certainly it is excessively hot. our heat wave rolls on for another day. our accuweather alert is still in effect as we're in day four of what will end up being a nine day heat wave. let's show you temperatures around the bay shoreline this morning. it's actually one of our cooler mornings this week. see, a lot of 50s on the board, some low 60s as well. as we widen out the map for you, you can see some of our inland communities much warmer in the 60s and 70s right now. so our excessive heat warning and our heat advisories do continue. the one exception, the heat advisory did end for san francisco yesterday. so san francisco will stay in the 70s today, but everywhere else we will find hotter temperatures. and that extreme heat risk is still with us inland today. so looking inland at our temperatures again, it's another hot afternoon, another day where high temperatures are above 100 degrees. you see that by 4 p.m. with a lot of sunshine around the bay. shoreline heat advisory still in effect. it's warm, if not hot, 80s and 90s, but it will be a bright day along the coast. right now, we do have some fog. we'll get some afternoon sunshine, and this is the place where folks are going to get that natural relief from

the intense heat inland. we'll have those temperatures in the 60s for daytime highs. kumasi. thank you. drew. >> developing news, fireworks and fires. keeping bay area firefighters busy overnight. abc seven news reporter lena howland live in san jose and lena. not everything went as planned at the professional fireworks show at lake cunningham. >> yeah, unfortunately. that's right. kumasi. at one point, fire officials were juggling three different fires here at lake cunningham last night, and one of them happened in the same place where the city was holding that sanctioned firework show for the 4th of july. take a look at this video. fire officials tell us there is no confirmation that this fire was started because of that professional show that is still under investigation at this time. a viewer also shared some video showing a hillside on fire with fireworks going off over to concord in contra costa county. people took firefighting into their own hands before fire crews showed up. this happened just before 11 last night as a

quick moving fire was threatening homes off of richard avenue. people were seen bringing out buckets of water and shovels to keep things at bay until fire crews got on scene. crews last night were also battling this fire in bay point. we're told this is off of shore road, not far from port chicago. highway forward. progress was stopped before midnight. there's no word of any damage. clearly a chaotic night for fire crews across the bay area. san jose fire officials tell us they were so overwhelmed. at one point, they asked cal fire for help. live in san jose. lena howland, abc seven news. all right, lena, thank you so much. >> unfortunately, over in berkeley, police say two teenagers were injured by fireworks. one of them was taken to the hospital. it happened on fairview street. this is near ellis. officers responded to the intersection shortly before ten last night. it's not clear if the teens were handling the fireworks or if somebody else was. >> one of the juveniles had to be transported to a local area

hospital with moderate injuries. but he's expected to survive. the second juvenile he had minor injuries. he was treated on scene and he was released to a parent or guardian. >> sergeant donovan edwards says that the teens parents were notified as soon as they found the boys. >> there were some illegal firework shows that went off with a hitch. people came from all over to celebrate at san francisco's waterfront, crowds gathered hours before the show to watch early performances and to get some good food, while thousands were keen to come here to sf to see the fireworks amid this ongoing heat wave, others are just happy to get away from the temperatures and a lot for a lot of people. the celebration and activities are worth the extra drive. >> there's a lot of, you know, a lot of people selling stuff. you got dancers out here. of course, the fireworks. no, not the families are out here. >> later that evening, as you can see, the skies were all lit up with colors from the fireworks along the embarcadero.

groups were camping out to watch the show. the celebrations went late into the night and they were clear skies and breaking overnight. >> a major shakeup in british politics. the labor party has won a landslide victory in parliament, ousting conservative rule for the first time in 14 years. just an hour ago, new prime minister keir starmer met with king charles at buckingham palace and now former prime minister rishi sunak, who is a stanford grad, says he will step down as leader of the conservative party. this is a massive shift in leadership, but it was expected, as people in britain have been upset about many things, including the rising cost of living and out to us politics and president biden's fight to convince voters he has what it takes to stay in the race for the white house. today he is back on the campaign trail and he sits down with abc news for a much anticipated interview. it comes as his campaign is facing new challenges. here's abc news reporter christiane cordero.

>> he stood on a white house balcony above a 4th of july crowd for president joe biden. these days, every move is a bid to show he belongs on top of the democratic ticket. three democratic congressman lloyd doggett, raul grijalva and seth moulton have called for biden to drop out of the race after last week's debate performance. others are criticizing the biden campaign's response, urging a change in strategy. we needed a boost from thursday. >> we didn't get it, and the campaign has been very, i think, arrogant in their response. >> we need a reset. we need a course correction. we've got to acknowledge that this was not just one bad night. >> the white house has repeatedly dismissed last week's debate as a bad night, first saying the president had not received any medical exams in the days after, then acknowledging he was seen by a doctor as he was recovering from a cold during a meeting with democratic governors, sources tell abc news. biden said he needs to get more sleep and work fewer hours, suggesting he shouldn't schedule anything after 8 p.m. while campaigning for the biden-harris ticket in michigan, california governor

gavin newsom, whose name has been mentioned as a possible replacement should biden step aside, weighed in. >> i didn't it wasn't a literal 8:00. i will be doing things differently. it was more figurative. >> former president trump spent the holidays speaking with veterans and attacked biden, posting on truth social. happy 4th of july to all, including to our highly incapable president. he then mocked biden's debate performance. vice president kamala harris and special prosecutor jack smith. president biden visits several key battleground states this weekend to show voters he still up for the job. biden and trump have one more scheduled debate in september, hosted by abc news christiane cordero, abc news washington. >> governor newsom is doubling down on his support for president biden on the campaign trail in michigan yesterday, urging voters to stay calm and support the president. governor newsom was one of 20 democratic governors who met with the president at the white house this week. he says the president is still a viable candidate. >> that was the joe biden i

santa cruz, our fog has returned to the immediate coastline. it's 55 degrees there right now. not only the heat, but the red flag. warning. this continues through tomorrow evening for those increased fire danger risk because of the hot temperatures, the low humidity and some gusty winds at times. looking at temperatures today, future weather showing you it's another day where we will warm pretty quickly by lunchtime. we're into the 90s inland 70s and 80s along the bay shoreline and the coast, remaining comfortably cool in the 60s and then later on this afternoon it's another day of that intense heat inland above 100 degrees, and our hottest cities, 80s and 90s, around the bay shoreline. so a high of 85 in oakland today, but 94 in san jose. we'll go to a hot 103 in concord, 101 in santa rosa, relatively mild in the city, 76 degrees in the cooler along the coast with sunshine, 65 for half moon bay. this heat wave does continue through the upcoming weekend. you look at that on the three day forecast, but cooler weather is in the forecast later next week. we'll show you that on the seven day coming up in

peninsula. the storm weakened to a category two as it moved over to loom less than 90 minutes ago. we want to show you video of the intense winds that people were facing in the hours before the storm made landfall. coastal towns have been boarding up windows. some areas had to be evacuated ahead of the storm. it's expected to bring several feet of storm surge and inches of rain over the next day. then it's on track to hit texas, but it will continue to weaken over the weekend. back here in the bay area, heat now being blamed for killing off hundreds of fish at a lake in fremont. the city says up to 1000 fish or more died at central park's lake elizabeth. officials say the heat is not only lowering the water level, but also the amount of oxygen. crews started to clean up the fish yesterday after they were discovered. well, the heat didn't stop. 4th of july celebrations from happening across the bay area in alameda. the longest 4th of july

parade in the country drew tens of thousands to the city's downtown streets over the years, high temperatures have been a challenge, but not enough to break tradition. >> we always have a chair and we always have some shade. it's a tradition. it's something we always do every single year, and we're all together. and like i said, these guys, i went to kindergarten with, i've seen it so many times, but i still enjoy it. >> and i like seeing i always see people i haven't seen in a while. >> the parade spans 3.3 miles, with more than 170 entries and 2500 participants. okay, danville. we were there for danville's parade. despite starting in the morning, the temperature soon got into the 90s after sunrise. people there were encouraged to bring lots of water, sunscreen, and sunglasses to stay safe. >> it's that small town feel that you don't get at all

places. >> i don't know, it's got kind of a midwest atmosphere. >> it's fun to be out here with everyone. >> despite the heat, organizers decided to move ahead with the parade because of the early start time. spectators along the parade route did not seem to mind. >> well, the south bay sunnyvale went with a drone show instead of a fireworks show. >> yes, 300 drones launched 400ft above baylands park yesterday. the drones flying to create different images in an eight minute long show. each drone, equipped with three led lights and choreographed by a drone team. so drone shows are considered as replacements for fireworks. >> it's a safe alternative to fireworks especially, you know, as we're sitting in continuous droughts every summer. this is a great solution, you know, and it also doesn't have the noise pollution that people complain about. >> some viewers even brought their pets along for the show. drones are becoming a popular alternative to fireworks because of their lack of noise and

wave continues away from the coast, highs in our microclimates, the south bay quite hot. 90s 102 for los gatos, 105. morgan hill 94 for san jose. we're back in the 90s for redwood city this afternoon, 9390 in mountain view, 89 san mateo. but the coast will stay in the 60s across the city today we have a wide range. the richmond, the sunset districts. ocean beach will be in the 60s. downtown will be in the upper 70s and then south san francisco going to 83 degrees in the north bay. it is hot away from the coast. 101 in santa rosa, 100 in vallejo, 94 in san rafael. but our coastal communities staying comfortable in the 60s and 70s for sausalito, 72 degrees hot in oakland today 8593 in fremont, 95 castro valley with sunny skies. then inland, we see those excessive heat warnings in effect for another day. 102 walnut creek 105 in antioch 104 in livermore. overnight tonight we will get some relief, our marine layer helping us out, bringing some cooler weather in the overnight hours, 50s and 60s for overnight lows heading into saturday. now we're back in it

into chinese swimmers who failed doping tests in the previous games. in the tokyo olympics, nearly two dozen chinese olympic swimmers failed their doping test. the chinese authorities blamed food contamination in

response, the world doping agency did not challenge a statement and allowed the athletes to compete. some of those athletes will also compete in the paris olympics and now well known athletes are calling out the agency for their inconsistency, like michael phelps. >> it is rather frustrating that, over time, i never have felt like i was competing in a clean, clean field. >> in a hearing last month, the u.s. threatened to cut funding to the anti-doping agency. the agency denied showing any bias toward china. the national rifle association is challenging california's 11% tax on firearm and ammunition sales. it is filing a lawsuit on behalf of two plaintiffs who claim the cost of their purchases increased as a result of the legislation. the nra cites repeated supreme court rulings supporting the position that constitutional rights cannot be taxed. it says the tax on the right to bear arms under the second amendment is unconstitutional. the tax became law on july 1st, and it's aimed

calabanga in san jose held a soft opening yesterday after electrical issues pushed back their original opening day. the water park opened just in time for the 4th of july holiday, and the heat wave that's hitting the bay area this week. calabanga replaces california rapid waters. the original park that had been opened for nearly four decades before closing last summer. >> it was actually a really sad and depressed, there's nothing else really to do during the summer. so yeah, this is a really fun place. i'm glad it's reopened now. >> the park offers season passes, daily admission and group admission, and they are open all week. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. looks like fun. well, next at 630, illegal fireworks are keeping firefighters busy this morning. concerned residents are weighing in about the neighborhood noise, and nasa is helping track active wildfires. the new tool being used right now out of mountain view. but

5th. >> yeah, let's get a check of that forecast. i know yesterday was warm and a lot of people were heading to the coast. is it going to be nice on the coast today? >> yeah, i think today is a similar story. it's going to be busy at our coastal cities because that's where the cooler air will linger inland. heat wave continues for another day. that's why we have the accuweather alert, a live look from sutro tower. just the thinnest layer of some fog out there. our marine layer is pretty organized along the coast, but that's about it. it can't get inland to cool us off quite yet. that will happen next week. temperatures. right now it is one of our cooler mornings actually, this week around the bay shoreline. 50s and low 60s out there right now. the wider picture shows you inland. we still have quite a bit of warmth. 60s and 70s from danville to brentwood. 71 right now in cloverdale. so we look inland once again. today it is excessively hot. our warnings are still in effect. we're back above 100 degrees once again. 105 106, in our hottest cities today, with full sunshine around the bay shoreline, a heat advisory continues. 80s and 90s for daytime highs, lots of sunshine here on your friday

afternoon along the coast though, right now we do have some thick fog that has developed, giving way to brighter skies this afternoon. so if you're thinking of going to the beach, the afternoon looks lovely. sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 60s for daytime highs. >> gloria drew, thank you so much. an elderly driver charged in a crash that killed a family of four at a bus stop is expected in court today. prosecutors say the 78 year old was speeding excessively and on the wrong side of the road when she slammed into the bus stop. it happened on west portal avenue in san francisco back in march. police say she was not intoxicated. investigators say they've also ruled out mechanical failure and a medical issue. >> the man accused of killing a woman at the powell street bart station in san francisco earlier this week, is expected to be in court today. district attorney brooke jenkins says murder charges are being brought against the 49 year old man, who was unhoused. jenkins says the man intentionally killed 74 year old corazon dandan by pushing her into the path of an oncoming

train monday night. khorasan dan, dan's family, tells us she was heading home from her night shift as a telephone operator at the marriott in union square. abc seven news reporter luz pena spoke with the family about the legacy she leaves behind. >> inside her home, corazon dan dan's family opened up about the woman who was loved by many. >> for sure, she is beautiful, sweet, kind, loving >> corazon was from the philippines, one of eight children. her name means heart in english, a heart that touched many. her older brother showed us photos of his little sister just two weeks before she was killed. >> this is that the last party we have surrounded by family was how corazon liked to live life. >> for years she had been saving for a lifelong dream that now she will never get to see, to build a house in the in the philippines. the night she was killed, corazon had just finished her 11 p.m. shift as a

telephone operator at the hilton's parc 55, in downtown san francisco. she was waiting for the same bart train she took home every night for over three decades. her nephew, alvin dandan, got the call from the hospital and was on chorus phone, calling me. >> so my heart dropped and i said, what's going on? and who are you? and where's my aunt? >> alvin was in shock. his first call was to his uncle in the bay area. >> he is a really great. and he told me go to die her in the train. >> bart police said they arrested a 49 year old homeless man eight minutes after the incident. >> that's really make any difference to us, won't bring her back. it's a mentally ill person. it wasn't racially motivated. >> i don't think alvin doesn't

want to remember his aunt, by the way, she died. but instead, by the way she lived. corazon never had children, so alvin and his cousin were like kids to her. >> she would go home and then, would borrow me and would go to the mall and stuff like that, and they would train me to my parents. >> corazon helped put alvin through medical school. he's now an intensive care doctor in saint louis. she raised me as his family remembers the joyful 74 year old energetic aunt and sister, an altar she built in her home to pray is what gives them peace. knowing she is with god now, she lives like a really a christian way of life. >> she put her faith like, be loving, caring and helping other people. >> luz pena, abc seven news developing news, fireworks and fires a busy 4th of july for bay

evacuate seniors in wheelchairs from an assisted living home right above the fire. we also saw fire burning in the same area where illegal fireworks were found near wild horse road. over in martinez, a grass fire burned three acres last night. it happened just off of michelle drive just before nine. contra costa fire believes this one was sparked by fireworks. thousands nearby watched the display. they continued to pop off above the crews as they fought the flames and san jose fire officials were so overwhelmed with a number of these calls last night. at one point, they called cal fire for help. live in san jose. lena howland abc seven news. >> thank you lena, and we want to give you an update on something happening right now. thousands of people in the city of gilroy waking up without power this morning. this is a live look at p-g-and-e's outage map. and as you can see, exactly where those outages are happening. two major power outages begin in just the last

hour. the outage that you see right here on your screen shows more than 2600 people without electricity. right now, the other shows roughly 3700 people who don't have power. so that's about 6300 people. customers. i should say, that are affected right now. there's no estimated time for when power will come back on, but we will keep you updated in case more people are impacted. if we get any information about the timeline for getting the power restored, and you may be hearing some legal fireworks going off for the next few days, it's been keeping fire crews very busy. >> we spoke with a san jose resident who is with the roosevelt park neighborhood association, and he says he's seen and heard the illegal fireworks and got these photos with his phone. >> it's been a problem for 20 plus years. in years past, it's been basically from after memorial day through july 4th for a good, solid month to five weeks. it's like living in a combat zone with all the aerial

of cameras. quite sunny in san rafael, san jose this morning. but santa cruz, we do have some foggy conditions right now. a temperature of 55 degrees. talking about our beach communities, the forecast calls for those clouds. this morning. we will get sunshine this afternoon. that marine layer does break down once again. temperatures mainly in the 60s for daytime highs in the ocean. water is currently sitting at a chilly 57 degrees. not only the heat we're tracking, but a red flag warning that continues as well for the higher risk of fire danger in the north bay, the east bay hills and in the santa cruz mountains. that humidity at times during the afternoon bone dry down to about 10. we'll keep you updated if anything changes underneath that red flag. warning here's future weather. hour by hour we are warming up pretty fast once again. 90 inland by lunchtime, 70s and 80s along the bay shoreline. and later on this afternoon, intense heat again inland. but the coast stays pretty cool. so highs today above 100 degrees inland once again with that excessive heat warning in effect 80s and 90s around the bay shoreline

burning just outside yosemite national park. in the last 30 minutes, cal fire put out an update. they say the fire is now 5% contained. they also revised the number of acres burned down slightly to 843 acres. this is near the town of mariposa, which is a popular area for people to stay when visiting yosemite. one man who's been living in that area for 50 years says he's helping firefighters can get these flames under control. >> would you live up here in the mountains? and when there's a fire, you just got to think in the back of your mind. hey, i got to be prepared. i got to have my stuff ready to go. i got to get packed up and get out because things change. so quickly, so fast. you don't kno. >> officials say hot temperatures and winds have been making it hard to fight the fire. 25 structures have been destroyed in the thompson fire, which is burning near lake oroville in butte county. some of the 28,000 evacuation orders

have been downgraded, which allowed people to come back to their homes. the flames are 29% contained. after raging through more than 3700 acres. >> ever since yesterday, i've been up over 24 hours all last night running around putting out hot spots. look how close we are to your home. >> i know ten feet from the porch, more than 12,000 buildings have been threatened by the flames. >> cal fire says the heat is making fighting this fire extremely challenging. >> stanford researchers are working on an experiment with wildfires. they're watching how fire behaves with different fire control techniques and also hope to learn the benefits on the drawbacks of these specific techniques. in this case, the researchers are looking at the effects of different intensities of fire on native and non-native plants. the team flagged off small areas into study zones, noting that plant varieties and soil types are different in the area, and one expert hopes the data will also add to his

research. he says there's a newly discovered side effect from recent wildfires. he's so intense it's making a naturally safe chemical toxic. >> the big one is for us is chromium. so chromium exists in the what's called the trivalent form. that's benign for humans, generally in soils and rocks. and when fire comes through, it catalyzes and changes it into hexavalent chromium. for anybody that remembers the erin brockovich movie, that's the chemical that got in the groundwater. >> his team wants to learn which soils are most vulnerable and at what temperatures. this could potentially keep firefighters and cleanup crews safer in dangerous conditions. nasa's ames research center in mountain view is helping wildland fire management agencies handle fires. experts are working on this tool to track active fire changes. the satellite images can show where a fire started, how hot it is and what it might be burning, as well as how close it is to communities. the data is shared in almost real time with emergency responders and
