take you to the hot weather resources on abc7 news.com. now day two of our extended heat wave. >> and here are some of the highest temperatures we are talking about the east bay at 108, in dublin, 106 in saint helena, san jose 101. >> today, while san francisco is spared from the brunt of the heat, reaching a high so far today of 75. >> okay, so let's start with your accuweather forecast. spencer, will we get some relief tonight or probably not much tonight? >> dion the temperatures the overnight lows are going to be on the warm side in most locations. it is certainly hot right now. this is a very stubborn heat wave. current temperature readings. some of the locations that you and julian just mentioned have actually gotten hotter, even as we speak, as 108 in livermore right now, 110 in saint helena, 105 in cloverdale, 100 sonoma, 104 in danville, 104, 102 in gilroy, 97, san jose, 84 in oakland and 98 in san rafael. you can see this heat is holding on. and as you mentioned, some of our advisories and warnings have now been extended. the excessive heat alert or

excessive heat warning for the bay area has been extended now until 11 p.m. next wednesday, and that covers virtually all of the bay area. and obviously under these excessively hot conditions, there's an increased risk of heat related illness. also, our red flag warning for high fire danger has been extended now until 11 until 9 p.m. rather on saturday. and that's, of course, in effect for the santa cruz mountains, the east bay hills and the mountains and hills of the north bay. humidity levels will be down as low as 11% at times, with winds gusting up to about 25mph. obviously increasing the risk of fire. right now the wind is well, it's on the breezy side. we don't have very strong sustained winds at the moment, but we are getting occasional gusts over a 20mph. so keep monitoring all of this. i'll give you the full accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later. it's the heat wave is not going to break for a while, so it's going to be several more days of this. >> julian okay. we appreciate it. thank you so much, spencer. let's talk about the impact now in the east bay, the city of

antioch has canceled its 4th of july parade because of this extreme heat. we're talking about. abc seven news reporter ryan curry spoke with the mayor, who says the weather there is dangerous. reporter. >> there's a reason this playground is abandoned on a sunny day. it's too hot outside for children to use it. temperatures in the east bay are in the triple digits for a second day, and the heat will continue for another week, forcing the city of antioch to cancel its 4th of july parade. >> it's too hot and it's dangerous, and the last thing we're going to do is put, people's, health in jeopardy. >> we're here in antioch and look at the temperature gauge already. it's past 100 degrees, and conditions on thursday will be about the same. the mayor says asking people to be outside in the middle of the day was just not smart to have people out at such dangerous temperatures would be foolish of the city. >> and then i've put out a call for folks to, you know, cancel activities if they're out and about. and we need to practice what we preach the antioch parade usually takes place in the late morning to early afternoon, when temperatures are

expected to be some of the hottest. >> the neighboring city of brentwood, however, is ready to let the good times roll. decorations and signs are up downtown. >> i would say definitely bring, you know, bring your chair, bring water, bring bring some sunblock. >> amy tilley runs the downtown brentwood coalition. she says since the parade starts and ends in the morning, it's cooler than later in the day. >> i'm very pleased i know our residents are super pleased that our event begins early, begins at 930. we have seen some cancellations in nearby cities because their parades were going to be later, so ours is at 930. it's not very long. >> as the city prepares for the holiday, the heat is already keeping some hard at work. >> oh my gosh, it gets really busy, especially in the evening when there's lots of events downtown. >> a couple weeks ago there was a car show and we were so packed. >> scoop ice cream has been slammed all week and on thursday they expected to be even busier. tomorrow's 4th of july, which is actually our busiest day of the year. >> so we're going to have like a couple stands like around town. so it's not like super, super busy because we often have like

a line out the door. it's crazy. >> a holiday heat wave that will make everyone try to stay cool in the east bay. ryan curry, abc seven news meantime, the city of concord has opened a cooling center for those seniors at the parkside circle with air conditioning and comfortable seating available. >> people are encouraged to take refuge at the concord community pool on caswell road, as well. other suggested places to cool down are the meadow home, spray park, sun valley shopping center, and six flags hurricane harbor. san francisco hopes its nine public pools can help cool you down this week. all are free today because of the hot weather, that is, except for the mission community pool on linda street. all are indoor pools. >> the water certainly a nice place to be today while the pools are open, some parks are closed because of the extreme fire danger due to the hot weather out there. alum rock park in san jose is closed through sunday. east bay regional parks has shut down 30 parks through friday morning due to the extreme fire danger. the major closures there include

anthony chabot briones, ohlone, mission peak and wildcat canyon. the trails at tilden park are also closed. anyone thinking about heading to a park for the holiday should check in advance. well, p-g-and-e's is just planning outages. the utility company gave us a rundown of what else they're doing to prepare for the heat wave. >> we've inspected all of our critical substations to ensure all equipment is operating properly and no apparent issues. we have flown uh- helicopters 50 transmission lines just to proactively patrol to make sure that we don't see any evidence of any type of, tree or anything that could come in contact with our lines and disrupt service. >> there is a possibility for a public safety power shut off for counties in the central coast because of fire danger. p-g-and-e's says energy usage this week is nearing a record set back in september of 2022. the heat is making for bad air in the bay area.

>> you can see the smoggy air as we take a look across the bay towards the bay bridge. there is a spare the air alert in effect today and tomorrow for high levels of ozone in the air. air quality managers are asking people to help out our air quality by driving less. in developing news now, a wicked wildfire in butte county has forced thousands of people to evacuate, and it is destroyed homes and injured firefighters. it's called the thompson fire. and governor newsom has declared a state of emergency. that fire is burning near oroville. fire teams from san francisco, san jose and the entire bay area are helping out on the fire lines. abc7 news reporter j.r stone joins us now and j.r. the state says it is using every available tool to tackle this fire. that is how serious it is. >> yeah, they certainly are dionne. that's why there are more than a thousand firefighters fighting these flames right now. the fire acreage here has increased more than 3500 acres of burned. and i learned in the last hour that seven firefighters have been injured fighting these flames.

reporter flames tearing apart structures near oroville in butte county. vehicles burned there, as well as the thompson fire, continues to increase in size. >> kind of a roller coaster of emotions, you know, like like. but i've tried to keep it, you know, a good a good outlook on everything because, you know, what are you going to do about 28,000 people have been affected by some sort of evacuation order. >> a viewer sent us this video showing the hillside burning all around the iconic o, which stands for oroville. evacuees have been able to take some of their animals but have had to leave. others behind. >> her friend didn't follow us. her best friend is a lamb and the lamb had she didn't see us leave and i couldn't, i had to go. so i left the gate open so the lamb could get out. and she misses her friend. she keeps crying for her friend. >> caitlin brewer is under an evacuee warning. went with her

parents to their friend's house last night. busy to say the least. >> i live with my parents, my sister, niece, brother and me. so that's a good load right there. and then we have dog, two cats, and then we moved on to our friend's house, who also had about five people there. >> some who live in oroville say their focus is solely on the dam. >> one thing that did kind of concern me that i was assured isn't a problem is the dam, failing because of some things burning? >> i asked those with cal fire about that dam. >> there's always concern, right? when, there's fire in the area of some critical infrastructure, crews are aware of that. we're aware of it. we're aware of the problems that that can cause the local community and area here. so officials for the dam and the fire officials were, on high alert and always checking and see where the progress is with that. >> i just feel awful, you know what i mean? i just feel really, really bad. it's to me, it's

one was hit and deputies tell us they did not shoot back residents inside the building. they were evacuated. the suspect was taken into custody about three hours later. well, now to a story we've been following for five years. and today a court made a major decision in the case of two bay area men convicted of killing a plain clothes police officer in italy, an italian appeals court upheld the convictions of finnegan, elder and gabrielle natalia, but he reduced their sentences 15 years for elder and 11 years for natalia yort. the two friends were teenagers when convicted in 2021, prosecutors sought sentences for at least 23 years in prison. however, italy's highest court ordered a new trial last year after concluding the 2nd may not have known that the victim was a police officer. >> new developments now in the mass shooting during oakland's juneteenth celebration at lake merritt. according to the east bay times, 23 year old jordan kelly of oakland is now in custody charged with four felony counts of assault with a

while. let's take a look at the satellite radar composite image. you can see this massive high pressure system that's dominating our weather picture. now it's a clockwise circulation bringing winds to us mainly out of the north. and it's compressing any little marine layer that may try to form. it's not producing any powerful winds right now. at least the sustained winds are just breezy on the breezy side about 15 16mph with occasional gusts. and although it doesn't feel cooler to me than yesterday, you can see many locations right now are about 1234 degrees cooler than at this time yesterday, so maybe that'll put you in a cooler mood. although it's certainly pretty hot out there right now in san francisco is only 7777 degrees 84. in oakland we have mid to upper 90s right now at hayward, san jose, redwood city and 68 at half moon bay. blue sky over the golden gate of the temperature readings right now 101 at santa rosa, we have mid 90s at petaluma and napa. 106 at fairfield and concord, 108 right now in livermore. and on we go to our forecast headlines. dangerous heat wave will now be with us at least through next

reporter melanie woodrow explains where some cars with recalls are still being sold. >> millions of vehicles travel across the bay area every day, and a percentage of them have recalled takata airbags. the national highway traffic safety administration has called it the largest and most complex safety recall in u.s. history. still despite the nearly ten year old recall, millions of people are still at risk. patrick olson is editor in chief of carfax. >> there are more than 700,000 literal time bombs waiting in california for someone to get, and that's why we need to get these airbags out of these cars. >> our abc seven news data analyst standardized the data to account for the number of registered vehicles per state in california, there are 2046 unfixed takata airbags per 100,000 registered vehicles, putting california somewhere in the middle. when it comes to states with the most unfixed takata airbags per 100,000 registered vehicles, the issue is the chemicals inside the inflator. >> normally, when your car gets hit, they combine and explode

and fill the airbag, which protects the passenger protects the driver. these airbags, though, when exposed over time to heat and humidity, develop moisture in those chemicals and that creates an explosion that far exceeds what everyone intended. that can turn the metal band around. the airbag into shrapnel, literally flying pieces of metal that go into the cabin of a car. >> while existing laws prohibit car dealers from selling a new car with an unfixed recall, and prohibit rental companies from renting a car with an unfixed recall. there is no existing law for used car sellers. >> congress has not acted to enact that searching the web, i found a used car for sale in the bay area with an open recall for takata airbags. >> there's a recall on this car. >> this used car lot owner told me he didn't know before taking the car in question off the business's website, where it had been listed for sale. even though he wasn't doing anything wrong by selling it. did you know it had a recall on it? a lot of car recall, nhtsa tells abc seven news it does not have authority to require used car dealerships to disclose an open

recall to a buyer or potential buyer, the federal trade commission tells abc seven news the used car rule does not have a requirement that open recalls be disclosed, but it does require that dealers attach a buyer's guide to the vehicle, which includes information about where consumers can search for open recalls on a vehicle. >> that's why it's important to look at your vehicle history report, get a mechanic to check out a car before you buy it to make sure you understand everything that could be wrong with it. >> in march, three u.s. senators introduced the used car safety recall repair act, which, if passed, would require car dealers to repair any outstanding safety recalls in used cars prior to selling, leasing or loaning them to consumers. california congressman mark desaulnier is on the house committee on transportation and infrastructure. >> clearly, the senators bringing this up is appropriate that we need to really look at this. it's shocking to me. the numbers, and clearly there has to be something done. >> in the meantime, you can check the vin number of any vehicle you're purchasing on nhtsa's website to see whether or not there are any open recalls. nhtsa says 27 people in

the united states have been killed by takata airbags, and at least 400 have been injured for seven. on your side melanie woodrow, abc seven news. >> two san francisco police officers are recovering after a crash with an uber driver. it all happened at about 5 p.m. yesterday at cesar chavez street and pennsylvania avenue. the officers were on motorcycles when they crashed head on with the car. take a look at the scene from sky seven overhead. it is not clear who crossed the median in this case. both officers were taken to san francisco general hospital. those officers and the driver are expected to recover at this time. officials do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved. an uber spokesperson says the company is looking into the incident. >> cal fire crews are going to have more time to rest and recover soon. it's thanks to funding at the new state budget and also a deal with their union. currently, crews work 72 hours on or three consecutive 24 hour shifts and then have four
