning is the longest it's ever issued at eight days. the previous longest

was six days in 2017. >> the heat is slowing down public transit. bart and caltrain run trains at much lower speeds. when we see these triple digits, many east bay parks are being shut down this week, including lime ridge and mount diablo state park. and today, the north bay town of yountville had to cancel its upcoming 4th of july celebrations as a safety precaution. >> so let's bring in abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel for a closer look at the conditions. >> and you'll also notice a qr code at the bottom of the screen. you can scan that to follow along with the forecast. sandhya. >> yeah, julian and ama. this could be a prolonged period of historic proportions. so let's take a look at the records that were set today. san jose 102. tying the record 103. san rafael kentfield 105, in santa rosa. that broke the record. and oakland coming in at 90 degrees. it was plenty hot elsewhere, 107 in concord and fairfield, 106 degrees in livermore. excessive heat warnings for inland areas until 11 p.m. next tuesday. heat

advisory for san francisco and the bay shoreline in effect until next tuesday as well. but san francisco is going to go until this thursday evening, so let's talk about the high temperatures for tomorrow. 109 in concord. in antioch, 110 in fairfield. it's going to be blistering heat again. we also have the fire danger in our hills. red flag warning until 5 a.m. friday. we're talking about gusty winds, low humidity and of course critically dry fuels. so as you look at this forecast animation, you can see that we're going into the high to very high category of fire danger once again tomorrow i'll be back with a look at the full look at the accuweather seven day forecast, which includes the 4th of july fireworks weather as well ama all right. >> thank you sandhya. we will check back. this heat wave is sparking to life in parts of northern california. crews have gotten a grip on the fires in calistoga and solano counties, but one wildfire farther north in butte county is now becoming a problem called the thompson fire. it's burning about 2000

acres right on the border of the town of oroville. 13,000 residents are under evacuation orders after flames broke out this morning. there's no containment as fire teams from san francisco and san jose fire are on their way to help out. closer to home, the heat is seeming to have an impact on people's power. tonight, there are big outages for pg and e customers in the east bay. a couple of public safety power shut offs for small spots of the north bay. those are represented by those purple triangles. abc seven news reporter tim johns is here in studio, digging more into the dangers of this extreme heat. tim. >> yeah, i'm told it's not just the intensity of this current heat wave, but the duration of it that could cause the most problems. earlier tonight, i spoke with experts who say the potential for more power outages will likely hit their peak over the next 24 hours or so as the bay area bakes under the first heat wave of the summer. expectations are that it won't be short lived. temperatures are set to stay elevated into at least next week, causing experts to warn that this heat wave could be exceptionally dangerou.

>> this is the first heat wave of the season, which usually takes people off guard, right? we're not so acclimated to the heat just yet. >> michael schmaltz is a professor at cal state east bay who specializes in environmental health issues. he says over the coming days, it's important for people to take precautions against illnesses like heat stroke and heat exhaustion. >> many people experience heat differently, so those who are elderly children, the unhoused, may be at a greater risk of this exposure. but everyone can succumb to a heat related illness. >> but it's not just people that are feeling the impact of the heat. across the bay area. infrastructure is also feeling the strain. with thousands without power across the region tuesday night. that includes in concord, where outages affected everything from restaurants to hotels to normally crowded streets. despite some outages, though, severin borenstein of uc berkeley's energy institute at haas says things could be worse.

bornstein points to the massive upgrades the state has done to its power grid in recent years to help reduce the chance of flood alerts, which asked californians to reduce their energy use and the biggest change we've seen over the last few years is a massive installation of batteries. >> if you go back four years, california had essentially no batteries to store power, bornstein says. >> given the updates, he doesn't expect mass power outages like we've seen in the past. this time around, he believes, given the upcoming holiday and weekend, wednesday will likely be the day the grid is most stressed. >> we still have people going to work, and it's going to be the second day of the heat wave, so buildings are going to be hotter and not have had a chance to cool down overnight. >> now, as of tonight, the largest power outage is being reported here in the bay area are in the east bay. in addition to concord cities such as dublin, san ramon and danville also have no electricity due to the weather. i'm live in the studio tonight. tim johns, abc seven news. all right, tim, thank you. >> we are staying on top of all these heat alerts and warnings

for you. make sure you get the abc seven news bay area app to track things where you live. anytime you have access to the same live doppler seven tools our weather team uses, just be sure to enable the apps notifications. >> we have some new details on a crash in san francisco involving two police officers on motorcycles. >> that's right, both officers are recovering at san francisco general hospital tonight. it happened shortly before five along cesar chavez and pennsylvania abc7 news reporter j.r stone is at the hospital with the latest. >> reporter two san francisco police motorcycles down on the ground as emergency crews work to help the two officers who were riding them after a nasty collision with a car. >> they're both in good spirits, you know, i talked to one of them waiting to talk to a second one. >> san francisco police chief bill scott, at the hospital hours later to check on his officers. scott says the two motorcycle officers, both traveling westbound on cesar chavez, collided head on with this car going the other way, one witness told us his coworker

was startled after the crash. >> she said, that was my uber driver. that i was going to get in. she came in like a she went out, came in like a ghost, like, oh my word, i was going to get in that car. >> you know, chief scott would not confirm if the man driving the car was a rideshare driver or not. he also wouldn't say who crossed the center line before the collision, only saying the officer's condition and the driver's condition non-life threatening. tuesday afternoon, one officer after the next could be seen arriving at the hospital. even san francisco mayor london breed was here. >> this department is like a close knit family. so when somebody gets injured, particularly something this serious, you know, you this is this is pretty, pretty common. you know, we come here to support this is what we do. you know, we try to take care of each other and take care of our people. and when they need our support and when they, particularly when they are injured, you know, we're going to be here for them. >> the police chief tells me that at this point in the investigation, they don't believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in this crash. at

last check, both of these officers were here at san francisco general getting treatment. j.r. stone abc seven news. >> and in a statement tonight an uber spokesperson said we are continuing to look into this incident and are standing by to assist law enforcement on their investigation. now to your voice, your vote and a big update tonight on california's prop 47. it appeared there would be dueling measures on the november ballot seeking to reform the proposition. there will now only be one. governor newsom announced this evening a democratic backed initiative had the votes but was being withdrawn from consideration. critics say the measure was weak compared to an initiative version and backed by business groups that has already qualified for the ballot. it seeks to increase the penalties for certain drug offenses as well as retail theft. >> governor gavin newsom will be at the white house tomorrow, in what appears to be a show of support for president biden. he's therefore meeting of democratic governors. biden has come under pressure from some democrats to end his campaign

following his admittedly lackluster performance during last week's debate, the president appeared to lose his train of thought several times in the face off, with former president donald trump. it's raised questions about whether biden is fit to lead the country in a second term. he had a cold in a bad night. >> i would not see this as an episode. i would see this as what it was and what we believe it to be. which is it was a bad night. >> total of 2 million americans. >> congressman lloyd doggett, who represents the austin, texa, area today, became the first democrat to publicly call for the president to withdraw as the party's nominee. doggett says biden failed to reassure voters during that debate, and abc news anchor george stephanopoulos will sit down with president biden for the exclusive first television interview since that debate. you will get a first look on friday at 330 and 5:30 p.m. on world news tonight with david muir. you can see it right here on abc seven. then more on good morning america this weekend at 7 a.m, both on

saturday and sunday. the extended interview will air sunday at 8 a.m. on this week with george stephanopoulos, with more coming up on gma on monday. >> a man is under arrest for the death of a 74 year old woman at the powell street, bart station. investigators say the suspect pushed her as a train was approaching, causing her to hit her head on the train and fall onto the platform. we've learned the victim is corazon dandan. her family says she had left work last night around 11, after finishing a shift at a hotel in union square. dan dan was headed home to daly city, a bart employee who wants to remain anonymous, says the powell street station becomes a much different place at night. >> it's just a whole different animal at night, you know, there's a lot of stuff going on. there's fights, there's jumpings, there's people being shot. city is not safe anymore. >> the suspect is identified as a 49 year old unhoused man. this is the first homicide on bart this year. >> the oakland city council approved a budget today that

avoids layoffs and potentially drastic cuts for another year. there was the possibility that the fire and police department would be forced to make some reductions. the mayor says today's vote will at least hit pause and preserve public safety initiatives. >> this means that we're going to be able to continue to keep our cease fire. our crt are walking officers, so this means that oakland will be safe. >> here's the thing. there is a big caveat. a lot of the budget hangs on the city's sale of its stake in the oakland coliseum site. this would bring in over $100 million, but it's not clear when that will happen. >> we are using the illusion of funds that haven't arrived yet, and that we don't know when we'll arrive to try to balance a budget. and this is a wildly fiscally irresponsible decision. >> if the sale does not go through by september, then the city will be forced to slash millions of dollars in services. the recall of oakland mayor shinto is one step closer from

not safe and that could reasonably, you know, foreseeably cause death. >> the driver is currently not in custody, but we're told authorities are working with her attorneys. >> a police officer in ohio is getting praised for going above and beyond the call of duty to feed a hungry baby. >> there is a mom who has. she's had her milk dried up and she has no, she can't find anywhere to buy formula. is there anywhere anybody in here can turn on a cash register? >> i believe so, okay, because i'll buy it for her and take it to her. >> that is corporal hunter willoughby of the miami township police department. in the middle of his overnight shift, he received a frantic phone call about a new mother who was unable to feed her one week old infant. the officer went to a grocery store that was closed at the time and, as you saw, was eventually let in. he bought a few cans of formula and bottles and delivered them to the appreciative mom and refused to accept payment for any of it. >> the supreme court will review

the food and drug administration's regulation for e-cigarettes. the fda has denied applications for dozens of products, namely those flavored to taste like candy and desserts. well, that's prompted some legal challenges from e-cigarette makers. public health advocates are concerned about a spike in vaping among young americans. a study released just last year found an estimated 2.1 million children use e-cigarettes regularly, and the majority use flavored products. >> levi's stadium is known for getting hot, even when not in a heat wave. yeah, but that did not stop some passionate soccer fans from heading out to a match tonight. >> abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez was there as they got ready to tough it out. oh brasilenos fans poured into levi's stadium to see brazil face off with colombia at levi's stadium, brazil. >> brazil tuesday evening. the teams faced off in the group

jose 83 and redwood city 78 degrees. all right, let's talk about smoke. we did see it at around sunset coming into the city. the smoke is from the thompson fire in butte county. and you can see that from earlier tonight. the smoke forecast in the upper parts of the atmosphere is showing some of that drifting continuing to drift overnight into tomorrow morning. so you may wake up to some smoke and haze at least aloft, but keep an eye on it in case it starts to impact air quality. we certainly have a spare the air alert because of the heat and the stagnant air, along with the ozone it is going through tomorrow. poor air quality inland east bay and santa clara valley moderate elsewhere. high pressure, putting a lid on the atmosphere. and that's why we're seeing this poor air quality along with this heat wave. tomorrow is day two and we're looking at major to extreme heat risk inland. so definitely take it easy. you can see that in the reds and the purples. stay hydrated. find some shade. try to avoid being outdoors during the height of the heat uh- temperatures right

now. speaking of heat, we're still retaining it. 80s inland, 60s along the coast. a live view from our east bay hills. camera clear skies looking back across the bay. dangerous heat wave continues into next week. high fire danger. the next several days, and your 4th of july spectacular for the fireworks. let's go hour by hour tomorrow morning. starting off pretty warm inland along the coast. it's going to be mild. and then quickly those temperatures rising into the triple digits by the lunch hour topping 100 degrees. almost 110 by the early afternoon. i'll show you all. they'll ultimately end up. coastal flood advisory continues until 11:00 pm tomorrow, and that's because of astronomical high tides. watch out for minor, low lying flooding tomorrow you will notice in the morning low 50s. patchy fog right around half moon bay but upper 70s inland. most areas start off clear, but it could be a little hazy tomorrow afternoon. 100in the south bay in san jose, 104. in los gatos on the peninsula, 94, palo alto 99, in redwood city, right near the coast. you
