only day two. >> the current heat advisories and warnings are being extended again all the way through next wednesday. today, antioch announced it's canceling tomorrow's 4th of july parade because of all of the heat out there. john ville announced yesterday that it was canceling its event. san francisco opened its public pools for free today. >> today's alerts spare the air, red flag, as well as heat advisories and excessive heat warnings. let's get right to our weather expert. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. for details of these potentially dangerous conditions. sandhya. yeah, this is a heat wave that you need to take seriously, that's for sure. and julian, let's take a look at your high temperatures for today. 110. that is brutal in livermore. that's a new record for today. 100 in san rafael. also a new record for today. both of the previous records were set back in 2001. 107 concord, fairfield. you'll notice even 90s around places like fremont, redwood city. it was 78 in the city, 83 in oakland, 101 in san jose and

68 in half moon bay. still a scorcher inland areas are in the triple digits right now. inland areas under that excessive heat warning that was extended until 11 p.m. next wednesday. the bay shoreline, under a heat advisory. also until next wednesday, the risk of heat illnesses will remain. so tonight, if you are stepping out, you're not going to get relief inland. it's still going to be in the 90s and one hundreds at 7:00 by 10 p.m, those temperatures are still well above average for this time of year. we head into the morning hours and you're in the 50s to 80s range quickly heating up. tomorrow afternoon we'll see some more triple digits. now that red flag warning that was going for the hills has also been extended until 9 p.m. saturday. and that's because, critically, dry fuels are combining with gusty winds and low humidity, keeping our fire danger elevated. i'll be back with the 4th of july fireworks forecast coming right up ama. >> all right, we'll check back. thank you. sandhya p-g-and-e's busy because of the heat wave

and has called in extra resources. the biggest power outage in the bay area right now affects nearly 2000 customers in the north bay, near the charles schulz-sonoma county airport. that's the orange square that you're seeing on the map. a planned public safety power shut off as the company calls them, turned off electricity to about 17 customers in far northern sonoma county. that's the purple triangle you're seeing, p-g-and-e's is considering a psps for the central coast because of fire danger. it says. so far, the power grid is holding up. >> if i look at the load forecast, the system load forecast on the p-g-and-e's grid is 22,106gw, which is a big number. to put things in context, our all time system peak number was 22,684mw, and that took place on september 6th of 2022. >> crews already inspected numerous substations and transmission lines to make sure they could handle the heat, and there wouldn't be any disruptions. >> we have a positive update from lake county, where cal fire

has constructed control lines completely around a wildfire that ignited in the past two hours, we're told the adams fire began as a structure fire on main street near highway 29, in lower lake. the flames quickly spread to vegetation, burning approximately 15 acres. the fire is now 15% contained, and cal fire says crews are conducting heavy mop up operations. you see some of the smoke in the video here. firefighters will remain on scene overnight. all evacuation orders have been lifted, which is some good news there. a rapidly growing wildfire in butte county has forced thousands of people to evacuate, and it's already destroyed homes and injured firefighters there. it's being called the thompson fire. governor newsom has declared a state of emergency. the fire is burning near oroville. abc7 news reporter j.r stone is here now and j.r. the state is telling us they are using every available tool to knock this fire down. >> well, they certainly are, julian. i was told by cal fire that 12,000 structures could be

in danger here. there are more than a thousand firefighters fighting these flames. the fire acreage have also increased here. more than 3500 acres have burned in cal fire confirms to me that at least seven firefighters have been injured fighting this fire. flames tearing apart structures near oroville in butte county. vehicles burned there, as well as the thompson fire, continues to increase in size. >> kind of a roller coaster of emotions, you know, like like, but i've tried to keep it, you know, a good a good outlook on everything because, you know, what are you going to do? >> about 28,000 people have been affected by some sort of evacuation order. a viewer sent us this video showing the hillside burning all around the iconic o, which stands for oroville. evacuees have been able to take some of their animals, but have had to leave others behind. >> her friend didn't follow us. her best friend is a lamb and the lamb. had she didn't see us

leave and i couldn't, i had to go. so i left the gate open so the lamb could get out and she misses her friend. she keeps crying for her friend. >> caitlin brewer is under an evacuee warning and went with her parents to their friend's house last night. busy to say the least. >> i live with my parents, my sister, niece, brother and me so that's a good load right there. and then we have dog, two cats, and then we moved on to our friend's house, who also had about five people there, some who live in oroville say their focus is solely on the dam. >> one thing that did kind of concern me, that i was assured isn't a problem is the dam, failing because of some things burning? >> i asked those with cal fire about that dam. >> there's always concern, right? when, there's fire in the area of some critical infrastructure, crews are aware of that. we're aware of it. we're aware of the problems that

this information every year in something called red books. while the number of fires in california has stayed relatively consistent, the number of acres burned has changed dramatically. 2022 is the most recent data available. an analysis of the five year averages of acres burned show the increase in recent years. we're now averaging about 2 million acres burned every year. >> some bay area cities are ditching the traditional 4th of july fireworks displays and will instead dazzle the sky with drone shows. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn explains the reasons behind the change and what people can expect. >> across the bay, people will celebrate the nation's birthday with lots of booms and spectacular fireworks in the sky. everyone has a favorite the big ones, the big red ones. >> you see the american flag in them, like the sparkling. >> i like the way they look, you know, like it's beautiful. >> i don't know the sparklers, the lights at an old shipyard,

pyro spectacular. >> crews are getting ready for several big shows. >> the shells, though, that ultimately make the big flowers in the sky. they get dropped into the bottom of those tubes. >> they expect to wow viewers for the 4th of july in san francisco. >> it's a mirrored display, meaning we have two very large fireworks shows taking place exactly at the same time, doing exactly the same thing to the same music. one will be at pier 39, another will be down by aquatic park. this year we received a lot of new fireworks as an alternative to july 4th fireworks displays. >> more cities are turning to drone light shows, drone light shows are pretty special, featuring all sorts of shapes and images. >> it's like, you know, american landmarks, like statue of liberty, or, you know, the mount rushmore. >> at alameda county fairgrounds, visitors have seen the drone shows already this 4th of july. sky elements will host them in several locations, including san pablo, napa and mare island.

morning. officers found a suspicious item near ritter park drive and fox lane. they investigated the details and ultimately decided to detonate

the item. this afternoon. as jpd says, it was rendered safe. authorities closed off the road to further investigate there. one man is under arrest after the san francisco sheriff's office says he shot at deputies serving an eviction notice. it all happened at an apartment building near 14th street and buena vista terrace around 1045 this morning. we're told the suspect shot multiple times through a door, but thankfully no one was hit. people inside of the building were evacuated. the suspect was taken into custody about three hours later and then taken to the hospital. >> right now to a story that's only on abc seven news. 13 senior citizens reportedly being attacked and robbed in just one week in an oakland community. >> and that's just the number of victims who reported attacks to police. now these elders are saying enough is enough. >> abc seven news anchor dion lim joins us live with the latest on this investigation. >> dion, ama and julian, you know, i've covered a lot of crime in recent years, but even this was shocking to me. residents of this community say there could be as many as 30

victims. oakland police say there is no sign the victims are being targeted because of their race. but this is a majority asian american community, so now they are banding together and speaking out in order to stay safe. >> i was just horrified. >> there is no shortage of terrifying stories from residents of a senior living facility who have been attacked in recent days. >> it was happening every hour on the hour. >> sister marie taylor is president of the westlake christian terrace resident council. she says she's counted nearly 30 violent attacks and robberies on elderly asian residents in a span of less than a week, police say about a dozen victims have reported the crimes. >> not only do you just grab their purse, but then you beat them brutally. we have several that were had to be taken to the emergency. one broke their wrist. we had police on saturday, almost seven hours uh- filing reports. residents filing reports, and then it continued

on sunday with more multiple residents being attacked. >> this block of 28th street, north of lake merritt, is home to more than 700 elders, with an average age of 85. many walk along nearby valdez to get to the grocery store and run errands. >> one of the victims on saturday is an alzheimer lady, so she couldn't even quite remember what happened. >> these crimes are why more than 50 residents gathered on wednesday to show support for one another and to tell the city enough is enough. >> this is serious and needs to be addressed most aggressively. >> oakland police tell me they've made several key arrests in these cases, thanks in part to residents reporting the crimes. however, they encourage even more people to come forward, and that's really what made a difference. >> on monday, i set my special resource section out by crime reduction teams and my community resource officers to go out and do operations. i haven't had any robberies in two days for that area, which is huge. >> while residents here say

they're encouraged by the recent contact with oakland police, they are still afraid. caregiver katie pang says she was helping residents on sunday when she was groped, beaten and robbed me very scared, very upset every time. >> low sleeping scare but not afraid to be allies for each other in the fight to stay safe. >> we are here. we are paying taxes, we vote and we need to be recognized. >> they are making their voices heard. now, oakland police say there was a spike in robberies citywide, with 83 between june 25th and july 1st, though there is no particular reason for the timing of the surge. they are urging these elders to walk in larger groups and to do so only during the daytime. you just have to feel for this community because they work hard. they just want to go about their day and this is the last thing they expect to happen like anyone else. >> come on. all right. thanks dion. appreciate it. >> all right. let's turn our attention to the forecast right now. continuing to look at these

really hot temperatures even here at 616 in the evening i know. >> are we breaking more records, sandhya. we are indeed. >> we have two more records to tell you about ama and julian right now. let's take a look at a live picture and then we'll talk records. the beach sure looks attractive. santa cruz people are escaping the heat and enjoying the water. they're staying cool. the two records to tell you about san rafael. 100 degrees livermore 110. if you missed the high temperatures at the top of the show, got up to 107. in concord, san jose, 101 degrees. here's a view from san jose, where it is sunny and warm in the san jose area right now. santa rosa 88. it is 84, in petaluma. triple digits still fairfield, concord, livermore and from our sutro tower camera seeing hazy skies overhead. 73 in the city. it is 82. in oakland, 90 from hayward, san jose to redwood city. half moon bay, 66 degrees. all right. there are some tips that i do want to pass along to you. i know we've talked about it, but

this is a prolonged heat wave. and so we do want to remind people as we head into next week, this heat wave continues. drink plenty of water. if you can. wear lightweight clothing, take breaks in the shade or ac if you can find it. a library, a movie theater, a restaurant, no signs of heat, illnesses and never leave people or pets inside vehicles. you know it can get a lot hotter inside the car and it's very dangerous. high pressure is bringing this heat wave. it's right overhead now. the latest models are holding it. it's not going to move right away. and so that's why this heat wave is going to continue for days on end. now i do want to show you a little sign of encouragement. there is some fog that was off the monterey coast. it is starting to come up the coastline at this point. and we're starting to see the effects of it a little bit. 21 mile an hour winds uh- sea breeze in san francisco, dropping your temperature to five degrees. so a little bit cooler tonight. at least 13 degrees cooler right now in santa rosa. golden gate bridge camera showing you the sunshine are dangerous. heat wave continues into next week. red flag warning next several days

and 4th of july. forecast is looking spectacular. clear skies for most of you. there will be a few patches of fog near the coast in places like half moon bay, as we look at the forecast. santa rosa, 71 degrees livermore. you're going to be warm. 85 in the 60s from san francisco to oakland, 70 for redwood city and san jose going hour by hour tonight. 7:00 still going to be pretty hot inland. 90s and 100 slow cooling inland. but along the coastline in the 60s as we go towards tomorrow morning, notice the drop off in the temperatures. it's still going to be warm inland, quickly warming up into the one hundreds again by the early afternoon, but at least near the coast, we still have that marine influence to keep your temperatures in check. coastal flood advisory due to astronomical high tides until 5 a.m. friday. that was extended as well. some low lying flooding not out of the question. your morning temperatures, 50s to 80s to start off the day and then in the afternoon. i don't think it's going to be quite as hot

time soon? abc seven news reporter anser hassan takes a look. summer is always hot, but experts say there's something important to understand about what's different about this current heat wave hitting the bay area. >> temperatures that you're about to experience. this week and maybe next week in california, would have been made virtually impossible without human induced climate change. >> shel winkley is a meteorologist and the weather and climate engagement specialist at climate central, a nonprofit that studies climate science. he says july is always the hottest month of the year in the bay area, but the intensity and the duration of these heat events are signs of climate change. >> i think the excessive length of this is the biggest teller, right? you can have a heat wave where maybe it's 1 or 2 days. but when it lasts for weeks on end, that's not that's not normal. that's abnormal. >> the national weather service issued a dire warning. it calls this current heat wave an exceptionally dangerous situation, going on to say,

quote, an event of this scale, magnitude and longevity will likely rival anything we've seen in the last 18 years. >> it's just barely hot events that we used to have 30 years ago will start to feel like, it's actually a little bit more than just a bit hot. it's actually a heat wave, right? >> the science suggests that the world is warming faster than at any other point in recorded history. greenhouse gas emissions, such as from the bay area's many refineries, trap in the sun's heat and are one of the leading causes of global warming and climate change. the hot temperatures pose big risks to human health and increases the risk of wildfires, but it will also impact infrastructure. >> we see buckling of roads, you see potholes in the wintertime, especially when you do these rapid shifts back and forth between hot and cold, winkley says. >> consumers can do their part by recycling and using renewable energy, and try to plant native plants to fight off co2 emissions in the east bay. anser hassan abc seven news.

her murder. district attorney brooke jenkins says 49 year old trevor belmont intentionally killed 74 year old cortizone dan dan by pushing her in the path of an oncoming train at the powell street bart station monday night. dan dan's family tells us she was heading home from her night shift as a telephone operator at the marriott in union square. belmont is due in court on friday. >> in san francisco's west portal neighborhood, the community is responding after

the district attorney announced charges against the driver who crashed and killed a family of four earlier this year. >> and now we're learning what they found in that investigation. abc seven news reporter luz pena was in the neighborhood. she has the latest. >> still shaken by the horrific crash that ended the lives of a family of four outside this library, many in the west portal community are still grieving, something that's etched into this neighborhood and the community. just three months after the crash. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins announced felony charges against the 78 year old driver that plowed into the family. these are felony vehicular manslaughter charges, which is the result of the gross negligence that occurred in causing this collision. after months of investigating, sfpd ruled out mechanical failure in this case. investigators believe the woman was driving anywhere between 65 to 72mph before crashing against the bus shelter. that was right here, where the family was waiting right after the accident. sfmta

and city officials proposed changes to the street. community members rallied against those changes, worried it would negatively impact local businesses. the da's findings now confirming what many in this community have been saying, going at the very high speed on the wrong side of the street. >> there's nothing, nothing you can do about it. the cause was not how we operate here, but it was driver error and that has now been confirmed by the da. >> the supervisor for this district said traffic changes are still needed. the community is now working with the city to develop those changes. >> we do have to change the way that we use that intersection. we have been working with the merchants to come up with something that everyone can live with, and i think we're there. >> as for the driver, she was arrested on tuesday and released wednesday on a $150,000 bail. in a statement, her attorney said in part she continues to mourn while she learns to live with this unspeakable reality and

added, we will review the evidence and take it one step at a time in presenting her defense. residents here view the charges as the beginning of justice for this family. >> what breaks my heart is the loss. i'm glad that they were able to hold people accountable in san francisco, luz pena, abc seven news. >> now to a seven on your side story uncovering the danger under too many dashboards, more than 6 million vehicles are still operating in the united states with dangerous recall to airbags. that's according to carfax. abc seven news i-team reporter melanie woodrow explains where some cars with recalls are still for sale. >> millions of vehicles travel across the bay area every day, and a percentage of them have recalled takata airbags. the national highway traffic safety administration has called it the largest and most complex safety recall in u.s. history. still, despite the nearly ten year old recall, millions of people are still at risk. patrick olson is editor in chief of carfax. >> there are more than 700,000

literal time bombs waiting in california for someone to get, and that's why we need to get these airbags out of these cars. >> our abc seven news data analyst standardized the data to account for the number of registered vehicles per state in california, there are 2046 unfixed takata airbags per 100,000 registered vehicles, putting california somewhere in the middle. when it comes to states with the most unfixed takata airbags per 100,000 registered vehicles, the issue is the chemicals inside the inflator. >> normally, when your car gets hit, they combine and explode and fill the airbag, which protects the passenger protects the driver. these airbags, though, when exposed over time to heat and humidity, develop moisture in those chemicals and that creates an explosion that far exceeds what everyone intended. that can turn the metal band around. the airbag into shrapnel, literally flying pieces of metal that go into the cabin of a car. >> while existing laws prohibit car dealers from selling a new car with an unfixed recall and prohibit rental companies from

renting a car with an unfixed recall. there is no existing law for used car sellers. >> congress has not acted to enact that. >> searching the web, i found a used car for sale in the bay area with an open recall for takata airbags. >> there's a recall on this car. >> this used car lot owner told me he didn't know before taking the car in question off the business's website, where it had been listed for sale, even though he wasn't doing anything wrong by selling it. did you know it had a recall on it? >> a lot of car had recall. >> nhtsa tells abc seven news it does not have authority to require used car dealerships to disclose an open recall to a buyer or potential buyer. the federal trade commission tells abc seven news. the used car rule does not have a requirement that open recalls be disclosed, but it does require that dealers attach a buyer's guide to the vehicle, which includes information about where consumers can search for open recalls on a vehicle. >> that's why it's important to look at your vehicle history report, get a mechanic to check out a car before you buy it to make sure you understand everything that could be wrong with it.

>> in march, three u.s. senators introduced the used car safety recall repair act, which, if passed, would require car dealers to repair any outstanding safety recalls in used cars prior to selling. leasing or loaning them to consumers. california congressman mark desaulnier is on the house committee on transportation and infrastructure. >> clearly, the senators bringing this up is appropriate that we need to really look at this. it's shocking to me. the numbers, and clearly there has to be something done. >> in the meantime, you can check the vin number of any vehicle you're purchasing on nhtsa's website to see whether or not there are any open recalls. nhtsa says 27 people in the united states have been killed by takata airbags, and at least 400 have been injured for seven. on your side melanie woodrow, abc seven news. >> we have an update now from the abc seven news i-team on a story we've covered for five years. today, a court made a major decision in the case of two bay area men convicted of killing a plainclothes police officer in rome. an italian appeals court upheld the convictions of finnegan elder

pm show getting answers. abc seven news anchor dion limb spoke with paul mitchell, who's the vice president of political data inc. she asked him what the president needs to do going forward. >> we know that he needs to quote unquote, perform well. we've heard that terminology be used not only with his upcoming campaign stops, but also in his appearance on abc with george stephanopoulos in a couple of days. so with that being said, what does it mean for him to perform well at this point? >> well, perform well was really the goal of the debate. it was supposed to be that after the state of the union that this debate was going to put the nail in the coffin of anybody who was thinking that joe biden wasn't ready to perform, it was joe joe biden's own words, the president's own words of watch me uh- to people who questioned his ability to, serve as president and serve as the candidate on the democratic ticket. now, what it means for reform going forward, i think it would require a lot of extemporaneous, you know, at the microphone for an hour at a

out on patrol looking for speeding, distracted and dangerous drivers. maximum enforcement runs through sunday night. >> vets say every year july fourth celebrations lead to a 60% surge in lost pets. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes explains that just having a microchip isn't always enough. >> new pets of all ages are coming into the city of san jose animal care center every day. >> we are bursting at the seams and we've put out pleas before, but we have no more space and animals keep coming in and many of those animals are coming in under circumstances that could have been avoided. >> that's why staff at the center are urging everyone to take special care of their pets. this 4th of july, as fireworks are expected to blast throughout the day and beyond. >> they don't understand where these loud noises are coming from, so to them, it's just lou, thunderous booms, which can be terrifying for them.

sandia we're going to see triple digits again inland. >> but the good news is it's not going to be quite as hot near the coast. so almond julian, let's take a look at a live picture right now from our emeryville camera. notice that haze in the air? yeah, our air quality has been suffering. some areas are in the moderate to poor category, poor up towards winter's area near winters. i should say. so part of it is the high pressure putting a lid on the atmosphere. the heat. we've got the smog and then you have smoke from the northern california wildfires. so that spare the air alert remains up to day tomorrow. we're looking at moderate air quality and then friday good to moderate looking at live doppler seven things are quiet but the fog is making its way up towards the pescadero coast. now from the monterey bay. so temperatures along the coast 68 in half moon bay. but you get inland and you're going to be in the triple digits once again. so it's going to be hot there. friday. you will notice those triple digits continue a little bump up in those numbers. and saturday is when the heat comes into about 108 degrees is what we're looking at sunday.
