honor america. triple digit temperatures did not keep people away from parades and celebrations, and the forecast is looking good for fireworks tonight. good afternoon and happy 4th of july to you. thanks for joining us on abc seven news at three i am j.r stone. the bay area is in day three of this heat wave advisories and excessive heat warnings continue to be in effect this afternoon from the east bay to san jose, people are facing triple digit temperatures up to 20 degrees above average in some spots. and on this fourth, some have made their way to the santa cruz boardwalk down there. the whole area there to cool off by the beach as we take a live look. abc seven news meteorologist drew tuma has a look at your accuweather forecast. >> here's a look at the accuweather headlines. high fire danger continues through the next several days, and this evening, especially because we have fireworks in the forecast and a lot of communities, we

need to be very cautious because things are so dry and so hot right now. that red flag warning does persist. we are hot for the fourth. our heat wave rolls on throughout the afternoon and this will continue again until the middle part of next week. but we are clear for the fireworks, the high pressure that has resulted in this heat wave also squashed our marine layer. so we're seeing clear skies even along the coast and some warm evening temperatures. if you're going to be grilling out through the evening, it's just hot sunshine inland. those temperatures underneath the excessive heat warning will be in the triple digits through 5 p.m, and then we'll dip into the 90s by 7 p.m. even around the bay shoreline. it will be quite warm. you can see by 9 p.m. we have those clear skies clear for any fireworks. here's the red flag warning that continues not only through tonight, but through saturday for the north bay mountains, the east bay hills, and the santa cruz mountains, where we not only have some of the hottest temperatures, we also have some gusty winds at times and dry air where humidity could drop down to as low as 1,011. the heat

rolls on the heat advisory around the bay shoreline continues, and then the excessive heat warning for most of us inland and an excessive heat warning, remember, is the highest threat when it comes to hot temperatures. this will continue through next wednesday. so again, look at nine days total underneath this heat wave. highs in our microclimates this afternoon we're hitting 98 in san jose 102 in los gatos, 96 in santa clara we'll go to 102 in gilroy along the peninsula 96 redwood city, 92. los altos, 91. mountain view, 90 san mateo, the coast so very comfortable, upper 60s to the lower 70s for daytime highs now across the city. pretty wide range of temperatures south san francisco in the low 80s will probably hit the upper 70s downtown, and then cooler as you head towards the ocean. sunset richmond districts in the 70s. similar story for daly city, but then the immediate coastline if you're right next to the ocean water, you'll likely stay in the 60s for daytime highs in the north bay, 70s along the coast. but you hop away from the coast and we have that excessive heat

warning. 104, in lakeport, 100in santa rosa, 96 in vallejo, 97 in san rafael. it's hot in the east bay today. 87 oakland, 94. fremont 96. castro valley and inland. another day where those highs are above 100 degrees 104 in concord, the same in livermore. hit 105 in brentwood. so looking at to the fireworks forecast this evening again, we have clear skies across the entire region. and here's a look at your 9 p.m. temperatures. we're still quite warm, 70s and 80s for santa rosa, livermore, oakland, san francisco will be in the 60s and then redwood city and san jose will be in the mid and upper 70s at 9 p.m. so overnight tonight we will keep those clear skies, temperatures will give us a little bit of relief in the overnight hours from the heat will stay in the 50s and 60s for the most part. heading into friday, the future tracker temperatures by friday. the heat wave continues. tomorrow will be day four of this heat wave. and then over the weekend, there's little change to our day to day temperatures. expect saturday and sunday to remain hot away from the coast. here's the accuweather seven day forecast the next seven days for you. we are sizzling for july this

phone when there are any important updates. in the north bay, temperatures were a bit more hospitable for those attending the annual 4th of july parade in sausalito. today's festivities included members of the cal marching band, as well as your usual assortment of red, white and blue floats and people waving that flag. tonight, there will be live music and fireworks starting at 630, and there was a big turnout for novato's annual 4th of july parade. even with temperatures in the low 80s when the festivities got underway at ten this morning, the march through town featured a rousing performance by the irish pipers band of san francisco. we also spotted lots of happy little kids bringing smiles to the parents faces as they wore their red, white and blue and you can see her waving her flag right there. the heat did not keep people away from the annual 4th of july parade in danville. it drew thousands of spectators. abc seven news reporter lena howland spoke with organizers

about their decision to move forward with the event. amid the heat wave. >> it's that small town feel that you don't get at all places. >> i don't know, it's got kind of a midwest atmosphere. >> it's fun to be out here with everyone. the diehards started setting up their chairs nearly 24 hours in advance. >> my favorite part of the parade is like, right now, when you show up at six in the morning and you look down the street and it's lined with chairs, it's always better to be early than to be late because, you know, if i'm late by a minute or five minutes, it's over. >> but this year, the 4th of july happens to fall in the middle of an eight day heat wave for california. danville parade organizers opted to move forward with it anyway because of the early start time. >> we've been doing it for so long and we've endured heat in previous years. it hasn't been like this for the last 4 or 5 years, but we've had hot days like this before, and the fact that we do it at 9 a.m, it's still relatively comfortable. we're just doing lots of water,

sunscreen, and we're gonna swim later. >> so and taking shade when it does feel a little too hot, though many along the parade route didn't seem to mind. >> we're hanging in there. >> it's doing fine. i mean, it's not it's not too bad. >> this is nothing compared to the independence those men and women have fought for our traditions, for our values, for the united states of america. so it's great to be here. >> this year's parade theme is celebrating the business of the san ramon valley in danville. lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you so much, lena. lots of smiles out there today. officials in the east bay are trying to reduce the fire risk. this 4th of july holiday that includes shutting down several streets in the oakland hills. these streets are closed today. southbound lakeshore boulevard from macarthur to east 18th street. bellevue avenue, el embarcadero, and portions of grand avenue, including the off ramp from i-580, grizzly peak boulevard between skyline and centennial drive, is closed until 6:00 tomorrow morning.

this is usually a popular spot for people to watch fireworks, but because of fire concerns, this stretch of road is going to be closed. there will be emergency personnel on hand to keep people fr this stretch of road is going to be closed. there will be emergency personnel on hand to keep people from entering. this corridor has been closed for the 4th of july for the last five years, officials say because of that, there have been no confirmed fires and the closures have significantly reduced crowds and illegal parking at the lookout points. and if you have unused fireworks, take a look at your screen. these are the oakland fire stations, where you can drop them off so they can be properly disposed. all fireworks are illegal in oakland. if you're caught with them, you can face a $1,000 fine. meanwhile holiday fireworks are canceled in oroville as a massive wildfire keeps thousands of people from their homes. crews are making slow progress against the thompson fire burning in butte county. containment is at 7.

that's up from zero yesterday. flames have burned across nearly 3800 acres and are threatening more than 12,000 structures. mandatory evacuations are in place and two shelters are open. several buildings have been destroyed, but cal fire has yet to determine the exact number. governor gavin newsom has declared a state of emergency. up next, joe biden, our president, not backing down, remaining defiant amid calls for him to drop out of the race for the white house and safe sizzling. if you're getting ready to grill out this 4th of july, we'll share some easy steps to take as you make ♪ hey, come on, come on ♪

the cancer was discovered early and she had successful lumpectomy on tuesday. she says she's getting excellent care from ucsf and urges all women to not skip their annual mammogram. spear served in congress from 2008 to 2023. earlier this year, she won a seat on the san mateo county board of supervisors. now to the race for the white house, president joe biden is pushing back on calls for him to step aside after that highly criticized debate performance last week. publicly, he says he's not going anywhere. but privately, sources tell abc news the president has acknowledged the next few days will be critical in deciding how he might move forward in his reelection bid. abc's em nguyen is in washington with details. >> a defiant president biden staying the course, telling a wisconsin radio show he's determined to beat donald trump

in november despite fallout from his admittedly poor debate performance last week. >> i had a bad night. i learned from my father, when you get knocked down, just get back up, get back up, and you know we're going to do we're going to win this election. >> the president publicly standing firm, but privately, sources say biden has acknowledged the next few days will be critical in determining whether he stays in the race. they said the president told at least two people he knows he has to perform well on upcoming appearances, including friday's interview with abc's george stephanopoulos. the president, though, stumbling through parts of the 20 minute radio interview, accidentally giving credit to trump before catching himself. >> and he wants to strengthen. i want to strengthen medicare and social security. he wants to cut social security, medicare. >> still, the president sought to quell concerns last night about his mental acuity and his reelection path forward. during a meeting with democratic governors. >> feedback was, we are all

looking for the path to win. >> meanwhile, former president trump was allegedly caught on camera speaking poorly of the president and vice president harris. trump appearing to be playing golf with his son barro, according to the daily beast, and allegedly calling biden broken down and harris so expletive bad. the biden-harris campaign slamming trump for his alleged comments with the list of accusations he's bad at including lying and taking away women's rights. >> who knows what other videotapes are going to arrive about donald trump, and what other relationships. so there are just too many variables. >> two democrats have broken rank and called on the president to step aside. now, sources say biden believes he's still the best candidate to defeat trump, but that he's keeping an open mind about the path forward. and when abc news, washington. >> governor gavin newsom is pledging his support to president biden. >> it's about the united states of america. we're all in this together. we're all better off

it's also an important time to think about the best food. practice safety so you can avoid things like foodborne illnesses. reporter denise dador from our sister station in los angeles, gives us a look at some common sense strategies that can save lives. >> the fourth is all about the fun and the feast until you start feeling very unwell. >> each year we have 3000 deaths of uh- foodborne illness. >> kenneth king from the u.s. department of agriculture says a safe sizzle begins long before your food hits the grill. if you're marinating meats, do that in the fridge. >> it's sitting out too long. that's when that bacteria is going to grow into the food, and that can get us sick during food prep. >> keep meat and poultry completely separate from fruits and veggies. wash knives and use different cutting boards and keep them apart on the grill. >> once your meat is fully cooked, then, your your vegetables will be fine. >> remember the marinade you put your meat in, discard it or boil it before basting it on cooked food and don't reuse the raw meat platter.

>> people make the mistake of placing the same cooked meat on that plate that had raw meat, and this is going to get you sick. >> besides a sturdy spatula, the most important grilling tool is a meat thermometer. keep clear of any bones because the bone will give an accurate reading. now that you're good with the grill, make sure your entire spread stay safe with this rule. >> keep hot foods, hot and cold foods cold. >> bring chafing dishes, slow cookers, coolers, and keep fresh ice under trays of potato salad. two hours on the table is the usual rule, but on hot summer days, king says, cut that time in half and if you're planning to use a smoker, don't use frozen meats and check your numbers for your smoker. >> your thermometer needs to be set to 225 degrees internally to 300 degrees inside of the smoke, king says. >> foodborne illness sends 128,000 americans to the hospital every year. certain groups are more susceptible toddlers, pregnant mothers, people with compromised immune systems, elderly people. >> so it's just a matter of

keeping everyone safe. >> common sense strategies that can save lives. denise studer, abc seven news. >> that food sure does look good. now it's time to talk about a 4th of july food tradition. the nathan's hot dog eating contest. this year, there's a new champion. three. two. one. >> put down the hot dog. >> 39 year old patrick bertoletti gulped down 58 hot dogs and ten minutes to win his first title at the annual competition on coney island. on the ladies side of things, miki sudo became a ten time champion by devouring 51 hot dogs in ten minutes to set a world record for women. while the men's stat was solid, it was not a record. 16 time champion joey chestnut did not compete in the main event because of a dispute over his recent sponsorship deal with impossible foods, a competitor of nathan's hot dogs. up next, the effort to keep lake tahoe blue. it's more important than ever with visitors hitting the

group that's trying to keep it clean, they're using some new age technology. abc seven news anchor dion lim learned about the effort from chris joseph, communications director for the league to save lake tahoe. here's dion and chris. >> what is the message you are sending to beach goers this year? >> basically, it's just to leave lake tahoe better than you found it. that's really our message. this place is beautiful, especially in the middle of summer when the lake is full, and that water is nice and clean and refreshing. but that means that big crowds are going to be coming up here. it's also going to be very hot in the valley, in the bay area. so if you're going, people are going to be coming up here looking for a little bit of refuge from that. but lake tahoe is not a national park. we get 15 million visitors every year. that's four times as many as yosemite. and there's no there's not as much staff to clean up after you. so just clean up after yourself. leave the beach more beautiful than you found it. so for next summer, it's just as, just as

lovely. >> always a good reminder. we are looking at your background and some aerial shots, and it always looks like a postcard. it is so perfect. i do have to ask you, you have a name change because in years past i think you referred to yourself as a different group. correct? now you are a league, almost like superheroes. >> we've. well thank you. that's that's very flattering, but we've we've always been the league to save lake tahoe, we're actually a 67 year old environmental nonprofit organization, people know us more frequently by our keep. tahoe blue logo and our slogan and stickers, though, so those are what you see. but behind the sticker is this a six plus decade old organization who basically solves the threats to lake tahoe's health and beauty, and we're all about keeping tahoe blue. >> okay, that certainly makes more sense to me. now let's get to this robot, because i'm envisioning one of those roombas that we use in our living room to pick up debris. tell us how this works. we're looking at video right now, and it looks pretty cool. >> yeah. so, this is the bee bot, the beach cleaning robot, and we've, we've brought it to the lake in collaboration with

our partners, eco clean solutions. and we actually have three bee bots now. and the way that they work is you can see it's a tracked vehicle that's kind of towing a sifting trailer behind it. and what that what that sifter does is reaches down below about, five centimeters below the sand and pulls out all of the tiny buried trash. and this these are things that, tiny pieces of, like, gum wrappers. uh- the corner from your bag of chips, things like that. cigarette butts that volunteers cannot pick up because they can't find them because they're buried below the sand. so the combination of human powered and innovative technology are going a long way to keep the beaches clean. >> that is really neat. and what does the trash situation like at the beach? not just during the holiday week, but all year round? >> it really depends on the visitation and the season, you're seeing right now some shots from some unfortunate shots from zephyr shoals last year in 2023. and these were an extreme outlier and obviously kind of a horrific scene, this is something we never, ever want to see again, which is why i'm

so pleased to be here talking to you, and sharing this message that, really, just for the folks who are coming up to clean after yourselves, clean up after others, do that little bit extra to leave tahoe better than you found it, because when that litter, if it gets into the lake, it's really, really difficult to remove, and we want to keep tahoe's water clean, clear and beautiful. but it depends on all of us doing our part. >> yeah. and speaking of doing our part, besides this new technology of these three b boats, what other ways are you doing to get the message out? working to turn that area into this blue beach, quote unquote. >> yeah. so the tahoe blue beaches program is something that we, we have worked on in collaboration with the us forest service, who owns upwards of 80% of the public of the land here in the basin. lots and lots of beaches and over over conducting ten plus years of litter cleanups. we gather a lot of data. we analyze that data. we've seen that different beach sites have different problems, so they need tailor made approaches. so tahoe blue

beaches is intended to kind of deliver that customizable approach. maybe it's more trash cans here. maybe it's more parking management here. maybe it's more, portable restrooms over here. the idea is to provide the setting. so when you come and visit the beach, making the right choice for keeping tahoe blue is the easy choice. >> okay. and real quickly, one last word of advice a message to anyone who happens to be heading to these areas this holiday wee. >> yep, it is clean up after yourself. clean up after others. be patient. everybody is here to have a good time and also join us on july fifth. we have a cleanup event happening and you can find that at keep tahoe blue.org/july five. >> and i will say just based off of years past, you do try to at least your group does make these cleanup events somewhat of a, you know, gathering a celebration, a community type event. so it's not necessarily seen as picking up trash, but more like a collaborative effort. >> oh yeah. it's a it's a party. honestly. it's a way to keep the
