hill and it zoomed up the hill in a matter of 5 to 7 minutes from serious injuries to grass fires. >> today we are following the damage from last night's 4th of july revelry. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm julian glover. >> the bay area's extreme fire danger was tested as illegal fireworks sparked several fires. >> of course, not helping the situation is our continued heat wave, which is stretching into the weekend. here's a live look out from the east bay hills. >> so for the very latest on the conditions out there, we start with abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya. >> yeah, julian and ama, we're into the triple digits once again for our hot spots. i do want to show you a live picture right now from our santa cruz camera. this is a good way to escape the heat. and that's exactly what people are doing. we take a look at the highs so far, and it's 103 in concord. so far, 106 degrees. in livermore. you'll notice low 90s from san jose to redwood city, 95 in santa rosa, 91 in napa. those temperatures at this hour still inland in the triple digits. you

do have much better conditions near the coast where the fog is sitting. excessive heat warnings and heat advisories are going until the middle of next week. 11 p.m. next wednesday, as the heat risk is still elevated. we also have a red flag warning for the hilltops until 9 p.m. tomorrow. combination of critically dry fuels, gusty winds and low humidity is the concern. you can see some of those humidity levels in our inland areas like brentwood, 12% 15% in livermore, 13% in fairfield. now you see why the fire danger is still remaining high. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast, which includes how hot it's going to get for your upcoming weekend in our inland areas and how long this heat wave will last. >> julian, we'll see you in just a moment. thank you so much, sandhya. of course, so many people have flocked to the coast in search of relief from this heat. this is a live picture from santa cruz. you can see the beach nearly full. there a similar situation in the north bay at stinson beach today, abc7 news reporter cornell bernard shows us the crowds there

getting away or change of scenery. >> sometimes it's what the doctor ordered. >> anser hassan, mcclatchy and powell packed up the kids and headed for the sand and sea breezes of stinson beach, leaving his very hot house behind in oakland. >> the house has been about 97, till about two in the morning. then it gets down to about 75. >> so beating the heat is this weekend's only mission, as the heat wave continues inland with triple digit temperatures. all of these people had the right idea because right now it's a balmy 72 degrees with just the right amount of fog. >> we just wanted to get away and get out of the city and, and try to beat the heat and come to some cool weather. >> here's what the beach looked like on july fourth. but getting here isn't so easy when everyone else has the same idea. by noontime, traffic into town was getting messy and may only get worse. >> it's going to be crowded, so if you don't leave early on saturday or sunday, there's a

very good chance you're going to stuck in traffic for like an hour. >> the parking lot for the beach filled up quickly, leaving many hunting for a space. >> it's really bad and i haven't been able to find parking the whole time. we've probably been driving around for like ten 15 minutes and just watch it like it's being at a concert. >> kind of like in your own town. larry rosenthal is a local, and he's learned to hunker down when temperatures rise and the masses arrive. you don't go over the hill, period at all. and if you do, it's you don't come back. >> 7,000 pounds of ice in three days. >> stinson beach market owner sergio vergara says inland heat waves are great for his business. he's stocking up on supplies. >> lots of ice, lots of beer, lots of wine, ice cream. >> got your sandwich. you know, your your chips for the beach and you drinks. yeah. >> in a town where the population is about 500 people, there will be lots of company until our heat wave is over. >> not too hot, not too cold. we

will be comfortable for a while in stinson beach, cornell. >> bernard abc seven news. >> in berkeley, a teenager was seriously injured by a firework that exploded in his hand. police say he was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. another teenager was treated on scene for minor injuries happened on fairview street near ellis, just before 10 p.m. their parents were notified as soon as the officers found the boys. >> the contra costa county fire protection district had a really busy 4th of july. they got about a thousand calls for service from the hours of 10 a.m. yesterday until 3 a.m. this morning. and as they tell abc seven news reporter anser hassan, they will be investigating some of those fires linked to those illegal fireworks. as possible. arson. >> me and my neighbors have no fear. >> as anthony hamilton tours the backyard that used to be blocked off by a fence, he knows he and his family are lucky to be alive. >> he says they only had minutes to evacuate as a wildfire raced up the hill. it likely was started by illegal fireworks being shot off in the shopping

plaza below. >> this is our house on the hillside. it's going up the hill. we're about to get burnt out. our home. me and my son. >> he's not coming home this weekend. concerned about the health impacts of the lingering smoke on his fiancee and young son. >> i could stay here, but he just. you just don't want to smell that all day for a toddler. and so it's really just kind of a lot of stress right now. a lot on your mind. >> the two acre fire that burned close to hamilton's house was the biggest, but it wasn't the only one. >> we saw that we had over 1100 calls that came in to dispatch captain victor daniel with the contra costa county fire protection district says they responded to 300 incidents in the 17 hours between 10 a.m. thursday to 3 a.m. friday. >> there were 16 vegetation fires, 90 exterior fires, and they're still trying to determine the number of structure fires, captain daniel says it's tough to crack down on all illegal fireworks, but unlike other fire departments, they have a full investigation unit. they not only investigate the origin of fires, they can also make arrests. >> and if there is a criminal penalties that are necessary, then they'll take the

appropriate actions to do that. and they work very well with all the law enforcement agencies within our county. >> and just don't forget that this is arson. and so this will be investigated as an arson. >> antioch mayor lamar hernandez thorpe walked through the burn site. he's calling for a full ban on fireworks throughout the state, saying it's best to leave the big shows to cities. he's adamant that this fire will be fully investigated. but he adds, residents need to do their part too. >> but everybody was watching. people have uh- video on their on their, on their doorbells. people have security cameras. please provide that to the to law enforcement so that we can hold those responsible accountable. >> the mayor says the penalty for arson includes a $10,000 fine and possible prison sentence in antioch, anser hassan abc seven news. >> in the south bay, firefighters are battling a fire outside the goodwill of silicon valley headquarters and donation center. take a look. sky seven was over that scene on north seventh street in san jose, a shortly after it started just before 2 p.m, officials say several trucks, boxes of books and wooden pallets burned as

crews tried to douse those flames. as you see there, fire appears to have spread to some grass nearby. no structures, though, are threatened. one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion, and oakland gas station manager is expressing anger and frustration today after dozens of people looted his business overnight. >> and he says he called police and they never showed up as he was looking for help. it happened at the 76 station on hegenberger road near interstate 880, just up the street from the airport. abc seven news anchor dion lem joining us now with this story. >> this is simply incredible, station manager sam martin says he has never seen anything like it. >> it all began at about 430 this morning when a crowd attending a nearby sideshow broke in and began ransacking and looting the place. martin believes some 80 to even 100 people took part. apparently unhappy that they weren't allowed inside the station, only offering window service normal for that time of night. >> shelves were ripped apart.

all the grocery items were torn or stepped on or vandalized. they broke the refrigerators. they dropped our atm, tore the atm apart, took everything in it. they tried to get the safe, but it was more secure than anything else so they could get through that. basically every single thing, even the tv marti estimates that the damage and theft totals more than $100,000. >> we reached out to oakland police for a comment about martin's claims about the response, but we have yet to hear back this of course, is just the latest in a series of issues on the hegenberger corridor. on wednesday, police turned out in force after reports of a shooting at chevro. sky seven spotted a car with its rear window blown out. and this is also the same area where an in-n-out burger closed in march due to ongoing crime, a first for that popular chain. back to you. >> all right dion, thank you so much. now to new developments in

a road rage shooting that turned the bay bridge into a parking lot during the monday morning commute. the victim was not struck by the bullet but suffered cuts from flying glass inside the vehicle. the chp says a suspect is in custody and a firearm has been recovered. newly installed high tech cameras helped to track down the suspect. it's the first time they've been used to make an arrest in the bay area. >> coming up, he calls them the best times of his life and says he received something even better than just the championship rings during his time with the warriors will have more on klay thompson's farewell message to all of us here in the bay area, and a programing note for tonight at 8:00. >> we'll have the highly anticipated interview with president biden as abc news anchor george stephanopoulos sits down with him for his first television interview since the debate. you can watch the 30 minute special at 8:00 tonight right here on abc

baby to the world and in some cases, the time off is unpaid. >> but now there is a growing movement to expand parental leave. >> i mean, it was uh. i had a long journey into motherhood. >> it was a long and challenging journey for anu sharma, welcoming her baby girl avni into the world. rounds of ivf, a two and a half day labor with an unplanned c-section and a rare condition. after giving birth. that's into rushing back to the hospital. >> fortunately, i was okay, you know, but my recovery on the postpartum side, you know, took several weeks during recovery and adjusting to life with a newborn. >> she spent hours on the phone with california's employment development department to correct a form so she could receive paid family leave. >> and i remember sitting on the front steps of my home crying just on the phone while, you know, just struggling with everything, navigating the patchwork of family leave is a

frustration faced by many new parents in the united states. >> families are kind of left on their own to try to figure out how to navigate this. you know, super critical, important, life altering juncture in their live. >> doctor maya rosen slater studies maternal leave as an associate professor of health policy at stanford university. her research has found only 60% of u.s. workers are eligible for the family medical leave act. that provides just 12 weeks of job protected, unpaid leave for new parents. even fewer new parents are eligible for paid leave. >> california was the first state in the nation to pass a paid family leave policy, but a dozen other states, including washington, d.c, have implemented their own paid family leave policies. most of these policies are somewhere between 6 and 16 weeks in duration, and that paid leave is significantly capped. >> for example, in california,

new mothers receive approximately 60% of their pay for up to eight weeks, forcing many parents back to the workforce too soon. >> mili clinic is redesigning maternity care from the ground up in response to the many challenges new mothers face, a new founded the mili clinic with her midwife turned business partner talia borgo. >> and there's a certain income level as well too, is where it actually doesn't even make sense to go back to work for some people, where it's like paying for child care is actually going to be more expensive than having my income again. >> navigating return to work and childcare are just two of the topics taken on in weekly postpartum groups organized by mili midwives. >> the answer ultimately has to be a policy shift. >> at the government level, the vast majority across all states, both democrats and republicans, are supportive of paid parental leave policies. and so i think the american public has kind of there. >> now it's up to lawmakers to finally take action. the abc

cool. >> tourists were eager to get on. it's not just about bringing tourists to the area. those involved with the wheel say they hope that residents rediscover all there is to love about fisherman's wharf and the city by the bay. >> come back and enjoy your wharf. >> local businesses are noticing the difference. >> it is booming right now. 60% are from, like hayward or fremont or somewhere else. >> memories of restaurants closing and cars being broken into are beginning to fade. ever since the news started coming out saying that all the break ins are happening, people started coming less and less and less. >> but now i think this is helping. the ferris wheel is helping, but we are coming back stronger than ever. >> i haven't seen broken glass in at least a week. >> a 360 degree view of what's possible for san francisco. >> it's very important that you also shift seats halfway through the wheel and the reason is it's almost like two entirely different rides. >> and a reminder when looking ahead and looking back to take it all in in san francisco.

melanie woodrow, abc seven news, sky looked beautiful there. >> looked nice. >> yeah. gorgeous view of the city, no doubt. we want to check back in now with abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel for a look at the forecast. sandy, we cannot wait to finally cool down. >> i know, and you know what? if you just had was to julian and ama, you will find that cooling effect and take a look at these live pictures. you will notice that from mount tam we have the fog just kind of shrouding the coast. nice breeze from our kgo roof camera and a lot of sun from santa cruz to walnut creek. so we are seeing our summer microclimates right now. it is 104 degrees in fairfield, but san francisco is sitting pretty at 66 degrees. quite the variety here. looking at a live view from our santa cruz camera, where people are just escaping the heat and enjoying the coast. here's a look at what you can expect in case you want to hit the beaches this weekend. uv index will be very high, so make sure you lather on the sunscreen. a mix of sun and fog

and a breezy afternoon tomorrow. stinson 70 degrees 69 at ocean beach, up to 83 degrees in santa cruz. here is what's going to continue the heat wave. high pressure still overhead. this is the fourth day of the heat wave for our inland areas, and that's going to continue into the weekend. so we look at live doppler seven here locally. we do have the fog right near the coastline. but in case you're not staying here and you want to get out of town, it's time for aloha travel forecast out of okay tomorrow. sunny skies in the afternoon, 81 degrees. it's going to be nice and sunny for most of the hawaiian islands. kona though 30% chance of scattered showers and 70 degrees from our kgo roof camera. you're certainly seeing the trees blowing around in the wind. so there is a sea breeze coming in. heat wave continues inland into next week. red flag warning through tomorrow night for our hilltops and it will remain mild along the coast with a mix of fog and sun this weekend in the afternoon hours. so we're going to go hour by hour this evening.

still triple digits at 620 away from the coastline. it is really going to be slow to cool off in our inland communities. at 915. it's still in the 80s and 90s, but near the beaches, nice and cool and foggy. and you will notice tomorrow morning, starting off with the fog around the coast and locally right near the bay shoreline, we go into the afternoon hours and it is just sunny inland and hot. you will notice in the afternoon in the triple digits once again. coast side. you'll remain in the 60s. let's take a look at your morning temperatures with that fog near the coast. 50s their 70s. well inland. clear skies for the inland communities day five of the heat wave inland. and here's a look at what you can expect tomorrow. san jose, 95 degrees 105, in morgan hill on the peninsula, 92, in redwood city, 67, in pacifica, downtown san francisco, 72 degrees. these temperatures still above average for this time of year 68 in daly city in the north bay, you will notice those temperatures in the triple digits from ukiah to lakeport, cloverdale, calistoga,

sonoma 95, san rafael 99. in santa rosa, heading into the east bay 81 in oakland. it will be a warm one. castro valley, 9190, in fremont and in our inland communities, 105 degrees in concord, 106 in livermore, 102 degrees in pleasanton. the accuweather seven day forecast definitely stay hydrated, find some shade. try to keep cool. if you have ac, that's great because this is dangerous heat inland once again tomorrow. but tomorrow is going to be the hottest day. the heat starts to ease on sunday. still some triple digits, but then next week we're going to bring you down into the 90s. inland 60s coast side. more in line with what you would expect in the summertime, although those temperatures are still going to remain well above average inland. >> and julian, bring us down, i know bring us down, way down. >> you're ready just temperature wise. that's right. there we go. >> not mood. thank you sandhya. >> all right. and here is your
