stop. plus, a church targeted by thieves not once, but twice. how they're focusing on forgiveness and still giving back. tonight on abc seven news. >> always live, abc seven news starts right now. >> dangerous. brutal and downright miserable. we're running out of adjectives to describe just how tough this heat wave is for the bay area. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm dion lim, looking live out across the bay area on day five of this heat wave. you can see there plenty of folks hitting the beach in santa cruz or heading up to tahoe for some cooler weather. we have current temperatures you'll see scrolling at the bottom of your screen and on the other side, you can scan the qr code for details on places to cool off and other resources to stay safe. today could turn out to be the hottest day of the entire heat wave, at least in some spots. the san francisco chronicle is reporting at least 28 people have gone to local

hospitals because of the temperatures, plus the threat of wildfire is still hanging over the bay area. through tonight. we have team coverage tracking the high heat and the wildfire risk. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian leads us off. spencer okay, dion. >> it's unofficial, but some locations in the bay area have been hotter today than at any other time during this heat wave. let's take a look at current temperature readings and some of these have dropped off a few degrees from just an hour ago, 113 at ukiah. right now. it was at 117 just an hour ago. it reached 110 at fairfield, which is down to 106 right now. it also reached 110 at livermore, which is down to 102 right now. but we still have dangerous heat in many of our inland areas, as you can see. so the excessive heat warning for the bay area remains in effect and will remain in effect until 11 p.m. next wednesday. once again, heat like this can increase the risk for heat related excuse me for heat related illnesses. and we still have our red flag warning for high fire danger. in effect for the hills and mountains of

the bay area that's set to expire at 9:00 this evening. so we'll wait and see if that gets extended. meanwhile, a little bit of a breeze at the coast right now, which is the only place to go right now to get a little bit of actual relief and cooling from this heat on. we go to the relative humidity, which away from the coastline is still dangerously low. thus the increased fire risk and as we look ahead to monday looking for some relief in the forecast, we'll see temperatures dropping just a few degrees in most locations by monday, except for the far north, cloverdale, clear lake and ukiah, which will still be in triple digits on monday. tuesday, a further drop off in temperatures in our inland areas and right around the bay shoreline. but on wednesday, look for the return of the heat. just the beginning of the return of the heat looks like some more hot days ahead. next week i'll have the accuweather seven day forecast in a few. just a few minutes, dionne. >> all right. sounds good spencer thank you. now to the north bay, where extreme heat is keeping fire danger high. many people are seeking shade and just trying to cope. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is

live for us once again at the marin county fair, where the heat is on cornell. hopefully you've gotten some relief to dion, but yeah, like you said, another day of extreme heat here in the bay area. >> folks here at the marin county fair not really letting it spoil the fun. they are staying hydrated, looking for shade, even lining up for some fresh lemonade behind me. meantime, firefighters across the region are on alert yet again for high fire danger. >> we're still all hands on deck. >> cal fire crews jumping on this wildfire saturday north of geyserville in sonoma county. the so-called pocket fire burned 12 acres before it was contained. red flag conditions in extreme heat are keeping firefighters busy across the north bay and the state. on tuesday, the toll fire in napa county was stopped at 40 acres after a quick attack from the air and on the ground. >> so we're being really aggressive to try to get on these new fires quickly, considering that we've had a lot of resources moving around to

some of the bigger fires across the state, a cool dip, the perfect antidote to our long heat wave. >> hamilton pool novato is a popular spot this weekend. if you need relief. and who doesn't? >> temperature is going to be like 90 degrees, so what better way to spend, you know, a sunny day than in the pool with toddlers? yeah. >> how's the water feel? >> it feels amazing. >> little jax excited for anything bigger than a bathtub. so he's learning to swim out here, and we're. you know, feeling like we're part of the community trying to beat the heat together. so it feels very summery. >> the marin county fair is a celebration of summer in the north bay, where 80 degrees is usually considered toasty. >> it's been really hot, for sure. >> fair ceo gabriella calicchio says the fair is pivoting to keep guests cool. there are six hydration stations where you can fill up for free. >> i think the hydration stations are great. i'm glad that they have them and that we can bring our bottles in to fill

tracking one new wildfire just starting up in the sierra foothills. take a look. it's burning on the eastern edge of placerville. this is south of highway 50. timelapse video shows a lot of smoke, but there are aircraft already making drops. first responders just ordered new evacuations. this was in the last 30 minutes or so. that fire has burned 20 acres so far. it's an unsanctioned summer tradition and today san francisco police are trying hard to stop it. officers brought out the barricades, trying to keep skaters from taking part in the dolores park hill bomb. abc seven news reporter ryan curry is live for us at dolores park. and ryan, did those skaters stay away? >> yeah. dion. good evening. i want to show you right behind me. these are the barricades that police have put up that are actually zip tied together. you can't move them. you can't even really get close to them. then over there, there's a cluster of san francisco police officers. we're right on the edge of dolores park. but this is being shut down all over dolores

street for several blocks. and you have these clusters of police on each of those corners. then right over here, you can take a look to see that even on the sidewalk, those barricades are zigzagging all the way down there, making it very clear they don't want anyone to be skateboarding down this hill. now, we have already heard from some skateboarders who are disappointed to not have the opportunity to go down. even some part of the hill. that's just not an option. all of these barricades and numerous police officers are in place to prevent it. yesterday, the police chief warned against people showing up, saying he was concerned about safety. we know last year 100 people were arrested for vandalism and throwing things at officers. the chief made it clear that he was not going to tolerate any more violence like that. the skaters told us there should be a way to work with the city. we even spoke with one of the people who've been working in advocacy with the city, saying he wants to find a solution where they can work together instead of using the resources to close off the street, they hope to use the resources to make for a safe passage for these skaters. now, we did also speak with some

residents who live in this area. they tell us they're actually thrilled to see this police presence. they were not happy to see what happened last year. they say it got out of hand at times, and so the residents who live in this area, they're welcoming this police presence and they're deterring any sort of idea about skateboarding down this hill. we're going to have more from them. and the skateboarding community who are here later on tonight at 11. but for now, reporting live in dolores park. i'm ryan curry for abc seven news. >> dion ryan watching the situation closely. all right. thank you leo. police say an incident that started as an attempted traffic stop ended with a deadly crash overnight. officers tried to pull over a car at about 1 a.m. near sonoma boulevard. and lemon street. but they say the driver sped away, leading to a brief chase. that pursuit ended when the car collided with another vehicle just a few blocks away. one person in the suspect vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. the others in the car were all taken to a nearby hospital in the east bay. police are searching for the person

responsible for a homicide in richmond. they say a woman was found stabbed to death inside her apartment on el portal drive near san pablo dam road on the 4th of july. relatives tell abc seven news they became concerned when the woman stopped responding to her daughter's calls, and texts. >> she texted my aunt, say, hey, my mom is not answer me for two days. so that's the way we find out to come up here in the apartment, see? she's okay. >> police have not identified a suspect in the case. members of an oakland church are showing a commitment to service. just days after being burglarized. twice in 48 hours, volunteers showed up for a grocery giveaway at the east bay church of religious science last saturday and sunday. thieves broke into that church. they damaged doors and a security gate and then took off with the church offerings, audio and video equipment, and several computers. church members say they are going to rebuild, you know, from the beginning our

restaurants are opening this summer at the waterfront shopping center, ameche's east coast pizzeria opened a new restaurant just a few days ago, and two other businesses are also scheduled to open within the next two months. officials say pier 39 occupancy rate is almost at 90, and its sales volume is at 95% of pre-pandemic levels. more than 11 million customers visited pier 39 last year. that is 3 million fewer people than in 2019. i was actually passing through the other day, and it was really nice to see how bustling it was. >> i like pier 39, a lot. i know many people consider it kind of touristy and all that. yeah, well, it does attract tourists because it's an attractive plac. >> yes, and i love the sea lions and just some of the food you can get there. those mini donuts are so good. it's a great places to eat over there, even on a hot day like this. >> let's take a look at what's happening with our weather. and here's a satellite image showing satellite and radar showing that the marine layer has been trying

to form, but it keeps getting burned away. but at least there is some minor cooling occurring at the coast, and there's a little breeze accompanying it as well. we have 24 mile per hour surface wind speeds here in san francisco, but most locations inland are sweltering right now in fact, it has been hot of late, as you know, but today is even hotter at this hour, at least by several degrees in most inland locations that at this time yesterday. so let's take a closer look. here's the view from mount tam looking down onto the bay 68 degrees here in san francisco right now. oakland 73. so those are comfortable readings 81. hayward 90 at san jose, 85 at redwood city. and 63 at half moon bay. at the golden gate, there was a little hint of a weak thin marine layer earlier, but it's gone right now. it may return tonight though. 88 degrees right now up north at santa rosa, petaluma, 7785 at napa. and check out the triple digits 106 at fairfield, 102 apiece at concord and livermore. livermore, by the wa, was up to 110 degrees a little bit earlier this afternoon. these are our forecast headlines. the heat wave obviously continues, and it's

likely to continue into at least the middle of next week in our inland areas. red flag warning for high fire danger remains in effect until later tonight. that could possibly be extended, but right now it's scheduled to expire at 9:00 tonight, and you can find cooler conditions at the coast right now, mainly because of a mix of thin fog and sunshine. this weekend. so the coast has certainly been a popular destination. but right now we're looking at the excessive heat warning once again for the bay area. that's in effect until 11 p.m. on wednesday of next week. and as we look ahead to next wednesday, we see the likelihood of this heat holding on even longer. but in any event, the oppressive heat we're experiencing experiencing right now can increase the risk of heat related illnesses. red flag warning for high fire danger. once again, for our hills and mountains around the bay area. in effect until 9:00 this evening, winds will be generally about 5 to 15mph, with gusts occasionally up to and even above 20mph. relative humidity is dangerously low below 10% at

times over much of the bay area. tonight we'll see the marine layer beginning to reform. it'll be thin, it'll be shallow, but it will push onshore and locally inland. 9:00 tomorrow morning there will still be some some remnants of it, but it will burn away quickly, giving way to sunny skies again tomorrow. overnight, low temperatures will be generally in the low to mid 60s from the peninsula to the south bay over into the inland east bay from the coast to the north bay. lows will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s, so a little cooler near the coast and up north and a little warmer in other locations. highs tomorrow 65, half moon bay 72. here in san francisco, mid to upper 80s around the bay shoreline and yes, there will be some more triple digit readings in the inland east bay tomorrow and in the far north, but coming far a little bit farther south down at santa rosa, a high tomorrow of 98 that's still pretty warm, and napa a high of 91. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. now monday, a little bit of a gradual cooling trend begins. when i say cooling, it's going to be less hot with inland highs in the upper 90s mid 90s inland
