at jamaica today. >> a disaster has now been declared. and now the question is will the us be impacted? overnight, all airports on jamaica shut down ahead of hurricane beryl's arrival. the storm, expected to bring life threatening winds and eight foot storm surge. officials warning people in flood prone areas to prepare to evacuate the entire government and all relevant personnel are in a state of readiness to manage the disaste. reed kirk is one of several missionaries from texas cutting their trip to montego bay short. >> we love this place, we love this place, and we love the people here. and we have a special family here. >> the hurricane, once a category five packing 165 mile per hour winds. the strongest july hurricane on record before it hit the southeast caribbean, killing at least six people. this woman posting video from saint vincent and the grenadines where a bit of cleanup here. >> all this galvanizing stuff in the road. so we have some

helping hands around these boats tossed like toys in barbados. >> impacts on the u.s. remain unclear. beryl is expected to weaken in the gulf. some models take it over southern texas next week in the meantime, triple digit heat is expected for the 4th of july from phoenix all the way to oregon. the hot and dry conditions in northern california are fueling two large wildfires, forcing 13,000 people to evacuate around oroville and the south. also, baking a heat index of 110 is expected today in louisiana and arkansas. >> ignoring climate change is deadly and dangerous, and irresponsible. >> yesterday, president biden proposed new rules for people who work in extreme heat that would require employers to provide access to drinking water. a break area to cool down, and mandatory paid breaks. if finalized, the rules would protect everyone from farm workers to delivery drivers. meanwhile severe storms are expected today from missouri to ohio. we'll check your forecast in just a few moments.

>> president biden is now blaming his travel schedule for his poor debate performance last week, days after his campaign said he had a cold and now a democrat in congress is publicly calling for biden to withdraw from the race. here's abc's leyna moise. >> this morning, president biden is apologizing for last week's debate performance, telling supporters at a private fundraiser, i wasn't very smart saying he was in at least 15 time zones. prior to the debate, biden saying, i decided to travel around the world a couple of times shortly before the debate. i didn't listen to my staff, and then i almost fell asleep on stage. but biden returned to the u.s. 12 days before his showdown with former president trump. and now the new york times reports. officials and insiders who've spent time with the president over the last few months have been concerned about his mental fitness, reporting that although he's been sharp and engaged most of the time, he's also appeared confused or listless or would lose the thread of conversations, adding that european leaders were, quote,

shocked by a noticeable decline in mr. biden's physical state. the times also reports an afternoon nap was scheduled for biden during debate prep. biden's campaign has been on defense, calling concerned democrats bedwetters, but former president obama appears to be one of those concerned democrats. the washington post reports. obama has privately expressed that biden's path to reelection grew more challenging after the debate, and former house speaker nancy pelosi says questions about the president's fitness are legitimate. >> i think it's a legitimate question to say, is this an episode or is this a condition? >> abc's rachel scott pressing the white house. >> pelosi said it's a legitimate question to ask if this is an episode or is this is a condition? >> which one is it? >> well, what i can tell you is that, he had a cold and a bad night. i would not see this as an episode. i would see this as

what it was and what we believe it to be. which is it was a bad night, and he did on top of that, he had a cold. and that is the reality of the situation. >> congressman lloyd doggett of texas is the first democrat in congress to call on biden to drop out. >> i think the setback that has occurred will be difficult to overcome under any circumstance. >> and yesterday, a cnn poll was released showing vice president kamala harris performing better against donald trump than biden. >> one of the arguments that the biden team have used is that he's the only one who can win. well, if you see this from those numbers, from the vice president, that might that might call that into question. >> but harris is doubling down on her support. look joe biden is our nominee. >> we beat trump once and we're going to beat him again as other top democrats also considered potential replacements for biden weigh in, reaffirming their support for the president while acknowledging that voters need answers. >> i don't think that there's anything wrong with asking the

the impact of the court's ruling. >> new hope for early stage alzheimer patients the fda has approved a second drug that slows memory loss. kissena is a monthly infusion that was found to slow cognitive decline by up to 35. it costs about $32,000 per year and is expected to be covered by medicare. risk factors include possible bleeding in the brain. >> now to the fight for justice. more than 100 years after the tulsa race massacre, two survivors are now requesting a federal investigation after their lawsuit against the city was dismissed. this morning, the last known survivors of the tulsa race massacre say they're not done fighting for justice in their lifetime. >> the very survivors who are depicted on this wall are crying out from the soil for peace. >> 109 year old lessie benningfield randle and 110 year old viola fletcher sued tulsa, trying to force the city to pay reparations for the destruction

of the once thriving black district during the 1921 tulsa race massacre. that's when a white mob, some of whom were deputized by the city, burned down the district, killing as many as 300 people. >> people lying on the streets bleeding and someone came to the neighborhood saying that all the black people should get out of town, that the white people was killing everyone. >> randle and fletcher claimed the city caused a public nuisance because of the massacre, and claimed they continue to face racially disparate treatment to this day. but last month, oklahoma supreme court found the plaintiffs grievances are legitimate. they do not fall within the scope of our state's public nuisance statute. now, randle and fletcher are asking the u.s. justice department to investigate the massacre, a spokesperson wrote a statement on their behalf. >> we are deeply saddened that we may not live long enough to see the state of oklahoma or the united states of america honestly confront and right the

wrongs of one of the darkest days of our history. >> the justice department so far has declined to comment. >> time now for your wednesday weather. >> good morning. we continue to track powerful hurricane beryl passing south of hispaniola. we expect to see this make major impacts as a category three hurricane into jamaica later this evening. and tonight, and then it will begin to weaken some due to stronger wind upstairs aloft in the form of wind shear. eventually, this will slow its forward motion and move into south texas with some very heavy rain. landfall may be in mexico or south texas at the beginning of next week, but 4 to 8in of rain are expected for accuweather. i'm jeff cornish for abc news. >> coming up, a mega merger in hollywood that could pave the way for a new streaming service. >> also ahead, the battle over working from home. a major new lawsuit as companies try to force employees back to the

across the country. this week on good morning america, good morning america, good morning america. >> a developing story in southern california. police in newport beach say a woman was killed after a group tried to rob her outside an upscale shopping mall. one suspect fled and was arrested. police say another suspect jumped in a getaway car, with a third person hitting and killing the victim. with their vehicle. they were arrested after a chase and now a new legal showdown over working remotely. >> four years after the pandemic, it's clear many workers across america are not ready to return to the office full time. >> we're living in a new day and age right now ahead of this long holiday weekend, remote workers are fighting back, opposing new mandates that could soon force them to return to the office.

>> the latest to fight back 6000 city employees in philadelphia, their union now suing the mayor, who wants them back in person full time. july 15th. the lawsuit claims the mandate violates their contract and will make post-pandemic staffing shortages even worse. >> having that type of work flexibility allows folks to be able to be successful at work and be successful at home, the mayor is trying to entice the workers with more generous parental leave and other benefits, insisting that in-person workers will create a more visible and accessible government. >> but when it comes to today's workforce, new research shows employers looking to fill all those cubicles again have a challenging argument to make. i just don't think that forcing people back into the office has worked. >> the study showed that it doesn't improve collaboration or creativity, and a recent study found hybrid workers, those splitting their time between home and the office, are happier. >> 79% say they feel less drained, 78% feel less stressed, and 72% are less anxious. of course, working remotely is easier in certain industries than others. a court hearing is

overdue. the families of two soldiers from the civil war will receive medals of honor in their name at the white house today for the role the men played in a secret operation to hijack a train. here's abc's christiane cordero. >> it was the mission that earned six men the first medals of honor. more than 160 years ago. their story inspired and later tv shows and movies. in april 1862, the group known as andrews raiders, 18 union soldiers and two civilians a confederate train in georgia called the general deep in enemy territory. their plan drive the general north and destroy the train tracks along the way, cutting off a vital confederate supply line. >> at that point, it could have shortened the war, and there could have been hundreds of thousands of young men that would have survived the war. >> but the daring mission was unsuccessful. the men were forced to abandon the train. some escaped, but others were captured and executed, including

philip, shadrach, and george wilson. the next year, six of the raiders became the first men to receive the nation's highest military award. >> secretary of war stanton decided and president lincoln that these men should be honored with this newly minted medal. the medal of honor. >> to date, 19 of the raiders have received the medal, but today that number becomes 21, with president biden set to bestow the award on shadrach and wilson a couple of weeks ago, i got a call from president biden and he invited me down to get the medal. descendants of the two men will be on hand today to honor their sacrifice. >> you had to really love your country. i just wish everyone could have that feeling and understand what those men gave. we got to put the past behind and just come forward and just be one country. >> chandler says private wilson's final words at the gallows should be remembered. the union soldier said, i have good feelings toward the people of the south. our mission was so the flag could fly over one union. andrea.
