america, this morning. >> good morning, everyone, and happy 4th of july. i'm andrea fujii in for rhiannon and i am andrew dymburt. >> we begin with the record breaking weather conditions for this holiday. extreme heat impacting a large section of the country. temperatures near 120 degrees in some areas. >> and the big story overnight hurricane beryl slamming jamaica. extensive damage reported amid fears of a rising death toll in the caribbean this morning. hurricane warnings issued for the cayman islands and mexico's yucatan peninsula as beryl barrels. northwest oil companies like bp and shell are now evacuating some workers from rigs in the gulf. beryl, brushed by jamaica as a category four, winds up to 140 miles an hour. tourists riding out the storm. >> we went to the airport just to make sure and every counter, just like they told us, they said, hey, every flight is full, you can't get off this island.

>> jamaica's prime minister warned overnight. the island has not seen the worst of beryl's impact. up to nine feet of storm surge was expected, with flooding and mudslides. abc's faith abubey is in montego bay. >> people who were in low lying areas, flood prone areas. some of them had to be evacuated. the winds came in strong and intensified throughout the day. you can still see some of the effects, the outer bands of beryl still impacting us here in montego bay. >> beryl has claimed at least seven lives in the caribbean. satellite images show the island of carriacou in grenada before the storm, and after. aid workers are racing to bring food to union island, where 90% of the homes were leveled. beryl could impact texas next week, possibly as a category one hurricane. meanwhile, the west coast is facing one of the longest heat waves in 18 years. people from arizona to the san francisco bay area to oregon could see record high temps. california's death valley could hit 130, which would set a

record for the hottest temperature ever recorded on earth. hot and windy conditions are fueling this wildfire in northern california, forcing 26,000 people to evacuate, prompting the governor to declare an emergency at least three deaths are now blamed on the heat wave, including a girl left inside a truck in houston. we'll check your forecast in just a few moments. >> the other big story this morning new pressure on president biden to step aside after last week's debate performance. new polls show him falling further behind president trump and now a top donor is urging biden to call it quits. but last night, a group of democratic governors met at the white house, most of them pledging support for the president. abc's christiane cordero has the very latest. christiane. good morning, andre. >> good morning. the president says he had a medical checkup after the debate. and despite growing pressure to quit, he's vowing to stay in the race. reporter this morning, president biden is rejecting growing pressure from democrats to step aside after his debate

performance last week. >> the conversation was honest and open last night, biden met with more than 20 democratic governors. >> the meeting described as candid and blunt. biden revealed that he had a medical checkup after the debate, showing him in good health. >> all of us said we pledged our support to him because the stakes could not be higher. >> california governor gavin newsom writing i heard three words from the president he's all in and so am i. but one person at the governor's meeting said the president did not go one by one, asking each governor for support with the covid. >> excuse me, with, dealing with everything we have to do with, look, if we medicare. >> a new poll shows trump extending his lead over biden now ahead by six points, a three point gain since the debate. another poll finds 80% of likely voters think biden is too old to run for reelection. two democratic lawmakers have now publicly called on him to drop

out, including congressman lloyd doggett of texas and arizona congressman raul grijalva, who says if he's the candidate, i'm going to support him. but i think that this is an opportunity to look elsewhere. massachusetts congressman seth moulton says democrats should consider all viable options. and now, new financial pressure on biden. reed hastings, the co-founder of netflix and a democratic mega donor, is now calling on biden to exit the race to allow a vigorous democratic leader to beat trump. >> the president is clear eyed and he is staying in the race. >> the white house had blamed biden's performance on a cold and on jet lag. in a new interview, the president told a wisconsin radio host he made a mistake. >> i had a bad night and the fact of the matter is that, you know, it was i screwed up. i made a mistake. that's 90 minutes on stage. look at what i've done in 3.5 years. >> according to sources, the president has privately acknowledged the next few days will be critical for him. he previously told one ally that he

still views himself as the best candidate to defeat trump. but he's keeping, quote, an open mind about the path forward. it comes as the daily beast obtains new video of former president trump playing golf, where he claims that biden is quitting and bashes vice president kamala harris. >> she's so bad. he's so pathetic. it's so amazing. it's just so bad. >> a spokesperson for harris responded, saying, no, donald, what is bad is taking away women's rights. what is bad is losing an election and encouraging a violent mob to attack the capitol. senator chris, one of the president's closest allies, says he advised the president to do more unscripted, open ended events to restore confidence. andrew. >> christiane. thank you. president biden's first post-debate tv interview is tomorrow with our george stephanopoulos. it airs tomorrow night at eight eastern, right here on abc. >> overseas, israel says it killed a top commander of the militant group hezbollah. officials say he was killed in a

drone strike in lebanon. in response, hezbollah launched 100 rockets targeting israeli military positions. israel did not report any injuries. meanwhile, israel has approved what's being called the largest land seizure in the west bank in decades. officials okayed the taking of about five square miles in the jordan valley. >> now to california, where a jury has convicted a man for the gruesome murder of his former high school classmate. a hate crime killing because the classmate was jewish and gay, samuel woodward committed hate crime and first degree murder. this morning, a california jury finding samuel woodward guilty in the hate crime killing of his former high school classmate, blaze bernstein. >> no verdict can bring back blaze. there will never be anyone quite like him. his gifts will never be realized or shared. >> now, back in 2018, bernstein, a 19 year old gay jewish ivy league student, went missing in newport beach. just over a week later, his body was found in a

park he visited with woodward that night. he went missing. he'd been stabbed 28 times. >> we do believe mr. woodward was acting alone. >> the now 26 year old woodward admitted to the killing, but prosecutors argued the murder was punishable as a hate crime, claiming woodward, a member of a group, killed bernstein because he was gay and jewish. but the defense argued the murder was a crime of passion, saying the two men had visited the park for a sexual encounter after meeting online, woodward saying he was worried. bernstein had recorded the meeting and was going to out him as gay. >> did blaze do something that led to a sudden quarrel and a deadly overreaction by sam in the heat of passion. >> but prosecutors argued the murder was premeditated, saying woodward even brought a symbol associated with his group a skull mask, to the killing, which was found with bernstein's blood on it. the jury agreed. and now convicted of a hate crime, woodward faces a sentence

owner. >> well, major merger at the mall, the parent company of saks fifth avenue, is acquiring neiman marcus in a deal worth $2.6 billion. no stores are expected to close, and in a surprise move, amazon will be a minority investor in the new company, providing technology and other services. mortgage rates rose last week for the first time since late may. the 30 year fixed rate mortgage averaged 6.95. analysts still expect rates to slowly drop in the coming months. >> a judge has now weighed in on a controversial idea to ban employee non-compete clauses. supporters of the ban say it would give workers more freedom and boost wages, but critics say otherwise. this morning, a court ruling that could affect workers across the country. a federal judge in texas has temporarily blocked a government ban on non-compete agreements, which was set to take effect in september. supporters of the ban approved by the ftc earlier this year, argue non-compete

contact with infected cattle. human cases have now been confirmed in colorado, texas and michigan. the patient has recovered, and the cdc says the risk to the public remains low. the weight loss drug ozempic and wegovy are being linked to a rare form of blindness, a new study found patients taking those drugs at a higher risk of developing the condition, which is caused by a loss of blood flow to the optic nerve. but scientists say more research is needed to determine if the drugs actually cause the eye condition. the drug's maker says patient safety is a top priority and it's taking the study seriously. >> we turn now to the disturbing new allegations against rapper sean diddy combs, yet another lawsuit. this morning, sean diddy combs faces new sex trafficking allegations in a lawsuit filed yesterday, former star adria english claims she was trapped in a cycle of sex trafficking. she never asked to be a part of because defendant combs knew he could groom her. english says she met combs in

2004 while performing at a new york strip club. she claims he offered her boyfriend a job if she danced at diddy's parties. english claims she was coerced into using alcohol and drugs at those events before being sexually assaulted by various guests. >> we going up, we going live. can't stop, won't stop. torture. this is at least the 10th lawsuit filed against diddy, alleging physical abuse and sex trafficking. >> he has consistently denied any wrongdoing. his ex-girlfriend cassie ventura, has accused him of rape and abuse. his former producer, rodney jones, claims diddy repeatedly sexually assaulted him, and a federal investigation is looking into allegations of human and sex trafficking mounting lawsuits against sean combs just creates more and more civil liability, more money that he might have to pay out if he loses. this latest lawsuit comes as tmz reports diddy is selling his los angeles mansion raided by the fbi earlier this year. the rap mogul, hoping to make a serious profit, reportedly asking $70 million for a home he paid $40 million for back in 2014 with her lawsuit. adria
