before the celebration, he again dismissed calls to end his reelection campaign. >> you got me, man. i'm not going anywhere. all right? >> three democratic congressman lloyd doggett, raul grijalva and seth moulton are now calling for biden to drop out of the race after last week's debate performance. other democrats have questioned if biden's candidacy can continue. we needed a boost from thursday. >> we didn't get it and the campaign has been very, i think, arrogant in their response. >> we need a reset. we need a course correction. we've got to acknowledge that this was not just one bad night. >> during a meeting with democratic governors, sources say biden said he needs to get more sleep and work fewer hours, even suggesting he could not schedule anything after 8 p.m. >> joe biden is our president, he said. he's all in. i doubled down, said. i'm all in. and not only that, i'm here with you to prove it. >> california governor gavin newsom, campaigning in michigan for the biden-harris ticket, dismissed concern about biden's

more work to do to convince their own supporters that the president has the stamina to take on donald trump. as for former president trump, he spent yesterday speaking with veterans. he's challenging president biden to more debates. they have one more scheduled debate in september. andrea. christiane. >> thank you. president biden sits down today with our george stephanopoulos for his first post-debate tv interview. it airs tonight at eight eastern here on abc. breaking overnight, a suspected drunk driver is in custody in new york city accused of driving his truck into a park last night, killing three people and injuring six others. the victims include members of a family having a holiday picnic, several victims ended up pinned beneath the truck. >> firefighters in northern california are battling wildfires in a potentially historic heat wave. a large fire in butte county forced 29,000 people to evacuate this week. officials yesterday allowed them to return home. temperatures were about 110 degrees as crews

worked to contain the flames. >> obviously, having those high temperatures are tough on the body and it just kind of changes our strategy a little bit. on how we operate. we just make sure that we're taking in more water throughout the days, more work to rest cycles. >> meanwhile, a new wildfire is burning outside modesto, california, forcing evacuations in mariposa county. >> now to hurricane beryl gaining strength as it barrels toward mexico and the u.s. gulf coast. overnight hurricane beryl strengthening back to a category three storm now taking aim at mexico's yucatan peninsula, where resort towns are bracing for a direct hit. boarding up evacuating coastal communities while also moving 10,000 sea turtle eggs away from the storm's path in cancun. the hurricane, already blamed for at least nine deaths in the caribbean, damaging or destroying 95% of homes on two

islands in saint vincent and the grenadines. beryl weakened to a category two after hammering the cayman islands with a powerful storm surge and causing widespread damage across jamaica. the airport in montego bay was able to reopen last night, but people hoping to leave the island found no employees at the ticket counter. >> frustrated passengers waiting for days, the minister of tourism tells me that all three international airports on this island should be fully operational this morning. >> now texas is preparing handing out sandbags in corpus christi for potential impacts from beryl. as early as sunday night. beryl was expected to be a category two hurricane as it reaches mexico. we'll check your forecast in just a few moments. >> overseas, a major power shift in the uk. the conservative party has been voted out for the first time in 14 years. it's the worst election results in 200 years. labor party leader keir starmer will become britain's

next prime minister, with his party projected to win in a landslide. public support for the conservatives eroded after brexit and covid, and due to inflation, growing concern this morning about a wider war in the middle east as hezbollah intensifies attacks on northern israel, the iran backed militants fired more than 250 rockets and drones from lebanon in retaliation for the assassination of a top commander. >> at least one person was killed on each side of the border. abc's matt gutman was there as some of those attacks ignited fires. >> this fire is about to jump this road. it's climbed up this entire valley. you can see the flames. it's been climbing up the valley for the minutes that we've been here. and meanwhile, there's word of progress in the stalled talks for a cease fire and hostage deal in gaza. >> president biden spoke with prime minister benjamin netanyahu yesterday, and israel is reviewing the latest proposal from hamas. >> now to a series of shark attacks on this holiday weekend

in texas, it was one shark causing chaos on a popular beach. authorities in south texas are on high alert for sharks after four swimmers encountered the same shark off south padre island. video from a witness shows the shark near the shore, where a man suffered a severe bite to the leg. >> i turned around, he wasn't there anymore. >> the victim was pulled to shore by his father in law. i started swimming towards him and then he jumped up out of the water saying shark, shark, shark. >> and that's when adrenaline kicked in. i went right after him. the shark then bit a second victim and grazed a third. >> a fourth swimmer was also injured, fending off an attack. authorities captured this footage of the shark swimming in the area, then flew their helicopter closer to the water, scaring the shark away. >> it's not a real scene. it was like, how is this? how is this actually happening right now? >> all of the victims are expected to recover, but experts say the sharks behavior is consistent with how sharks hunt. looking for food by biting what's in front of them.

exclusive joe biden, george stephanopoulos tonight on abc, a spectacular eruption at italy's tallest volcano. >> lava shot from mount etna, sending what looked like a waterfall of molten rock down the mountain in sicily. the eruption led to the closure of a nearby airport. >> a holiday shoot out in yellowstone national park has left a suspect dead and a park ranger injured. the fbi is investigating the shooting near canyon view lodge. rangers responded to a call about an armed man making threats. at some point, a gun battle erupted and the suspect was killed. his name has not been released. the ranger is being treated at the hospital. no word on a motive. >> outside chicago, one community came together this holiday, hosting the 1st july

fourth parade since a deadly shooting massacre two years ago. they say they refused to let the tragedy define them. in highland park, illinois, outside chicago, a july 4th unlike any other, i wanted to come back and have different memories to replace the tragedy. it was two years ago when a lone gunman perched on a rooftop opened fire on the city's 4th of july parade, firing 83 rounds in one minute, seven people were killed, 48 wounded. this is the first year the parade was back, scaled down and along a different route, this time with a spirit of defiance. danny cohen's relative, jacki sundheim was among the victims lost two years ago. >> i'm here, you know, to prove to the world that some of us are still standing. and i want to memorialize and honor her. >> many of the hundreds of people lining the route said they did so to reclaim their

parade, their independence day. >> this is what we should be doing. it should come back and say, you know what? that horrendous thing that took place scared everybody and you know, put us all in a tailspin. and then now we're like, you know what? still, we're not going to allow it because that's the worst thing you can do. let them have power over you. >> and as for the man charged in the shooting, he recently rejected a plea deal and is set to go on trial in february. police say he dressed as a woman to escape the scene, a motive for the attack remains unclear. >> delta has been serving pasta only meals on its international flights after a flight was diverted this week due to spoiled food. about 70 people were sickened as they were heading from detroit to amsterdam. sources claim the food contained black mold. delta says it switched to the pasta option out of an abundance of caution. the fda reportedly only inspects airline caterers every 3 to 5 years. >> coming up, the july 4th fireworks mishap as a barge

boston missed out on their annual fireworks celebration after a barge went up in flames. the fireworks were supposed to be launched from the barge, so officials were forced to cancel the show. the fire erupted before the fireworks were loaded onto the barge. the cause is under investigation. >> we turn now to a new investigation into possible cheating by olympic athletes. in this case, u.s. officials are looking into the actions of chinese athletes. this morning, swimming's international governing body confirms the fbi has launched an investigation into chinese swimmers who failed doping tests but were allowed to continue competing. some of them are now headed to the summer games in paris this month. the controversy began just weeks before the tokyo games in 2021, when nearly two dozen chinese swimmers tested positive for a banned substance. chinese authorities blamed food contamination at their hotel. the world anti-doping agency did not challenge that explanation and allowed the athletes to compete. they went on to win three gold medals in tokyo. that decision by the anti-doping

agency was not disclosed until april of this year, and since then, u.s. lawmakers have pushed the justice department to investigate the case under a federal law that allows investigations into suspected doping conspiracies. even those outside the u.s. >> it is rather frustrating tha, over time, i never have felt like i was competing in a clean, clean field at a congressional hearing last month, michael phelps and other olympians criticized the world anti-doping agency for inconsistently enforcing the rules. as athletes, our faith can no longer be blindly placed in the world of anti-doping agency, an organization that continues to prove that it is either incapable or unwilling to enforce its policies consistently around the world, phelps saying if athletes aren't held accountable, the olympics will lose credibility. i think that's why we're here today, trying to fight for that change for the next generation. >> and during that hearing, lawmakers said they're willing to cut off millions in u.s. funding for the anti-doping agency. in a statement, the agency denied showing any bias
