the bay area tonight. there are reports of numerous fires, including this one where you can clearly see fireworks going off in the background. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm julian glover. we're going to start in san jose where there are multiple fires around lake cunningham. one of them is at the site where the city held a

sanctioned fireworks show. it's not clear, though, if those fireworks sparked this blaze. a viewer shared this video right here showing a hillside on fire with those fireworks going off. san jose fire tells us this is not the only fire in the city tonight. they're calling it very chaotic. a grass fire in martinez burned three acres tonight just off michelle drive. contra costa fire believes it was sparked by fireworks. thousands nearby watched the display. they continued to pop off above the crews as they fought the flames. they were able to stop forward progress there. thankfully, these fire in antioch you see here has forced some evacuations. it's burning near some homes in the hillcrest avenue area right now. not far away from highway four, and crews are also on the scene of this fire in bay point. we're told this is off shore road, not far from port chicago. highway forward progress. progress was stopped just about 45 minutes ago. there's no word of any damage there, and the unofficial

tradition of illegal fireworks lighting up the night sky happened in oakland. it's been popping off with lots of fireworks there. it really kicked up between the hours of nine and 10 p.m. tonight. so many were going off at once. you could see a smoke bank just growing above all of the road shows. there we're going to turn to some of the legal fireworks shows on this 4th of july for a change. the fog actually held off and people could actually see fireworks going off in the night sky in san francisco. abc seven news reporter tim johns was there and caught up with people who came from all over to check out the show. >> julian, there's been so much energy in the city today. everywhere we've gone throughout the day, it's just been teeming with people celebrating the holiday. the skies above the bay area were alight with the colors of fireworks thursday night at san francisco's ghirardelli square. thousands packed the shoreline for hours ahead of the show. that included wesley emmons and his family, who drove

in from the east bay. he says while they normally watch the show from alameda this year, his kids wanted a closer look. >> we're actually going to the alameda beach, and my kids would pinpoint each little firework that would go across the bay throughout the entire day. >> the streets of the city were buzzing with everything from performances to food to crowds of people. >> independence day and, what is it? liberty and justice for all >> along the embarcadero. me some noisy thousands came out to enjoy the warm day that included andre arroyo, who says the 4th of july is one of his favorite days of the year. >> a lot of people selling stuff. you got dancers out here. of course, the fireworks. no, not the families are out here at pier 35. >> the uss jeremiah o'brien was offering a special viewing opportunity for thursday's fireworks performance. guests there could go on board the ship starting at 7 p.m. for one of the best views in san francisco, the tugs with the barges will be right out there, and if the fog

doesn't come in high, the fireworks will be right above us. and while the fireworks themselves were reason enough for people to descend on the city on thursday, others came from other parts of the bay area just to escape the heat. it was 110 115 one. >> yeah. no, it's 70 now. we're cool. >> and julian, that is something we heard several times today amid this ongoing heat wave. many people told us they were keen to come here into san francisco and not just to see the fireworks, but also to get away from some of those blistering temperatures. i'm in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. >> let's take you to the south bay now, where in sunnyvale, there was a drone show for the 4th of july. these shows have certainly grown in popularity in recent years, and some people consider them the celebration of the future. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez was there as the show took flight for the first 4th of july in sunnyvale. >> drones took to the sky in

place of fireworks. 300 drones launched 400ft above baylands park, creating different images. the show lasted for eight minutes and the drone team working to make all this happen were 100 yards away. before it got dark, we were able to capture the pixie's drone team, conduct their hover tests. the lead pilot, holly hopkins, explained. each drone is controlled by a battery. >> it knows where it's at in space, and it knows we send the path file and it's like, okay, this is my job today. so it figures out what the choreography is of the dance because we call when they're up in flight. it's a dance. >> hopkins said each drone is equipped with three led lights. >> you can see the images from about two miles away, and you can see the lights from about five miles out. this is the control station, so it's where we do all the all our vr controlling from the control station to baylands park, crowds of families were pouring in. >> mayor larry kline was inspired to bring a drone show

to the city after seeing one last year. >> it's a safe alternative to fireworks especially, you know, as we're sitting in continuous droughts every summer. this is a great solution, you know, and it also doesn't have the noise pollution that people complain about, even furry friends were able to join in on the fun. >> i told becky, i said yes, i say, yeah, we should bring see me out and then, you know, we're going to enjoy it together. you know, city staff tell me they weren't sure how many people would attend, but they're estimating at least 2000 people are here. >> i'm excited to see it because i don't think i've ever seen one like online. so i'm just waiting to, like, be surprised to see how it looks and things like that. >> i'm really looking forward to the fact that the crowd is so close. i can hear them cheer. and that's my absolute favorite part of any of these in sunnyvale. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> incredible images right there. the ninth annual 4th of july fireworks festival kicked off with a big bang at the

almaden lake park in san jose. the night sky lit up with the colorful display there. the show got started earlier in the day with some live music, food trucks, and a fun zone for families. while the parade went on in alameda. even in the extreme heat that we saw out there today, the city claims there is the longest 4th of july parade in the country. there, in alameda. the estimate they estimate rather tens of thousands of people were in the crowds as they weaved through the downtown city streets, some busy streets and parks throughout the east bay were closed, though, because of the heat. over the years, high temperatures have been a challenge, but not enough to break tradition. >> we always have a chair and we always have some shade. it's a tradition. it's something we always do every single year, and we're all together. and like i said, these guys i went to kindergarten with, i've seen it so many times, but i still enjoy it. >> and i like seeing i always see people i haven't seen in a while. >> this parade is long. it spans

3.3 miles with more than 170 entries and 2500 participants. danville's annual 4th of july parade drew thousands of people despite temperatures in the 90s. this morning, the parade began at nine and lasted for several hours. spectators were urged to bring lots of water, sunscreen and sunglasses to stay safe >> it's that small town feel that you don't get at all places. >> i don't know, it's got kind of a midwest atmosphere. >> it's fun to be out here with everyone, the diehards, they set up their chairs 24 hours in advance. >> that's what you're looking at there. despite the heat, organizers decided to move ahead with the parade because of the early start time. at 9 a.m, the spectators along the parade route did not seem to mind. in the north bay, a big crowd packed the streets of novato for the annual 4th of july parade. the temperature was in the low 80s when things got going at 10:00 this morning, we spotted plenty of kids all decked out in

red, white and blue. okay, let's talk about the weather here. taking a live look outside. look at this. and we actually saw some relief from the heat as some fog began to roll in. today, i can't help but notice some fireworks still going off there in the distance though. spencer christian, our weather anchor, joins me now and spencer, give us a look at what we can expect in the 24 hours ahead. >> okay, julian, i'll do just that. first, we'll look at how hot it still is. i want to show you current temperature readings right now. it's 82 degrees right now in brentwood. we have upper 70s that cloverdale saint helena, uh, livermore, danville, so many of our inland areas are in the mid to upper 70s. still at this hour of the night. here's what we can expect tomorrow. here's your day planner early tomorrow morning. they'll be just a little bit of coastal fog hanging around it will be very thin, mainly sunny skies, temperatures in the mid to upper 60s from the bay to inland. by noon it will be heating up mid 90s inland. low 80s around the bay shoreline. mid 60s on the coast 4:00 in the afternoon, usually close to our peak of heating 104. in the hottest inland areas, nearly 90

around the bay. mid 60s on the coast and finally 7 p.m. still hot inland, mid 90s, but beginning to cool down elsewhere. will it cool down at all over the next few days? i'll answer that in my accuweather seven day forecast a little later. >> julian, i hope the answer is yes. we'll see you soon. thank you. spencer. well, the heat wave is being blamed for killing off hundreds of fish in a lake in fremont. the city says up to a thousand fish or more had died at central park's lake elizabeth. officials say the heat is not only lowering the water level, but also the amount of oxygen crews started, as you see here, cleaning up the fish yesterday after they were discovered. four buildings have been destroyed in the thompson fire. that's the one currently burning near lake oroville. some of the 28,000 people evacuated were downgraded today, allowing people to return to their homes. the flames are 7% contained after raging through more than 3500 acres. >> ever since yesterday, i've been up over 24 hours all last

night running around putting out hot spots. look how close we are to your home. >> i know ten feet from the porch. >> more than 12,000 buildings have been threatened by the flames. thankfully, the number of acres burned has not changed since yesterday. but cal fire warns another day of dry triple digit temperatures could increase the risk of fire spreading for the first time. we're hearing from the family of the woman who died after being pushed into an oncoming bart train, 74 year old corazon dan dan was killed monday night at the powell street station. her family is remembering her as energetic, a sister, an aunt, and they're celebrating the way she lived. corazon worked two jobs for more than two decades, including at hilton's parc 55 hotel in downtown san francisco. she was saving up to build a home in her native philippines, and while corazon never had children, she treated her nieces and nephews like they were her own. >> she raised me. she would go

was also questioned by hawaii's governor. >> look, i'm a physician and so was my place amongst the other governors. the democratic governors to ask the president, just humbly, how are you, mr. president? are you okay? uh- thursday, the debate day. you weren't who we are accustomed to seeing. the president reassured us. he did share with me as i've shared that he was exhausted and he had done quite a lot of travel in the two weeks before. >> california governor gavin newsom was also at that meeting yesterday. he's been serving as a surrogate for the president. he spent his 4th of july campaigning for biden in michigan. >> i had the opportunity to talk to the president for an hour, an hour and a half could have gone 2 or 3 hours. and i mean this with absolute conviction. that was the joe biden i remember from two weeks ago. that was the joe biden uh- that i remember from two years ago. >> newsom is going to remain on the campaign trail with stops in

pennsylvania and new hampshire. and don't forget, abc news anchor george stephanopoulos sits down with president biden for his first television interview since that debate. you can watch the 30 minute special. it airs tomorrow night at 8:00 right here on abc seven. the nonprofit keep tahoe blue is trying to prevent a repeat of last year's trash fiasco. you might remember the heaps of garbage left behind at lake tahoe on the 4th of july. they picked up 6,000 pounds of litter from one beach alone. this year they've planned out prevention strategies to target the specific types of trash they gathered. plus, they tried to get the word out to visitors to leave. no trace that they were there. >> the message really is that tahoe is a beautiful, special place, and it's a privilege to come here and enjoy this. we want to make sure everyone has that. so by just taking a few extra steps when you're here, you can ensure that we keep tahoe blue now and in the future. >> tens of thousands of people flooded to the region today to reach slightly cooler temperatures and of course,

celebrate the holiday. the league to save lake tahoe will host a beach cleanup with volunteers tomorrow, and they tell us it should be a party. well, this is a story we've been following closely. kali bunga is finally making a splash in san jose. it's the revamped raging waters and they welcome their first visitors today. >> we are open for business. finally, here at kali bunga and just excited for families to enjoy an experience. it's really become a pastime here in san jose. >> the water park was supposed to open last month, but there were several problems, including electrical issues that delayed the opening. but as abc seven news reporter ryan curry found, none of that mattered to the crowd. ready to cool off during this heat wave? >> okay, cue the steel guitar music, the flip flops and the palm trees. it's a total west coast vibe at the rebranded kali bunga water park in san jose when it was raging waters. >> yes. and we had a ball in. but i know we're going to have it even. what better time today

on this hot 4th of july? >> thousands waited in line for the park's soft opening. for 38 years. people came here to have fun and cool off. but last summer, the park announced its permanent closure. but disappointment has now turned into relief and happiness. >> it was actually a really sad and depressed, and there's nothing else really to do during the summer. so yeah, this is a really fun place. i'm glad it's reopened now. >> the city worked with california dream and entertainment to reopen this iconic summer spot, and fans are glad the largest water park in northern california is back. >> i saw that this place was opening again and i immediately bought a season pass. got to try it. >> this place looks like it checks all the boxes of a water park. cabanas, giant slides and of course i'm probably going to get a cocktail and be on the lazy river. >> i think that's my speed. >> why not? it is a holiday after all. even i couldn't resist watching everyone have fun. you can feel it. it's another day where it's over 100 degrees outside. but this water now that's cold. let's go cool off a little bit more. i'm

getting paid for this today. it's awesome. but what's even more awesome? the smiles on everyone's faces as they enjoy this oasis in the middle of a strong heat wave. >> lots of fun relaxation, spending time with family and friends. >> that's what it's all about. >> and that's really all you can ask for on this day in san jose. >> ryan curry, abc seven news. >> looks like the perfect way to cool off today. yes, spencer, i just want to tell folks we just got a really good update in the east bay. that fire that was burning in antioch, it's been put out, which also means people that live in the area of hillcrest can finally return to their homes. so some good news there. but, spencer, you've been telling us for days now that there was this heightened risk of fire danger mixed that with the 4th of july. and we're seeing, you know, all of these fires pop up. >> you're right about that, julian. and people have been setting off illegal fireworks all around the area, which is very risky. we have this red flag warning for high fire danger in effect until the weekend. but right now, let's talk about current conditions. here's a look at our satellite radar composite image. we still

have that onshore flow, but the winds are pretty calm at the moment in most locations. a little bit breezy out in the fairfield area with 24 mile per hour winds there. but most other locations have wind speeds under ten miles per hour. and although it's still hot in many inland areas, it is several degrees cooler, just about everywhere than it was at this time last night. so let's move along. take a closer look as you see fireworks going off in the distance. they can't be legally sanctioned fireworks right? 56 degrees in san francisco right now. we have mid to upper 60s at oakland and hayward. low 70s as san jose and redwood city, 54 at half moon bay, looking along the bay bridge from emeryville. of the temperature readings right now, mid to upper 50s at petaluma and santa rosa. so there will be some cooling there, but 63 at napa and low to mid 70s at fairfield, concord and livermore. those locations will not cool down much during the overnight hours. so during the overnight in our forecast headlines here, thin, shallow marine layer will develop near the coast, but it won't move very far inland. excessive heat warning remains in effect through next wednesday. red flag warning, to which i referred earlier, remains in effect

through saturday evening. now here's a look at that excessive heat warning, which covers virtually the entire bay area, in effect until 11 p.m. wednesday and during that time, of course, there's an increased risk of heat related illnesses. the red flag warning, in effect until 9 p.m. saturday for all of our hills and mountains. basically, the relative humidity will be dangerously low, down to about 10% at times with the gusty winds from time to time over 25mph. of course, that elevates the risk of fire the overnight hours. we'll see some little patches of drizzle offshore. it won't make it on land. a little bit of a thin, shallow marine layer will show up near the bay and the coast, but it will be gone by about 9:00 tomorrow morning. overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the upper 50s to low 60s. highs tomorrow, generally mid 60s at the coast. we'll see upper 80s near the bay near 90 and 100 to 105. in the hottest inland areas. here's the accuweather 70 forecast. and that kind of heat is going to be with us for a while. as you can see through the weekend and into
