july week. that feels hotter than ever. more bay area cities are breaking daily records, many local parks are closed, and some towns are rethinking their independence day parades. these are just some of the extreme effects of this holiday heat wave. good evening. thanks for being here. i'm julian glover and i'm ama daetz with this heat. >> we want to keep you cool and prepared. now, the qr code that we are going to put on the

bottom right of your screen tonight will lead you to some very helpful resources. >> be sure to check that out when it gets there. the heat has been brutal though, and we're only a couple of days into this steamy stretch of weather. now with those relentless temperatures, san jose is now recording its first heat related death during this stretch. the first we've heard of here in the bay area. we'll have more on that in just a minute. >> the city of antioch is canceling its 4th of july parade tomorrow. it's usually held right in the middle of the day. in today's high was 109. >> wow. and other bay area cities broke daily record temperatures, too. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is looking at that. and the heat that is still ahead. sandhya. >> yeah, julian and ama this summer. swelter did set records. let me show them to you right now. 110 degrees today in livermore. 100 in san rafael. both new records for today, but it was pretty hot even in concord. 107 105. in santa rosa, 101 degrees in san jose. we have that excessive heat warning for inland areas and the bay shoreline under a heat advisory.

both got extended until 11 p.m. next wednesday as the risk of heat related illnesses will remain elevated tomorrow. temperatures are going to dial back a little bit, but we're still going to be in the triple digits inland. mid one hundreds. there you will notice 60s right along the coastline a lot like today. and as we take a look at our heat risk, inland areas will be in the major to extreme heat risk. so definitely take it easy. stay hydrated and find a way to beat the heat. we also have a red flag warning that it got extended until 9 p.m. saturday night. the concern here is critically dry fuels. we've got gusty winds, not terribly strong, but you combine that with the low humidity and that fire danger will remain elevated in our hills. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast, which includes the fireworks viewing coming right up, julian ama. >> all right, sandhya, thank you. the heat is punishing for anyone without access to shelter or effective ways to cool down. >> and tonight, that danger has turned deadly in san jose. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez is finding out

more about this new heat related death. >> i've got water here and i'm freezing the otter pops. they're not frozen yet. they're working on it for tomorrow. >> sean cartwright, a longtime homeless advocate, says she's trying to keep unhoused people alive during this extreme heat. >> everyone's like, hey, how are you doing, kid? >> because people just want to be able to wash off. >> we spoke with cartwright hours after learning san jose mayor matt mehan announced a homeless individual died from heat exhaustion on tuesday evening. >> completely expected. and i'm sure that there's going to be many more. i mean, there's a war on unhoused people here in san jose and santa clara county. >> mehan said his office learned about the news from the medical examiner. >> i feel responsibility for that as mayor. you know, i want everybody in our community to be safe. and i, you know, while it's, you know, not not all deaths are preventable. this one was while the mayor points to doubling the amount of quick build, safe sleeping and safe parking sites, cartwright feels you can't force people into

shelters or tents as far as immediate response, mehan said city staff are handing out bottled water to the homeless. >> cartwright is handing out sugar free electrolyte packets and cooling towels. >> we're really just trying to revive people and revive a little bit of their soul in the middle of this misery. >> the city of san jose has three cooling centers open. homeless advocates say it's inadequate since they close around nine at night. >> they're meant to be open throughout the day, when temperatures are the highest and put people most at risk, cartwright says. >> everybody needs to take part in this life saving effort. >> what we really need to do is keep a cooler in your car right now with cold ice, with ice water, and if you see somebody out there, give it to them. give them 2 or 3 at a time. we're literally trying to keep people alive in san jose. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> a man in his mid 20s is missing after being last seen swimming off the villa grande beach in monterey, so it's possible he drowned in the russian river just after 6 p.m. several divers and rescuers on

jet skis tried to locate him. no luck. the last effort tonight was a boat with sonar to check the river bottom. this comes as a warning. this summer to be careful in the water. >> the main thing is don't get in water over your head if you can't swim, make sure you know what you're doing when you get in the water. keep your head about you. watch what's going on. watch for snags, but mainly have flotation device on. >> now the search is off after dark for the safety of their rescue crew. but tomorrow morning they will be back to the same area with the dive team. >> p-g-and-e's is busy because of the heat wave, and he's called in extra resources to respond to power outages. there are sporadic outages throughout the bay area. there was a public safety power shut off for the northern part of sonoma county, but the power was turned back on about an hour ago today. the utility gave us a rundown of what else they're doing as we navigate this heat wave. >> we've inspected all of our critical substations to ensure all equipment is operating properly and no apparent issues.

we have flown uh- helicopters 50 transmission lines just to proactively patrol to make sure that we don't see any evidence of any type of uh- uh- tree or anything that could come in contact with our lines and disrupt service. >> there is a possibility for a public safety power shut off for counties in the central coast because of fire danger there, p-g-and-e's says. energy usage is nearing a single day record that was set back in september of 2022. >> we moved to the east bay, where for some, the 3rd of july is when the holiday celebrations begin. reserving those spots early for tomorrow's fireworks show is serious business tonight, abc seven news reporter tim johns went out to see how people are braving the heat and getting ready for the fourth. >> reporter along the streets of alameda. preparations for the 4th of july can be seen everywhere. on thursday, the city will host its annual parade, which bills itself as being one of the longest in the nation. it's a big deal.

>> yeah, we love it. we've been here about 20 years and try to make it every single year. >> ahead of thursday's parade, david creekmore and his daughter rowan came to claim their spot for the big day. one of dozens of people who set up chairs along the parade route trying to capture the best view. >> and people tend to do it earlier and earlier because the parade is so popular that you want to carve out your spot and get a good get a good spot for the parade. >> further north, the city of richmond held its official 4th of july fireworks event, one of the few places that has its celebration ahead of the actual holiday. >> i do like it because i have. i happen to think that new year's eve and the 4th of july is like amateur night. today is when the professionals come out happening right along the water. >> many here tell us the fireworks display was a good way to not only bring in the holiday, but also get away from the rising temperatures. >> this is nice. >> lori hart says. she's been coming every year for, well over a decade. she says while she prefers the heat over the cold, she needed a break from the current heat wave. >> it's i know it's going to get a little bit chillier, but i

governors rallied to his defense after a private meeting at the white house came together tonight to listen to president biden tell us in his own words what his plans were. >> i'm here to tell you today, president joe biden is in it to win it. >> despite the positive tone, according to abc news sources, in that meeting, at least one governor told the president they did not think he was up to the task of crossing the finish line in the campaign. tonight, we have more on what our own governor is saying and what it could all mean for the bay area native, vice president kamala harris. nearly a week after the first presidential debate of the 2024 election. >> he's the worst president in the history of our country. >> what are you talking about? you have the morals of an alley cat. >> president joe biden can't seem to live his debate performance down. >> is president biden considering stepping down? >> absolutely. absolutely not. >> for the second day in a row, the white house held a briefing to explain biden's debate performance and dispel claims

that the president is contemplating quitting the race. the white house spokesperson says that biden was jet lagged and had a cold on debate night. >> it was a bad night. >> we understand that. it was a bad night, and the president has spoken to this, and he understands that since then, a growing number of politicians, both democrats and republicans, have called for him to step aside. >> i think everyone can see the objective fact that we have been discussing here for a long, long time that president biden is not up to the job. >> on wednesday, the president and the vice president met with democratic governors. the campaign saying they were seeking advice and expertise. after the meeting, maryland's wes moore spoke on behalf of the governors with a clear message. they're standing with biden. >> the president is our nominee, the president is our party leader, and the president has told us, and he was very clear back there that he is in this to win this.

>> california governor gavin newsom was also in attendance. he posted on social media afterwards. i heard three words from the president. he's all in and so am i. joe biden's had our back. now it's time to have his. meanwhile, some other democrats and new polls also speculating if this accelerates vp kamala harris's future plans. >> i think she's a talented woman and someone who should be in the mix. but this is not a matter of just passing the mantle to her. >> experts tell abc seven news that to dispel all of these questions, biden's next goal needs to be reassuring the public what it means for reform. >> going forward. >> i think it would require a lot of extemporaneous, you know, at the microphone for an hour, at a press conference, taking questions from reporters. >> and announced just yesterday, abc seven, abc news anchor george stephanopoulos will sit down with president biden for the exclusive first tv interview. since that debate. you can watch the 30 minute

we be near you this week on good morning america? good morning america, good morning america. >> the ash you see the ash fall. then the smoke started coming in. the sun was being blared out. you know, and that's when you see neighbors just panicking and trying to get out. and that's when it hit me like, this is real. i got to leave. >> happening now. thousands of people have evacuated tonight because of a wildfire burning near oroville. the thompson fire has burned more than 3500 acres. firefighters have made some progress. containment is up to 7. the fire is right near lake oroville and has wiped out several buildings. although cal fire has yet to determine the exact number. there have been injuries, including several firefighters who were hurt in a crash this morning. some people got out just in time as the flames closed in. this is the closest that it's been and we had giant embers dropping on the driveway and i said, okay, we got to go. >> i can't, i can't do this. >> governor newsom did declare a state of emergency, which led to attorney general rob bonta also

issuing a warning over price gouging. state law makes it illegal to jack up prices on things like food and gasoline in an emergency, a $10 billion climate bond is going to be on the california ballot this november. >> today was the last day for lawmakers to approve the measure. to put it before voters, it would help improve the water supply, prepare for wildfires and protect the coast from rising sea levels. the rush to finish business before the holiday break was slowed when a group of pro-palestinian protesters came into the chamber and shouted down lawmakers for the first time in the state's history, california is set to impose permanent water restrictions on cities and towns, according to the chronicle. the state water board approved the policy today. urban water suppliers will have to reduce the amount of water they provide over the next 15 years. these reductions will be tailored to each community and their demand. bay area suppliers will likely see less dramatic cuts, because water use in the region has historically been low. from drought to fires. our

abc seven originals documentary, bay area 2050 looks at the impact climate change will have on our environment over the next few decades. bay area 2050 is now streaming everywhere you watch abc7 on the peninsula. >> the famed flintstone house in hillsborough is opening to the public for the first time. it is the location for a fine dining pop up experience starting next week. stone age omakase opened up reservations tonight, but they sold out within minutes. the experience includes a tour of the house and a 15 course tasting menu. better be hungry. stone age omakase opens on july 12th. the flintstone house is privately owned by a former publishing executive, who says she only uses it for entertaining. >> wow. okay. >> well, bay area cities are gearing up for their 4th of july celebrations tomorrow. crews are setting up in san francisco for the usual fireworks at pier 39 at aquatic park. but this independence day, drones will be lighting up the sky for several celebrations, including san

pablo, napa and mare island. >> journal entries are pretty special. we're not in the business of replacing fireworks by any means. we like to call ourselves an alternative. >> supporters say drones are safer during the fire season and more environmentally friendly. plus, it minimizes those noise disturbances and also cuts down on litter too. >> we had the rainbow lasers for san francisco pride and they are not done lighting up the night sky except now it's red, white and blue. illuminate is keeping up the lasers this week. you may have seen them testing out their new display last night for this exhibit. they're sending some vertical stripes into the sky from the embarcadero. the magic is on from tonight until sunday, 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. very cool. yes. and about now, it's the only time you really want to get outside. >> yeah, it's not cool outside right now. we can tell you that abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the forecast and so many records broken today. sandy. yeah, we had two more records today in livermore and san rafael, julian and ama, as we take a look at a

live picture right now from our mount tam cam, it is certainly shaping up to be a glorious one in time for the fireworks shows tomorrow night. >> so at 930, you will notice that pretty much everyone clear right near the coast, though we're going to have a few patches of fog around, but this really should not impact any of the fireworks shows. it is going to be nice. 70 in santa rosa, livermore, 84 degrees. it will be in the 60s from san francisco to oakland, 74 redwood city and 78 in san jose. of course, earlier in the day we're going to deal with the heat wave once again inland areas are going to be in the triple digits. so into next week that heat wave continues. these are just some safety reminders. drink plenty of fluids. wear lightweight clothing. takes some breaks in the shade, or find ac. whether it's a restaurant, a library, no signs of heat, illnesses, movie theaters never leave people or pets inside cars. it gets a lot hotter inside the vehicle. and of course, this looks really inviting. this is the beach in santa cruz. in case you're going to the coast. sunny and mild to warm weather, but the uv index

will be very high, so make sure you lather on the sunscreen. 82 in santa cruz, ocean beach, 76 degrees. stinson will be at 74 high pressure bringing us that weather. this is the ridge of high pressure that's pretty much locked in here. and it's going to provide us with days of this heat wave continuing. here's a look at the temperatures now, anywhere from the 60s to the 80s. you get out towards brentwood and you've got 91 right now. so still retaining that heat from earlier in the day. but i know this doesn't seem really realistic, but it is. it's running cooler by seven degrees. oakland nine degrees concord. you may not be feeling it, but temperatures are down from our san jose camera. clear skies, dangerous heat wave continues into next week. red flag warning the next several days and for the 4th of july, it's going to be spectacular for the fireworks. sometimes it's touch and go with the fog, as you know, many times. all right. tomorrow morning there will be a couple of patches of fog along the coastline 50s coast side, 80s inland, quickly warming up

around noontime away from the beaches into the 90s and by the early afternoon we are talking about triple digits inland. a coastal flood advisory remains up until 5 a.m. friday. astronomical high tides are going to lead to the potential for some minor low lying flooding, so keep that in mind that is extended as well into friday morning. your temperatures tomorrow morning. 50s at the beaches 80s inland tomorrow afternoon in the south bay. here's how it's going to look 98 in san jose, 103 degrees in morgan hill, 96 on the peninsula and redwood city 68. half moon bay, downtown san francisco, 80 degrees in the north bay. you're looking at 100 in santa rosa, sonoma 97 in san rafael in the east bay, 87 oakland in 90. in hayward had inland 104 in concord and livermore and 105 in brentwood. accuweather seven day forecast sizzling for the 4th of july. the heat wave continues beyond that for the holiday week into the weekend, you will notice dangerous heat still extreme. and then early next week, low
