dangerous heat wave moving through the bay area right now. >> here's a live look from our mount tam camera this morning. we are tracking the heat and the impact you can expect. >> good morning. it is wednesday, july 3rd start. >> of course, the check of that forecast with drew. >> yes. for another day we have those excessive heat warnings, heat advisories in effect, these advisories and warnings will continue through next tuesday. so today if you're keeping count, is day two of what will be an eight day heat wave. take a look at our temperatures in our hills right now, especially in the north bay. we're closing in on 90 degrees already this morning in the oakland hills. it's 83 degrees right now. it's a similar story in the santa cruz mountains, so it is quite warm out there as you go up in elevation. even at the surface, it is a warm start to the morning. 61 in the city right now, 66 in oakland at 71, in san jose, 73, in cloverdale. brentwood right now holding at 82 degrees. so we are in store for another warm to hot day across the region. excessive heat warnings are in effect inland. once again, those temperatures warm very fast,

already hot before lunchtime and then into the afternoon. we're surpassing 105 again, just like yesterday in our hottest cities around the bay, shoreline heat advisories, they are in effect again. we're going into the 90s around the bay shoreline with lots of sunshine along the coast. it will be mild, but this is the place to seek that heat relief. we'll keep those temperatures in the 70s close to the ocean. let's check in with gloria. see, those drive times are doing this morning. >> good morning drew. so far, no major incidents to report this morning. this is a live look right now from our san mateo camera. and you can see here on the bridge, looking pretty good from the toll plaza to foster city. will take about 16 minutes. right now, if you take smart, that's sonoma-marin area rail transit. they are going to be on a holiday schedule tomorrow, but they're also adding some evening trains wednesday through sunday. that's so people who go to the county fair there can stay for the fireworks in the evening. and looking live in san jose so far, really quiet on 87. >> thanks, gloria. people are waking up without electricity

and pockets of the bay area. so here's a look at p-g-and-e's outage map right now. thousands were left without power yesterday, but it has been coming back slowly overnight. the green means up to 50 customers. yellow up to 500 and orange is up to 5000. and the purple triangles you see are p-g-and-e's public safety power shutoffs, all of them in the north bay. you can get out your phone and scan the code on your screen to get the very latest information on the heat wave, and you can find a link to this page to this p-g-and-e's map. i should say, plus information on cooling centers and health information. we'll keep up that qr code throughout the morning. there are concerns of hot weather could be exceptionally dangerous, especially for those people who are trying to get through the days without any kind of electricity. abc seven news reporter lena howland is in the east bay, so, lena, it's important to take precautions. >> reggie. that's right. and i'm in downtown walnut creek right now where they are expected to hit at least 103 degrees today. now, experts are saying that the

potential for more heat related power outages are likely to hit their peak today, given the upcoming holiday and weekend across the bay area, infrastructure is feeling the strain, with thousands without power across the region tuesday night that includes in concord, where outages affected everything from restaurants to hotels to normally crowded streets. some of that power has since been restored, though one expert from uc berkeley's institute, energy institute at haas, says things could be much worse. that's because of the massive upgrades the state has done to its power grid in recent years to help reduce the chance of flex alerts, which asked californians to reduce their energy use. >> the biggest change we've seen over the last few years is a massive installation of batteries. if you go back four years, california had essentially no batteries to store power. >> cal iso says the state's power grid is currently stable

and they are not forecasting supply shortfalls. they say they've gone into what's called a restricted maintenance operation. that means operators will avoid taking equipment offline for routine maintenance, assuring that all generators and transmission lines are available to supply higher loads. the good news is no flex alerts have been issued, so far this week. live in walnut creek, lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you lena. the contra costa fire protection district is advising you to avoid hiking trails. many local and regional parks are closing down because of the heat. mount diablo state park is shut down and may stay that way into the weekend. lime ridge open space in concord is closed, as are many walnut creek open spaces and parks. east bay regional parks shut down a long list of places through the end of the weekend to coincide with this sustained heat wave. >> many east bay regional parks will remain open for visitors during this week's increased temperatures, including swim facilities and shoreline regional parks. unfortunately, we had to close some, hill and

inland parks, due to the extreme fire conditions and heat. >> all park districts are asking you to check your websites for details before heading out. now this is video of rescued wildlife being hand-carried into the lindsay wildlife rehabilitation hospital in walnut creek. you might see unusual wildlife behavior in this heat, including birds like barn owls falling from nests like the swifts and the swallows. >> the babies will actually start jumping out due to the heat, and in cases like that, you need to contact your nearest wildlife rehabilitation center. >> you might also see crows or ravens panting or squirrels doing what's called splooting when they have their bellies down on a cool surface like a sidewalk. you should not try to pick up wildlife, though. what you can do is leave water out around your property to help animals who might need a drink. >> again, we're going to be putting this qr code up on the

america this weekend at 7 a.m. both saturday and sunday. the extended interview will air sunday at 8 a.m. on this week with george stephanopoulos, with more coming up on monday on gma. >> in the east bay, the oakland city council has decided to bet on the sale of the coliseum site to help them close a massive budget deficit. the budget that was passed yesterday avoids the possibility of big cuts to the fire and police departments, mayor chang says. it also preserves public safety initiatives. >> this means that we're going to be able to continue to keep our cease fire, our crt, our walking officers. so this means that oakland will be safe. >> a huge portion of this budget hangs on the $100 million that will come once the sale of the coliseum site is complete. but here's the problem we don't know when that's going to happen. >> we are using the illusion of funds that haven't arrived yet, and that we don't know when will arrive to try to balance a budget. and this is a wildly fiscally irresponsible decision. >> if the sale of the coliseum

site doesn't go through by september, the budget deal falls apart and then the city has to be forced again to look at slashing millions of dollars in services. the recall of oakland mayor shengtao is one step away from landing on the november general election ballot. the city council adopted the recall resolution yesterday, and there was a first reading of an ordinance to hold the recall november 5th. the second reading happens july 16th. oakland residents could be voting on two recalls in november. if this goes through, that would be the mayor's recall and the recall of alameda county district attorney pamela price, which has already been been approved by the county's ballot. >> back to the heat. now, san francisco is hoping its public pools can help take your mind off of the heat. this week. all nine of them will be free today because of this hot weather. they are all indoor pools except mission community pool on linda street. >> let's take a look at highs. i want to show you the south bay, specially because this is one of

the areas that was excessively hot yesterday. san jose had a high of 102 yesterday afternoon, which was the hottest in nearly two years. this is an area we're watching closely because as you look at the heat risk map today, most of us are underneath those red or magenta colors. and that is a major to extreme heat risk. as we go again into the afternoon, you want to take it easy. heat is a cumulative effect. it can really wear your body down day after day. so highs versus average again. we are so far above average. most areas about 20 degrees plus above where we typically land this time of the year typically in july. we're in the 70s and 80s in the afternoon, but our hottest areas like livermore approaching 110 later on this afternoon, our red flag warning does continue not only the hot weather, but also the increased risk of fire danger in the north bay mountains, the east bay hills and the santa cruz mountains that will last through friday. because of the combo of the heat and low humidity. we'll keep you updated on anything changes with that. here's future weather as we go hour by hour. just watch these temperatures

street bart station. investigators say the suspect pushed this woman as a train was approaching, causing her to fall onto the platform. she is the victim, corazon dandan. her family says she had left work late monday night after finishing a shift at a hotel in union square. she was headed home to daly city. bart employee who wants to remain anonymous, says the powell street station becomes a much different place at night. >> it's just a whole different animal at night, you know, there's a lot of stuff going on. there's fights, there's jumpings, there's people being shot. city is not safe anymore.

>> the suspect is identified as a 49 year old unhoused man. this is the first homicide on bart this year. an update to a tragic story we've been following for months now. the deadly crash at a bus stop in san francisco's west portal neighborhood. a 78 year old driver is now facing four felony charges for that crash in march that killed an entire family of four. san francisco's police chief and district attorney said. the initial investigation shows there's no indication the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or suffered from a medical issue at the time. the vehicle was also found to be fully functional. the driver is currently not in custody, but we're told authorities are working with her attorneys in the middle of this heat wave. we're facing high fire danger and illegal fireworks can easily spark a fire. more than 500 pounds of illegal fireworks are now off the streets in oakland. police say they seized a large fireworks stash found inside a car near sixth avenue and foothill boulevard. the confiscated fireworks have been

turned over to the oakland fire department for proper disposal. in the south bay, fire officials are working to stop illegal fireworks by hosting a first of its kind 4th of july celebration and one part of san jose. the city is hosting two major events now for residents to watch fireworks the annual almaden lake event and for the first time, east san jose is getting a city sponsored event at lake cunningham park by creating a hub and a safe place for people to come and enjoy fireworks. >> that's my hope that we will deter any illegal activities from happening in the lake. >> cunningham event starts at 7 p.m. with fireworks at 9:00. this is all tomorrow. a reminder all types of fireworks, even the kind labeled safe and sane, are banned in san jose. the only city in sonoma county that sells safe and sane fireworks is now suspending the sale and use of them because of this extreme heat. >> the city of cloverdale said it worked with the police and fire district on this decision. a red flag warning is in effect

look, some of our temperatures in our hills in the north bay, some of our hilltops are close to 90 degrees. this morning, even the oakland hills is quite warm. a current temperature of 83 degrees right now closer down to the surface. we're in the 60s and 70, so it is quite warm this morning. it's another hot afternoon along the way. here's a live look at santa cruz. this is the area you go seek that relief. the coast remains relatively comfortable in the 70s today, but the bay shoreline, we're back into the 90s and inland. we're getting close to 110 in our hottest spots this afternoon. so a high of 88 in the city today, 92 in oakland, we're hitting 100in san jose, 109 in concord, 106 in santa rosa. but the coast from half moon bay to santa cruz will keep you in the 70s. let's check in those commute times with gloria. good morning. >> good morning. yeah. you know, we're going to get started with your mass transit update. if you take samar there is service that's been suspended. so this is trip one. southbound is canceled for today, and trip three is on a 20 minute delay right now. if you take ace, ace

three is delayed five minutes right now. and bart is on time and looking live right now at our san rafael camera, you can see the traffic is flowing pretty nicely here. no major issues in the north bay. cars are starting to fill in a little bit southbound, heading towards the city. guys. >> thank you. gloria crews are dealing with a wildfire in wine country. it's called the toll fire and it's burning in napa county. cal fire says it broke out near calistoga yesterday, prompting evacuations that order has since been downgraded to a warning. cal fire says the fire has burned 50 acres so far. at last check, it's 15% contained. crews say the weather has been the biggest issue to challenging. >> as you can see back here, we're in a very steep slope, very steep area. so adding that, contributing that to the mild, mild to moderate wind conditions that we have and dry dryness of the vegetation, it makes it challenging for our crews to be able to gain access and be able to suppress the fire as we could

see flames on the hill. >> uh- approximately, i don't know, maybe half a mile away >> george and joni hahn left right away. george took this video of a cal fire plane. you can see they're fighting the fire near his house. and we showed them their home through the lens of our news camera. luckily, it was still there. now the fire is burning in the same area as the glass fire in 2020, which is understandably very triggering for a lot of people who lost their homes. >> then in solano county, a brush fire broke out in an area where the group, california forever is planning to build a new city. it's being called the denverton. fire crews say they've stopped forward progress of the fire. about two miles south of travis air force base. at one point, the fire triggered the closure of westbound lanes of highway 12 at scali lane. the size of the fire is still in question. the solano county sheriff's office has it at 470 acres. cal fire says 25 acres. we've reached out to both agencies to get some

clarification. >> one wildfire further north in butte county is now becoming a problem. it's called the thompson fire. cal fire is now saying it's burned more than 3000 acres right on the border of the town of oroville. 13,000 residents are under evacuation orders. there's no containment as fire teams from san francisco and san jose fire are on their way to help out. well, we're entering day two of this bay area heatwave. the national weather service says this current heat warning is the longest they've ever issued at eight days. the previous longest was six days in 2017. the heat is slowing down public transit. bart and caltrain have to run trains at much slower speeds. when we reach triple digits. now, many east bay parks are being shut down this week, including lime ridge and mount diablo state park and the north bay town of yountville had to cancel its upcoming 4th of july celebration as a safety precaution this morning. >> people are still dealing with heat related power outages. abc seven news reporter lena howland is in the east bay with impacts

to customers there, and more outages are expected today. >> hey reggie, that's right. we're in walnut creek right now where the power is on, but there's still more than 700 customers waking up without power across contra costa county. and we've learned that given today's triple digit heat, we are expecting even more heat related outages. one expert from uc berkeley's energy institute at haas says major upgrades have been made to the state's energy grid over the last few years, including a massive installation of batteries. that's why they're not expecting mass power outages like we've seen in the past this time around. but given the upcoming holiday and weekend, they're expecting, today will likely be the day the grid is stressed the most. >> we're still have people going to work, and it's going to be the second day of the heat wave, so buildings are going to be hotter and not have had a chance to cool down overnight. >> with triple digit heat

seven bay area app, available wherever you stream. >> this morning. two san francisco police officers are recovering after a very scary crash with an uber driver. it happened around 5 p.m. yesterday at cesar chavez street and pennsylvania avenue. the officers were on motorcycles when they crashed head on with that car. it's not clear who crossed the median. both officers were taken to san francisco general hospital to be treated outside the hospital. police chief bill scott and both the office said both the officers and the driver had non-life threatening injuries. >> this is this is pretty, pretty common. you know, we come here to support this is what we do. you know, we try to take care of each other and take care of our people. and when they need our support and when they, particularly when they are injured, you know, we're going to be here for them now at this time, officials don't believe drugs or alcohol were involved in a statement, an uber spokesperson said we're continuing to look into this incident and are standing by to assist law enforcement on their investigation. >> almost a third of the deadliest freeways in california are here in the bay area. that's

areas that will go well above 100 degrees today. and those are the areas that will have the most risk of heat related illness when it comes to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. we're also watching our red flag warning very closely. this continues through friday morning. the combination not only the hot temperatures, but also some dry northerly winds that could drop humidity levels down to 10% during the daytime hours. looking at the forecast inland today, it's a hot one back into the triple digits exceeding 105 and our hottest spots later on today around the bay shoreline. a heat advisory is in effect, good reason. we're in the 90s with full sunshine by 4 p.m. and then along the coast again. it's mild and we are not too hot, but temperatures still above average. we'll have full sunshine and highs along the coast will go into the 70s. we'll take a closer look at your 4th of july forecast

measure was weak compared to the republican version, which is appearing on the ballot. that measure seeks to increase the penalties for certain drug offenses, as well as retail theft. >> ucsf is officially acquiring two of dignity health's longest serving hospitals, saint francis memorial hospital and saint mary's medical center will be joining ucsf, along with its outpatient san francisco clinic. a settlement agreement received approval yesterday in san francisco superior court. both hospitals will continue to participate in medi-cal and medicare. ucsf says the facilities will either maintain or expand their staffing and service. the hospitals will join the ucsf system on august first. >> now it's your morning money report. ai is boosting venture capital funding. new data from pitchbook shows a jump from $38 billion in the first quarter to more than $55 billion in the second. that's a 47% increase. reuters reports that surge is largely driven by significant investments in ai companies.

so our extreme heat continues. highs in microclimates 104 in los gatos today, 98 in santa clara, 100 in san jose. the coast is relatively comfortable. santa cruz a high of 73 degrees along the peninsula near 100. in redwood city, 95 in los altos, 94 in mountain view, 72, though for half moon bay across the city will keep it in the 70s for the sunset. the richmond daly city near 90, though, as you head downtown upper 80s for the mission. the castro near 90 for south san francisco in the north bay. the coast is comfortable, but you head away from the coast in that extreme heat really hits us. 108 in cloverdale, 105 in sonoma, 100 in san rafael, 102 in vallejo. heat advisories in the east bay, 92 in oakland, 96, fremont 99, castro valley and inland. today, that extreme heat risk continues. 109 in concord, the same in livermore, hitting 110 in brentwood. in fairfield overnight tonight, another mild night, 60s, 70s away from the coast. so again, that leads to another hot day on the way for
