news tonight. governor newsom joining him on the campaign trail. >> and we are in the thick of a record breaking heat wave. this is a live look outside this morning right here in san francisco. and much of the bay area can expect high temperatures heading into the weekend. good morning to you. it is friday, july 5th. hope you had a great holiday everybody. >> yes. and it was a warm one. and that's continuing today. >> yeah. folks at the beach yesterday similar to today we'll find hot temperatures inland once again. so the accuweather forecast shows you the heat wave is rolling on for another day. live look from the exploratorium camera. you can see the lasers at the ferry building lit up for the 4th of july holiday temperatures. right now it is one of our cooler mornings that we've had so far this week. we're in the 50s and the 60s around the bay shoreline. currently 60, in redwood city. we're at 69, in san jose, 58 that current temperature in oakland, the wider picture showing you it's still quite mild inland concord, brentwood in the 60s and 70s, but cooler in the north bay, sonoma, san rafael and santa rosa. we're starting out our morning in the

50s. so the heat advisories, they continue and the excessive heat warnings will last until next wednesday. so just like yesterday inland, it's another hot day. temperatures warm into the triple digits exceeding about 100 degrees later on. this afternoon, where we have those excessive heat warnings in effect, another warm one around the bay shoreline. we're back into the 80s and 90s with that heat advisory. lots of sunshine on the way for your friday around the bay shoreline along the coast this morning. we do have some thick fog right now, and it's a mix of sun and clouds throughout the afternoon. and again, temperatures nice and comfortable. keep it in the 60s for daytime highs. kumasi. >> thank you drew. some 4th of july celebrations. got a bit out of hand last night, but in many instances these brush fires were started by fireworks in san jos. there were multiple fires around lake cunningham, one of them at the site where they held a city sanctioned fireworks show. but it's not clear yet if those fireworks is what started the blaze. a viewer shared video showing a hillside on fire with

fireworks going off. san jose fire tells us this was not the only fire in town last night, and a grass fire in martinez burned three acres just off of michelle drive. >> contra costa fire believes it was sparked by fireworks. thousands nearby watch the display and they continue to pop off above the crews as they fought the flames. now they were able to stop forward progress though, so that's good. >> take a look at this. a brush fire in antioch forced evacuations for a short while last night. it burned near some homes in the hillcrest avenue area, not too far from highway four. luckily, crews were able to get that fire under control pretty quickly. >> fire crews were also called to the scene of this fire in bay point. it's off shore road, not far from port chicago highway. firefighters were able to completely stop this fire in under an hour after arriving on the scene. no word of any damages. there >> the unofficial tradition of illegal fireworks lit up the sky over oakland. this is a video taken from our cameras over the city, and it really picked up

between 9 and 10 p.m, carrying on well into the early morning. so many were going off at once that you could see a smoke bank growing above all these rogue shows. >> unfortunately, over in berkeley, police say two teenagers were injured by fireworks. one of them was taken to the hospital. it happened on fairview street. that's near ellis. officers responded to the intersection shortly before ten last night. it's not clear if the teens were handling the fireworks or if somebody else was. >> one of the juveniles had to be transported to a local area hospital with moderate injuries, but he's expected to survive. the second juvenile. he had minor injuries. he was treated on scene and he was released to a parent or guardian. >> sergeant donovan edwards says the teens parents were notified as soon as they found the boys. >> there were some illegal fireworks shows that went off without a hitch. people came from all over to celebrate at san francisco's waterfront. crowds gathered hours before the

fireworks show to watch early performances and eat some good food. some drove in from the east bay, hoping to get a of relief from this heat wave. >> there's a lot of, you know, a lot of people selling stuff. you got dancers out here. of course, the fireworks. no, not the families are out here. >> once the sun went down, the skies lit up with all the colors of the fireworks along the embarcadero. celebrations went late into the night, and there are clear skies and breaking overnight. >> a major shakeup in british politics. the labor party has won a landslide victory in parliament, ousting conservative rule for the first time in 14 years. just an hour ago, new prime minister keir starmer met with king charles at buckingham palace. now the former prime minister, who's a stanford grad, says he will step down as leader of the conservative party. this is a massive shift in leadership but was expected as people in britain have been upset about many things, including the rising cost of living. now to us

politics and president biden's fight to convince voters that he has what it takes to stay in the race for the white house today, he is back on the campaign trail as he sits down with abc news for a much anticipated interview. it comes as his campaign is facing new challenges. here's abc news reporter christiane cordero >> he stood on a white house balcony above a 4th of july crowd for president joe biden. these days, every move is a bid to show he belongs on top of the democratic ticket. three democratic congressman lloyd doggett, raul grijalva and seth moulton have called for biden to drop out of the race after last week's debate performance. others are criticizing the biden campaign's response, urging a change in strategy. we needed a boost from thursday. >> we didn't get it, and the campaign has been very, i think, arrogant in their response. >> we need a reset. we need a course correction. we've got to acknowledge that this was not just one bad night. >> the white house has repeatedly dismissed last week's debate as a bad night, first

saying the president had not received any medical exams in the days after, then acknowledging he was seen by a doctor as he was recovering from a cold during a meeting with democratic governors, sources tell abc news. biden said he needs to get more sleep and work fewer hours, suggesting he shouldn't schedule anything after 8 p.m. while campaigning for the biden-harris ticket in michigan, california governor gavin newsom, whose name has been mentioned as a possible replacement should biden step aside, weighed in. >> i didn't it wasn't a literal 8:00. i will be doing things differently. it was more figurative. >> former president trump spent the holiday speaking with veterans and attacked biden, posting on truth social. happy 4th of july to all, including to our highly incapable president. he then mocked biden's debate performance. vice president kamala harris and special prosecutor jack smith. president biden visits several key battleground states this weekend to show voters he still up for the job. biden and trump have one more scheduled debate in september, hosted by abc news christiane cordero, abc news,

washington. >> governor newsom is doubling down on his support for president biden. he was on the campaign trail in michigan yesterday, urging voters to stay calm and support the president. governor newsom was one of 20 democratic governors who met with the president at the white house this week. he says the president is still a viable candidate. >> that was the joe biden i remember from two weeks ago. that was the joe biden uh- that i remember from two years ago. that's the joe biden that i'm looking forward to. >> reelecting as president of united states during yesterday's event, newsom sidestepped questions about what would happen if president biden does end up ending his campaign, including whether he would enter the race or if he would support vice president kamala harris for president. >> tonight, abc news anchor george stephanopoulos is sitting down with president biden for the exclusive first tv interview since that debate. you can watch the 30 minute special at 8:00

tonight right here on abc seven. >> it's 508 on our friday and the accuweather forecast. we continue to have that red flag warning in effect today through tomorrow for hot temperatures, low humidity down to 10. some gusty winds. we saw some fires spark last night. our vegetation is pretty dry because of our heat wave over the past couple of days, and that heat wave does continue through the upcoming weekend. so the heat risk today we continue to find those areas away from the coast that major to extreme heat continues. this is day four of our nine day heat wave. so those areas, especially in red and magenta, that is where we'll find some of the hottest temperatures again today. and we've been above 100 degrees in many of these cities the past few days. so future weather showing you again, we will have another morning where it is mild. out there we have those temperatures warming pretty fast by lunchtime. we're in the 70s and 80s around the bay shoreline, 80s and 90s inland along the coast. we're keeping it quite comfortable. in the 60s. i think the coast has a bit more fog today compared to yesterday or the day before. so

mix of sun and clouds at our beaches today for the afternoon again, this is 4 p.m. we're going above 100 degrees in our hottest areas inland. it's still quite warm if not hot around the bay shoreline with heat advisories in effect. and again, the coast is pretty comfortable for friday night plans. it looks lovely out there. our sky will be clear, but it will be quite warm away from the coast, so looking at highs today, our heat wave rolls on for another day. 103 in concord, 105. in antioch 104. in livermore. we'll hit 94. in san jose, 93 in fremont, 85 in oakland, 76. in the city, even cooler, close to the ocean in the 60s in the city, 101 in santa rosa will go to 97 in napa for a daytime high. so looking at the next three days, our heat wave will continue through the upcoming weekend. inland that dangerous heat will persist, but on the seven day forecast, we are finding cooler weather moving in next week. gloria, we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. >> all right. drew, well, thank you so much. and this morning, we're hearing from the family of the woman killed this week at a

area on mexico's yucatan peninsula as a category two storm. it is bringing destructive winds, storm surge and torrential rain. abc news reporter andrea fujii has a look at the preparations ahead of the storm and the devastation. the storm has left behind in the caribbean. >> overnight, hurricane beryl strengthening back to a category three storm now taking aim at mexico's yucatan peninsula, where resort towns are bracing for a direct hit. boarding up evacuating coastal communities while also moving 10,000 sea

turtle eggs away from the storm's path in cancun. the hurricane, already blamed for at least nine deaths in the caribbean, damaging or destroying 95% of homes on two islands in saint vincent and the grenadines. beryl weakened to a category two after hammering the cayman islands with a powerful storm surge and causing widespread damage across jamaic. the airport in montego bay was able to reopen last night, but people hoping to leave the island found no employees at the ticket counter. >> frustrated passengers waiting for days. the minister of tourism tells me that all three international airports on this island should be fully operational this morning. >> now, texas is preparing handing out sandbags in corpus christi for potential impacts from beryl as early as sunday night. andrea fujii abc news, new york. >> back here in the bay area, heat is now being blamed for killing off hundreds of fish at

a lake in fremont. the city says up to 1000 fish or more died at central park's lake elizabeth. officials say the heat is not only lowering the water level, but also the amount of oxygen. crews started to clean up the fish yesterday when they discovered them. the heat didn't stop. 4th of july celebrations, though, from happening across the bay area in alameda, the longest 4th of july parade in the country drew tens of thousands to the city's downtown streets over the years. high temperatures have been a challenge, but not enough to break the tradition. >> and hopefully, we'll bring you a little interview with that in a little bit. but we were there for danville's parade. despite starting in the morning, temperatures got into the 90s. soon after sunrise. spectators were urged to bring lots of water, sunscreen and sunglasses to stay safe. we always have a chair and we always have some shade. >> it's a tradition. it's something we always do every single year and we're all together. and like i said, these

guys, i went to kindergarten with, i've seen it so many times, but i still enjoy it. >> and i like seeing i always see people i haven't seen in a while. >> to move ahead with the parade because of the early start time, i think that was interview from alameda. so we'll try to bring you the danville one here in a second. but the spectators along the parade route did not seem to mind. in the south bay, sunnyvale went with a drone show for the 4th of july. the shows have risen in popularity in recent years, and some people consider them the celebration of the future. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez was there as a show took flight. >> for the first 4th of july in sunnyvale, drones took to the sky in place of fireworks. drones launched 400ft above baylands park, creating different images. the show lasted for eight minutes and the drone team working to make all this happen were 100 yards away.

before it got dark, we were able to capture the pixiez drone team, conduct their hover test. the lead pilot, holly hopkins, explained. each drone is controlled by a battery. >> it knows where it's at in space, and it knows we send the path file and it's like, okay, this is my job today. so it figures out what the choreography is of the dance because we call when they're up and flight. it's a dance. >> hopkins said each drone is equipped with three led lights. >> you can see the images from about two miles away, and you can see the lights from about five miles out. this is the control station, so it's where we do all the all our of our controlling from the control station to baylands park, crowds of families were pouring in. >> mayor larry kline was inspired to bring a drone show to the city after seeing one last year. >> it's a safe alternative to fireworks especially, you know, as we're sitting in continuous droughts every summer. this is a great solution, you know, and it also doesn't have the noise

pollution that people complain about. >> even furry friends were able to join in on the fun. >> i told becky i said yes, i say, yeah, we should bring see me out. and then, you know, we're going to enjoy together. you know, city staff tell me they weren't sure how many people would attend, but they're estimating at least 2000 people are here. >> i'm excited to see it because i don't think i've ever seen one like online. so i'm just waiting to, like, be surprised to see how it looks and things like that. >> i'm really looking forward to the fact that the crowd is so close. i can hear them cheer. and that's my absolute favorite part of any of the shows. >> in sunnyvale, lauren martine, abc seven news. >> oh, that is nice and it was great to be outside yesterday. in some places and some. >> right, right, right. hi. yeah, so nice out. >> you know, it was a good day to be out. >> was. yeah. >> my pups still going through it this morning. the fireworks still going off at 3:40 a.m. so these drone shows bring them. i'm all for it outside this

morning. it is clear in most areas it's getting warm out there. here's a live look from our south beach camera. it is clear from this vantage point we do have a very, very thin marine layer along our coast this morning. half moon bay reporting cloudy skies. let's talk about the beach forecast. we will have clouds this morning. give away a little more sunshine this afternoon. it's going to be a cooler afternoon. if you went to the coast yesterday. felt nice in the 70s. today a lot of our area beaches you'll see will stay in the 60s. so 66 for ocean beach, 65 in half moon bay hit about 72 in bodega santa cruz, going for a high of 69 degrees. and that ocean water temperature currently sitting at 56 degrees. so our heat wave continues away from the coast. it's another hot one in the south bay 94 in san jose. today we'll go to 105 in morgan hill, 91 in cupertino, along the peninsula. it is warm heat advisories continue for good reason. 93 in redwood city, 92 in los altos, san mateo, at 89. the coast again a mix of sun and clouds, half moon bay in pacifica, a high of 65 and 69, respectively, across the city today we have a wide range. it's

cool in the sunset in richmond, will keep it in the 60s, but downtown will be in the mid 70s and then south san francisco going for a high of 83 degrees today in the north bay, our excessive heat continues 107 in cloverdale, 101 in santa rosa, 100in vallejo, 97 in napa. but sausalito, nice and cool at 72 degrees in the east bay, it is warm to hot, 85 in oakland, but 91 union city. castro valley, up to 95 degrees and inland are extreme. heat continues for a fourth day. 102 in walnut creek, 106 in brentwood, 104 in livermore. overnight tonight, just a thin patch of cloud cover along the coast for most of us will have clear skies, and we will get some comfortably cool weather moving in here overnight tonight for a lot of us will be in the 50s and 60s heading into the weekend. now. future tracker it's going to be a hot weekend away from the coast. we'll keep our heat wave rolling for another day. you notice though, the coast is quite comfortable in the 60s and 70s, but then away from the coast we have that triple digit heat once again, and we'll repeat this forecast

continues today. we have red flag warnings in effect, heat advisories and excessive heat warnings. this is day four of our nine day heat wave. again, intense heat inland but cooler along the coast. >> number two a busy 4th of july for fire crews. multiple fires broke out across the bay last night, including this fire in san jose. you could see flames as fireworks were shooting off in the background. >> and number three, a fast moving wildfire is threatening the town of mariposa, just outside of yosemite. it started yesterday afternoon and has quickly grown to more than 840

acres. >> number four some of mexico's most famous, famous resort cities like cancun and tulum are on alert this morning. hurricane beryl nearing that area and could bring a storm surge of up to three feet and up to eight inches of rain today. >> number five, the man accused of pushing a woman in front of a bart train is expected in court today. he's being charged with murder for the incident on monday night. >> number six tonight, president biden sitting down with abc news anchor george stephanopoulos for his first television interview since last week's presidential debate. you can watch the 30 minute special at 8 p.m. right here on abc seven. >> number seven alaska airlines flight attendants have agreed to a new contract. it includes a pay raise, and they'll now get paid while passengers are boarding flights. union members still have to vote to approve that agreement. >> the national rifle association is challenging california's 11% tax on firearm and ammunition sales. it is

filing a lawsuit on behalf of two plaintiffs who claim the cost of their purchases increased as a result of the legislation. the nra cites repeated supreme court rulings supporting the position that constitutional rights cannot be taxed. it says attacks on the right to bear arms under the second amendment is unconstitutional. the tax became law on july 1st, and it's aimed at retailers, not individuals. >> former bay area congresswoman jackie speier says she has breast cancer. she made it public yesterday on facebook. speier says the cancer was discovered early and she had a successful lumpectomy on tuesday. she urges all women not to skip their annual mammogram. speer served in congress from 2008 to 2023. earlier this year, she won a seat on the san mateo county board of supervisors. >> it appears the warriors have a new backcourt buddy for steph curry. >> our sister network, espn is reporting the dubs have acquired veteran guard buddy hield in a trade sign and trade deal with

but i know we're going to have it even. what better time today on this hot 4th of july, thousands waited in line for the park's soft opening. >> for 38 years, people came here to have fun and cool off. but last summer, the park announced its permanent closure. but disappointment has now turned into relief and happiness. >> it was actually a really sad and depressed, and there's nothing else really to do during the summer, so yeah, this is a really fun place. i'm glad it's reopened now. >> the city worked with california dream and entertainment to reopen this iconic summer spot, and fans are glad. the largest water park in northern california is back. >> i saw that this place was opening again and i immediately bought a season pass. i got to try it. >> this place looks like it checks all the boxes of a water park, cabanas, giant slides and of course i'm probably going to get a cocktail and be on the lazy river. >> i think that's my speed. >> why not? it is a holiday after all. even i couldn't resist watching everyone have fun. you can feel it. it's another day where it's over 100 degrees outside. but this water

>> one bay area family, now mourning the loss of a beloved aunt killed at the powell street. bart station this week. now, at 530, we hear from that family as a suspect prepares to face a judge today. >> fire danger remains high across northern california, while people living near lake oroville are being allowed to return home. another fire forcing evacuations this morning near yosemite. >> it was another year of unsanctioned fireworks shows. what you're looking at is the city of oakland. last night we watched as illegal fireworks were lit off for hours after sunset. i know i heard them at my home last night to all over. >> well, good morning everybody. it is friday, july 5th. >> and why don't we start with a check of the weather with meteorologist drew tuma? drew another hot day, right? yeah. >> away from the coast is going to be another scorcher. we'll take a look at our network of cameras this morning. the city showing clear skies in the mid 50s. up in the east bay hills. you can see clear view up there

at 72 degrees as you head up in elevation. san jose. good morning. you have clear skies near 70 right now. but santa cruz, look what has returned. the fog is back along the coast and it's thick at times. santa cruz right now coming in at 54 degrees. so current temperatures getting a bit more of that marine layer influence in our morning temperatures. so this is one of our cooler mornings. we've had this week. but we are in store for some hot temperatures again away from the coast. so inland a lot of sunshine, excessive heat warning continues for another day. this is day four of our nine day heat wave going above 100 degrees again later on this afternoon. it will be warm around the bay shoreline if not hot in the 80s and 90s with tons of sunshine out there along the coast. we do have some thick fog this morning, some lower visibility that keeps us cool in the 50s right now. later on this afternoon we'll break out for sunshine and highs going into the mid 60s for daytime temperatures. gloria. >> all right drew, thank you so much. an elderly driver charged in a crash that killed a family of four at a bus stop is expected in court today. prosecutors say the 78 year old was speeding aggressively,

excessively and on the wrong side of the road when she slammed into the bus stop. it happened on west portal avenue in san francisco back in march. police say she was not intoxicated. investigators say that they've also ruled out mechanical failure and a medical issue. >> the man accused of killing a woman at the powell street bart station in san francisco earlier this week, is expected in court today, district attorney brooke jenkins says murder charges are being brought against the 49 year old unhoused man. jenkins says the man intentionally killed 74 year old corazon duncan, pushing her into the path of an oncoming train monday night. her family is telling us that she was heading home from her night shift as a telephone operator at the marriott in union square, abc seven news reporter lou spence spoke with the family about the legacy she's leaving behind. >> inside her home, corazon darden's family opened up about the woman who was loved by many. >> for sure, she's beautiful, sweet, kind, loving

>> corazon was from the philippines, one of eight children. her name means heart in english, a heart that touched many. her older brother showed us photos of his little sister just two weeks before she was killed. >> this is cora. that's the last party we have surrounded by family was how corazon liked to live life. >> for years she had been saving for a lifelong dream that now she will never get to see. >> to build a house in the in the philippines. >> the night she was killed, corazon had just finished her 11 p.m. shift as a telephone operator at the hilton's park 55, in downtown san francisco. she was waiting for the same bart train she took home every night for over three decades. her nephew, alvin dandan, got the call from the hospital and was on coarse phone calling me, so my heart dropped and i said, what's going on? >> and who are you and where's my aunt?

>> alvin was in shock. his first call was to his uncle in the bay area. >> he is a really great and he told me cora died pushed her in the train. bart police said they arrested a 49 year old homeless man eight minutes after the incident. >> that's really make any difference to us, won't bring her back. it's a mentally ill person. it wasn't racially motivated. >> i don't think alvin doesn't want to remember his aunt, by the way, she died. but instead, by the way she lived. corazon never had children, so alvin and his cousin were like kids to her. >> she would go home and then uh- would borrow me, and we'd go to the mall and stuff like that, and they would bring me to my parents. >> corazon helped put alvin through medical school. he's now an intensive care doctor in

from call to call. now, as you mentioned, one of those fires is where the city held a sanctioned fireworks show for the 4th of july last night, though fire officials tell us there's no confirmation that this fire was started because of the professional show that is still under investigation. a viewer also shared some video showing a hillside on fire with fireworks going off over to contra costa county, where fire crews were also juggling multiple fires. one fire off of lotus street temporarily forced people in antioch out of their homes. this fire broke out just after ten last night. police had to help evacuate seniors in wheelchairs from an assisted living home right above the fire. we also saw a fire burning in the same area where illegal fireworks were found near wild horse road, over in martinez, a grass fire burned three acres last night. it happened just off of michelle drive just before 9:00. contra costa fire believes this one was sparked by fireworks. thousands

look into more deals and what items you may need to hold out on to get greater savings down the road with your gma first look. i'm becky worley, abc news, oakland, california. >> the state getting a helping hand from outer space coming up the road. nasa is planning to help prevent wildfires here in california. first, though, a check of our forecast. drew. >> yeah. kumasi. let's talk about that fire threat. our red flag warning. it does continue through today and into tomorrow evening for the north bay. the east bay hills and the santa cruz mountains. it's a combination where we have those hot temperatures, some gusty winds at times in the afternoon and that humidity that gets pretty dry down to 10. so we'll keep our eyes on anything. if it changes over the next couple of days. underneath that red flag warning, it's another day where temperatures are back above average and some of our hottest spots were close to 20 degrees above average. it's another day where that heat wave continues inland. it's our fourth day of temperatures well above 100 degrees, and our hottest spots. you can see places like livermore, concord, santa rosa quite warm today, even oakland

and san jose will feel warm if not hot in the 80s and 90s later on this afternoon. so live look from our tam cam. one of the changes we've noticed compared to the past couple of mornings. we have a little bit of fog out there and that makes a big difference in our temperatures in the afternoon. so you can see a little bit of fog over the north bay hills. you see that finger of fog stretching through the golden gate across the bay. and that's going to keep the coast relatively cool, even cooler than yesterday. so looking at your day planner today, we have those coastal clouds. your sunrise here at 554 this morning. it's a warm to hot day. those heat warnings are still in effect away from the coast for good reason. but the coast is going to remain cool with a mix of sun and clouds. your sunset this evening at 8:35 p.m. so looking at highs today, very similar to yesterday, it's excessively hot inland. we're back above 100 degrees. we have 80s and 90s around the bay shoreline and the coast. much more comfortable. 60s and 70s for daytime highs. the three day forecast shows you our heat wave. it's going to roll on

national park. the french fire started yesterday afternoon and it's quickly grown to more than 900 acres. it's 0% contained. evacuations have been ordered in the area, including a hospital in that area. officials say hot temperatures and winds have been making it hard to fight this fire. 17 buildings have destroyed have been destroyed in the thompson fire that's burning near lake oroville in butte county. some of the 28,000 evacuation orders have been downgraded, which allowed people to go back to their homes. the flames are 29% contained. after raging through more than 3700 acres ever since yesterday, i've

been up over 24 hours all last night running around putting out hot spots. >> look how close we are to your home. >> i know ten feet from the porch, more than 12,000 buildings have been have been threatened, i should say, by these flames. >> cal fire is making the heat. cal fire says the heat is making the fire challenging. >> stanford researchers are working on an experiment with wildfires. they are watching how fire behaves with different fire control techniques. and they also hope to learn the benefits and the drawbacks of specific techniques. in this case, researchers are looking at the effects of different intensities of fire on native and non-native plants. the team flagged off small areas into study zones, noting plant varieties and soil types in the area. one expert hopes the data will also add to his research. he says there's a newly discovered side effect from recent wildfires heat so intense it's making a naturally safe chemical toxic.

>> the big one is for us is chromium. so chromium exists in the what's called the trivalent form that's benign for humans, generally in soils and rocks. and when fire comes through, it catalyzes and changes it into hexavalent chromium. for anybody that remembers the erin brockovich movie, that's the chemical that got in the groundwater. >> and his team wants to learn which soils are most vulnerable and at what temperatures. this could potentially keep firefighters and cleanup crews safer in dangerous conditions. and nasa is also helping wildland fire management agencies when it comes to predicting and putting out fires. the agency is sharing active maps that allow users to track the location, extent and impact of wildfires in real time. abc seven news reporter melanie woodrow explains how this is the data and tool we've been developing for tracking active fire changes. >> tatton park is a research scientist at the nasa ames research center. ames is one of ten nasa field centers in the

country located in the heart of silicon valley. research and data being developed here are helping improve how communities respond to wildfires out there, especially during this active wildfire season. the thompson fire in butte county has burned more than 3000 acres. >> we use all the satellites that we launch to create improved images, so pictures of the earth that tell us exactly when a fire has started, how hot it is, what it might be burning. so what kinds of trees, grasses, how close it is to communities. and then we share that information with emergency responders. >> the data is shared in near real time with those emergency responders. it's also available to the public within 5 or 10 minutes. >> we can know where the fire starts and how the fire propagate. >> we are constantly tracking fuel conditions. we're creating new vegetation maps using nasa satellite imagery. >> you can see how the number of extreme fire weather days has increased over time. >> california has a more longer period of extreme fire weather. >> nasa scientists can't tell us exactly when the next big

wildfire will occur. >> predicting a fire season in california is actually about predicting human behavior, and that's because nine out of ten fires are caused by humans. so we could tell you how dry the landscape is. and how likely a fire is to start. if there was an ignition. what nasa can't do is predict if humans are actually going to be out there starting the fire, which is why wildfire prevention can't be overlooked in helping mitigate wildfire risks. >> in mountain view, melanie woodrow, abc seven news. >> volunteers will be out at lake tahoe this morning cleaning up the trash left behind after those 4th of july celebrations. this is what it looked like last year. the nonprofit keep tahoe blue picked up 6,000 pounds of litter from just one beach. this year, they have planned out prevention strategies to target the specific types of trash they've gathered. plus, they try to get the word out to visitors to leave no trace. >> the message really is that tahoe is a beautiful, special place and it's a privilege to come here and enjoy this. we want to make sure everyone has

thinking about going to the coast today, it will be cooler than yesterday. a lot of our beach communities will stay in the 60s for stinson ocean beach at 6665 and half moon bay 69. the high in santa cruz. and again, we'll go from morning clouds to a bit of afternoon sunshine and your ocean water temperature sitting at 56 degrees. so our heat wave continues for another day. highs in the microclimates in the south bay. it is hot again with lots of sunshine. 94 in san jose, 103 in gilroy. but santa cruz we get a little bit of that ocean breeze and that's going to keep us only to 69 for a daytime high along the peninsula. we'll hit 93. in redwood city, it's hot in san mateo at 89, 90 in mountain view, and then the coast will keep it in the 60s for half moon bay and pacifica across the city today, a pretty wide range in the sunset. the richmond ocean beach will keep it cool in the 60s. 71 for daly city warmer as you head downtown, 76 there and then south san francisco going back into the low 80s, a high of 83 degrees in the north bay. we'll hit 99 in sonoma, 107 in

cloverdale, 94 in san rafael, vallejo. up to 100 degrees this afternoon. it has hot again in the east bay. we have those heat advisories continuing for another day. we'll go to 84 in berkeley, 85 in oakland, but 91 in union city, orinda, up to 92. and then inland, where we have the excessive heat warning. we're back above 100 degrees in our hottest cities, 105, pittsburg, 104 and livermore. overnight tonight we'll have patchy fog along the coast, clear skies away from the coast some overnight relief for a lot of us 50s and 60s. so cooler air is there first thing tomorrow morning, but then tomorrow afternoon we repeat it again. excessively hot inland, but that coast still staying relatively comfortable for this time of the year. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we'll play the next seven days for you. we'll keep that heat wave rolling through the weekend. and also that red flag warning continues through saturday evening. early next week. we're still hot. and then by the middle part of next week, we should find cooler air, a deeper marine layer returning in temperatures not too hot inland, but still a bit above average

plea deal or face criminal charges related to two deadly crashes involving its 737 max planes. the deal, presented by the department of justice includes pleading guilty to criminal charges, a fine and a corporate monitor. the families of victims killed in the crashes say the deal is a slap on the wrist for the company. boeing has declined to comment. >> alaska airlines has a tentative contract agreement with its flight attendants that includes a nearly 32% pay raise. flight attendants will also be paid while passengers board. that is not the norm in the airline industry. union members still have to ratify the contract. a vote is expected later this month. >> a new mexico judge has cleared the way for alec baldwin

to go on trial starting next week for the shooting death of cinematographer halyna hutchins. earlier this week, the judge denied two motions from baldwin's attorneys, alleging that prosecutors improperly handled evidence procedures in the case. baldwin is facing manslaughter charges for hutchins death in 2021. a prop gun that he was handling misfired on the set of the movie rust. hutchins was killed by a bullet and was hit by a bullet, and then died. another person was injured. jury selection is set to begin on tuesday. >> amazon founder jeff bezos is selling off $5 billion worth of his shares in the company, and there are rumors this morning that he might be using the money to buy the seattle seahawks. bezos disclosed the sale of 25 million shares of amazon in a regulatory filing on tuesday. amazon stock also hit an all time high during trading that day. forbes ranks bezos is the second richest person in the world. three. two. one.

>> put down your hot dog. >> well, there is a new champion of the nathan's hot dog eating contest. 39 year old patrick bertoletti gulped down 58 hot dogs in ten minutes to win his first title at the annual 4th of july celebration and competition on coney island. on the ladies side, miki sudo became a ten time champion by devouring 51 hot dogs and ten minutes to set a world record for the women and 16 time nathan's champion joey chestnut did not compete in the main event yesterday because of a dispute over his recent sponsorship deal with impossible foods, but instead the bay area native held his own all beef hot dog eating contest in el paso, texas. he faced off against a team of four army soldiers, and chestnut devoured 57 hot dogs in just five minutes. that's one short of the coney island winner, but in half the time,
