>> but doubt still looms just months ahead of the election. >> and it's team nobody asked for. but many may end up enjoying governor gavin newsom. retired nfl star marshawn lynch on a new podcast. >> good morning. welcome to july 4th and happy independence day. >> it's good to start the check of our forecast for june. >> all right. so our heat wave rolls for on another day. we're in store for a hot fourth. and those advisories and warnings have been extended even further into next week. right now temperatures around the bay shoreline. we're in the 60s and 70. good morning, san jose at 70 degrees 65 in oakland. the wider view showing you it is warm inland right now. 74 in brentwood, 70 in fairfield. the mixed bag in the north bay, 50s and 60s for the most part, those heat advisories and excessive heat warnings have now been extended until next wednesday. so this heat wave is long lasting and will end up being at least nine days here, that we have some very hot temperatures. remember underneath a heat advisory and an excessive heat

warning, it's a cumulative effect. day after day of these hot temperatures can really take a toll on your body. so inland today it's another hot one. maybe a one or 2 or 3 degrees cooler than yesterday, but still, 103 or 106 is not a big difference. we'll find temperatures hot again inland in the triple digits around the bay shoreline. it's another warm day. sunny skies, 80s and 90s. look at this. later on this evening we are fog free around the bay shoreline for the fireworks. it's pretty rare to be fog free on the fourth and along the coast will be in the upper 60s to the lower 70s. we'll take a closer look at that fireworks forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> all right. we'll see you then. drew with those relentless temperatures, san jose is now recording its first heat related death. the first we've heard of in the bay area. the city of antioch is canceling its 4th of july parade today because of the weather. it's usually held right in the middle of the day. however, drew says that today it's expected to reach 104 triple digit temperatures and power outages can be a dangerous combination. p-g-and-e's is

standing by with extra resources. and speaking of that, their outage map right now shows neighborhoods without electricity in pockets throughout the bay area. we are not seeing the purple triangles that would signify public safety power shutoffs, p-g-and-e's says. there are no shutoffs scheduled for today. the utility gave us a rundown of what crews are doing to get through this days long heat wave. >> we've inspected all of our critical substations to ensure all equipment is operating properly and no apparent issues. we have flown uh- helicopters 50 transmission lines just to proactively patrol to make sure that we don't see any evidence of any type of, a tree or anything that could come in contact with our lines and disrupt service. >> p-g-and-e's says. energy usage is nearing a single day record set in september of 2022. >> the heat is impacting 4th of july celebrations across the bay area. abc seven news reporter lena howland live in danville and lena. today's parade is

going to go on as planned. >> i hate kumasi good morning to you. and that's right. we are in downtown danville, where their 4th of july parade is getting ready to kick off in just four short hours. and let me tell you, people were so excited for this parade. they came out one day early to set out their lawn chairs and stake out a spot to make sure they have the best possible view for the parade today. but because of the extreme heat expected today, other bay area communities weren't so lucky. the city of antioch, forced to cancel its 4th of july parade with triple digits in the forecast. the antioch parade usually takes place in late morning to early afternoon, when temperatures are expected to be some of the hottest. the city's events for the holiday will now begin tonight at six. that does still include their spectacular fireworks show over the delta at 915. here's mayor lamar hernandez thorpe to have people out at such dangerous temperatures would be foolish of

the city. >> and then i've put out a call for folks to, you know, cancel activities if they're out and about. and we need to practice what we preach. >> and in the north bay, the city of healdsburg also canceled their 4th of july parade. saint helena canceled their fireworks show, and the city of yountville postponed their festival, all because of the extreme heat. now back here live in danville, where their parade is still a go. people are urged to bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a blanket to sit on. as a reminder, this parade starts at 9:00 this morning and is expected to go until about noon. live in danville, lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you lena, and no matter what your plans are, make sure you keep safe on the roads. chp is starting its maximum enforcement period for the 4th of july holiday. that means all available officers are going to be out on patrol looking for speeders, distracted and dangerous drivers. maximum enforcement runs through sunday night, and if you're still

trying to figure out your plans for the fourth, head over to the front page of our website for information on all the fireworks, festivals and county fairs. it's on abc seven news.com or the abc seven news bay area app in san francisco's west portal neighborhood. >> the community is responding after the district attorney announced charges against the driver who hit and killed a family of four. prosecutors say the 78 year old driver was going somewhere between 65 to 72 miles an hour when she hit the family waiting at the bus stop in march. right after the crash, sfmta and city officials proposed changes to the street. community members rallied against it, worried it would negatively impact local business. the da's findings now confirm what many in this community have been saying. >> the cause was not how we operate here, but it was driver error and that has now been confirmed by the da's office. >> the supervisor for the district said traffic changes are still needed at that intersection. the city is working with the merchants on that.

>> the unhoused man accused of pushing a woman in front of a bart train will be charged with murder. in a statement yesterday, district attorney brooke jenkins says the 49 year old intentionally killed 74 year old corazon dandan by pushing her into the path of an oncoming train at the powell street bart station monday night. dan dunn's family tells us she was heading home from her night shift as a telephone operator at the marriott in union square. we are deciding not to release the man's name, who has been accused in charge because he has not been officially charged yet. he is due in court tomorrow. >> now to new developments in that mass shooting that happened during oakland's juneteenth celebration at lake merritt, 23 year old juan kelly of oakland was charged today with four felony counts. i should say, yesterday with four felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. prosecutors say. evidence shows that kelly fired the weapon into

a massive crowd, injuring four people. a total a total of 14 people were shot. kelly is being held on $1.6 million bail. >> president biden is vowing to stay in the presidential race despite sources reportedly saying he's keeping an open mind. he met with a group of democratic governors, including california governor gavin newsom, and what was being described as a candid discussion. so gloria, now, how are governors reacting after that meeting? >> good morning. kumasi. well, president biden met yesterday with more than 20 democratic governors to discuss last week's debate and the path forward. and he told them that he is staying in the race. two governors have been floated as potential replacements for him michigan's gretchen whitmer and governor gavin newsom both attended last night's meeting in person and say they are sticking by president biden. newsom wrote, quote, i heard three words from the president. he's all in, and so am i. many other governors doubled down on their support. they cite the president's accomplishments during his first

quite a amount of warm weather still with us, but around the surface. we're currently in the 50s and 60s right now, so look at future weather. let's go hour by hour for you. time out the rest of your day. just like yesterday. it feels pretty warm pretty fast around here. by 1 p.m. we're well into the 90s. lots of 80s around the bay shoreline, and then later on this afternoon we will be quite hot inland. not as hot as yesterday, but really, your body can't tell the difference between 102 and 104. it's just dangerously hot in our inland areas. will be into the 80s and 90s once again around the bay shoreline. the coast is quite comfortable staying in the 60s, so highs today only 68. in half moon bay. we'll be at 77 in the city, 87 in oakland, 98 in san jose, 97 in napa, 100 for the high in concord, antioch and livermore. the red flag warning does continue. this has been extended until saturday for the high risk of fire danger. of course, tonight very vigilant out there with those fireworks in the dry conditions. reggie drew. >> thank you. the risk of a wildfire remains high this 4th

you're never cool. oh. you know, and that's when you see neighbors just panicking and trying to get out. that's when it hit me like, this is real. i got to leave. >> ooh. happening now. thousands of people being forced to leave their homes because of a growing wildfire near oroville this morning, the thompson fire has burned more than 3500 acres in butte county. firefighters are making progress, though at 7% contained. that fire is burning near lake oroville now. several buildings have been destroyed, but cal fire hasn't determined the exact number yet. we know at least four firefighters were hurt while battling the flames. people who live nearby rushed out of their homes as that fire

inched closer. >> this is the closest that it's been, and we had giant embers dropping on the driveway and i said, okay, we got to go. i can't, i can't do this. >> governor gavin newsom declared a state of emergency. meanwhile, attorney general rob bonta is issuing a warning over price gouging. state law makes it illegal to jack up prices on things like food and gasoline in an emergency. >> in the east bay, officials are trying to reduce the fire risk this july 4th. gloria, what safety measures are they taking to protect people? >> good morning reggie. well, in response to concerns about fire safety and emergency vehicle access, officials are closing several streets in the oakland hills. so these streets will be closed today. southbound, lakeshore boulevard from macarthur to east 18th street, bellevue avenue, el embarcadero, and portions of grand avenue, including the off ramp from i-580, grizzly peak boulevard between skyline and centennial drive, will also be closed starting at six this morning until 6 a.m. tomorrow, and this

is usually a popular spot for people to watch fireworks. but because of fire concerns, this stretch of road is going to be closed and there will be emergency personnel on hand to keep people from entering. this corridor has closed for 4th of july for the last five years, and officials say because of that, there have been no confirmed fires and the closures have significantly reduced crowds and illegal parking at the lookout points. now, if you have unused fireworks, take a look at your screen right here, because these are the oakland fire stations where you can drop them off so they can be properly disposed. and hopefully we'll get that graphic up for you here in a second. all fireworks are illegal in oakland, so if you are caught with them, you can face a $1,000 fine. of course, you don't want to get that kumasi. >> thanks, gloria. for many cities across the bay area, drones will be lighting up the sky for independence day celebrations. some of those locations include, as you see here, san pablo, napa and mare island journal entries are pretty special. >> we're not in the business of replacing fireworks by any

means. we like to call ourselves an alternative. >> supporters say drones are safer during fire season and more environmentally friendly. plus, it minimizes noise disturbances and litter. veterinarians we spoke with say every year, july 4th celebrations lead to a 60% surge in lost pets, and having a microchip isn't always enough. the medical director at the city of san jose animal care center shared some tips, including creating a comfortable hiding spot, locking doggie doors, playing calm music or white noise, and exploring calming treatments like hugging sweaters or even medication. and avoid a common mistake when it comes to microchips, i would definitely log to on the website that your microchip is linked to, and make sure that your phone number and email and address are accurate. >> we get a lot where the phone numbers have been disconnected, so it becomes a dead end chip. >> also, if you do lose your pet, try posting on nextdoor or

going back above 100 degrees this afternoon. and in fact we'll stay above 100 degrees each afternoon through the middle part of next week inland. this is a long duration heat wave around the bay shoreline will be in the upper 80s, if not the lower 90s. in spots. and then along the coast, it's mostly sunny. we'll keep those temperatures cool in the 60s, so extreme heat inland continues highs in our microclimates in the south bay 98. in san jose, 103. in morgan hill today, 102. in los gatos, 93, in cupertino, redwood city, up to 96 this afternoon, 91 in mountain view. but the coast again, nice upper 60s, lower 70s across the city today along the immediate coastline, will be in the 60s 70s for the richmond and sunset. and then downtown will be in the upper 70s, south city at about 83 degrees in the north bay. it's another hot day with excessive heat warnings in effect 100 sonoma go to 104 in cloverdale, 98 in petaluma. but stinson beach looking lovely at 74 degrees in the east bay. it is warm to hot 87 in oakland, but 94 in fremont, 96 castro valley and inland. excessively

reportedly being bought by the company behind saks fifth avenue, the wall street journal says amazon is also taking a minority stake in the deal to provide new tech and logistical expertise. number seven today, the iconic caesar salad turns 100 years old. it was created at a restaurant in tijuana, mexico. ride hailing companies could soon face an additional tax. transit activists in san francisco want that money to help muni close its large budget deficit, expected next year. today, they will be turning in signatures collected in support of this proposal. this is according to the examiner. the community transit act would impose a graduated tax on uber, lyft and waymo services in the city. the money would go toward maintaining or expanding muni service and toward its discounted fare programs. >> aquarium of the bay in san francisco is asking the state to investigate its ousted president over allegations of financial and operational mismanagement. officials voted to refer those allegations about george jacob

to the attorney general's office. jacob was forced to resign in may over concerns about his spending, while the aquarium suffered financial trouble, according to the chronicle. jacob's attorney said he is being defamed. the association of zoos and aquariums recently found the facility did not meet standards regarding safety, employee morale and turnover. >> a $10 billion climate bond is going to be on the california ballot this november. yesterday was the last day for lawmakers to approve the measure. to put it before voters, it would help to improve the water supply, prepare for wildfires and protect the coast from rising sea levels. the rush to finish business before the holiday break was slowed when a group of pro-palestinian protesters came into the chamber and shouted down lawmakers for the first time in state history, california is set to impose permanent water restrictions on cities and towns. >> the chronicle is reporting that the state water board approved this policy yesterday. urban water suppliers will have to reduce the amount of water

exhaustion on tuesday night, mayor matt mehan says in response. city staff are handing out bottled water to unhoused people. he says the city is working on doubling the amount of quick builds and safe sleeping and safe parking sites. we spoke with a woman who is a homeless advocate and she says, you can't force people into shelters or tents and says that the news of this death, unfortunately, is not surprising, completely expected. >> and i'm sure that there's going to be many more. i mean, there's a war on unhoused people here in san jose and santa clara county. >> i feel responsibility for that as mayor. you know, i want everybody in our community to be safe. and i you know, while it's, you know, not not all deaths are preventable, this one was san jose has three cooling centers open, and you can see the locations right there on your screen. >> they're open from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. until at least saturday. reggie. >> all right. thank you so much. the search continues this morning for a man who was last

seen swimming off the villa grande beach in monte rio. officials believe the man in his mid-twenties could have drowned in the russian river after 6 p.m. yesterday. this rescue effort comes as a warning to be careful in the water this summe. >> the main thing is don't get in water over your head. if you can't swim, make sure you know what you're doing when you get in the water. keep your head about you. watch what's going on. watch for snags, but mainly have flotation device on several divers and rescuers on jet skis tried to locate him yesterday, but they had no luck. >> they also used a boat with sonar technology to check the bottom of the river. last night's search was temporarily called off after dark for the rescue crews safety. the heat wave is forcing cities across the bay area to cancel, or at least scale back their 4th of july celebrations. that includes antioch, healdsburg, yountville, saint helena. but that's not the case in danville. abc seven news reporter lena howland is there this morning. and lena, people are already gathering for this morning's parade.

been brutally attacked and robbed in just the last week, police say there is no sign the victims are being targeted because of their race, but it is a majority asian american community. >> abc seven news anchor dion lim has the latest on the investigation that you'll see only on seven. >> i was just horrified. >> there is no shortage of terrifying stories from residents of a senior living facility who have been attacked in recent days. >> it was happening every hour on the hour, sister marie taylor is president of the westlake christian terrace resident council. >> she says she's counted nearly 30 violent attacks and robberies on elderly asian residents in a span of less than a week, police say about a dozen victims have reported the crimes. >> not only do you just grab their purse, but then you beat them brutally. we have several that were had to be taken to the emergency. one broke their wrist. we had police on saturday almost seven hours filing

reports, residents filing reports, and then it continued on sunday with more multiple residents being attacked. >> this block of 28th street, north of lake merritt, is home to more than 700 elders, with an average age of 85. many walk along nearby valdez to get to the grocery store and run errands. >> one of the victims on saturday is an alzheimer lady, so she couldn't even quite remember what happened. >> these crimes are why more than 50 residents gathered on wednesday to show support for one another and to tell the city enough is enough. >> this is serious and needs to be addressed. most aggressively. >> oakland police tell me they've made several key arrests in these cases, thanks in part to residents reporting the crimes. however, they encourage even more people to come forward and that's really what made a difference. >> on monday, i set my special resource section out by crime reduction teams and my community resource officers to go out and

now evacuating some workers from rigs in the gulf. beryl hit jamaica as a category four hurricane. winds reached 140 miles an hour. the country's prime minister warned the island has not seen the worst of beryl's impact. up to nine feet of storm surge was expected, with flooding and mudslides. some tourists have to ride out the storm. >> we went to the airport just to make sure and every counter, just like they told us, they said, hey, every flight is full, you can't get off this island. >> and the hurricane has killed at least seven people. beryl could impact texas next week, possibly as a category one kumasi. >> thank you. gloria. a nasa crew that's been living in a mars simulation in houston for more than a year now, will be coming back to reality this weekend. we first told you about this idea back in 2021, so nasa built a 1700 square foot facility to simulate what it would be like for a people to
